“Consult not your fears, but your hopes and dreams.
Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential.
Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in,
but with what it is still possible for you to do.”
Pope John XXIII, Opening Address to the Bishops of the 2nd Vatican Council
Thirtieth Sunday In Ordinary Time October 29, 2017
BALANCE Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cher-ishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t al-ways easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are op-pressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week we have in All Souls’ Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday’s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The “Day of the Dead” is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life’s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
INCLUSIVE LOVE Love of our neighbor is included in the love of God. —St. Thomas Aquinas

SOUP, STEW & CHILI SCHEDULE
Communion of Saints Devotion
The month of November has traditionally been a time when the Church celebrated the Communion of Saints, prays for those who have died, and prepares to welcome the one St. Francis called “Sister Death”. In keeping with this tradition, we will once again be creating Communion of Saints devotional areas, on which we will honor, not only some recognized saints of the Church but our own loved ones who have gone before us. We are inviting families to share with us a photograph (in a frame if possible) of loved ones who have died. We will display these in our devotional area along with the relics of saints. In order to design the devotional space, we ask that all photographs be turned into the Parish Office or brought to the sacristy in the church or Chapel by October 29th.
Achievements of Special Note Evidence of a Caring Community of Faith Congratulations to Abby Herl, one of our school’s graduates, who is a Junior at Incarnate Word. Abby received the VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD for District 3 from the Missouri Health Association! The award was announced during the Missouri Health Care Convention which was held in Branson at the end of August. Abby has volunteered over 200 hours at Delmar Gardens North during the last five summers! Cathy Bono, Director of Delmar Gardens, said, “Abby is a sweetheart of a teenager and continues to share her gifts and talents while serving the elderly. It is a joy and blessing to have her.” Abby began volunteering while a student at Christ Light of the Nations School as a service project for Confirmation. She truly is living what the children of our school hear every day:
Following Jesus and being His hands and heart to everyone we meet!
We are so proud of Abby! She’s the daughter of Al & Regan Herl of our parish and is a great example of what one young person can do to help others!
Even though the weather has been unseason-ably warm and maybe not ideal for soup, you came through with an extremely large amount of filled containers for Our Lady of Perpetual Help's food pantry. Thank you all for your generosity.
Thank You
