We Are Called To Live Our Faith … Beyond Sunday

Advent - Having Faith in the Future Last week’s readings suggested that farmers make the best disciples for several reasons. First, they know when and where and how to plant seeds. Planting is an intentional activity. Second, if they didn’t believe in the possibility of a harvest, they’d never bother to plant anything. Farmers have faith in the future. Finally, if you recall, farmer are patient. Patience is characteristic of farmers and must be of anyone taking up the mission of Christ.

I BELIEVE THE BEYOND SUNDAY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN now underway in our parish is evidence of our parish’s faith in the future. Please take some time in the coming weeks to view the display about the Campaign in our parish church and in the vestibule of the chapel.

This Campaign intends to Benefit Our Parish by FUNDING new roofs for our parish church and rectory and CONSERVING our parish savings for the future by setting up a restricted capital improvements fund.

It also intends to Benefit All Parishes by SUPPORTING families choosing Catholic education and by IMPROVING school organization and programs.

You will note at each display - as in the logo above - that 40% of all Campaign pledges and gifts remain in our parish as an investment in the future. At each display there’s more Campaign information for you to take home and read and talk about with your family and friends. Our general parish campaign begins this coming January.

THIS CAMPAIGN CALLS US TO BE GOOD STEWARDS of the resources that parishes and the Archdiocese are investing in the schools of our Deanery. The Church of St. Louis cannot set about raising $100 million without at the same time seriously considering how we will use these moneys in the best possible ways to support Catholic education and our schools.

Last spring the 10 Pastors of our Northeast Deanery requested the help of the Archdiocese to develop a set of recommendations for the 8 schools of the Federation of Catholic Schools in our Deanery. The Pastors are seeking more long-term solutions that would address the challenges and the opportunities we’ve been facing for the past 10-12 years.

Very soon all school parents as well as parish and school leaders will be informed about the challenges our schools are facing and be invited to comment and share their insights on a first draft set of recommendations for the future. By mail, email, and through our parish bulletin we will keep everyone informed. Your being informed and your participation will insure that these recommendations will be reasonable and responsible. I believe that the future of Catholic education and Catholic schools in our Deanery is very promising. In the coming weeks your intentional involvement will be a sign of your faith in the future, a real evidence of Advent’s hopefulness!

Annual Men’s Club Communion Mass and Breakfast, Sunday January 8th. The Breakfast is for all men of Holy name of Jesus Parish. Following the 8 a.m. Mass we will gather in the Community Center for breakfast and fellowship. This will be a great opportunity to meet new members of our parish and to re-new some old friendships. This breakfast is a main fund raiser for the Men’s Club so please consider joining us for an enjoyable morning.

Pro-Life Articles, an organization, whose objective is to help stop legal abortions, emails Pro-Life infor-mation to twelve thousand catholic churches each month, at no cost to the churches. Some of these email messages are returned to us, because the church has changed their email address and forgot to no-tify us of such change. When this happens, we must either telephone the church office to obtain the cor-rect email address or look it up on the church’s website using the internet. This requires the use Excel on a computer.

We need volunteers to assist in this effort. It takes about two hours per month for each volunteer. This can be done from your home.

NEWS FROM CHAPEL OF OUR LADY

We are still looking for volunteers to assist with cleaning duties. It takes approximately 2 ½ hours twice a month and consists of vacuuming, dusting, spot scrubbing, bathrooms and tiled floors in the vestibule. If interested please call Sandy in the parish office.

DECORATING SCHEDULE Friday, December 16th Items will be hauled from the rectory garage and the parish center. The heavy lifting will be done by some students from Trinity High School. Several men from the parish would be helpful. This consists of setting up indoor and outdoor Nativity sets and the large pre-lit trees in the Sanctuary. Sunday, December 18th following 10:30 Mass Regular Christmas decorating in the Chapel. Any additional help would be appreciated.

We will be decorating for Christmas at Holy Name of Jesus on Sunday, December 18th, after 8am Mass. There will be many different tasks, so you may choose your favorite. All volunteers are welcome and we greatly appreciate any time you can share. Looking forward to seeing you….PS Don’t worry, we’ll supply breakfast!

COOKBOOKS ARE HERE! We will begin selling the new parish cookbook this weekend after all Masses. We will continue to sell them after all Masses through December 18th. ♫ NORTHEAST DEANERY CHILDREN’S CHOIR ♫

The Northeast Deanery Children’s Choir will be singing in a Christmas Concert at the Old St. Fer-dinand Shrine on Sunday, December 11. The con-cert begins at 3:00 pm. On Tuesday, December 20, they will perform at the Missouri Veteran’s Home. At 4:00 pm on Christmas Eve the Choir will sing their Concert of Carols at Holy Name of Jesus Church, and then lead the singing for the Christmas Vigil Mass at 4:30 pm. The Choir is composed of children from Holy Name of Jesus (Christ, Light of the Nations School), Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sacred Heart and St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem.
