Rotary members are enthusiastic, fun-loving and active volunteers, who give their time and talents to serve communities, both at home and overseas. We are dedicated people, men and women from all walks of life, who share a common interest in helping others.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) has over 55,000 members in 1,840 clubs. It is an integral part of Rotary International, the world’s first service organisation, which today has over 1.2 million members worldwide.

Each member enjoys business as well as social networking opportunities, whilst giving something back to those less fortunate, learning new skills and having a huge amount of fun!

Rotary runs countless humanitarian projects both locally, nationally and internationally, and

also partners with many charities worldwide. Rotary members organise community projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, such as violence, drug abuse, health, hunger, the environment, and illiteracy.

Rotary clubs determine service projects based on local needs. They

work for and with young people to address challenges facing the youth of today.

Worldwide, Rotarians are enthusiastically committed to the drive to wipe out polio. Since Rotary became involved in polio eradication in 1985, the number of reported polio cases has fallen from 350,000 a year to less than a 1,000; 125 endemic countries have been reduced to just 4 - Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan; and two billion children have been protected from the disease.

Hitchin W

ine & Food Festival

Welcome to the 5th year of the Hitchin Wine & Food Festival. This annual event goes from strength to strength and this year we have more exhibitors than ever. As well as all the food exhibitors, restaurants and cookery demonstrations, we have no less than nine independent wine merchants, some of whom will be holding master classes throughout the day.

Many of the food and wine exhibitors are highly praised for their produce, giving a mix of great flavours and tastes. Choose from a variety of great wines that you would not normally find on the shelf at your local supermarket which you can taste before you buy.

See the chefs from the local top restaurants in action. Get an insight into their skills and passion for great cooking with locally sourced produce and treat yourself to a great meal out,

where you can experience their enthusiasm for food flavour and presentation.

Tantalise your taste buds with the wide variety of delicious food and help support the independent traders.

Funds raised from this event and guide will go to many needy causes. These could be local, national or international. Have a great day, we look forward to seeing you.

Support group’s fear

after funding is cut

A charity that offers help and advice

to parents of children who have

behavioural conditions has lost its

funding from Herts County Council.

Angels Support Group, which

supports parents and carers of chil-

dren with attention deficit hyperac-

tivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autis-

tic spectrum disorders (ASD), has

had £40,000 in funding removed by

the county council.

Leise Cooper, 43, was one of the

first members to help set up the

charity, which is based at The

Letchworth Centre for Healthy

Living, after her two children were

diagnosed with the conditions 10

years ago.

The mother-of-two from Hitchin,

who is now the charity’s parent

support manager, said: “We work

really hard to support families from

all over North Hertfordshire and

Stevenage. It has been a real shock

that this lump of money has been

taken away from us.

“We have enough funds to tide us

over until Easter next year, but after

that, if we don’t get anymore fund-

ing, we will have to start to cut back

on the services we do offer and we

really don’t want to have to do that.”

Currently the charity has 700

members.

Support groups run weekly in

Hitchin, Stevenage and Letchworth

GC and fortnightly in Royston. The

charity also runs various activities

during holiday times for children

and families.

Marolyn Brown, 39, from Hitchin,

uses the group for support with her

eight-year-old son Zak, who has ASD.

She said: “They are a lifeline to

parents and they have helped me and

my son to a great degree. They are

always at the end of the phone when

you need them. If the service was

cut, I don’t know where we would go.

“They have helped me with under-

standing the condition; they’ve come

with me to meet my son’s teachers to

explain to them what he has. The

new members may not get to benefit

from all the support I have had.”

Another parent, Maddie Samson,

whose son Lucas, 10, has been diag-

nosed with severe autism and ADHD,

said: “Our life would be horrendous

without their support. My son and I

would not be where we are today

without them. They helped me get

him out of mainstream school and

into a special school which caters for

his needs.”

A Herts County Council spokes-

man said: “The council awarded

fixed-term grant funding to a variety

of groups for a two-year period from

2011, of which Angels Support was

one of 10 local organisations that

was successful.

“The funding was provided for

local voluntary sector organisa-

tions, to contribute to the work those

organisations do in delivering

targeted services that prevent the

support needs of children and their

families from escalating.

“It was made clear from the onset

that this was not intended as perma-

nent funding.”

Residents left in limbo over road

surfacing work which should have

started in September have been told

it will now not be done until March

next year – because of weather

conditions.

Residents living in Old Charlton

Road and Wratten Road East,

Hitchin, were informed via a notice

put up by Herts Highways, that work

was going to start on September 27

and would last one day, but a month

on nothing has been done.

Residents were told in order for

work to be carried out on worn-out

road surfaces, vehicles would need to

be moved to clear the area.

One resident of Old Charlton

Road, who wished to remain anony-

mous, said: “We are fed up and frus-

trated by this. Every night we move

our cars and in the morning find

that another sign has been put up to

say that the work has been post-

poned or the date has changed.

“I am lucky because I have a drive

and can park my car there, but for

most people they have to park far

away from their house.

“People that work nearby at LV=

Liverpool Victoria on Tilehouse

Street are also being affected by this.

It is totally ridiculous. We need the

work to be done because there are

potholes everywhere.”

Another resident, Phillip Jones,

said: “Our biggest inconvenience is

that my disabled mother has carers

come to see her four times a day and

they have nowhere to park.

“We also have an elderly person’s

minibus that comes to take her to a day

centre, and we have to rearrange that

each time they put up a sign to say they

will be doing the work, because they

wouldn’t be able to get into the road.”

A sign from the district council

says that parking restrictions will

also be enforced from Monday, with

road markings to deter people from

parking on the road, but this has been

delayed because the resurfacing work

has not been carried out.

Mr Jones, who has lived in Old

Charlton Road for the past five years,

said he paid £80 for three parking

permits because North Herts

District Council (NHDC) was enforc-

ing the restriction.

“I can’t understand the total

miscommunication between the two

authorities, and I will be asking for a

credit for the time we have not used

the parking permits.”

Herts County Council (HCC) said

the delay was due to a mechanical

failure of some of the equipment

needed to carry out the work. Once

this issue was resolved, the scheme

was scheduled to begin on October 18.

However, poor weather conditions

meant this was not possible.

A spokesman for HCC said: “We

are using a micro asphalt treatment

which is not possible to lay in wet

conditions or in lower temperatures.

Now that these weather conditions

are becoming more prevalent, we

have reluctantly had to postpone the

treatment until March 2014.”

Cllr Tom Brindley, NHDC’s portfo-

lio holder for planning, transport

and enterprise, said: “We had been

waiting for resurfacing work to be

completed by Herts County Council

before refreshing some resident

parking lines in Wratten Road East,

and adding new bays in Old Charlton

Road, as well as limited waiting

areas to free up space for visitors

and people using local businesses.

“We now understand that this

work has been postponed until next

March, so we will schedule in the

work to lay down the new lines by

the end of this month.”

Every exhibitor is passionate about what they do whether it is preserving rare breeds, encouraging us to be adventurous with our taste buds or showing us that we don’t have to compromise on quality for the sake of convenience. Our exhibitors bring with them quality, freshness, uniqueness and variety that you won’t find in supermarkets.

There are meats from rare breeds of pigs and native breeds of beef and lamb that have all grazed freely on the hillsides of the eastern edge of the Chilterns. Many producers will happily invite you to their farms and smallholdings but why not visit them on the Market Place? What is meat without vegetables? Find an array of fresh, seasonal produce that comes straight from the producers and is with you on the same day. And what better way to finish a meal than with one of the 40 local cheeses on display that are sustainable, traceable and organic.

The Rotary Wine and Food Festival is one way of supporting our local businesses, it is one way we can bring our communities together and it is one way we really find out what delicious, fresh tastes are right there on our doorstep.

R E S T A U R A N T

Since opening in February 1999, Just 32 has gained an excellent reputation for a wide variety of reasons; the excellent freshly cooked food, the friendly staff, the ambience and above all a feeling you are eating somewhere very special.

We offer a full à la carte menu, including vegetarian dishes, a separate lunch menu and also a mid-week specials menu where you can enjoy either a 2 or 3 course meal (lunch and dinner) from only £15.95.

Our à la carte menu changes every month and our lunch menu more frequently.

Take a look at the Just 32 Restaurant reviews on TripAdvisor and then give us a call to experience the difference.

Our wine exhibitors may come from Hitchin, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Yorkshire and Essex but many have travelled around the World to bring character, quality, beautiful and rare wines back with them. Discover new and exciting flavours and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised as there is something to suit everyone’s pockets and taste buds.

Many of our wine exhibitors support artisan produce and small vineyards in countries across Europe like Israel, Hungary and Switzerland and as far afield as South Africa, South America and New Zealand. Taste the quality of wines that are made by small producers who passionately care about what they are making.

We could not forget that this festival is a marriage of wine and food, so our wine exhibitors have many ideas of how to blend the two together. Whether you would like to drink and eat or put the drink in what you eat, they will be happy to make a recommendation!

If you prefer beer, then visit the Rotary Beer Stand in the Market Place where you can try and purchase a selection of real ales from Tring Brewery. Experience the richness of ales prepared by the traditional method, using malted barley, hops, water and yeast. The finest ingredients, most of which are home grown.

Redcoats Farmhouse hotel and restaurant is a magnificent building, parts of which date back to 1480, with delightful gardens set in rolling Hertfordshire countryside just 5 minutes from Hitchin town centre.

We pride ourselves on serving seasonal food using the very best ingredients available. Fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown on site in our kitchen garden, with partridges and pheasant all reared within a one-mile radius.

Dining at Redcoats is, perhaps, a little different from other restaurants. In addition to our three dining rooms we have a bar, two sitting rooms and a large garden. Both of our sitting rooms have open fires in the colder months and make for a pleasant cosy place to relax.

Our restaurant is a warm and relaxed environment with friendly service. Our main dining room is the conservatory, with unspoilt views over our beautiful gardens. Our smaller dining rooms are ideal for private dinner parties.
