A celebration of artistic expression and local winemaking describes the 31st annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival to be held September 14th and 15th in beautiful Capitola Village By-the-Sea. The quaintness of the Village and the sound of the surf is the backdrop for this won-derful celebration. The Festival was created in 1982 by the late Carrie Jacobson May, Barbara Reding and Eric Johnson to
showcase local artistic talent. Fifty artists participated on the Espla-nade that first year in the “Capitola Village Art Festival”. The Capitola Chamber of Commerce became in-volved the following year in 1983. The late Jay Collins created the first poster, wine tasting was added and the name was changed to the “Capi-tola Art & Wine Festival.” Artistic talent ranges from exquisite jewelry to metal sculpture for the home, intricate blown glass, hand-crafted leather goods and wood-work, water color and oil paintings, photography, and everything in-be-tween; even a local face-painter for the children (or the child within). And for the budding young artists, there is a children’s art area with ongoing projects to entertain the younger set. Today the Festival is hosted by the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of
Commerce and includes over 160 local and nationally acclaimed fine artists, wine tasting from 22 Santa Cruz Mountains wineries, local gourmet restaurants & caterers and fabulous entertainment all weekend including the samba-reggae-funk-surf-and-skate, capoeira-kicking, scene-busting phenomenon known as SambaDá, and red hot rockin’ soul from The Fundamentals, plus local dance and performing arts groups, and street performers.Local artist Kim Hogan created the beautiful artwork for the 2013 Fes-tival Poster. The Capitola Art & Wine Festival is the biggest fundraising event of the year, not only for the Capitola-So-quel Chamber of Commerce (a non-profit organization), but also for the many local school groups and non-profit community groups that assist with the Festival. The Festival has

Kim Hogan has lived in Capitola for nearly 10 years. She has two grown children,
Amanda and Hunter, and shares her life with her best friend and partner, Michael Termini. They enjoy cooking, politics, neighbors, a wealth of friends, and cross country motorcycle rides every summer; Kim rides her own Harley. Kim says, “Riding cross country has taken on a completely new meaning since I began painting. I will often focus on a scene during the ride and,
while enjoying the beauty and majesty of scenes like the Grand Canyon, Lake Louise in Canada, the battlefields of Gettysburg, or just a tree, I’ll deconstruct the scene in my mind so I can paint it. Could a person be more blessed?
My love of painting began five years ago when I enrolled in a night class through Capitola adult education. I had no idea how it would change my life. Blessed with an amazing teacher, I began painting in water color, moving onto oil the following year. I have been experimenting with subjects since the beginning and haven’t settled in my sweet spot yet. I love painting portraits, children especially, however intricate flowers and large landscapes are also a joy. I went through a period of painting scenes from photos of Capitola in the 1920’s. Currently I am experimenting with nature – clouds, water, and Rocky Mountains in particular. It doesn’t matter what I paint, I simply love the pure joy and peace of it. To this
day, I stand back gazing at something I have painted, filled with emotion that I created it. I have developed a completely new appreciation of art in general and my perspective of people and nature has taken on a whole new meaning since I began painting. I will be forever grateful for the nudge in life that led me to take a night class.”

SambaDá – Samba-Reggae-Funk
While Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring their profound knowledge and respect for the roots of afro-brazilian song and dance, the entire band has developed a type of samba-reggae-funk with a universal appeal. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America. For over ten years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of Brazilian culture. The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. What unites this band from such diverse backgrounds is a magic that can be felt by both the band and the audience. SambaDá brings joy to each performance, and keeps their fans asking for more!

Tucked between the Santa Cruz Harbor and the San Lorenzo River is Seabright. At the east end of Seabright Beach the lighthouse guards the Harbor Entrance and at the west end is the cliff overlooking the mouth of the San Lorenzo River and the Beach Boardwalk.
The broad beach at Seabright beckons to sunbathers and beach volleyball players alike.
Just across East Cliff Drive from the beach is the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History with its huge gray concrete whale just begging to children to be ridden on the high seas.
Along the west side of the Harbor is Aldo’s Harbor Restaurant while on the east side is Johnny’s Harborside. On Seabright Avenue itself is the Engfer Pizza Works and the Seabright Brewery

Eternal Springtime was to become Thom’s final painting as it was found resting on his well-worn easel. No doubt, he would be pleased in knowing that this piece might inspire you to carve out a few moments in your busy day to indulge in his vision of peaceful-ness, beauty, and serenity.
