STUDENT ATTENDANCE IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS POLICY

What are the responsibilities of Parents?

Parents must ensure: 1.1 Their children of compulsory school age are enrolled in a government or registered non-government school or, they are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) for Home Schooling. 1.2 Their children who are enrolled at school attend every day the school is open for their instruction. They provide an explanation for absences by means such as a telephone call, written note, text message or email to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. (Please note. At HPS if an explanation has not been received on the day of return to school, reminder letters will be sent home) 1.4 They work in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to support regular attendance at school, including communicating with the school if they are aware of issues impacting on their child’s attendance or engagement with school. Reasons for absence

Legal reasons for absence include sick (includes medical and dental appointments) or justified leave. Justified leave is granted if a student has to attend a funeral or a religious celebration. Principals can decline to accept an explanation for absence and record the absence as ‘unjustified’. Unjustified absences include: shopping, sleeping in, working around the house, child minding, birthdays, haircuts, weather, car problems, other family member being sick, going to the airport to meet relatives/visitors.

Applications for Extended Leave (travel or holiday)

From the beginning of 2015, Family holidays and travel are no longer considered under the Exemption from School - Procedures . Travel outside of vacation period is now counted as an absence for statistical purposes. Principals can issue a Certificate of Extended Leave after a parent or caregiver completes an application for Extended Leave form.

A principal will not accept a reason for travel during school term if it is not in the best interests of the student. Educational, social and participation reasons, which should be specified on the Application.

Travel is considered to be domestic or international travel for the purpose of a family holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons, which should be specified on the Application.

Parents are encouraged to take holidays with their child during school vacation periods.

Principals may request travel documentation, such as travel itinerary or e- ticket, and ensure this is attached to the Application. Unsatisfactory attendance A child is considered to have an unsatisfactory school attendance when they have: regular absences without explanation (despite follow-up from the school), regular absences and explanations provided by parents are not accepted by the principal, or extended periods of absence without an explanation or the explanation is not accepted by the principal. An extended period of absence may be consecutive or irregular patterns of non-attendance.

Reminder

A reminder for Term 3, the earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.35am. Any earlier than this

means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students

until 8.35am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.35am.

Students MUST NOT arrive at school before 8:35 am and must leave promptly at 2:55 pm

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING PBL

Our school has undertaken a major project over the last

couple of years to become a Positive Behaviour for

Learning (PBL) school. PBL emphasises the importance

of teaching expectations to students just as we would for

English or Mathematics. As a staff we have reviewed our

school rules and come up with a clear set of positively

stated expectations for each of the areas within our school.

Our rules at Holsworthy Public School are Be Safe, Be

Respectful, Be a Learner.

New signs have been put up around the school that

feature our mascot, which was designed by a student

as part of a competition, and clearly state the

expectations for all children.

LIBRARY NEWS We are celebrating Book Week

this year in a variety of ways as we

anticipate the announcement of

the Children's Book Council of

Australia's 2018 Book of the Year

Award winners.

Book Week Performance: Treasure Hunt The writer of this show has chosen three of the Short-listed Books, and woven a story touching on sustainability in our natural environment and inclusivity and equality in our communities. The talented actors will inspire the students through comedy, dance, music and drama in this highly interactive show. There will be separate shows for the primary and infants students. The performance will be on 24 August, with the payment of $7 due on Wednesday 22 August. A note will be sent home this week.

Book Character Parade The annual Book Character Parade will be held after recess on Thursday 23 August. Parents, grandparents and carers are invited to attend and all the students are invited to dress as a favourite story character. The students really enjoy using their imagination to create fun costumes for favourite characters. They are not expected to purchase expensive costumes. There will be more information in the next newsletter.

Book Fair Our Book Fair will open after the parade on Thursday 24 August. There will be a wide variety of fiction and information books for the children on display and available for purchase. We will also have a selection of books chosen by members of staff. We hope families might purchase from this collection to donate directly to the library. In addition we will also gain a commission to further add to the school resources available for your students. An EFTPOS machine will be available.

Book Club The brochures for Book Club Issue 5 have been sent home this week. The amazing variety of items from which you can select cover all age groups from 3 year olds to teenagers. Many of the items have great discounts. You can choose to pay online and get a receipt number, or send payment to school in an envelope with your child's name and class on it. In either case please enclose the completed form in the envelope and deposit it in the special box in the school foyer. The final date for accepting orders is Friday 10 August. From our commission, the school chooses books for the library and classrooms. We look forward to your support for these events which are designed to encourage reading and a love of literacy in your students.

Premiers Reading Challenge The new student site for the PRC is now available. Students in year 3 to 6 can access this through their portals and enter their own books for the challenge. We now have more than 60 students in year 3 to 6 who have completed the PRC. The challenge closes on the 31 August so there is still time for others to join them. If you have any questions please see me in the library on a Monday, Tuesday or Friday. P Tipping Teacher Librarian

SCHOOL SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY PROGRAM

The School Swimming and Water Safety Program begins Monday 6 August (week 3) and runs until

Friday 17 August (week 4). This year, 3B, 3/4C, 4P and Year 2 students will be attending from 9:15-

10:00am.The remaining classes from years 3 to 6 will be attending from 10-10:45am. Students who

are involved will need to ensure they bring the following items to school: dry underwear in a plastic

bag, towel, swimming cap and a jumper or jacket to wear to and from the pool. All belongings should

be labelled with your child’s name. Students must wear their swimmers under their school uniform

each day of the program. We look forward to a successful two weeks of the School Swimming and

Water Safety Program.

SPORT NEWS

School Sport and Rec Sport For Term 3 we have a new round of recreational sports on offer. This term there is tennis and acrobatics recreational sport. Expression of interest notes went home last week as there are only 70 places in the tennis program and 50 places in the acrobatics program, students need to return their expression of interest forms to the office to receive a permission note with final payment details to secure a place. The rec sport program will begin this Friday.

Students not participating in rec sport can choose to do orienteering, cycling or school sport for their Friday sport program. These groups will be finalised later this week.
