PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE OPEN DAY 2018
What a truly wonderful day it was on Wednesday. The sense of community was amazing. I genuinely believe we are “Creating the Future” and promote a real “Love of Learning”. Thank you to the many parents, grandparents and community members who shared the children’s special day. We really value your support and partnership in your child’s learning. The pride on the faces of children was evident in every room, in every performance and in fact, everywhere we went. I would like to thank Ms Beresforde and Mrs Georgi for their excellent organisation of our morning tea and all teachers for their outstanding teaching and learning programs that were obvious in all classrooms. To our performers on the day, what can I say, except exceptional. Thanks to all students for your well-rehearsed performances! I was so proud of our school.
BOOK WEEK Just a reminder that we will be celebrating Book Week Thursday 23 August. This year we will be starting with
a grandparents morning tea in our newly opened quiet area –‘Nature’s Nook’, followed by classroom visits
where students can read or be read to by grandparents. At 11.30am there will be a character parade. There
is also a “Book Fair” in our library. We hope that many family members and friends will be able to join us on
the day.
SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL We would like to congratulate our students and teachers from Year 6. Holsworthy Public School was successful in gaining 39 positions in Selective High Schools across Sydney, with 5 more students on the wait list. This is an outstanding result and we know these students will bring great skills and knowledge to their new schools.
TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY-YEAR 4, 5 AND 6 STUDENTS I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form is being sent home with students today. If you do not want your child or children to participate please return the form by Friday 24 August 2018. There will also be a parent survey conducted later in the term. Information will be in the next newsletter.
ATTENDANCE The Education Act (1990) requires parents to ensure that children between the ages of 6 and 15 attend school on each day that the school is open for instruction.
All class rolls are checked by the Department of Education and are considered legal documents.
Every child should arrive at school by 8.55am and leave at 2.55pm unless there is a justified reason.
Reasons such as “traffic”, “slept in” or “running late” are not justified and are recorded as an unjustified absence.
If children are absent from school, parents are required to provide the school with an acceptable explanation on the day the student returns to school from their absence. A reminder that parents are encouraged to take holidays with their child during school vacation periods. Applications for extended leave (travel or holiday) will only be approved by the principal if it is in the best interests of the student. Your help with this important aspect of your child’s schooling is appreciated.

Stage 3 Education Week Designs
As part of this year’s theme for Education Week, Stage 3 have been researching, designing and
constructing learning spaces to create their ideal learning space. The students thrived in this
challenge, demonstrating creativity, problem solving and ingenuity and were very proud to show off
their designs to their parents and other students in our school.
Quiet Area now open and named ‘Nature’s Nook’
Last term our new landscaped garden area was completed as part of a funding grant. Our
Environmental Rangers worked to plant out the new garden area with a variety of scented plants,
natives and herbs. Last week our School Parliament introduced a Bill to name the garden area. After
much debate the name 'Nature's Nook' was voted on by an overwhelming majority and so this is
now the official name of our new garden area. Students have recently been able to enjoy the space
during lunch time as a nice quiet garden area away from handball games, basketball competitions
and the busy nature of our main playgrounds.
Mind Marathon
On the Wednesday 1 August, 5/6M attended the annual
Mind Marathon Competition held at East Hills Boys High
School. Students competed in teams of six against other
students across Sydney in a range of categories including
English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography,
General Knowledge and Engineering. All teams were
successful in their efforts, working together and completing
all the challenges given to them.
Congratulations to the following students whose team placed 3rd overall; Teresa Yang, Angelina
Tomy, Chloe Tan, Claire Zhang, Elly Liang, Katrina Ling.
