MESSAGE FROM MRS. WHITTEN

We have such amazing kids at Heron! The STEAM Fair was a huge success, and I was so excited to hear students share their projects. We had a lot of diverse interests represented, and the kids were so excited to share what they had learned. Congratulations to all the students who entered projects, thank you to the parents who joined us, and thank you to Jasmine Reese, Karen McDaniels, and Melinda Lai for bringing this experience to our school community!

Our Heron teachers and staff are an incredible group of people, and I am grateful everyday to work with them professionally and know them personally. I am also grateful to have such a caring school community for my own children! This week is our opportunity to show our teachers how much we appreciate them! The theme of this year’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is “Together We Color The World.”

Our amazing PTSA has gotten all sorts of goodies donated for our teachers to enjoy this week, and we are inviting our students and families to by bringing your teacher a little something special each day this week, inspired by the color of the day! Be creative and have fun! You can also show appreciation by wearing the color of the day!

Monday: RED- maybe it’s flowers, a red fruit, or a book… let your ideas flow! Your teacher or staff member will surely grow!

Tuesday: ORANGE or YELLOW- a thoughtful card, a snack, pencils, or glue…. Our choices are unlimited, it’s completely up to you!

Wednesday: GREEN- a lovely drawing, a plant, or some tea…. Show your teacher how they make Heron the best place to be!

Thursday: BLUE- a simple supply of tissue, a gift card, a favorite drink or treat… whatever you choose will make their day complete!

Friday: VIOLET- a special surprise wrapped with a violet bow, today’s the day for your appreciation to show!

DID YOU KNOW?

➔ Middle School Parent Meeting May 1 5:30, MPR: We are proud to offer an exciting middle school program at Heron that supports students social emotional needs through our Responsive Classroom framework, and also challenges students academically with rigorous and engaging courses. If you have a 6th grader or 7th grader, you are invited to attend our Middle School Parent Meeting on May 1st and learn more about our middle school program and the elective options available to your child. 6th graders will also be attending a middle school orientation led by our Leadership students on Friday, May 3rd.

➔ Middle School End-Of-Year Trip Behavior Requirements: On May 17th, all 7th and 8th graders will attend our annual end-of-year trip to Six Flags Marine World! This is always a fun celebration for our middle school students, and all students who meet behavior requirements will be invited to attend. Students with excessive (5 or more) office referrals or 3 or more days of school suspension will not be allowed to attend the end-of-year trip. Permission Slips are due May 13th.

➔ Registration for Production Club Summer Session Now Open! Mr. King does an amazing job teaching our Tech class in the middle school, providing our students with a wonderful opportunity to learn about many aspects of film production and produce The Heron Show each week. We are proud to offer a FREE summer session for our elementary students going into 4th, 5th, or 6th grade to start learning some of these skills. The Production Club will be offered June 6-12, and there are two sessions: one from 8:00-12:00 and one from 1:00-5:00. Applications will be accepted starting on Monday on a first-come, first-serve basis. We have space for 50 students, and then a waitlist will be started. If you would like your child to have this opportunity, fill out the application attached to the newsletter or pick one up in the office today!

➔ May is Bike Month is Here!  Families - fill out the Bike Month pledge form that was sent home this week, and return it to school by THIS Monday, April 29 to get a t-shirt.   This year, to participate in Bike Month, students set a trip goal and pledge to ride. Families complete the pledge form sent home this week with a Bike

Month newsletter. Students that turn in their pledge form by the Monday, April 29 deadline will receive a Bike Month t-shirt to wear proudly throughout the month. (Sorry, no late forms will be accepted.) Students can turn in their pledge forms to their teachers or to the office. T-shirts will be delivered to classrooms by the end of the first week in May.  Students can show off their pledge! A big pledge banner is displayed at school. Every student who turned in a pledge will also receive sticker with their trip pledge that will be added to the display.  Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation!

➔ Inderkum High School Counselors Visited 8th graders on Friday! Last Friday, our 8th graders were visited by counselors from Inderkum High School to understand their course options for 9th grade and have some of their questions answered about high school. Information was sent home with them, so be sure to ask your child to see the information that was handed out! Mark your calendars for Link Crew Orientation on August 5th, 2019 from 3:00-9:00. 9th graders will be “linked up” with an upperclassman to learn about the Tiger Way, campus expectations, how to start high school on the right foot, and get connected to campus. 9th graders will meet with their Link Leader through the entire year.

➔ New feature on Heron’s webpage! You can now report your child’s absence through our school webpage! Reporting your child’s absence is very important, as it allows us to mark the absence as “Excused” or “Unexcused,” which could help prevent your child from becoming truant if the absences are excused. 3 or more “Unverified” absences will automatically result in a truancy letter.

➔ CAASPP testing is here! Please review our CAASPP Testing Schedule carefully and make every effort to ensure that your child is at school on testing days, well rested and ready to do their best. As our students have been working throughout the year to meet grade level standards, we also want to make sure students are confident with the format of the assessment and the types of questions they will be asked in order to demonstrate their learning. To support students with this, I’d like to share a variety of CAASPP resources available to parents and students at home. There is a quick video tutorial available to show parents how to help students access CAASPP Practice Tests at home, as well as links to “Quick Guides” on how to access the Practice Tests and Training Tests. These are very helpful resources that teachers will be reviewing with students, and I encourage students to practice them at home to help build their confidence and comfort level with this assessment. Our students have been working so hard in their classrooms, and we want to see our Flyers SOAR on their end-of-year assessment! Our students made tremendous growth last year- let’s keep it going!
