Dear residents and families, May is National Older Americans Month, and this year the theme is Engage at Every Age. According to the Administration on Aging, the theme emphasizes the importance of taking part in activities that can enrich your physical mental and emotional well-being. It’s also a reminder that older adults can truly make a difference throughout our community! This month – and every other month – we hope you take advantage of all the engaging activities Heritage has to offer, from the exercise programs that promote physical wellness and the outings that encourage social connectedness to the intergenerational activities that allow you to share your wisdom with the next generation. You’re never too old (or too young) to get involved, get active and get engaged! Check the May calendar for opportunities! Take a Stand Against Arthritis

May is National Arthritis Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to take a look at this painful condition, which affects 1 in every 5 adults. Arthritis isn’t a single disease, but actually includes over 100 types of joint conditions. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and involves a loss of cartilage, meaning bone rubs against bone, causing pain and stiffness. In addition to medications from your doctor, there are a variety of ways to manage your

condition on your own. Stay active. Although it may be painful, moderate activity is important for strengthening the muscles that support your joints and helping maintain range of motion. Walking and yoga are two good options because they’re low-impact. (Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise regime.) Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Not getting enough rest can worsen pain and fatigue.

Use hot or cold therapy to control pain. Cold reduces swelling and numbs nerves, while heat relaxes muscles and increases circulation.

Inflammation is a primary component of many diseases – from arthritis and cancer to heart disease and depression. Reducing inflammation can dramatically improve quality of life – and may be as simple as a change in diet. Avoid foods that contain refined carbohydrates (like white bread and pastries), as well as fried foods, red meat and soda. These foods can make inflammation worse.

Reduce Inflammation through a Healthy Diet

Eat plenty of fruits. Berries are a great option for reducing inflammation, as are oranges and cherries. Grab some leafy greens. Add some spinach, kale or collard greens to your diet to help protect the body from inflammatory proteins. Spice things up with garlic, turmeric and rosemary. These seasonings have strong anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to boosting flavor.

Opt for low-sugar yogurt. Yogurt promotes good gut bacteria, which, in turn, helps decrease inflammation.
