Give your Brain a Workout this New Year

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to become more active, which is a great goal! But this year, why not also resolve to keep your brain more active, as well? Keep learning. Challenging your brain with mental exercises helps stimulate brain cells, thereby keeping your memory sharp. Read a new book, join a different club, take an online class or even just challenge yourself to a new crossword or jigsaw puzzle. Use all your senses. The more

sense you involve, the more your brain will be involved in a particular process or activity. Try joining a baking club or working with ceramics, noting the feel and scent of the materials as go. Tidy up your life. Reduce clutter around your home and take advantage of calendars, planners, maps and lists to keep track of everyday information. Spending less mental energy on remembering birthdays or appointments frees your mind up to better learn new things.

Take up journaling or write your life story. Writing can improve both your memory and your ability to communicate.

Winter is a great time to grab some greens, since these leafy veggies are currently in season. Stocking up on them is also a great way to help you stick to your New Year’s resolution of living a healthier lifestyle! Kale and spinach are probably the most common of the leafy greens, but there are plenty more options to choose from. Why not add

Winter Greens for a Healthier You

a little protein to your diet with a serving of collard greens? Or supercharge your body with a dose of vitamins A, C and K from Swiss chard. If you’re thinking of cooking with any of these greens, don’t be intimidated; all you really need is a little bit of oil, garlic and some sea salt to cut the bitterness. I recommend flash sautéing them in the oil and garlic, then sprinkling your desired

amount of sea salt on top. It’s a great side dish or a healthy and filling snack between meals.

Betty McWilliams

Betty McWilliams

Betty has been married to her husband, Duane, for 62 years. Together they have five children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Betty grew up in the Stevens Point area with her brother and three sisters. Betty met her future mother-in-law while working at Cutler -Hammer. When Duane came home on leave from the Marine Corp., his mother introduced them and, as they say, the rest is history.

Betty and Duane love to travel and have gone to such places as Hawaii, Jamaica, Aruba, Mexico, the Cayman Islands and most of the Southwest United States. Betty still loves listening to music, especially country. Singers such as Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and the Mandrell Sisters are just a few of her favorites. In addition to country music, Betty and Duane still enjoy a good polka or two.

Santa and his elf took time out of their busy schedule to come visit our staff, families and residents in December. What a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit!

Christmas Events

Christmas certainly is magical and brings out the kid inside all of us. That’s why we made it a point to fit in as many holiday activities as possible throughout the season! We enjoyed a trip to see some Christmas lights, dressed up in our holiday best and enjoyed some festive holiday stockings!

Clockwise from top left: Pat, Louie and Frank enjoy a ride to see the lights at Ingleside Hotel. Thelma loves the goodies inside her stocking. Jackie and Linda were Santa’s helpers and posed with Ginny. Louie certainly loves her candy cane! It only took David a few seconds to open the popcorn from his stocking.
