Headlines of Hope February 2018

A letter from our CEO Ashley ReidThe New Year is now well and truly underway and we’ve hit the ground running to ensure we continue to embrace every day as an opportunity to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer on our West Australian community.

2018 marks a significant year for all of us here at Cancer Council WA as we celebrate an important milestone - our 60th anniversary.

We’ve come a long way since our humble beginnings in 1958 and we owe that to the generosity and unwavering support of people like you.

60 years ago, the chances of surviving a cancer diagnosis was around 30 to 40 percent. Today, survival rates for the most common cancers are more than 90 percent, and the overall five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with cancer is around 60 percent.

Although we’re making great advancements, there’s still much to be done in the areas of cancer prevention and research and in providing support to the thousands of West Australians affected by cancer each year.

As a non-government organisation, we’re reliant on community donations in order to continue this life-saving work.

We hope you’ll continue to support us for our next 60 years as we continue to make a massive difference in the lives of all West Australians.

Every day we’re getting closer to a time when cancer is no longer something to fear, and that’s something to be incredibly proud of – thank you!

Every minute, every hour, every day since 1958Since 1958, we’ve been uniting the community to prevent cancer, support patients, and save lives. Here’s just a snapshot of what we’ve achieved in that time.

The Cancer Council of Western Australia Act was introduced to Parliament and marked our establishment.

1958

Our Cancer Council 13 11 20 service was launched, thanks to a $100,000 grant from the AH Crawford Cancer Treatment Society. This service provides confidential cancer-related information and support and currently answers more than 8,500 calls a year from people needing information or assistance.

1994

We established our Life Now program based on research that demonstrated exercise is a powerful medicine for managing cancer. The program continues today, with 1,345 people registered to participate in 98 Life Now programs across the state in the 2016-2017 financial year.

We awarded our first Early Career Investigator grants to support WA cancer researchers to grow their careers in the field. One of our first recipients was Dr Daniel Galvao who was researching the role of resistance and aerobic exercise in reducing treatment side effects in men receiving ADT for prostate cancer. This research has translated into very real outcomes for people diagnosed with cancer and was instrumental in the development of our Life Now program.

2007

1963We contributed £3,500 to the Scientific and Advisory Committee for small research projects and the first vacation scholarships for tertiary students. Our research grant program continues today and we are now one of the largest funders of independent cancer research in WA.

1987Our Cottage Hospice in Shenton Park was opened – the first purpose-built, free standing hospice in the country. This was converted into our Milroy Lodge for country cancer patients in 1999. To date, our Crawford and Milroy Lodges have accommodated 35,000 country cancer patients while they undergo treatment in Perth.

1993We held our first nation-wide Daffodil Day fundraiser. The Jarvis family of Donnybrook donated 300,000 daffodils for sale.

2000We established Make Smoking History, a state-wide tobacco control campaign, with support from the Department of Health and Healthway.

2018Together, we celebrate our 60th anniversary.

We launched our first national ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ SunSmart campaign to change the way Australians think about sun protection.

1980

2005We established our Regional Support Network to assist people who are affected by cancer in regional areas. Our Cancer Support Coordinators are now located in Albany, Midland, Mandurah, Toodyay, Geraldton, Bunbury and Busselton and provide over 10,000 occasions of support each year.

3 tips to detox your life this New YearThe New Year is a great time to think about changes we can make, but rather than opting for crazy diets, try to introduce simple changes that will help you to lead a healthy lifestyle. To help you get started, we’ve put together our top three tips for ‘detoxing’ your life!

1. Clean out your pantryA clean, organised pantry helps you instantly see what you have and makes meal planning and shopping much easier.Take everything off the shelves and count how many tins oftomatoes or jars of olives you have ‘just in case’ and decide ifyou’ll actually use them. If not, consider donating any extras to a food aid organisation, like Foodbank, so they can be put to good use. This is also the perfect time to check use-by dates and any open packets for weevils or pantry moths. Give everything a wipe down and a re-shuffle.

Since 1958, we’ve been uniting the community to prevent cancer, support patients, and save lives. Here’s just a snapshot of what we’ve achieved in that time.

2. Clean your mind by movingMoving more is great for your mental health, particularly if ‘me’ time is in short supply. Consider setting up a weekly walking date with a friend, joining a social sporting club or trying out local yoga or pilates classes. Exercise is one of the first things we drop when life gets busy. But if you find an enjoyable way to move your body, it becomes easier to squeeze it in.

3. Re-focus on your foodWhen you focus on just the eating, you enjoy and appreciate your food and are less likely to ignore your body’s signs of fullness. Instead of changing WHAT you eat, try changing HOW you eat. Mindfulness is a hot topic right now and it’s easy to make it part of how you eat. Turn eating a meal into an event instead of something you fit in between tasks. Switch the TV off or move from your desk. Put your phone away or eat with a friend.

The start of a new year doesn’t have to be about guilt and bestintentions. Try making just one of these changes and give yourself the best possible start to 2018!

Lunch club a celebration of Life NowOnce a month, nine very different West Australians gather for a catch up over lunch in Balcatta. While the common factor that connects them looms large, it’s a subject rarely spoken about amongst the laughter and good humoured conversation.

According to group member Steve, they look like just a normal bunch of people, except that they all have something in common that other people can’t see - a cancer experience.

“We don’t need to talk about cancer to understand there’s a strong connection and sense of support between us and that’s really thanks to Cancer Council WA which offered the Life Now exercise class where we met,” said Steve.

The group met after enrolling in and completing our 12 week Life Now exercise program in Balga. Steve said the connections he made through our Life Now classes were a bonus, making him aware he wasn’t going through a cancer experience alone.

“My feeling is this group provides an ‘uncomplicated connection’ to others who’ve been through a similar experience,” he said.

“Family and friends can be a great support but I think you cannot underestimate the impact and benefit of others from outside of your circle.”
