Happy Winter! Dear InterMountain Career & Technical Educators, Here is hoping that January finds you rested, warm and ready to finish out your semester with energy and zest! Fall was dominated by deadlines, but Winter is the season where we have time to take stock of our progress on 2017-18 planned accomplishments, focus on collaborating to develop and support new programs & teachers and begin planning for next year. Highlights from this Fall o We had a great turnout of administrators, counselors and CTE teachers for our first Fall CTE Workshop on October 6th. In the morning ODE led us through a dry run of the planning process that districts should be using for their Measure 98 High School Success planning, and in the afternoon CTE teachers met in their Pathway groups. Thanks to those of you who attended and brought teams from your schools. o Partnered with Go STEM! to host fun Next Generation Science Standards Hands-On Workshop in September. o Congratulations to the Athena-Weston School District for their successful CTE Revitalization grant, which will focus on expanding and renovating their Agriculture and Manufacturing CTE facilities. La Grande, Morrow County & Pendleton started the year in their new Revitalization grant-funded spaces successfully completed & equipped. Yay! o Double kudos to the Agriculture Department at BMCC. First, this Fall they moved into their beautiful new FARM (Facility for Agricultural Resource Management) building and in December Animal Science Instructor Nick Nelson was elected as President of the National Association of Agriculture Educators—the first Oregonian and post-secondary instructor to serve in the role. o All Secondary Career Pathway grants have been approved in what turned out to be a very short turnaround time, but a long wait. Start spending. o All Pathway groups have met at least once and some twice, including a visit from Arts, Information & Communications Specialist Denise Brock, hosted by Hermiston High School, to meet our Visual & Media Arts instructors. o CTE is growing in our region! Health Sciences and Computer Sciences are both gaining traction. ODE has provided us with a little bit of extra capacity to focus on building approved programs of study in the Health Sciences with the consultation of our regional expert/retired principal Jocelyn Jones. BMCC’s fledgling Computer Science Advisory Committee is going strong and IMESD continues to explore how we can support our developing programs of study, maintain the successful STEP program that IT has developed and add capacity in regional high schools to offer students additional opportunities to explore this growing field. o Many thanks to our ODE colleagues who have come to visit us for various events this Fall, including new Director Laura Foley, Donna Brant, Tom Thompson, Art Witkowski, Denise Brock and Reynold Gardner. Happy Winter! Dear InterMountain Career & Technical Educators,

Here is hoping that January finds you rested, warm and ready to finish out your semester with energy and zest! Fall was dominated by deadlines, but Winter is the season where we have time to take stock of our progress on 2017-18 planned accomplishments, focus on collaborating to develop and support new programs & teachers and begin planning for next year.

Highlights from this Fall o We had a great turnout of administrators, counselors and CTE teachers for our first Fall CTE Workshop on

October 6th. In the morning ODE led us through a dry run of the planning process that districts should be using for their Measure 98 High School Success planning, and in the afternoon CTE teachers met in their Pathway groups. Thanks to those of you who attended and brought teams from your schools.

o Partnered with Go STEM! to host fun Next Generation Science Standards Hands-On Workshop in September. o Congratulations to the Athena-Weston School District for their successful CTE Revitalization grant, which will

focus on expanding and renovating their Agriculture and Manufacturing CTE facilities. La Grande, Morrow County & Pendleton started the year in their new Revitalization grant-funded spaces successfully completed & equipped. Yay! o Double kudos to the Agriculture Department at BMCC. First, this Fall they moved into their beautiful new FARM (Facility for Agricultural Resource Management) building and in December Animal Science Instructor Nick Nelson was elected as President

of the National Association of Agriculture Educators—the first Oregonian and post-secondary instructor to serve in the role. o All Secondary Career Pathway grants have been approved in what turned out to be a very short turnaround time, but a long wait. Start spending. o All Pathway groups have met at least once and some twice, including a visit from Arts, Information & Communications

Specialist Denise Brock, hosted by Hermiston High School, to meet our Visual & Media Arts instructors. o CTE is growing in our region! Health Sciences and Computer Sciences are both gaining

traction.

Upcoming Professional Development o Salem CTE & Industry Summit (January 31-Feb 2)—Talk to your CTE Director if you are interested in attending.

Registration closes on January 18th. o Early Career Agriculture Teachers Conference (February 2 & 3) in Corvallis for 1-5th year teachers. o Turf Management Training (February 13, 1-3 p.m. @ IMESD, Pendleton) taught by OSU Professor/Turf Specialist

Alex Kowalewski. Consortium will cover half-day substitutes for interested CTE teachers. o Pathway Groups:

o Agriculture Pathway Group-January 12 all day in La Grande (contact Mike Sanders) o Business Pathway Group-January 18 @ 2:30 via Zoom (contact Teresa Veach) o Industry & Engineering Pathway Group-January 26 in Heppner from 1 – 6 p.m. (contact Dave Fowler) o Hospitality & Tourism and Arts, Info & Communications—TBD. Looking Forward If you have program completers who won’t be back in your class Semester 2, please remember to give them the technical skills assessment in January. If you need help with that, contact Jennifer.

February is National CTE Month. Go to acteonline.org for resources to help you share your stories with the stakeholders in your schools and communities.

“Tis the season to set goals and priorities. As a regional consortium, we start our Perkins planning for next year. At the same time, your districts have likely already begun their Measure 98 High School Success planning process and many of you are implementing your Secondary Career Pathways funds and activities. With some strategic planning and good communication, these three funding sources, and others you may have, can be leveraged to achieve significant investments in your programs. Use the next month to think about short and long-term priorities for continuous program improvement. Jot down ideas, discuss with your pathway groups and communicate with your CTE Director and administrators to prepare for the next opportunity for investing in your program.

New teachers and new programs and renewals: Jennifer will be focusing on licensure, program development and starting program renewal applications for the Industry & Engineering programs of study.

Flying the Coop We wish our long-time CTE Program Assistant Kathryn Hoolehan the very, very best as she and her

husband embark on a new adventure working for the Silvies Valley Ranch in southeastern Oregon. During her tenure here at the ESD, Kathy cheerfully took on additional duties every time someone retired in order to help CTE in the region continue to grow in quality and quantity. She will be sorely missed by all as she transitions into her new ranch life.

But, we are also pleased to welcome Jen Thul who will bring new energies and ideas into supporting your work. An Athena native, Jen brings a keen understanding of small schools and eastern Oregon as well as experience in hospitality, auto parts and special education. I look forward to you all getting to know her and all the Jen jokes that are sure to transpire…just as long as you don’t call her the young Jen and me the old Jen.

For a look back at the first part of the year, keep scrolling. Thanks for all of the great work you do every single day to help students explore their future paths through Career & Technical Education.

Wishing you all the best for a 2018 full of personal and professional growth.

Jennifer Pambrun
