Newsletter 15 August 2018 Term 3 Week 4 Volume 12

From the Desk of the Principal Education Week Thank you to the many community members who supported our school during Education Week. It was wonderful for the students and staff to see so much support at the Richmond Marketplace performances and during our Open Day celebrations. Congratulations to our students who performed so brilliantly during our dance, choir and band performances, and to all of the students and staff for showcasing our learning through our STEAM activities.

Fiver for a Farmer We are all very proud of our Student Representative Council members for their decision to support farming communities affected by drought. Equally, we must all feel very proud to be part of a community that has rallied together to support this initiative, raising over $1100 and importantly increasing awareness of the impact this drought is having upon so many people. For those of us who have family directly affected by this drought, whether as farmers or members of a farming communities, it is of great comfort to know that such strong support exists.

Bushfire Evacuation Drill Congratulations to the students and staff for another well conducted bushfire evacuation drill. Students remained calm and followed staff instructions appropriately. The drill was led by Mrs Harrington and Mrs Thomas and focused on a scenario

involving a fire in Bowen Mountain and the Grose Valley. In this scenario buses and whole-school evacuation off-site was not an option, resulting in a lockdown inside the school hall. Coordinating staff ensured the school had the following provisions in place: current student and staff attendance rolls, parent contact details, emergency service contact details, first aid kits, EpiPens and defibrillator, mobile phones, access to bottled water and utility keys to access gas, electricity and water.

School Facebook Our use and experience of Facebook as a school communication platform has been a resounding success and I would like to thank our community for ensuring that it has always remained a positive and informative space. For some schools, the use of a social media platform, like Facebook, can present challenges in ensuring appropriate protocols are maintained and that student and staff privacy and safety is not compromised. To help achieve this outcome, I ask that our Facebook page remain a one-way information channel. While we strongly encourage you to continue to like and share our posts, please refrain from using our Facebook page to ask questions of staff about school matters. Please contact the office should you have an enquiry about an upcoming school event. Thank you for your cooperation.

School Car Parks Please ensure that when entering or exiting the school grounds that you and your children remain on the pedestrian paths and do not use the vehicular access points. It would be disappointing to have to spend precious school funds on the construction of a pedestrian fence to prevent this continuing.

In English we are focusing on reading for meaning so we can use reading to learn new and interesting topics. We are learning about the author’s purpose so we can distinguish between facts and opinions in a variety of texts.

In Mathematics we have discovered the patterns that link decimals, fractions and percentages as they are smaller than 1 and greater than 0.

5/6W have decided to beautify the garden outside our room. We have chosen to create a Japanese style garden as an extension of learning about Japanese culture with Sensei Lewis. We have been researching the elements of Japanese gardens and the types of plants used. Thank you for the donation of a Japanese maple tree. We are now sourcing some donations of one or two larger feature rocks and two azalea plants.

5/6W enjoyed our STEAM challenge—”Catch it if you can!” The learning intention was to develop our team work skills of compromise, perseverance and communication, by sharing ideas and listening to others, to efficiently and creatively complete a task. Each team worked together to use the equipment and make a launcher to move ping pong balls and a catcher to catch them. They were given two minutes to test the effectiveness of their designs. Each group also assessed their creativity and teamwork. All important skills for students to learn.

What We’re Learning

5/6W are great chicken farmers and have found these fun facts: Scientific name: Gallus gallus domesticus There are over 500 breeds worldwide

SCHOOL BANKING Yvette Haxby has been our banking volunteer since the beginning of 2017, enabling us to continue offering this to our students. She has been doing a wonderful job! Unfortunately for us, Yvette is unable to continue volunteering in this role.

If you have 30 mins to an hour free on a Wednesday or Thursday and would like to volunteer please contact the office. The Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program.

If we are unable to find a volunteer for school banking, we may not be able to offer this to our students in the future.

KINDERGATEN 2019 If you, or someone you know, has not yet completed an Expression of Interest for enrolment in Kindergarten next year, please do so as quickly as possible. This will help as we begin our class planning process. It will also ensure you/they do not miss out when we send out Parent Information Evening, Orientation and Transition information shortly. ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL If your child is absent from school, you need to send a note to school explaining the absence. It needs to include your child's name and roll class, the number of days away and the reason for the absence. If the absence is more than 3 school days, you need to call the school to inform the teacher, and provide a note (as above) when your child returns to school. Include any additional information the school may need to know, eg cannot play sport. As part of the implementation of the National Standards, holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods will now be included as absences. If your child will be absent for more than 5 school days, please obtain a application for extended leave from the office prior to the absence. ANAPHYLAXIS As there are a number of children in our school with major allergies to nuts it would be appreciated if lunches and snacks could not include any products containing nuts.
