Gym Show 2012: 14th and 15th March 2012

The Gym Show is always one of the highlights of the school calendar and this year was no exception.

Taking place in a difficult week for the school due to the announcement of the sad news of Mr Cook’s death after a long struggle against Motor Neurone Disease, the Gym Show focused on the London 2012 Olympics and proved to be a great tonic for the school. A collection was held in memory of Mr Cook which raised £216.00 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association As usual, it was a performance full of energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment with exceptional

tumbling, vaulting, trampolining and dance. Congratulations to all pupils who were involved, ranging from our youngest pupils participating for the first time to two Year 13 students, Charlotte Hannah and Georgia Morris, who have appeared in every single Gym Show for the last seven years and who were appearing for the last time.

An appreciative audience of parents, families and friends wildly cheered their approval for the outstanding routines and displays of agility and suppleness. It proved to be great fun and

entertainment and an emotional farewell for Georgia and Charlotte.

The pupils showed their gratitude to the teachers at the end of the show, showering them

with gifts and appreciation for all their hard work and commitment over many weeks of

preparation and rehearsal. Thank you to all staff involved without whom, the Gym Show

would not have been possible: technicians, back stage crew, front of house and the PE

department especially Mrs Lewis for leading

and co-ordinating the whole show.

Science Week 12th - 16th March 2012

Glenthorne’s budding Scientists got involved in Science Week in March. There were a range of activities that proved to be a magnet for young Einsteins and Darwins of the future:- On Monday, Year 7s pitted their wits against their Science teachers in “Are you smarter than your Science Teacher?” Collecting special hidden cards around the school.

On Tuesday, there was a “Hair Raising Treat”, not for the easily shocked!

On Wednesday, “the Science department makes a mess” was a strong attraction for all those who enjoyed making a

mess.

The finale on Thursday was ‘Body Parts’, certainly not for the squeamish. Overall, it proved to be great fun and very

popular among pupils.

Y10, Y11 & 6th Form Speed Pathways Exhibition

On Friday 9th March, KS4 MAG&T pupils interviewed MAG&T KS5 pupils about the options they have taken so far with regards to academic studies and the pathways they intend to take in the future. Pupils rotated around many groups in order to gain a broad understanding from many different 6th Formers of the choices they have made to date. It was a very productive session and it was really interesting to talk to 6th formers about their own options and how this links to their future pathways. It was good to know that everyone is going through or has been through the same 6th form stages as yourself. We learnt more about how options can open different pathways for our futures and have a better insight into 6th form lessons. We hope this session remains as part of MAG&T as it was really useful. World Book Day: 1st March 2012 Over 200 pupils and many staff dressed up really some fantastic costumes: Tweedledee, Tweedledum, the Cat in the Hat, Agnes Brown, Skullduggery, the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas to name but a few. Every student who came to school in costume received an invitation to a pizza party. There were eight runners up who will all received book tokens and the overall winner was Daigan Reid (9N) who came dressed as Willie Wonker from Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and won a Kindle. The whole school also took park in “Drop Everything and Read”, abandoning their studies for 15 minutes at 12 o’clock to read for pleasure. Congratulations to everyone who dressed up and to all those who got involved in literacy activities. Keep on reading!

Mr Cook : 1 October 1967 – 12 March 2012 It is with great sadness that we must announce the death of Mr Cook who passed away in the early hours of Monday 12th March 2012 after a long struggle against Motor Neurone Disease. Mr Cook was a teacher and Head of Religious Studies at the school from 2001 until 2010 when he became too ill to continue working. He was a highly popular and respected teacher and colleague and a much loved friend of many members of staff. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with his family, two young sons and close friends at this time.

Mr Cook’s funeral will be held during the Easter Holidays for family and close friends. The school will be organising a memorial service later in the year; parents and current and past pupils of the school will be invited to remember Mr Cook and celebrate his life. The school will also commemorate his life with a special award at Awards Evening: “the Cookie Award for Kindness” as Mr Cook’s kindness will always be remembered at the school as one of his most endearing and inspirational qualities.

Visit from a Holocaust Survivor On Wednesday 7th March, Year 12 were visited by Hermann Hirschberger, a Holocaust survivor born in Germany. Mr Hirschberger told us of his life in Germany as a young boy when the Nazis came to power and the torment and bullying he suffered as a result of his Jewish faith, as the Nazis enforced the Nuremburg laws preventing Jews living as other citizens did. Mr Hirschberger was forced to attend a Jewish school far from his home and was regularly physically and verbally attacked merely for being Jewish. He went on to describe how he later escaped the Nazi extermination of Jews by gaining a place on ‘Kinder Transport’ along with his brother. ‘Kinder transport’ was a transport system set up just before the Second World War by the British government to allow Jewish children to leave Germany and live in Britain without a visa.

Unfortunately, Mr Hirschberger’s parents could not join him in Britain and were tragically killed in a concentration camp. Mr Hirschberger has lived in the UK ever since. He gained a good education and became an engineer for Kodak.

Now retired, Mr Hirschberger dedicates his time to teaching others about his experiences in Germany and has gained an MBE for his work. Here at Glenthorne, we found his speech to be both courageous and inspiring as he overcame his distressing childhood to work to prevent a repeat of the horrors of the Nazi persecution. Even when talking about what was a very sensitive subject to him, Mr Hirschberger managed to add a light-hearted touch to his speech, which we all found very admirable. We were also very grateful for him giving up his time to speak to us.

Health Week

Health Week at Glenthorne took place over 20th – 24th February. Our focus was on promoting a

‘Healthy Body Image’, avoiding unrealistic media pressures, and understanding how to develop and

keep a ‘Healthy Mind’.

Through PSHE lessons, and during tutor time and assemblies, pupils across the school explored what

makes a healthy diet, and discussed issues surrounding body image and the Media. Understanding

the importance of emotional and mental well-being was also a key focus during Health Week.

Pupils participated in lunchtime ‘Smoothie Making Workshops’. These were very popular! Pupils

created either a 'Banana and Strawberry Breakfast Smoothie' or a 'Mixed Berry Energy Smoothie'.

Everyone involved loved the taste of the smoothies, and all took our recipes home to try again.

Sports Relief

Pupils from the school have been getting into the spirit of Sport Relief. Our target was to raise

£2,000 for charity. Pupils donated £1 to run the Sport Relief mile and dressed up on a sports-

related theme on Friday 23rd.

Well done to everyone who completed the Sports Relief Mile within their PE lessons and raised

money for the charity to make a difference to those less fortunate both in the UK and in some of

the world’s poorest countries.

On Friday 6th July, Glenthorne High School will host ‘The Glenthorne Games’, the climax of the school sporting calendar. The emphasis of The Games will be on creating a positive and rewarding experience for every pupil, providing opportunities to try new activities and be involved in friendly competition. Pupils will have the chance to participate in either two activities (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) or a day-long activity. Pupils will select preferences from a list of options in advance and choose which activities they participate in. Currently, the activities planned are:

On-site activities: 5-a-side football; netball; tag rugby; rounders; table tennis; ultimate frisbee; gymnastics; dance; trampoline; basketball; golf; BMX; tug-of-war, fitness suite challenges; martial arts and cheerleading.

Off-site activities: swimming; water polo; climbing; archery; golf; 5-a-side football; tennis; cricket; badminton; horse-riding; canoeing; cycling and squash.

Pupils need to start thinking about what activities they would like to take part in. At the be-ginning of the summer term, tutor groups will select their teams. Ensure that you keep active over Easter so you are ready for the sporting event of summer 2012.

We’re ready….are YOU?

Good Luck Miss Cook Many of you will know that Miss Cook is running the London Marathon this year to raise

money for the charity SENSE. SENSE is a brilliant charity that aims to help deaf blind people

of all ages and abilities along their path to leading a fulfilling life, in which they are able to

effectively communicate with the world around them. Miss Cook has now met her target for

fund raising for SENSE so will also be raising money for Motor Neurone Disease. We wish

Miss Cook all the best for the marathon, we know you can do it!

Year 8 Netball Congratulations to the year 8 netball team who came 3rd in the league this year and made it to the semi-finals of the cup on the 20th March. They have all done extremely well. On Tuesday 20th March 2012, we went to Overton High school to play a netball tournament. The first game we

played was against Cheam B and we won 2-0, we then played Greenshaw but we unfortunately lost 3-0. The final

game was against Stanley Park and we won 2-1. As we lost one game we weren’t sure if we would get through,

so we all had mixed emotions waiting for the results. They called out the first semi-finalists… Then they called out

GLENTHORNE, we were all so happy. The final game was against Cheam A, the team all had high hopes but

unfortunately we lost 8-0. We weren’t at all upset as we did very well to get into the semi-finals of a big

competition. It was a fantastic experience and we got to make loads of new friends and it was very good practice

for next season. By Cherelle Oliver

Year 8 Netball Results 27/02/2012 GHS vs Carshalton Girls – Won 10-8

5/03/2012 GHS vs Overton – Lost 16-6

Year 9 Netball Congratulations to the year 9 netball team who came 2nd in the league this year. They also have recently competed in a tournament at Overton for the cup where they made it to the final but lost after extra time and a sudden death goal. This is a fantastic achievement. On Tuesday 20th March, year 9 participated in a netball tournament at Overton Grange High School. We played really well together and these were the results: GHS Vs. Greenshaw -won 5-1 GHS Vs. Stanley Park - drew 3-3 GHS Vs. Beacon - drew 4-4

After these games we got through to the semi-final: Vs. Cheam - won 6-4

We had made to the final against Overton and it was 4-4 at the end of the match, therefore, it went to sudden

death where we were unfortunately defeated. By Rebecca Sillett

Sports Results 6th Form Rugby 7s Glenthorne did very well against some very strong and organised opposition. Particular mention to Noredine Nedjai for his first ever game of rugby! We finished 3rd overall. However, we drew with the eventual winners, who were a rugby academy and we were a disallowed try away from beating the team that came 2nd. Greg Wright controlled the games well using tactical kicking and utilising the strengths and covering the weaknesses of his teammates. But the lack of 7s experience of our players meant we didn’t have the all-round skills to win the tournament. Special mentions to top try-scorer Rhys Mohr and top points scorer Greg Wright. The boys played very well and on another day might have won the competition! Sports Results Year 7 Rugby: Massive congratulations to the year 7 rugby team who are through to the knockout cup competition, due to finishing 2nd in their league. The year 9s and 11s also got through to the knockout shield competition. Year 9 Rugby 7s Tournament On the warmest day of the year and despite minibus troubles, we arrived in good spirits, we didn’t have long to warm up and we were very quickly into our first game. We had a tough first match against a very strong and fast Kingsdale team and went down 26-10. We stepped it up in our next game and beat local sports college Carshalton Boys 38-0. Unfortunately we couldn’t keep this mo-mentum and lost to the hosts Ernest Bevan 33-5. We regrouped for the 3/4 place play off and despite going 5-0 down we rallied and scored 26 unanswered points to beat Carshalton Boys 26-5 and finish 3rd overall.
