It has been an outstanding finale to the football season for the GHS boys’ football teams. Bellisimo! The Glenthorne Head Student team organised a fantastic evening of food, music and en-tertainment for 80 fortunate guests on Thursday 19th May. It was all in the name of chari-ty with over £400 being raised for the 6th Form Prom. As guests arrived, they found the Hall transformed into little Italy and were welcomed by a truly outstanding selection of music played live by ‘I believe in Pluto’. The Head Student team played host and served a delicious three-course meal courtesy of ‘Grazie Mille’, the Italian restaurant in Carshalton. The guests were then treated to a challenging and enter-taining quiz that brought out a real spirit of competition between teams.

È stato fantastico, Felicitazioni!

Italian Night 2011

The evening was a fantastic success! I can only express my gratitude to the Head Student team for their support and commitment to the evening; the band for their profes-sionalism and the guests who made the Italian Night the first sell-out success in Glenthorne's history. Also, special thanks go out to the caterers from Grazie Mille, Carshalton, who worked tirelessly from 4am to ensure the food was perfect. Sure enough they did not fail, as the only complaint I received was from a lady who wished she could take the chef home! Unfortunately, the Italian Night was the final event I will organise at Glenthorne. However, I have faith in next year's Head Student team to carry on the school's tradition of hosting high quality events that eager guests will flock to. And on that note, remember to save me a place! Jamie Miles Head Student, 2010-11

A-D-1 wins heat to perform at 02! On Saturday 21st May, A-D-1 Dance Company travelled to the Bhavan Theatre in West Kensington to perform and compete in The Red Cross Dance competi-tion. The competition runs across the country in various different heats, and we took part in the London heat. The pupils involved ranged from Year 9 to Year 13 and they did the school and themselves proud. Their commitment, attitude and teamwork as a dance company was exceptional and this also was commented on by staff from the Red Cross and other schools taking part. The competition started at 6.30pm with around 10 other groups taking part. Many of the pupils’ parents and friends came along to support them. At the end of the evening they announced which group had won the heat. A-D-1 were announced as winners and now go on to perform at the main gala event at the 02 on Sunday 17th July! The competition was not only about dancing and performing but also helping The Red Cross in raising more awareness about the work they do in the UK and across the world. Part of the challenge was for each dance company to raise £50.00 for the charity. A-D-1 Dance Company pulled together as a team and came up with a variety of differ-ent fund-raising ideas, from a car-boot sale which raised £146.00, sponsored swim and other small events. In total A-D-1 raised over £311.00 for The Red Cross. Miss West - Joint Subject Leader - Dance

The Gala performance at the Indigo O2 is on Sunday 17th July. Tickets are now on sale through the Red Cross website.

Glenthorne’s School Council

Looking back at this past year….

As part of my role of being one of Glenthorne’s Head Students, I have had the privilege to help co-ordinate the School Council meetings alongside Mrs Jarrett who fulfils her role of organising the meetings fantastically, as well as sustaining the motivation of the rest of the School Council team. Throughout the year, I believe we have really enhanced pupil voice, as every single representative within the School Council team, from Year 7 right up to Year 13, embraced the chance of raising the important issues of their year groups at every meeting (held once a half-term), and taking effective action in order to make a positive change to the school itself. A simple yet successful ex-ample would be the excellent work of Year 9 representatives, Max Dandy, Emily Bennett and Folu Odimayo; at their Year Council Meeting, they felt that some significant issues had to be ad-dressed, such as the inquiry of improving the KS3 toilets, and raising concern about unsafe paving outside the AB block. After explaining these issues at the School Council meeting, the representa-tives professionally produced a formal letter to Mr Hume, asking him kindly to take some time in order to solve these problems. As a result of the great work from the School Council, the issues were effectively resolved after being considered by Mr Hume. Furthermore, there has also been a great focus with the School Council team on expanding their relations with governors of Glenthorne, and even the neighbouring schools in Sutton. Taking this into account, Jamie Miles and I, who has assisted in chairing the School Council meetings over the past year, attended various meetings with representatives from High Schools such as Carshalton Boys, Cheam and Wallington, in order to gain a wider understanding about how other schools op-erate their School Council. As a result, a great bond was created and the meetings really benefited the School Council as we established newer ideas on how to enhance the pupils’ voice at Glenthorne even further, such as having a board dedicated to the School Council from September onwards, where all the achieve-ments of the School Council team can be clearly presented. In addition, the representatives were also invited to attend a Parent Governor Council Meeting, allowing the students to express their thoughts on the school council system and for the Parents to see the great achievements of the School Council. By establishing this relationship, the repre-sentatives felt that their voices were really being considered by the school, and we hope that as a result of this, greater successes can be achieved in order to make Glenthorne the perfect place for everybody. As a result, the School Council team has definitely been stronger than ever, and each representa-tive has done a magnificent job of representing their year groups and raising important issues at all the meetings, as well as taking time out to make a positive change. I have enjoyed my time co-ordinating the School Council over the past year greatly and believe strongly that the School Council team will continue doing an excellent job in representing the pupil voice of Glenthorne. The GOSCARs!

The Media and Film Studies department held its annual celebration of students’ work, the GOSCARs, on 5th May in the school hall. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of students and pupils throughout KS3, 4 and 5. Every Media or Film student in Film Club, and years 9-13, had their print or moving image work shown and many of them won awards for their achievement. The event was split into two sessions, KS3& 4, and KS5. Demi Hawkes and Daniel Prenderville did a wonderful job as hosts for the KS3&4 evening, Daniel looked especially dashing in his suit and bow tie! Gabrielle Roachford and Sam Liddle were smooth and professional as KS5 hosts, leading us through an evening of excep-tional work. It also gave us the chance to say goodbye to our year 13 students, some of whom have studied media for the last four years. We would like to wish them good luck as they move on from Glenthorne. A brilliant time was had by all, and we look for-

ward to inviting family and friends of all Media

and Film students to come and celebrate their

hard work in 2012!

Y11s make history!!

The Year 11 boys’ football team capped off an amazing five years by becoming the first team in the history of the school to lift the London Cup. The cup run had been a very difficult one including trips to Wansted Flats, East Ham, Barking and fi-nally to Welling in Kent where we were to face Knights’ Academy from Lewisham. After winning both the quarter-final and semi-final on penalties, the Year 11 team were expecting another tough game. The preparations were not great, with the journey taking 2 hours and our lone supporter from school, Mr Roles, struggling to outshout the 60 or so Knights supporters. With no time for a team talk, or warm-up, Mr Summers decided to keep the same starting 11 as the semi-final and play defensively by adopting a 4-5-1 formation rather than the normal 4-4-2 that had served the team well for 5 years. Once we had a foothold in the game, Charlie Craig was moved back up front in the usual 4-4-2 formation. This paid off immediately with Glenthorne being awarded a free kick which was swung in by Jack Eden, the Knights’ keeper managed to parry the ball, but Bobby Price was on hand to head the ball into the unguarded net. An early breakthrough was more than we expected but the team grew in strength. Spencer Cridlin was rarely called into action in goal but did what he had to do well, the defence held firm in front of him with Jack Eden and MOM, Ardit Pelingu, the rocks in the centre. Courtney Asiedu put in a great performance in his new-found position at left back and the ever reliable Jack Burgess showed why he had skippered the team for 5 years. Glenthorne won the midfield battle against the much bigger opposition, Bobby Price and Billy Casey bossed the centre of the park, often helped by Charlie Craig dropping deep to outnumber the opposi-tion. This left the pocket-dynamite Dean Hills up front on his own for most of the game. Spencer Smith and Zenio Aitken-Simon worked tirelessly up and down the flanks, pushing the opposition back and supporting the defence when required. Glenthorne got well on top in the second half with Charlie Craig having a great shot from 30 yards which was tipped over by the keeper. A great passing move involving at least 5 players finished with Zenio Aitken-Simon breaking clear to score what we thought was the winning goal. All the players celebrated in the corner flag and ref gave the goal, unfortunately the sharp-eyed linesman had spotted that Zenio has strayed off-side and Glenthorne still had work to do. In a very tense last 5 minutes, Glenthorne controlled the game and limited the opposition’s chances, substitutes Harry Phillips, Luke Hicks and Jack Diggins came on for the tired players and helped to keep Glenthorne in the driving seat. Dean Haley caused lots of problems with his pace and could have scored at least two goals through his perseverance. Josh St John Mosse was eagerly waiting his turn, but the ref blew for full time before he had the chance to get on. Glenthorne had won the London Cup which was the one trophy that Mr Summers could not win with previous teams. District, County and even National Cups had been easier to win. The bribe of a free McDonald’s to the boys, if they ever won the London Cup, when they were in Year 8 proved key as they hadn’t forgotten this, so a detour was made on the long journey home. Thanks go out to all the players and parents who have been part of the success, also to Mr Jones who handed over the team in Year 8. Last season we won the District Cup, District 5-a-side and won the District league without conceding a goal, but this achievement will be hard for any team to match in the future. I hope to see many of the boys in the Football Acade-my at Glenthorne next year where we can build on the suc-cess of this season with both the U16 and U18 squads to-gether for the first time. Mr Summers Subject Leader - PE

London Cup Success – At Last!

The U18 boys’ football team became the first Glenthorne team in history to reach the London Cup Final. The squad was bolstered by Academy players from Carshalton Athletic, but the core of the team was made up of students who have been at Glenthorne since Y7, namely Nathan Powell, James Duke, Lewis Wilson, Jamie Decruz, Luke Foulsham and Daniel Decruz. The highlights of season were coming from 1-0 down to register an amazing 11-1 victory away to Welling in the National Cup followed by beating the reigning champions Harefield 2-1 in the National Cup and coming from 2-0 down to defeat Eastbury 4-2 in the semi-final of the London Cup. In the final itself, Glenthorne battled hard and came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw with Campion School with goals from Lewis Wilson and James King who had an excellent game in the centre of defence. The game was extremely hard fought and 7 players from the 2 teams were cautioned during the game. Luke Badiali made a vital save to take the game to extra-time and with Man-of-the-Match Dom Lugard revelling in his new position as sweeper it looked like there could only be one winner. Sonny Ayers nearly capped an amazing season with a superb overhead kick in extra-time only to see the keeper make the best save of the match. Glenthorne had exited the National Cup and County Cups on penalties and were hoping to make it third time lucky, but the rules of London Schools deemed that the trophy should be shared. It would be left to the U16 team to see if they could be the first team to win the London cup outright. The Glenthorne U18 team had entered several competitions this year and only suffered two defeats in 90min games. Both of these were to Wilsons, one in the Surrey League and the other in the Dis-trict Cup Final. To reach the District Cup Final Glenthorne had defeated Greenshaw 4-3 then had penalty success against Overton Grange in the semi-final with keeper David Matthews the hero! Glenthorne were undefeated in the other league games and this team was mainly non Academy stu-dents. There were some excellent performance including the 9-1 defeat of Thomas More where all the scorers were Glenthorne students: James Duke scoring 3, George Proctor 2, Ryan Clark 2 with Lewis Wilson and Ryan Payne grabbing one each. It was Year 12s Nathan Bedford, Tom Sullivan, Daniel Decruz, Jimmy Dale, Romeo Nazereth, Evan Beard, Matt Sangster, George Proctor and Ryan Clark who made up the bulk of the team. This bodes well for next season as all boys will be one year older and more experienced.

National Cup Finals for Glenthorne Footballers

Bobby Price (Carshalton Athletic), Spencer Cridlin (Sutton United) and Charlie Craig (AFC Wimbledon) from the Glenthorne Y11 team are pictured dressed in the ties of Surrey Schools’ FA as they all represented the Surrey County U16 Football team this season. It was a very successful season with the boys reaching the South East Counties Final where they beat Norfolk. The team also reached the National Cup Final which was played at the home of Dagenham & Redbridge. Unfortunately they could not become the first Surrey team to win the trophy since 1985 as they lost to very strong team from Humberside.

Callum Wilson (AFC Wimbledon) and Ollie O’Dwyer (Reading FC) from the Glenthorne Y9 team are pictured in their Surrey School’s FA ties were both selected for the U14 Surrey County U14 Football team along with Toby Young (Chelsea FC). The team was selected and coached by Mr Summers and Mr Griffin who knew the boys would not let them down against the country’s top talent.

Page 11

And so it proved, as during the season Surrey defeated Sussex, Suffolk, Kent, Cardiff & Va-le as well as drawing with Inner London and Middlesex on their way to winning their South East County League as well as reaching two cup Finals. The first final was played at Millwall FC in a 25,000 all-seated capacity stadium, unfortunately Surrey came out second best to a strong Inner London side, but both Callum and Ollie put in tremendous performances and it was a good experience before the big National Cup Final. The National Cup final was to be played at the home of Brentford FC against Oxfordshire who had defeated favourites Merseyside in the semi-final. Ollie O’Dwyer put in a com-manding performance at the back and was replaced by Callum Wilson. With Surrey leading 2-1, the game was deep into injury time and the referee awarded a harsh penalty which was dispatched by the Oxfordshire player. The Surrey players were distraught, but battled hard in extra-time with Callum helping to steady ship. The final whistle blew with the game at 2-2. It was down to luck of penalties, luckily for Callum and Ollie, Surrey had won the shoot-out before it got to their turn and both Glenthorne boys became the first pupils from the school to win the National Cup and help Surrey achieve the feat for the first time since 1985. The boys are pictured below with their trophies, the national Cup and two very proud Glenthorne PE teachers.

U15 Boys T20 Vase Competition On Wednesday 25th May 2011, Glenthorne took 9 Year 10 boys down to Beddington Park to compete in the Sutton 8-a-side cricket competition. I believe we had a great chance with the quality Glenthorne had with five of the nine boys playing cricket outside school for their respective clubs. The games were 8 overs per team, with 8 players, so this meant lots of effort needed in the field, accurate bowling and of course powerful batting. We arrived in good time to watch Cheam and Overton (both in our pool) play in the first of the pool matches, whilst Carshal-ton, Greenshaw and Stanley Park battled it out in the other pool. It was clear to see early on that Overton were going to dominate Cheam, as Overton were winners within the first four overs of chasing a low total. With this in mind, a choice to field proved to be the correct decision. Billy Dickson, bowling very quick and with great line and length, got Overton’s star batter on the first ball of their innings, which was an awesome break-through and geared us up to keep them to 51 runs. Jamie Montebel-lo and Connor Smither (captain and vice captain) were to open and chase the 51 run target. Some very patient batting and well-timed shots, helped us reach the total in the 7th over. Montebello (16 not out) Smither (26 not out). Our win was a must for us to proceed into the final. We batted first, so as Montebello and Smither had just batted in the previous game, we opened with Bradley Worby and Billy Dickson. Again an excellent batting display saw Worby hit a quick-fire 32, with a couple of well guided 4s to the cover boundary, with Dickson helping himself to 20, including a HUGE 6 back over the bowlers head on the last ball of the innings. We gave them 67 runs to chase, which proved too many for Cheam. A great bowling display by Connor Smither saw him pick up 3 wickets and narrowly miss out on a hat-trick. This game also saw Lamar Lecky, Joe Bennett and Michael Hewitt showing some great field-ing skills to stop a few shots going for 4s. We eventually restricted Cheam to 31 runs, which was great and set up a final vs. Stanley Park (who went through on least wickets lost).

The Final The flick of a coin saw Stanley Park decide to bowl, so again Montebello and Smither were in to post a huge total for Stanley Park to chase. It all started very well with an average of 12 runs scored off each over, with Connor hitting TWO huge 6s and Jamie Montebello hitting an unbeaten 47 runs. We scored 84 runs which was amazing and gave the boys loads of confidence to restrict Stanley Park. Again great bowling from our star men, Dickson, Montebello and Smither saw Stanley Park starting very slowly and becoming very much behind the run rate. Some awesome fielding from Lamar Lecky and James Masters saw Stanley Park’s openers getting frustrated and the wicket eventually came with an in-swinging delivery from Smither, a nick which carried to the safe hands of Billy Webb at wicket-keeper, who was excellent all day. A convincing win, sees us go through to another final against either East Surrey College or Therfield School and the winners of this play for the prestigious accolade of best cricket school in Surrey for 8-a-side cricket. Team: Jamie Montebello (c) Connor Smither (vc) Billy Dickson, Billy Webb, Bradley Worby, James Masters, Michael Hewitt, Joe Bennett, Lamar Lecky. Player: Runs: Wickets: Montebello (63) (3) Smither (55) (6) Dickson (26) (2) Worby (32) (0) A fantastic TEAM performance and let’s make sure we win the next match! Mr Griffin
