Management Programs

Page 2: Gestiones y educaciones

Greetings from Dr. Katy Campbell, Dean

I am very excited to join with the staff and friends of Extension

to celebrate a century of engaging with communities in Alberta

and beyond!

From the days of the rural Department of Extension “bookmobile” and

Magic Lantern shows to the establishment of CKUA, the Arctic University,

painting classes in Banff,  and our first graduate program in communications

and technology, Extension has been a consistent incubator and innovator, always

staying true to our original mandate,  “to bring the University to the people.”

Today, in the year of our 100th birthday, the Faculty of Extension offers over 600 courses, in 23 programs, to learners

from every sector – public, private, and non-profit - from residential interior design and occupational health and safety

to information access and privacy, community-based research and evaluation, languages, fine arts, natural resources

management, and teaching and learning in higher education. Our graduates work in areas of policy, sustainability careers,

planning, municipal administration, educational institutions, public relations, and publishing, to name a few.

Always evolving, the Faculty of Extension continues to engage with communities both near and far, through learning,

citizenship, and discovery activities in the Community- University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth and Families

CUP),  the City Regions Studies Center (CRSC), the Centre for Public Involvement, and a wide range of community-based

research on such issues as palliative care, Aboriginal health education, public alerting, sustainability and the social economy,

public legal education, social advocacy, language and community, social media, program evaluation, early school success

in diverse communities, and social planning, among others. The Faculty of Extension holds a unique place in the lives of

Albertans, working for 100 years to widen access to post-secondary learning and increasing flexibility in providing those

learning opportunities through alternative scheduling, various learning formats, types of credentials, and use of technologies.

I feel incredibly lucky to be the current Dean of this amazing Faculty.  We have a talented staff of researchers, teachers,

designers, evaluators, and administrators working with a large and diverse community of learners from all backgrounds

and with high expectations for a transformative learning experience. Along with the University of Alberta campus, our

partners include education providers, private industry, the public sector, professional associations and not-for-profit

organizations around the province, country, and world. Our plans for our next century include developing pathways into

higher learning for global learning communities, assisting communities to build capacity in sustainable ways.  Please join

us in many celebratory events throughout 2012.

Business AnalysisProfessional Citation

A growing profession that is highly in demand – Business Analysts work as a catalysts for new growth within their organizations. Using tasks and techniques to identify business needs and opportunities – and then making recommendations on the best solution – it is a position that can produce large organizational change and create incredible technological advancement. Aimed at individuals positioned between business and technology, this program will be extremely beneficial for Business Managers, Project Managers, and System Analysts.

The Business Analysis Professional Citation from the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension is significantly different from programs currently offered at other institutions. Whereas many other programs choose specific aspects of Business Analysis to teach, our program focuses on the entire lifecycle of a project – from initiation and diagnosis through to successful implementation of the solution.

Participants within this program will receive world–class instruction and will gain greater understanding of this position by studying the overview of the role, enterprise analysis and architecture, requirements gathering, requirement analysis, scope management techniques, communication skills, facilitation, process and workflow analysis, interface and data design, solution verification and validation, as well as testing and training leading into a full implementation of a project.

GUIDING SUCCESSFUL TEAMS (14 HOURS)

Organizations have always relied on the success of teams in some form. In today’s dynamic and competitive work environment there is more emphasis on groups of people, working in teams, taking joint responsibility for achieving results. Even if the team goals are clear, there may be no team commitment to the group goals or no consensus on the means of achieving those goals.

Teams require careful planning, structuring, and maintaining. A key ingredient essential to the development and maintenance of teams is the leadership and guidance that teams receive through the stages of growth. Team Leaders have to be able to work effectively within this environment, build solid working relationships and get the best out of their teams in a wide range of situations and environments.

This two day course explores the key factors that make teams successful and the skills and tools required to build effective teams and guide them through their development.

IMPLEMENTING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ) AT WORK (7 HOURS)

Have you ever wondered why some people succeed while others, equally intelligent, fail? Or, why some people seem to have so much empathy and self–awareness while others bumble along in an interpersonal ‘fog’? What is emotional intelligence and why does it matter?

EQ styles play a very important role in daily workplace interactions such as learning how to respond to criticism. How to deal with diversity. Understanding the need for tolerance with certain behaviors or situations or how to motivate ourselves and others. According to many experts, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) may be more important than IQ in determining success, both on the job and in personal life.

In this workshop, you will:• Understandthefiveessentialelementsinvolvedwith

INFLUENCING DIFFICULT PEOPLE (7 HOURS)

Difficult people have learned that their approaches help them get their way. It seems that a small number of difficult people cause most of the stress in our lives—robbing us of our productivity and satisfaction. Our usual responses only seem to make it worse.

In this interactive workshop, you will learn to recognize the patterns some people use to develop the skills and responses needed to deal with these patterns more effectively and productively. Short–term tactics necessary to preserve your sanity and your priorities will be practiced, as well as long–term strategies on how to create cooperation and more productive relationships. You will develop a personal action plan to build and sustain your influence in difficult situations and in life in general.

LEADING, SUPERVISING, AND MOTIVATING (14 HOURS)

In the current business environment of economic uncertainty and rapid change, the challenge to remain sustainable and competitive while focusing on growth can be significant. The key success factor in meeting these challenges for businesses and teams come from the quality of leadership and the effectiveness of supervision practices within the organization. Leaders and supervisors, who realize the value and learn the skills of motivating a workforce to move through trying times, produce exceptional results.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS: TRAINING FOR SUCCESS (7 HOURS)

Why mental toughness training? Every business needs people who are talented, driven, and mentally tough. Results are determined by the ability to consistently take the actions needed to produce superior results. In fact, research shows that more than any other factor, mental toughness is the key to confidence, motivation, and success any time your life gets difficult.

have you ever wondered:• Howtoremainpersistentandconfidentwhenadversityhits?• Howtocopeeffectivelywhenothersaretreatingyoupoorly?• Howtomotivateyourselftotakeactiononcriticaltasks?• Howtocomethroughconsistentlywithgreatperformances

in presentations and key meetings?

Mental toughness is a set of practices that enables you to master yourself mentally and emotionally so you can get the results you want. At one time, it wasn’t fashionable to talk about emotions in the workplace–they were personal issues to be left at home. As a result, many employees have not perfected their mental toughness skills. Today, progressive organizations realize that how much you know about mental toughness–and how mentally tough you are will be a major factor determining how successful you will be and how much you will enjoy life along the way.

This seminar has one main objective: to teach you how to become your own success coach so you can get the results you want in your job and your life. Specifically, it will teach you the practices of mental toughness so you can overcome fear, take action, and create confidence for yourself in the face of any challenge. It has become common knowledge that highly successful people are different in their thinking and behavior than other people. But what are the unseen, often unknown mental toughness practices of these individuals?

SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE MANAGEMENT (14 HOURS)

There is mounting evidence to suggest that what fuels long term business success has less to do with operational excellence and more to do with management innovation – new ways of thinking about, engaging, mobilizing and organizing people (Gary Hamel – The Future of Management, 2007). THE SUPERVISOR AS A TRAINER (15 HOURS)

“When I took this job they never told me I would have to train people.” Sound familiar? In today’s ever-changing workplace our work roles are continually evolving and expanding. New expectations require that we not only share our experience, but that we train others in a manner that ensures a transfer of knowledge and/or skills to those who will utilize what they learn to change their behaviour on the job. In order to increase our competence and confidence in our new role as trainers, we will investigate how best to identify training needs, plan our training and how we can use the learner centered approach to create a climate conducive to learning.

General Information

DROP/AUDIT DEADLINE

The drop/audit deadline occurs approximately 20% into the course. When a student withdraws from a graded course before or by this deadline, we say that they have “dropped” the course — in which case the course will not be displayed on the student’s official transcript. This is also the deadline for submitting audit requests.

WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE

The withdrawal deadline occurs approximately 70% into the course. If you withdraw from a graded course before or by the withdrawal deadline, the course will be displayed on your transcript with a “WP” code (“Withdrew with Permission”). Withdrawals are not accepted after this deadline, which means your grade will be shown in your official transcript.

WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURE

To withdraw from a course, use the “Drop” page on Bear Tracks. Alternatively, you may send a withdrawal request in writing to the registration office. A Withdrawal Request form can be downloaded from our website at www.extension.ualberta.ca/register/policies. Please note that non-attendance does not constitute notice of withdrawal from a course and, in a Citation or Certificate course, may result in a failing grade.

AUDIT PROCEDURE

If you are enrolled in a graded course and want to change your enrolment status to “audit”, you must fill out the Audit Request form located at www.extension.ualberta.ca/register/auditing and submit it to the registration office prior to the drop/audit deadline.

STUDENT ONLINE SERVICES - FREqUENTLY ASKED qUESTIONS All Extension students are assigned a Student ID number, a CCID, and a UAlberta email address. This means greater access to your student record in a safe online environment. You will find detailed information about our student online services at www.extension.ualberta.ca/beartracks. Below are responses to some questions you may have.

WHAT IS A CCID?

As a student of the U of A, Faculty of Extension, you have two unique identifiers used to mediate your relationship with the University. One is your Student ID, a seven-digit number found on the upper right corner of your course confirmation notice. The other is your Campus Computing Identification (referred to as CCID), a set of letters automatically generated using your name as a starting point.

General Information

WHY DO I NEED A CCID?

Your CCID gives you access to your University-provided email address and to many computer-based services, including Bear Tracks, Career and Placement Services (CAPS), eClass (for online courses), and connection to the University Wireless System (UWS).

HOW DO I GET MY CCID?

If you are new to the U of A, soon after registering for a course you will receive an email providing you with a CCID and temporary password. The CCID and temporary password come in an attachment to the message welcoming students to the University of Alberta. Please be sure to check for the “welcome message” in the spam/junk mail folder of the email account you provided with your registration, since it is possible that this message will be picked up by your mail filters.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I RECEIVE MY CCID?

Before you use your UAlberta email account or any of the online services, you must first activate your CCID. To do so, log into the UAlberta password website (https://password.srv.ualberta.ca) and change your assigned temporary password to a permanent password of your choice. Using your temporary password to access Bear Tracks will suspend your system access, and you will need to contact AICT (Academic Information and Communication Technologies, at 780.492.9400) to ask for another password.

WHAT IS BEAR TRACKS?

Bear Tracks provides students access to their personal information in a safe and secure online environment. You can use Bear Tracks to build a schedule, enrol in and pay for courses, check your grades, print tax slips, update your contact information, and much more.

HOW DO I ACCESS BEAR TRACKS AND MY NEW UALBERTA EMAIL?

Once you have set up your permanent password, go to www.extension.ualberta.ca and click on “Apps@Ualberta” (top of the screen) to access your email account, or on “Bear Tracks” (right beside the link for Apps@UAlberta) to access Bear Tracks.

CAN I USE A DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESS?

Information on course changes and all other official University of Alberta email correspondence will be sent to your UAlberta email. You can configure your UAlberta email to suit your needs, including automatically forwarding all messages you receive to a different email address of your choice. To add a forwarding address, log into your UAlberta email and click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the page. Select “Email settings”, click on the “Forwarding” tab, and follow the instructions provided on the screen.

HOW DO I ACCESS MY ONLINE COURSE?

Online courses are accessed through eClass Powered by Moodle. Click on the eClass link at www.extension.ualberta.ca, and use your CCID and password to log in. For a detailed tutorial, visit www.extension.ualberta.ca/elearning.

WHAT IF I NEED HELP WITH THE ONLINE SERVICES?

The AICT Helpdesk can assist you with more information on accessing any computing resources provided by the University of Alberta. You can access the AICT Helpdesk online (http://helpdesk.ualberta.ca), by email ([email protected]), or by phone (780.492.9400). When contacting the AICT Helpdesk, you must provide your seven-digit Student ID number (found on the upper right corner of your registration confirmation notice).
