GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT - Rob McPake Greetings again members; so much to report and an ideal time to converse with you all again.
As you will be aware, the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held last Sunday, 24th March 2019 in
our auditorium. The meeting, attended by one hundred and one (101) of our members, ran relatively
smoothly and witnessed avid participation during the Recommendations agenda item of the meeting. Thank
you to all members who were here in support; to our Club auditor, Phil Jones from W.W.Vick & Co; Terry
Healy, the members’ appointed Returning Officer; Tom Zdun, Senior Development Manager from Capital
Bluestone; and our esteemed President, Bill Harrigan, who, once again, chaired and co-ordinated the
meeting most professionally. A special thank you to our catering volunteers: Barbara, Yvonne, Peggy, Marie, Diane, Jeanette &
Michael, whom I aptly referred to as “The Magnificent Seven”!!! Wonderful work team; very much appreciated! This being a
biennial year, a ballot was conducted to elect a new committee, resulting in only one change to the previous Board of Directors.
Congratulations to Robyn Mander-Ross on her election to the new Board. Conversely, on a sombre note, Jason Perica, who was
appointed to the Board in February 2018, missed narrowly in the election ballot. Jason’s meticulous knowledge and
understanding of the development process, as well as his immense enthusiasm for suggestion during General Business
discussions, proved an asset to the Board of Management. Thank you so much for your support and input, Jason, from which
learning was derived.
The cessation of trading on Sunday, 31st March 2019 will represent a milestone in your Club’s recent history. After
eleven (11) years of contract service to the Club, our catering contractor, Sydney Fine Catering, will discontinue service. This
follows from an admission from the food premises proprietor, Raymond Wong, received on Wednesday, 13th February 2019, of
inability to meet monthly contract rental payments and a request to waive these payments indefinitely to sustain his business.
The request from Sydney Fine Catering was subsequently declined and an advertisement calling for expressions of interest for a
new contract caterer was placed on the popular industry recruitment website, White Now. We received a strong response from
interested applicants, thirteen (13) in total, from which a short list of four (4) was chosen for on premises interviews by a
nominated sub- committee of the Board. This has resulted in the appointment of the successful applicant: Costa Bakoulis, from
the Asteri Group, formed in 2013 to provide premium-catering services in bistro/brassiere. We welcome Costa and his family to
our Club with open arms. With over thirty five (35) years industry experience, including licenced Clubs, I am sure we will receive
quality cuisine with a smile. When it comes to European, we all love Werris Creek!! In order to enable a smooth transition for
our new caterer, the kitchen will be closed for a week. The transition will entail a preliminary clear out; maintenance check;
thorough contract cleaning; organisation of point of sale program and pricing; preparation and provision of menu; inventory
check; and stock provisions by our new proprietor. We will make provision for our responsible service of alcohol requirement to
provide food by supplying pies, rolls, sandwiches and pasties from the lounge bar. Please be patient as a successful transition
requires planning and foresight as well as time.
Members will also be acutely aware the Club’s trading hours will change from Wednesday, 3rd April 2019. The Club will
now open every day at 11:00am instead of 10:00am. Additionally, trading cessation times on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will
change to 9:00pm instead of 10:00pm; Wednesday closing will be forwarded to 10:00pm instead of 11:00pm. These changes
have been introduced primarily to reduce the Club’s bottom line wage expenses and sustain trading operation until the
development phase commences, the considered timeframe being 12-18 months. I extend apologies to members who are
inconvenienced by these changes while, simultaneously, calling on your support and understanding in taking into account the
viability aspect of instituting the changes. In the same vein, there has been a change to our monthly entertainment venue with
the continuation of musical artists on Friday and Saturday nights and discontinuation of performers on Thursdays and Sundays.
This will be reviewed and monitored over coming months in the Board’s revenue summary reports.
Don’t forget members, our 2ND Chance Jackpot draw has reached the pinnacle $1,000 amount and MUST BE WON this
evening. Yes, that’s right, its instant win, not spin to win tonight. Someone will walk out with a grand in the hand. Be here for
tonight’s lucky draw. Tickets on sale at 5:30pm; main draw at 6:30pm; 2nd Chance draw 7:30pm. Be here to win!
Although trading times have changed somewhat, our doors are still open wide, at the Club We All Love: Club Bondi Junction!
CLUB PRESIDENTS REPORT - Bill Harrigan Hello Members; Last Sunday we held the Club’s 47th Annual General Meeting in the Club Auditorium which was well attended by just over 100 members. This was over our expectations so first up my thanks to Yvonne Calder and Sharon and their mighty volunteer group for managing to provide sufficient food for the lunch after the meeting. The results of the election returned all the outgoing Board with the exception of Jason Perica who just missed out. We welcomed Robyn Mander-Ross to the Board as a Director. On a sadder note the loss of Jason Perica from the Board is most unfortunate as
Jason was a co-delegate on the Building Group Committee and a person well versed in Town Planning and Development issues. The Board is currently looking at a way to retain Jason on that Committee or as an advisor. The meeting provided myself and the representative from Capital Bluestone, Tom Zdun, to provide an update on the latest situation regarding the proposed development of the Club. Currently the development is under review and there is a meeting with Waverley Council scheduled for August and a Court hearing if necessary and likely in November so not much is happening at the moment. We also took the opportunity to tell the members present of certain changes to the Clubs hours of operation, some changes to the entertainment nights and also improving our raffles with small meat trays but many more of them. Members will also be allowed to choose their own trays with the exception of the large tray/s at the end of each raffle. I am sure the members will appreciate this. We are also looking at the free Wednesday evening raffle where members receive a free ticket when they enter the Club and swipe their card, and each time they purchase a beverage. The tickets may be placed into the barrel until the last draw and the draws will be staggered. This will be given a trial and may also be trialled on a Sunday as the Sunday raffles are not as successful as hoped. We have also selected a new caterer from over a dozen expressions of interest. We are moving away from the predominantly Asian meal menu to Australian-European cuisine. Sydney Fine Catering will cease to operate on the 31st March and the new caterer will commence as soon as the kitchen receives a thorough cleaning. Please welcome Costa and his family to our Club. For those who want a copy of the Annual Report they are available at reception or through the office and I am sure the General Manager will also provide information providing the recommended changes. See you in our Club.

CMDA BURSARY MELBOURNE RESTAURANT TOUR WITH KEN BURGIN FROM SILVER CHEF March 16, 2019/in Club IQ, Membership, News & Views /
Hitting the streets – Alex Patterson and Graeme Tonks I recently caught up with Graeme Tonks from Bondi RSL who was full of enthusiasm and praise for the recent completed hospitality tour. He explained that this trip was very enlightening and out of 10 gave it an 11! So impressed with Kens knowledge of the scene in Melbourne, Graeme didn’t know where to start with all the things he discovered. From pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, diners, street food, bars and more. Melbourne has it all on offer and visiting the out of the way, quirky venues that offer something very different was a real highlight for Graeme. He explains that he has come back with so many ideas, he can’t wait to start writing them down and presenting them to his colleagues. I asked Graeme in the context of clubs what did he find. He said Franktown RSL was an amazing set up with the CEO growing membership dramatically with his strategic directions and ideas. Ideas that mainly revolved around food and doing things a bit differently. Engaging food vans to compliment the clubs offering. It was a jammed packed 4 days that started at 8.30am and finished around 10pm. Graeme ate food he had never heard of and experienced things that really made him go ‘wow’! It was go, go, go and with his expanding waistline he is back in the thick of it. I must say Graeme enthusiasm is infectious and I have a hit list of places to visit when next I’m down there.

SUB-BRANCH REPORT
- Sue Welman (Secretary) Hello members, It was pleasing to see so many members at the Sub-Branch AGM considering the weather was so inclement. We welcomed four new Affiliate
Members: Robyn Mander-Ross, Keith Young, Anthony Manning and Yvonne Calder. (To be confirmed by State Branch.) Two new committee members were elected and they are Troy Nicoll (Service member) and Barbara Urquhart (Affiliate) and we welcome them both and look forward to working together. With the Women’s Auxiliary now inactive a Volunteer group was formed that did a great job in catering for lunch for the AGM. Again our thanks to the volunteer group led by Yvonne Calder for providing salads and to Greg Goodieson and Erle Lindsay for their barbecuing skills. Letters have been sent to our Patrons Peter King and the Major of Waverley John Wakefield confirming their position as our sub-Branch Patrons. A final reminder has been sent to any un-financial members to renew their RSL and Club membership as soon as possible or they will be deemed un-financial for 2019. Have a nice weekend.
