From the Relieving Principal … It’s hard to believe that Spring is knocking on the door and we about to say goodbye to Winter. Last week the students and teachers took the opportunity to have some fun by getting dressed up for Book Week. There were many different characters who visited our playground and classrooms last week. It was great to see our Kindergarten students really enjoying their first experience at Book Week. It was a good opportunity for our older classes to spend some time with our younger students and share their favourite books. Unfortunately, the weather stopped PSSA from proceeding last Friday. Luckily, there had been a spare week put aside and now the semi-finals will be played this Friday and Grand Finals, Friday September 8. Good luck to our two Rugby League teams, junior boys and girls Soccer sides along with our Year 4 and 6 Netball teams. We encourage all parents who plan on going to watch their children to cheer on the teams and ensure all comments are positive ones. As always the safety and well-being of our students is our number one priority. Parents are reminded that vehicle access to school grounds is not permitted unless prior permission has been sought and given. We have had a number of students reporting late to school over this last week. We understand on those rare occasions that an unexpected event may lead to a one off late arrival. However, some of the faces being seen lately are the same ones. The school expects students to arrive on time for the start of the school day. We ask parents to support the standards we are setting for their children to help them develop good habits for later in life. As this will be my last report as Relieving Principal, as Mr Corcoran will return on Monday, I would like to thank the staff for their great work and support over the last month. Over this time, the GPK community has showed why our school is a very good one. The parents and students have supported and been involved in numerous activities which have showcased their enthusiasm, generosity and positive attitude. Personally I would like to thank Mrs Hosking and Ms Stojanoska for their leadership and support, as the Relieving Deputy Principals during this time. Thank you to Mrs Smith and her team for their work in the office over the last month. Finally, here is wishing all the Dads a very happy Fathers’ Day for this Sunday. I hope you have an enjoyable day with your families and get the chance to put your feet up for the day. Week 6 Term 3 28 August 2018

NAPLAN School Readiness Test (SRT) - Students in Year Three and Year Five will be participating in the NAPLAN SRT next week, on Monday Tuesday and possibly Wednesday in the computer lab.

The school readiness test is designed to check a school’s readiness to conduct NAPLAN Online.

The readiness test will consist of two assessments: an omnibus test with reading, conventions of language and numeracy items, and a writing task. The assessments take about 40 minutes each. Students in Years 3 and 5, participate in the school readiness test. Year 3 students will not participate in a writing assessment.

Winter PSSA Sport – Semi-Finals were called off last week due to inclement weather conditions. PSSA payments paid last week will be carried across to this week. This week Junior Boys Football, Girls Football, Years 4 & 6 Netball, Junior & Senior Rugby League will all play at Endeavour Sports Reserve, Maud Street Fairfield West.

Safe, Respectful Learner Program - The focus rule for Week 6 is ‘Be Respectful, Support and include others’. We feel happier when others are friendly, help us and include us in their games and discussions. It is important to treat others in the same manner. Please discuss this with your children. Values Education - The value for Week 6 is Concentration. Concentration is when we direct all our thoughts and efforts towards something. It is the ability to use intense mental efforts and give complete attention to focus steadily on a task, subject or idea. Concentration:

• Leads to using our energies to learn more effectively • Improves memory and mental poise • Enables us to gain a sense of achievement and be the best we can • Helps us to achieve our goals • Can help others get inspired to concentrate and achieve their goals

Please help your child/children to realize the benefits of concentration by practicing it maybe when they are completing their homework this week.
