Issue 9. 19 June 2015 From the Principal Last weekend the main focus of the Kilvington Board Retreat was the draft Strategic Plan 2016-2020 which up to this point has been an ongoing and most important piece work conducted by the School Executive in consultation with staff. On the Saturday morning, the Board received excellent input from select staff on a range of issues. The Director of Marketing and Development, Camilla Fiorini, set the scene with a presentation highlighting the main demographic trends in Victorian education. The Academic Dean of Performing Arts, Mr Sasha Stella, inspired the Board with his vision and possibilities for the future within the Performing Arts program, and then the Academic Dean of Health and Physical Education, Mr Steve Bustin, and the Head of Sport, Mr Ben Bishop, stirred the Board with their exciting ideas and opportunities for the future in Sport. Much was achieved by the end of the Retreat, with considerable clarity brought to a number of future directions and possibilities. One of the most exciting developments was the Board’s affirmation of its intent to build a Sports Complex as soon as possible on the School grounds, possibly as early as 2017. Excellent progress was also made in exploring ways to develop current play areas for students. The opportunity for other Kilvington stakeholders – students, parents, and Alumni - to discuss the Strategic Plan will take place in Term 4. I thank the Board for its ongoing vision and commitment to excellence as it presides over Kilvington. We are most fortunate to have such a talented group as Directors, chaired by the dynamic leadership of Prof Jayashri Kulkarni. As Semester One comes to an end, I thank all members of the community for their ongoing invaluable support and encouragement, and wish you an enjoyable holiday period. Annual Concert – Save the Date This year, Kilvington’s Annual Concert will be held on Friday 21 August at 7.30pm at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University, Clayton. This is a wonderful showcase of our Performing Arts program and amazing musical talent across the School. Tickets will be complimentary and will be available for booking via the Kilvington website in Term 3. Further information will be provided shortly. Staffing Congratulations to Mr Sebastian Earle who has been appointed to the role of Prep – Year 2 Coordinator. After twenty years of exemplary service as a piano teacher and accompanist, Ms Anne-Marie Quarrell has tendered her resignation. We thank Anne-Marie for her outstanding contribution to Kilvington’s Performing Arts program, and we wish her the very best for the future. Program Highlights Frilly May’s Musical Day

This week the Marine, Magnolia and Magenta children visited the Music School to listen to a performance by Carol (Sascha’s Mum – 3-year-old Marine Group), Ceri and Tania (Frilly May – the Lizard). It was called Frilly May’s Musical Day. The children were invited to twirl ribbons, played maracas, sing and dance. This was a fun interactive performance enjoyed by all.

Under the Gum Trees – Junior School Production Students in Years Prep to Four are immersed in rehearsals of our production of Under the Gum Trees. This original musical features many animals from the Australian bush and is centred on the story of The Muddle Headed Wombat. It has been a delight for us to introduce this classic story, written by Ruth Park in the early 1960s, to a new generation of young Australians. The students have laughed and enjoyed the story as if it was freshly written yesterday. They identify with Wombat’s innocent understanding of the world and his enjoyment of the simple things; a ‘new’ hat, a snail to eat and an old bear from the rubbish dump. The music is written especially for the age group of our young performers and they are singing it all around the corridors and probably at home too! Please come and share an enjoyable evening in the bush with us by booking your tickets now. There will be two performances - Wednesday 29 July and Thursday 30 July - held at Dalton Hall from 7.00pm. Prices are Adults $20.00, Children $10.00, Family $50.00 and Concession $10.00.

Music and the Performing Arts at Kilvington – The Semester in Review A feature of music and the performing arts at Kilvington is the abundance of performance opportunities offered to our students at all stages of their academic careers. Early in the year more than 200 students participated in performances at the Kilvington World Fair. Students performed at various junior and senior Soirees, at the Boorondara Eisteddfod, at the 6th Annual Royal Melbourne Hospital Live Music Is Good For You Schools Festival, as cast members in the School production of The Wiz, at Open Days, and at various assemblies in front of the School community and invited guests. I particularly want to congratulate the Year 7 Band Program students and the fledgling Concert Band Ensemble students for their performances at the Year 7 Band Concert and Winter Ensemble Soiree recently. These are new ensembles filled mostly by beginners who started this year. To hear both groups perform a repertoire of a few works was a testament to the persistence, discipline and teamwork that each student showed as an ensemble member and to the very competent direction of staff members Fiona Radcliffe and Ken McClimont. For the remainder of the year, students will be preparing for more assembly, Open Day and Soiree performances, as well as for competition at The Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia (Royal South Street), and performances at the Annual Concert and at Celebration Night at Robert Blackwood Hall. Some guitar students will be performing at a public concert held by the Victorian Guitar Society in September. Many students are also undertaking AMEB examinations in the second half of the year. I wish all students and their families an enjoyable holiday break and encourage students to continue with their practice routines. Sasha Stella, Academic Dean of Performing Arts

Scorpion Soccer Scorpion Soccer is a lunchtime competition open to all Years 7 - 12 students that has kept some of the students busy all term! Nine teams entered this season with 'The Dream' being the eventual winners, beating Miami Dolphins 4-1 in the final played on Tuesday. Quinn Kane of 'The Dream' finished with the Golden Boot award, scoring nine goals for the competition. Well done to all the students who participated. Steve Bustin, Academic Dean of PE and Health

Visual Arts Week Last week, we had our 2015 Visual Arts week. It was a week filled with a range of exciting art activities during lunch times from chalk murals and boomerang designs to fruit sculptures and large canvas artworks. A new activity this year was the ‘Selfie’ artwork. Students posed like the Mona Lisa and became the face of The Scream. During the same week, we had the Year 12 students take part in a permanent mural for the School environment. The mural reflected ‘Identity’ where each student produced a panel reflecting themselves. This work will bring great colour within the School grounds.

Our Community Kilvington to Welcome Japanese Students For two weeks in Term 3, Kilvington will again be hosting a group of Japanese students and teachers from Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior High School. The Japanese girls are 13 to 14 years old. They will come to school every day and spend time practising English, visiting the sights of Melbourne and mixing with Kilvington students. This will be a wonderful opportunity for families to host a student, learn about the Japanese culture and make a new friend.

For parents of senior school students, please consider parking or dropping them off from nearby streets to walk the short distance to School. Parents who are using the 25 minute parking areas to escort their children into primary school, please vacate the area once your child is safely dropped off.

Nut Allergies In order to minimise the risk of a student having an anaphylactic reaction at school caused by coming into contact with nuts, parents are asked to assist the School, wherever possible, by not allowing their child/ren to bring or eat nuts at school. A school can never claim to be nut free, however, in the interests of the safety of all community members and to minimise the risk to others, we do discourage the bringing and eating of nuts at school.

School Supervision Times The School is supervised from 8.00am-4.30pm (Senior School students) and 8.00am-6.00pm (Junior School students). After 3.50pm, Senior School students not involved in after school supervised activities are to go to the Library where they will be supervised from Tuesday to Friday. 5.30pm (Tuesday), 4.30pm (Wednesday and Thursday), 4.00pm (Friday). Junior School students not collected by 3.50pm will be taken to After School Care, where they will be supervised until 6.00pm (Monday to Friday). To ensure the safety of all students, parents are asked not to drop off their child/ren before 8.00am, or pick them up after the times designated above.
