The 27 students performed marvellously and movingly in theatres such as St Paul’s Actors Church Covent Garden in London and La Madeleine in Paris, with good audiences thoroughly enjoying their repertoire of sacred and secular music. I was fortunate enough to hear the students sing in Paris and was delighted that their many months of preparation and hard work had paid off with stunning performances. They did the School proud. I also congratulate students Eleanor Cook, Charlotte Corke, Stephanie Talbot and Lauren Rowley who participated in the dawn service at Villers-Bretonneux on ANZAC Day in front of a crowd of 4,500 people. This was a great honour for them and they performed admirably. The service was incredibly moving and one we will never forget. Ms Gall is to be congratulated for her vision, energy and hard work to enable this trip to take place. I also sincerely thank Rev. Janet Costello and Ms Ann-Marie Quarrell who offered brilliant support. Small enough to care, big enough to excel.

EISM Athletics Success Hearty congratulations to the students and staff involved in the EISM Athletics competition last week. Kilvington competed for the first time in Division Two with the boys coming a remarkable second and the girls an equally remarkable third. Overall the team came third which is an amazing result given this is only the beginning of our fourth year as a coeducational school. Special congratulations to Mr Bishop, Mr Bustin, Ms Burns, Ms Warburton, Mrs Kasapis and Head Coach, Mr Nick Bowden, for their commitment to the sport program. Middle School Centre of Excellence The new building continues to take shape and is progressing well. With the steady rain that fell in April, the project completion date may be delayed by a few weeks, with the new completion date being now around the middle of August. I thank you for your continued support and patience as the building works continue. Prep and Year 7 Enrolments The School is currently conducting interviews with families who wish to enrol their children for Prep in 2015 and Year 7 in 2016. Current families who are looking to enrol siblings will be given preference and are encouraged to complete an application form and submit it to the Registrar as soon as possible, if they have not previously done so. Road Works I also thank parents for their patience with the recent road works on the corner of Leila and Katandra Roads. These safety measures were initiated by the School for the benefit of all members of our community, and we are grateful to the Council for prioritising these works. We continue to lobby the Victorian Goverment to support the installation of a crossing at the corner of Grange and Leila Roads, which we consider an urgent need. Our local member, Mr David Southwick, has acknowledged my letter to him and has written to the Transport Minister asking him to take action. Skoolbag Application Kilvington is pleased to announce the availability of Skoolbag – a school to parent communication application. Skoolbag works via smartphones and smart devices (such as iPads and Android Tablets). You can access information including In the Know and School Calendar events. You can also activate alerts directly related to your child’s year level, or School-wide alerts. You control what you receive from the School. A web plug-in will be available on the Kilvington website from the week commencing 19 May which will get you started.

From the Deputy Principal Year 9 Explore Project Presentation Nights

On the 14 and 15 May, the Year 9 students presented their Explore Projects to an audience of their parents, staff and friends. The students had been working for six weeks on their focus area and contention. Students were in small groups in the following areas: • Sports and Leisure • Architecture and Heritage • Homelessness • Grafitti and Public Art

They had the choice of presenting their contention in the following formats:

• A written thesis (800-1000 words), including a persuasive speech (3 mins). • A written thesis (800-1000 words), including a model or diorama (min 40cm square). • A website, including a podcast (min 5 pages). • A video documentary (5 mins). • An oral presentation, including photo evidence (5 mins).

A significant amount of time was spent during the City Camp in research, filming, interviewing and organising of the projects. On each of the presentation nights, parents and staff were asked to be part of the formal assessment process. An assessment rubric was explained and distributed to parents as they sat together to hear/see each group’s presentation and then assess. This aspect was added to the Year 9 project this year to engage parents in the assessment process and give them a little taste of being a “teacher” for the night as well as to enrich the experience for students. The nights were a huge success with all actively involved in the process, and a wonderful range of presentations on show. The students completed work of a high quality and enjoyed the chance to involve their parents in this way. Thank you to John Knap, Year 9 Program Coordinator, and his team; Sandra Boutselis, Fiona Radford and Charmaine Irwin for their hard work and efforts in mentoring the Year 9s. Thanks also to the many parents and staff that attended. We look forward to these nights again with the next group of Year 9s. Teresa Deshon Deputy Principal

Curriculum Highlights Year 7 Cultural Afternoons Japanese Tea Ceremony

Mr Adam Wojcinski came to Kilvington to teach Year 7 students about the amazing art of the Japanese tea ceremony. He started by teaching the students to do a formal seating called seiza. After teaching us how to bow he continued on to show us what happens when you get invited to a tea ceremony and some interesting facts about samurai and some of the tea masters.

Did you know that one of the tea masters did not like the samurai bringing their swords into his tea hut so he made the door so small that they could not get through with their sword attached so they had to put it on the sword rack next to the entrance?

After teaching us about these interesting things he showed us how to perform a tea ceremony. He started off by picking a volunteer to complete the tea ceremony with him and by cleansing his hands before creating the tea. When he was making the tea he used a lot of precision for where everything was placed. He then gave the tea to his volunteer and she respectfully looked at it and then drank it.

Adam sensei handed out a Japanese sweet to everyone and then gave them some lovely tea. While we were eating and drinking he played a video of a 24 hour tea ceremony involving him and his master.

Zander von Steigler, Year 7

Les Bâtons Français Les Bâtons Français visited Kilvington to give the Year 7 students a taste of French culture. This program has been a crowd favourite for the last five years, performing to over 70,000 students in almost 5,000 school programs nationally.

Well versed in physical theatre and comedy, the show is designed to be fun and zany while also touching on many French icons and literature, including stories such as Cyrano De Bergerac and the Three Musketeers, as well as the farcical style of Moliere and much more. The Year 7 students were able to pick up some commonly used French words as well as get a better understanding

of the theatrical aspect of France. It was a great experience; fun and laughter was incorporated with cultural learning and understanding.

Athletics Going from Strength to Strength

The School has seen a strengthening in its sports program due to the introduction of highly qualified and dynamic coaches and mentors. The result was evident at the recent EISM Athletics Carnival.

Having been promoted to a very tight Division 2, with much larger schools, due to a strong performance last year, our expectations were low – around sixth would have been an achievement. However, it was a stunning result with the School coming third overall, the girls coming third, and impressively, the boys coming second. Since going co-ed, it is the first time the boys have pipped the girls!

Ben Bishop, Head of Sport

Preparing Our Future Coaches and Mentors The last two Fridays at Kilvington have seen the Year 10 students host a Tabloid Sports tournament for the Year 3 students, and students from the nearby Katandra School. As part of their assessment in PE for a Coaching unit, the Year 10 students were required to organise and be in charge of a station where the junior students had three minutes to test their fundamental motor skills and score points for their team.

The Year 10 ‘coaches’ showed excellent leadership skills, were extremely enthusiastic and encouraging, and ensured the junior participants had lots of fun and enjoyment. A very worthwhile and rewarding experience! Steve Bustin, Academic Dean of PE and Health

Co-curricular Highlights

Europe Choral Tour

On Sunday, 13 April 2014, 27 excited Kilvington students and three accompanying teachers set off on a trip to Europe to start our long awaited Europe Choral Tour. First stop was London. While there, we had the privilege of performing in three of London’s most beautiful venues, including the Old Royal Naval College, Hays Galleria and The Actors’ Church. We also had the opportunity to visit some well-known attractions, including the National History Museum, Greenwich Market, Hampton Court, Windsor Castle, Covent Garden and the West End, where we saw one of the most incredible musicals, ‘Matilda’. The second part of our trip was really exciting! France definitely lived up to our expectations, and the sights we saw were beautiful. Our favourite experiences of France were going to the top of the Eiffel Tower, eating delicious crepes and being able to attend an ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Villers-Bretonneux, starting at 4.30am! For us, the Europe Choral Tour was one of the most memorable trips ever! We made many new friends and learnt many life skills. We loved singing in the most spectacular venues and visiting different places in London and Paris. Everyone on the tour was so friendly, and we all got along very well, which is what made the tour all the more fun to be a part of. Our teachers, Ms Gall, Ms Costello and Ms Quarrell, took such great care of us, and we are very appreciative of their dedication and hard work. This trip felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we loved every minute of it. Ashwini Sakthiakumaran and Amanda Kretschmer, Year 11

Our Community Life

We Love Our Mums It was lovely to have so many mothers and special helpers come to our Prep Mother’s Day morning tea. We started with a creative craft activity in the Prep classrooms and then went onto The Green for a delicious treat and a play. Thank you to everyone for coming and celebrating this special occasion with us. We hope you all had a great time!

Year 11 and 12 Formal The Year 11 and 12 Formal will be held on Thursday 5 June from 7.00pm in The Ballroom at The International in Brighton. Tickets are now on sale. For further information, contact Karen Bryce, [email protected]. Host Japanese Students

For two weeks in Term 3, Kilvington will again be hosting a group of Japanese students and teachers

from Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior High School. The Japanese students are 13 to 14 years old. They will come to school every day and spend time

practising English, visiting the sights of Melbourne and mixing with Kilvington students. This will be a wonderful opportunity for families to host a student, learn about the Japanese culture and make a

new friend.

We are hoping to have as many students as possible hosted by families from Kilvington, so this opportunity is open to all students from Pre-Prep to Year 12. Some points worth noting: * The students do not have to have their own bedroom. * You do not have to cook Japanese food or speak Japanese. *The Group Coordinator provides families with cultural information and 24/7 support throughout the program. *A tax-free stipend of $30 per night will be provided to host families. If you are able to offer accommodation for a student or teacher from Saturday 26 July to Saturday 9 August, please express your interest by email or telephone AIIU Group Coordinator, Joy, 9576 7500, or email [email protected], or Regional Manager, Christine, at AIIU on 9798 4233 or 0418 742 641 email [email protected].

AIIU is an Australia-wide exchange student organisation operating for 25 years. We are a not for profit organisation, which organize cultural and educational exchanges. One of our principal objectives is to provide scholarships to Australian students to enjoy academic year studies in Japan. We are fully accredited with state education authorities. A Reminder…. Safety When Crossing Roads Please be aware that the Crossing Supervisor is stationed at the Leila Road pedestrian crossing from 8.00am to 8.45am. Students are expected to be in class by 8.25am (Senior School) and 8.40am (Junior School), however, if your child arrives at School after 8.45am, and are crossing the road, including the unsupervised crossing, they must take extra care. Students who catch the morning 625 bus that stops on the corner of Leila and Grange Roads are encouraged to get off closer to North Road, cross at the lights, and then walk up to school. All students who choose to cross at Grange Road must cross with extreme caution to ensure traffic is clear in both directions. The School is continuing to lobby both Council and VicRoads to have some traffic management measure installed near this intersection. Students who catch the train should cross at the school crossing in Leila Rd and cross Katandra Road close to the station (North Road end), where cars are looking out for pedestrians. When leaving school, students are encouraged to use the Lillimur and Leila Rd pedestrian crossings. Students walking east to Grange Road from the Dalton Hall side of Lillimur Road should use the Lillimur Road pedestrian crossing first and then walk to the intersection of Leila and Lillimur Roads and cross carefully. Parking Behind the Counselling Centre Some parents are parking behind the Counselling Centre on the corner of Lillimur and Leila Roads in the morning when they drop off their children. Please note that this is private property. The Counselling Centre has given permission for designated Kilvington staff only to park on their site every day except for Thursdays. If you wish to park and leave your car at drop off, please park in the parking available around the School and side streets.
