Year 9 at Kilvington

Year 9 is a critical juncture in a student’s educational journey. It is a time of rapid mental and physical development and desire for independence – a time where they look to parents, teachers and peers to help shape their attitudes, perspectives and character. The Year 9 Curriculum continues to prepare students as they move towards VCE studies, while also enabling them to develop critical skills and values for success beyond their academic pursuits. The Year 9 Curriculum comprises of:

• Core Subjects – all students study English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Physical Education and Sport. • Cultural Studies – students choose one year-long subject from French, Japanese or Global Studies. English as an

Additional Language is available to eligible students. • Future Focused Breadth Subjects – students choose four breadth subjects from eight options. These are

semester based and students complete two breadth subjects in each semester. • Change My World – students are immersed in the Change My World Program for one full day each week.

Change My World

All students participate in the Change My World program for one day each week. This innovative program is exclusive to Kilvington and exposes students to learning beyond the classroom. This takes place at various locations, including Monash University Clayton campus, Melbourne’s CBD and co-working spaces.

Kilvington has partnered with Monash University to create the first social enterprise program of its kind developed exclusively for Kilvington students - It’s Everyone’s Business. Over the course of Semester One, students ‘brainstorm’ at Monash University Clayton campus, Kilvington and City co-working spaces to help inspire the development of a real world business that addresses a social issue they are passionate about. They receive business coaching and mentoring from Monash University and Kilvington staff to build collaboration, communication, problem solving, critical and creative thinking, digital and financial literacy skills. Students then present their social enterprise at a ‘Shark Tank’ like expo at Monash University attended by students, staff and parents.

IT’S EVERYONE’S BUSINESS

In Semester Two, students complete the Agents of Change program. This exposes students to a range of powerful experiences leading to self-discovery and a deeper appreciation of the community and world in which they live. Students immerse themselves into community volunteering incorporating a strategic project, build prosthetic hands for landmine victims and develop empathy through wheelchair basketball and blind soccer.

AGENTS OF CHANGE

Health and Wellbeing are at the core of the Year 9 Impact Program. Relationships and responsible decision making are discussed, with a focus on what makes a healthy relationship and the pressures young people may experience. Students explore the importance of being emotionally and mentally healthy and how to manage stress and pressure. They are supported to develop a strong sense of self, build and maintain respectful relationships, and to promote positive mental health strategies. Students explore key topics such as Body Image and Sexual Health and complete a course in basic First Aid training.
