SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, Well, the 2016 school year has concluded in a flurry! Apart from the usual points of conclusion to the learning programs across the College, there are Assemblies, Eucharists and Graduation Dinners. Exams and 'Week 1 Year 12' are concluded, teachers are finalising their reports and the Immersion students in Fiji, Philippines and India return next week. Our cricketers are in Cairns for the Marist Cricket Carnival and our basketballers in Melbourne for the National Schools Championships. Last Thursday we held a function for friends of the Sacred Heart College Foundation and various committee members which included a tour of the new facilities on 'The Main Oval'. Their reaction to the tour ranged from 'gobsmacked' to 'amazing'! All will be in readiness for the 2017 school year which is a tribute to the teamwork which sits behind such a significant project. In recent weeks we have received news of the amalgamation of Marymount and Sacred Heart Colleges and the future development of the Mitchell Park campus. Finally, this is the season of Advent. It is a time of waiting, anticipation and great hope that the blessings of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, impact on each of our families. So, as easy as it is to be swept up in the frantic pace of the Christmas festivities, planning, shopping and so on; it is more important to take the time and space to allow these blessings to rest with us as we contemplate what has been, what is and what is to come. With this in mind please accept the invitation to attend a wonderful family event to share the Christmas spirit on Christmas Eve in the 'Quad' at Somerton Park - the Vigil Mass at 7.00pm (details follow).

“May you be blessed

With the spirit of the season, which is peace,

The gladness of the season, which is hope,

And the heart of the season, which is love.” Kind regards,

Steve Byrne

Are your family/student details up to date? To ensure that the College has current family contact details and relevant student medical history information, student update forms are sent out annually to the address where the student resides. These forms were sent out earlier this term. Thank you to the many families that have checked, updated and returned these forms in recent weeks. Could I remind parents/caregivers that have not completed these forms as yet, to please return outstanding forms to the College as soon as possible so our records can be updated accordingly in readiness for the new year. Virginia Miller Registrar

Parents & Friends Committee 2017 Are you a parent or caregiver of a student at Sacred Heart College and looking to be more involved? Here is the perfect opportunity! The Parents & Friends Committee (P&F) welcome parents/caregivers across Years 6 to 12. The P&F run four meetings a year and host various events. These include the Welcome Evening, Mother’s Day Mass, a shopping/movie night and Year 12 Parent Drinks. They also lend a hand at the Kilmore weekend every second year. We would particularly love to see some more males involved (not just for the lifting!). If you can spare one free night a term (yes, that is all that is required) and can come along and help out at some of the events (only four/five a year) then this could be what you are looking for. The meetings are generally held the second Wednesday of each term with the first meeting for next year being Wednesday, 8 February at 7.00pm in the Parlour at the Senior School. Please contact Chairperson Lynne Kurtzer at [email protected] if you are interested.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School It certainly has been an amazing and prosperous year, and is hard to believe that the end is near! There have been many highlights over the year and I would like to this opportunity to farewell four staff members. Farewells Jen Callanan Jen has been a very important and valued member of the Middle School staff for six years. She has been at the forefront in leading the school in faith formation and Religious Education in her role as APRIM. Jen has instilled in the boys a strong sense of social justice and the need to be people of action. This has been evidenced in her work around supporting local causes such as the Hutt Street Centre. I would like to thank Jen for her hard work and dedication to the community at Sacred Heart and sincerely wish her all the best as she begins a new chapter in her life. Chris Egan Chris has been a wonderful servant to our community in her role as Student Counsellor for 13 years. During this time she has nurtured the wellbeing of many students and their families, often helping them to navigate through very challenging times. Like Jen, Chris is about to begin a new chapter of her life and again I would like to thank her on behalf of the Middle School community for her commitment and dedication to her role. All the best into the future Chris. Heather Mansfield Heather has been a wonderful educator, especially in the area of Japanese for six years at the Middle School. Heather always brings energy and passion to her teaching and interactions with staff. Our loss is Nazareth's gain and I know that Heather will continue to develop and thrive as a teacher. I wish her all the best into the future and I am pleased she will get the opportunity to teach senior Japanese. Ian Hollingsworth Ian has been an important contributor to our grounds and maintenance team for almost nine years. The notion of doing good quietly sums up Ian and I would like to thank him for doing this so well. I wish him all the best as he begins the spoils of retirement. End of Year I would like to take this final opportunity to thank the families, staff and students of the Middle School. It has been another terrific year and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching our students grow and develop in every facet of school life. The staff in particular are always prepared "to go the extra mile" to support the boys in their care. I wish everyone a very happy, holy and safe Christmas and look forward to 2017 and all that it brings. Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Preparing through Advent to celebrate Christmas Advent is a time of promise, preparation, hope, expectation and participation. One of the principal themes in Matthews Gospel is the arrival of God's reign in the person of Jesus. Jesus shares this reign of love with his disciples whom he sends in to the world to proclaim the good news by word and deed. The Church today is sign of the reign of God through its preaching, liturgy and service. We are a sign of the reign of God in our world through our thoughts and action motivated by love. Every time we choose to be motivated by love we continue to bring to birth the reign of God in our midst. At Christmas we celebrate the incarnation, the Word made flesh, the coming of Jesus in our midst. God became human and lived amongst us. Advent is both a preparation for Christmas when the first coming of Jesus is recalled and the turning of minds and hearts to the expectation of Christ's second coming. Advent calls us to wake up to ourselves as Christians. It is a time to shake ourselves out of apathy, inertia, a sense of powerlessness, meaninglessness and of taking life for granted. It is about believing that with God with us, we can make a difference and reach out in to the darkness of war, poverty, ecological imbalance, violence and greed, and shape a different world. Advent invites us to prepare for Christmas by waking up and seeing with new eyes the signs of hope around us and to see traces of God in the events of our own lives. Some of these signs we experienced this morning, last night, and last week. I wish each of you the peace that is Christmas and every blessing as a new year unfolds. Jennifer Callanan

Supporting aid agencies across the world Year 6 students in classes 625 and 626 have been exploring the provision of Australian government or non-government aid to a country in the Asia and Pacific region or elsewhere in the world and analysing its effects on places in a specific country. Yesterday (Wednesday 7 December), they took action and raised a total of $261.40 for their chosen organisations so they can continue to provide life-saving services to those most vulnerable in Australia and around the world. Mercy Ships, Doctors without Borders, World Vision, Save the Children, International Red Cross, Caritas and UNHCR are just some of the organisations the students are supporting.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Senior School Staff Farewells 2016

We wish to acknowledge and farewell two members of staff who have made a long standing contribution to Sacred Heart College. John Kelly John Kelly is finishing an illustrious career in teaching at the end of this year. He began his teaching career in 1971 and has taught at Kostka Hall (Brighton, Victoria), St. Ignatius College (Athelstone), St. Ignatius College (Riverview, NSW), St. Aloysius College (Milson’s Point, NSW), Thomas More College (Salisbury), Immanuel College (Novar Gardens), St. Paul’s College (Gilles Plains) and Sacred Heart College. John has been teaching at Sacred Heart for the last 15 years. His major areas of teaching have been English, Classical Studies and Religious Education, but he has also taught Latin, French and History. We wish John all the best in his retirement, although we are happy to announce that he will be back from time to time to assist with editorial duties for our major publications and reports.

Daniel Head Daniel has had a long and valuable association with Sacred Heart College. He was a student (and student leader) from 2001-03 after which he studied law and was a successful commercial lawyer for a number of years. He won the Champagnat Christian Leadership Award as a Year 12 student in 2003. He worked as a tutor in the Boarding House when studying law, and returned to the Boarding House when he changed his career from law to education some years later (when he met his wife, Amelia Sharpley). He coached the Year 10A Football team for many years and has led the Year 11 students on Immersions for the past few years. Daniel’s first teaching position was at St Mary’s College (Adelaide) after which he won the position of Director of Marist Mission in January of 2013. He will be leaving us at the end of this year having accepted a Head of House position at Cabra College. We wish Daniel every success at Cabra College and with whatever lies ahead. Subject Enrolments and Timetables for 2017 and End of Year SACE Results Confirmation of Subject Enrolments and Timetables for 2017 Families of Year 10, 11 and 12 students enrolled at the College for 2017 will be emailed the confirmed list of subject enrolments for next year after the Promotions Panel convenes. Emails should be received by the week before Christmas at the latest - thank you for your patience. Timetables for 2017 will be emailed to students and families in the week prior to school starting on 31 January 2017. Year 11 and 12 students contemplating subject changes should do so before this time. To make changes, parents should email me at [email protected] prior to 23 January. The flexibility to make changes are somewhat diminished after timetables have been distributed. SACE End of Year Results SACE end of year results will be available for viewing online through Students Online from 8.30am on Tuesday 20 December. Year 12 students will be able to view their SACE results and their SATAC Tertiary Entrance Statement (i.e. ATAR, if eligible). Year 11 students will be able to view their SACE results to date (including scaled scores for any Stage 2 subjects, including Religion Studies, if applicable). Year 10 students will be able to see their PLP result and any other Stage 1 results if applicable (e.g. Languages). Stage 2 students should also receive their official documentation (including SACE Certificate and Record of Achievement) by post that same day. Students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address. Please email Mrs Deborah Hearl ([email protected]) by 2 December at the latest with the correct address if it is wrong. Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log on. The PIN is the first 4 digits of the student's birthday (e.g. 3 January would have PIN 0301). The PIN will be changed after the first log in and may have already changed if logged in previously. The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary. Students should log in well before results release day to confirm that their log in details and their personal details are correct. It may also be helpful for students to take some time to familiarise themselves with the pages they will view on results release day. A flyer, explaining how students can access their SACE results, and reset their PIN if they have forgotten it, has been emailed to all students previously. Students having trouble logging in on results release day can contact the SACE Support Team on 8372 7412 or email [email protected]. For more information about SACE results, visit the My results section on the SACE website. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching & Learning

Update to departure times of Bus Route 670 We have been advised by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) that Bus Route 670 will depart 5 minutes later from the commencement of 2017. This is in light of feedback that students often reached the relevant bus stop (either from Marymount, Brighton HS or Sacred Heart College) after this Bus had departed. All other details regarding Bus Route 670 remain unchanged. Daniel Lynch Head of Senior School

Marist Student Leaders' Gathering

Four of our elected 2017 leaders, including Luke Wormald, Gemma Thomas (College Captains), Georgia Harris and Austin Edwards (House Captains) ventured to Melbourne to attend the Marist Student Leaders' Gathering from 27–29 November. The theme for the camp was ‘Awaken’ and the students met and worked with fellow elected leaders from nine other Marist schools from SA, VIC and NT. The students explored what Marist Leadership means to them and how to bring the best to their leadership roles for 2017.

We congratulate the students on their outstanding efforts in representing the College at this event and look forward to 2017 with our leaders!

Volunteering for Variety

More than 3,000 children, carers and volunteers attended the Children's Variety Christmas Party at the Adelaide Showgrounds on 30 November, with Year 12 students from Sacred Heart College taking time out of their busy end of year schedules to support the event and volunteer on the day. Thank you to the kind staff, Cerys Howson and Pat Fooks for the setup, and to Catherine Whelan and Carol House for supervising the students on the actual day. Thank you also to the students from the Year 12 Gold Remar Caravel and other Year 12 students who generously contributed to this spectacular event, and to our Old Scholars who also gave up their time.

A personal thank you was received on Wednesday from Chair of the Variety Christmas Party, Rosalie Gillings, who thanked Sacred Heart College for dedication to the event. "We thank all volunteers who are all important in the delivery of the event but the students are critical to the success as they all work diligently on the set up day setting tables, placing settings on 270 tables and then the hard work of the 3000 chairs." "In the past we have had Year 10 students but this year I understand they had exams, so we had the pleasure of dedicated Year 12 students who had no other reason to be at school other than to support us. They are to be commended on supporting others." The date is locked in for next year already and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Variety.
