The celebration of Pentecost is our celebration. Each one of us here has a birthday. I hope that each year we celebrate that special day when we came forth into this world. Today, we celebrate the official birth of ourselves as God’s Church, God’s family, the people of God, the Body of Christ, the Temple of the Holy Spirit, and as a parish. Today, we are asked to remember who we are, where we have come from, and where we are going. We are gathered here today because 2000 years ago, there was another gathering; and at that gathering the Holy Spirit came and, in an extraordinary way, brought men and women together in oneness that the world had never seen. Different languages and different cultural backgrounds no longer divided people. All heard the good news of the works of God in their own language. We must not allow differences of opinions and viewpoints to disturb the gratitude we should have on this occasion. In fact, the very existence of differences of opinion about how things should be done, really only point to our strength as a Church. It is only in alive and growing communities that differences are allowed to exist. For example, in countries where there is very little freedom, you are not allowed to think differently. Any real difference of opinion is seen as a threat to the government of such a country. If our Church was one in which every person had to think and feel the same way, it would be nothing but dead institution. One of the outstanding strengths of the Catholic Church has been her ability to embrace peoples from all over the world. It is true that we have had dark moments in our history when intolerance of others’ beliefs has led to persecution. But, thankfully, those times were short-lived. In fact, last year, our Holy Father publicly asked forgiveness of any sins we may have committed against others. That is wonderful sign of our health. The ability to see ourselves as we are, and to accept the consequences of that seeing, point to our ability to survive even our mistakes. And all of this is because we are God’s people, and ultimately submit ourselves in obedience to being led by the Holy Spirit. And so my wish is, that our celebration today marked primarily by thankfulness. It is only by the grace of God that we have been called to be witness to the world, and to each other, of the meaning of life, and the goodness of God. But birthdays are also, at times, marked by looking to the future. We sometimes take a closer look at ourselves on our birthdays, and begin to see where we would like to direct our lives in the coming year. As the Church in this particular time and space, may we have the wisdom and the courage to see where we can become stronger witnesses to the love of God. We do this through our prayer and our open dialogue with one another. If the Spirit of God is moving you to become more involved with our faith community, or is leading you in some special service, we all pray that you may respond generously to such a call. In the meantime, may the Lord bless us as we continue to bring the message of mercy and kindness to all those with whom we live and work. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life!

Thank you for your generous support of the parish, our diocese and the global Catholic Church. May God bless you!

Early Registration for the 2016-17 Faith Formation year, which includes sacramental preparation, is currently underway. If you wish to enroll children for First Communion or Confirmation, please note that it is a two-year program for either sacrament. If your child attended Faith Formation here at Holy Spirit, and were considered first year, don’t forget to re-register! If a child attended another parish last year, a letter from the previous parish must be provided prior to enrollment in our sacramental preparation program. First Communion is celebrated in the 2

nd Grade (first year being 1

st Grade) and

Confirmation in the 8th Grade (first year being 7

th Grade),

according to diocesan policy. Please feel free to contact Deborah Pearson x14, Devyn Buschow x16, Lisa Estrada x12 or Lindee Greer x43 in the Faith Formation office, if you have any questions.

Parents, just a gentle reminder that faith formation of your child/youth does not end with the reception of the Sacraments. Their faith is just beginning to become alive and active, as they continue to receive the weekly gift of the Eucharist and/or utilize the gifts of the Holy Spirit sealed at Confirmation. Let us continue, together, to do all we can to teach your children the wonder of our faith!

Information and paperwork regarding infant Baptism (ages 6 years-old and under) may be directed to Lisa Estrada, x12. Our next baptismal preparation class for parents and godparents is not until Saturday, June 11, 9:00 a.m.—12:30 p.m. Completed paperwork is due two weeks before the scheduled class date, Friday, June 3.

Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers: Please Email Deacon Paul: [email protected] with your name, mass time preference, and ministry position so that he can update our new Liturgical Ministry Scheduler software.

We hope to finalize the database in May, so it can be used starting in June. Thank you to all who serve now and in the future!

Congratulations to Joan Wehman for winning the Quilt Raffle! Thank you for everyone who has supported the youth with this raffle, especially the Piecemakers for donating the beautiful quilt! Our next Young Adult meeting is TOMORROW, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. It is open to anyone, single or married, ages 18-30! Email [email protected] for more information. Thank you for everyone who helped pack all the meals at our Kids Against Hunger meal packing event! And if that little voice in the back of your head starts yelling at you to join our children’s team, listen to it! We are always looking for adults with willing hearts and hands to help out. Acts of Mercy Project: We are asking

our parishioners to help us celebrate the

Jubilee Year of Mercy. Let’s start with

the Corporal Works of Mercy and reflect on

one per week and offer examples of ways

we can help our family, friends and

community.

This week’s Corporal Work of Mercy is:

Feed the Hungry. On the surface, feeding

the hungry seems fairly straightforward.

We can help the hungry in simple ways. Some examples

are: making donations to the North Texas Food Bank or our

parish food pantry. If we have the time we can help at a

local soup kitchen for the homeless. We could take food to a

sick neighbor or to a family that has just welcomed a new

baby. You might want to contact our Community Life office

and ask if they need help with the next funeral luncheon.

Write these acts of mercy that you or your family perform on

a piece of paper or on the forms we’ve provided and slip into

the Acts of Mercy box on table in the Narthex. Let’s see

what we can do to show mercy to others.

For Those Seeking Annulments

The annulment process through the Catholic Church is best explained in person by trained procurator advocates. Procurator advocates are trained by the Diocese of Dallas Tribunal and are appointed by the Bishop of Dallas. They are bound to confidentiality when working with a client. However, some information packets are available from our Adult & Family Ministry Office that give an overview of the process. if you wish to know more about the process prior to meeting with one of our trained procurator advocates.

If you are interested in knowing more about what is involved in annulment process, please contact Veronica Houston,x26.

Your divorce must be final prior to beginning an annulment process. There are a number of documents that need to be gathered to process an annulment. The procurator advocate will go over that list with you.

If you wish to have a procurator advocate assigned to you that is not connected to Holy Spirit, please contact the Diocese of Dallas Tribunal.

Visit www.cathdal.org for more information about the annulment process under the Office of the Tribunal.

Annual Parish Picnic (Pentecost Sunday): Our Annual Parish Picnic is THIS SUNDAY and starts at 12:30 p.m. COME JOIN THE FUN! See today’s bulletin insert for more information!

Hawaiian Falls Day: Save the Date! Our 2nd Annual Holy Spirit Day at Hawaiian Falls will be Saturday, July 30. More info to come on purchasing tickets.

[The Church must] constantly go out from herself, keeping her mission focused on Jesus Christ, and her commitment to the poor. God save us from a worldly Church with superficial spiritual and pastoral trappings! This stifling worldliness can only be heald by breathing in the pure air of the Holy Spirit who frees us from self-centeredness cloaked in an outward religiousity bereft of God. Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of the Gospel - Evangelii Gaudium, 97
