From the Pastor’s Desk

St. Anthony of Padua, High Ridge, MO

Pentecost literally means 50th. It is a feast celebrated on the 50th day after the Passover feast by the Jews and a feast celebrated on the 50th day after the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus by the Christians. The Jewish Pentecost was originally a post-harvest thanksgiving feast. Later it was celebrated to remember God’s Covenants with Noah after the Deluge and with Moses at Mt. Sinai.

The event: On the day of Pentecost 1) The Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and Blessed Virgin Mary as fiery tongues. 2) The frightened apostles were transformed into fiery preachers and evangelizers by a special anointing of the Holy Spirit. 3) The audience experi-enced a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit with the gift of tongues, hearing Peter speaking in their languages. 4) The early Christians became powerful witnesses and brave martyrs for faith.

The role of the Holy Spirit in Christian life: 1) As an indwelling God, He makes us His Living Tem-ples (I Cor 3:16). 2) As a strengthening God, He strengthens us in our fight against temptations and in our mission of bearing witness to Christ by transparent Christian lives. 3) As a sanctifying God, He makes us holy through the sacraments: a) He makes us children of God and heirs of heaven through Baptism. b) He makes us temples of God, warriors and defenders of faith, through Confirmation. c) He enables us to be reconciled to God by pardoning our sins through Reconciliation. d) He gives us spiritual nourishment via the Holy Eucharist by converting bread and wine into Jesus’ body and blood through Epiclesis. 4) As a teaching and guiding God, He clarifies and constantly reminds us of Christ’s teachings. 5) As a listening and talking God, He listens to our prayers and enables us to pray, and He speaks to us mainly through the Bible. 6) As a giver of gifts, He gives us His gifts, fruits and charisms.

Life messages: We need to permit the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives:

1) By constantly remembering His holy presence and behaving well.

2) By praying for His daily anointing so that we may fight against our temptations and control our evil tendencies, evil habits and addictions.

3) By asking His daily assistance to pray, listening to God through meditative Bible reading and talking to Him.

4) By asking the help of the Holy Spirit to do good for others and to be reconciled to God and oth-ers every day.

Dear Friends, Thank you so much for my birthday wishes and gifts. Thank you, Fr. Sebastian

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. This pro-gram is designed for children ages three through eight (third grade). Children’s Lit-urgy of the Word brings the Gospel to the chil-dren at their level of understanding. Through appropriately adapted Scripture texts, music, prayer, and activities that reinforce the Gospel message, the children have an opportunity to celebrate their faith in a way that is joyful and relevant to their own young lives. The children are escorted out of mass by the program cate-chists after the Opening Prayer and return to mass during the Preparation of Gifts. For more information, contact Kathy Joslin at 636-677-1567 or [email protected].

Parish Council News

We hope the word has spread that we are having a Car Show in June. This is a parish event, with the supervision of the council members. We need volunteers to help in several different ways, so if someone on the council calls and asks for your help, we hope you will be available to join in the effort. There will be designated parking for vendors and volunteers, and customers for the event. Signs will be made to point people in the right direction, and parking lots that are usable, close to church, will be listed in the bulletin, closer to the date of the show. Remember, there is also the Craft/ Vendor Fair going on inside. Thank you to all the members of our parish organizations who donated a trophy for their spe-cial car choice, and/or a basket to be raffled at the event. Details regarding the Car Show are coming together, and we are looking forward to a success-ful fund raiser for our church. The council is also hoping to have some information in the near future about organizing some parish social gatherings, such as a BBQ. Suggestions would be considered. Parish involvement is the goal. Let’s come together to meet new people, and to stay connected with the familiar. Sincerely, St. Anthony Parish Council

Glennon Sunday

Archbishop Robert Carlson is chairman of the an-

nual Glennon Sunday appeal, supporting the pa-

tients and families at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon

Children's Hospital.

SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is the only free-

standing Catholic pediatric hospital in the country,

serving more 200,000 sick and injured children

each year, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

In the early 1950’s generous Catholics in our com-

munity raised more than $6.2 million to build the

hospital – marking the beginning of Glennon Sun-

day.

Once again we call on the Catholic community of

(Insert Parish Name) to partner with us as we con-

tinue in this health care ministry by making a dona-

tion to help the sick children and families in this

community. Your gifts will be collected at Mass for

Glennon Sunday weekend, June 3-4,

"Where Faith and Healing Unite”. On behalf of the

many children and families who will benefit from

your gifts, thank you for your continued prayers for

Cardinal Glennon kids. You can also make your gift

online at glennon.org.

Prayer for Protection During Tornado Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The season of tornadoes is upon us. These tornadoes invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this tornado season we turn to You. O loving Father, spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin Mary, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us.

Amen.
