Spirit of 4-H and Club of the Year

Each club can select one 4-H’er to receive the Spirit of 4-H Awards. In 100 words or less tell us what the selected 4-H’er does to represent the true spirit of 4-H. They will be judged on creativity, originality and how your club has participated in citizenship, leadership and communication activities. Some of the project areas include: Food & Nutrition, Communications, Dog, Sheep, Horticulture, Personal Development, Visual Art and Home Improvement. The project fair will be held in the morning hours and more details along with location will be in the next 4-H Scene.

OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH AND ADULTS LEARN, GROW, AND WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSTIVE CHANGE

Food Safety Workshop for 4-H Leaders | March 21

Does your club have a fundraiser involving a meal? Do you have members serve treats at your meeting? Do you have cooking presentations during your meeting? Do you want to learn more about how to have a safe meeting – food wise? If you answer yes to any of these questions, this work-shop will help you! Renee Sweers, Iowa State & Outreach Nutrition & Health Program Specialist, will be presenting a workshop on Food Safety to 4-H Leaders. The Workshop will be held on Thursday, March 21, at the Woodbury County Extension Office. At 6:00 p.m. there will be a light meal and the workshop will be from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Each 4-H Club will receive a bag of supplies to help with food safety for your club meetings. Please email Lujean Faber at [email protected] or call 712-276-2157 to reserve your attendance at the workshop.

Shooting Sports Training

Shooting Sports training will be held on April 5 – 7 at the Iowa 4-H Camping Center. Interested participants must be enrolled in 4-H Online and go through a background check before the SESS training. This is a great opportunity for adults to learn about a shooting sports discipline and help to enrich the lives of young people. We currently have equipment and a location for air rifle and archery. We would love to build our shooting sports club and offer more courses and events for our Woodbury 4-H’ers. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an Instructor please contact Laura Johnson or Adrienne Jansen at the Woodbury County Extension Office, 712-276-2157, for more information!

4-H Leaders Workshop | April 11

The spring 4-H Leaders Workshop is a required work shop for all 4-H Volunteers who work with youth. It will be held on Thursday April 11 at the Seargant Bluff Methodist Church (1st & Baker Street). Please join us at 6:00 p.m. for a light supper, with the workshop lasting from 6:30 p.m. –8:00 p.m. The training will be on Experimental Learning: Do – Reflect - Apply. Volunteers will learn the basic principles of the Experiential Learning model, and participate in a fun hands-on learning experience they can replicate in their clubs. E-Mail Lujean at [email protected] or call 276-2157 to sign up for this leaders workshop. There are a few leaders that still need to do make-up sessions for last spring training and the training we had in the fall on risk management. It is important and required that you attend or go on-line to complete the training. Contact Lujean for information on how to get these training completed.

OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH AND ADULTS LEARN, GROW, AND WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSTIVE CHANGE

4-H Livestock Show Requirements

Many 4-H’ers enroll in projects that involve animals. 4-H’ers can share what they have learned by their involvement in animal projects in a number of ways. Many choose to share at a fair. 4-H’ers choosing to exhibit animals must meet uniform state 4-H regulations as outlined in the 4-H 202 Iowa 4-H Livestock Show Requirements. These guidelines apply to county, state and interstate shows. This publication tells 4-H’ers how many animals may be identified, important deadlines and if an animal needs to have a retinal scan or DNA. Families can download their own copy at the Iowa 4-H Livestock Page located at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock - look for 4-H 202 – State ID Requirements. While you are at that site see the 2013 State Fair changes.

4-H members must identify their livestock projects in 4-H Online for the Woodbury County Fair. This will replace the May 15 paper form that was turned in. Forms may be requested for families who do not have internet access by calling our office at 712-726-2157. Animals that must be Identified in 4-H Online are: Breeding Heifers, Feeder Calf, Cow/Calf, Dairy Cat-tle, Dairy Goats, Horse, Dog, Swine and Llamas. Woodbury County 4-H does not require 4-H’ers to identify Poultry, Rabbit or Small Pets for county fair. Market livestock which includes Market Steers, Market Heifers, Market Sheep and Pig-of-Merit Swine that attended their county weigh in do not have to be entered. Animals must be in 4-H Online by 11:59 pm on May 15. 4-H’ers who still want to fill out paper ID forms can also request those forms BEFORE May 15, OR you can download your own forms by going to the Iowa 4-H Livestock page at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock - just click on one of the animals listed and an ID form can be found on that animal webpage (except for llamas – those 4-H’ers will have to ID in 4-H Online or request a county ID form). Cow/Calf and Feeder Calf can use the Beef Breeding ID form or go into 4-H Online.

NEW in 2013| County Livestock ID’s now on 4honline

4-H’ers planning to exhibit animals at the Iowa State Fair MUST identify their animals in 4-H Online by11:59 pm on May 15. 4-H members may do that by going to: https://iowa.4honline.com/ Animals that need to be ID’ed in 4-H Online for State Fair include: Dog, Horse, Dairy Cattle, Feed-er Calf, Dairy Goats, Breeding Beef (Market Beef have already been entered), Sheep and Swine. Sheep, Swine & Meat Goats that are tagged for state fair will first be entered by Extension Staff. Then the 4-H’er will need to verify. Exception is small pets & poultry which does not required to be identified. Rabbits must be ID’ed by July 1 for state fair. Horses MUST include a picture of the animals showing all 4 sides of the animal. State Fair Swine must have a special DNA punch tag that can be requested from the Extension Office. State Fair Market Beef, Market & Commercial Lamb, Meat Goats are required to come to a county tag-ging date – those animals will be entered by staff and then verified by the 4-H Member.

4-H Hot Sheets

Want to find out what you can do in a project area? Do you want to learn about the different projects you could take to the fair? What are leadership, citizenship and communication ideas that can help you in your project award appli-cation or goal forms? What websites can help you with additional information about your project? You can find all that information on each project area on the Iowa 4-H website.

Check out the Iowa 4-H Hot Sheets on the 4-H website at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4-h-project-hot-sheets

4honline News & Updates Anytime a 4-H family has a change in address, phone number and email it is important to send your updated infor-mation to the Woodbury County Extension office. For families to enroll in 4-H, enter livestock, sign up for state fair and enroll in other 4-H events in 4-H Online – it is very important to have a current email and an email that families look at often. With more and more 4-H information being sent via email, it’s important that 4-H families check their email. Please send your email changes to Lujean Faber at [email protected].

Continue to go into 4-H Online :https://iowa.4honline.com/

4-H Families will need to go online to ID animals for State Fair, verify market animals and sometimes event register for events like State Fair. If you haven’t already gone into 4-H Online to verify the liability clause for your fami-ly. It is important you do that NOW! There are quite a few 4-H member who are still pending – you need to sub-mit payment as soon as possible to the Woodbury County Extension office. There are a handful of 4-H’ers who cre-ated a new profile – but shouldn’t have because they were already in 4-H last year. That takes extra staff time to straighten that out. Whenever you have questions about 4-H Online please don’t hesitate to call the Woodbury County Extension Office at 712-276-2157.

4-H Poultry Information

Mike and Michael Beavers have accepted the positions as 2013 Woodbury County Fair Poultry Superintendents along with Jared Schramm. You may call the Poultry Superintendents with any questions at (712) 944-5140. The superintendents remind you that this is the time to select your Poultry entries whether you are purchasing them or you raise them yourself. ALL entries MUST be pullorum-typhoid free. If you purchase from a pullorum free breeder, they can give you a verification certificate - be sure to ask (no individual scraps of paper or receipts will be accepted at fair time)! You MUST show your certificates to show at the fair. We hope to have a testing day in the future. Keep watching your 4-H Scene for information. All poultry are healthier and show better if they are mite and lice free, be sure to be aware of your bird's condition and treat accordingly - spray/dip are available at the various pet stores. Poultry have certain standards to meet such as type, sex, color, size etc. We encourage you to enjoy reading about and studying your bird types. We also encourage you to participate in showmanship. You will perform well IF you know what you are showing! The judges love to listen to 4H'ers tell the story of their entries! For more information on 4-H Poultry go to the Iowa 4-H website at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/poultry, or check out the standard of Poultry book at the Extension Office. Mike and Michael Beaver feel that "questions are the answer". If you have any questions, please check the Fairbook for your answers. If you cannot find the answer there, you can always give them a call.

When children are happy they heal and recover faster. The Pediatric floor only has a Cube gaming system and Xbox gaming system on wheels and only a few games. They also have a portable DVD player. You don't even have to be a 4-H member to attend! The Woodbury 4-H County Council has made it their goal to get kids to this event.

Cost is approximately $130 (extra $30 to stay at dorms on June 24). Youth who are enrolled in Woodbury County 4-H will not have to pay for bus transportation, but it will be on a first come first serve basis. Adult chaperones are needed and all costs will be paid by Woodbury 4-H for chaperones to attend. More information will be in future issues of the 4-H Scene or check out the website at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa4hyouthconference

They have worked so hard and ask for your help in voting for their project that the team has submitted to Global Innovations. Here is the link to VOTE for our "Trip No More" project submission. Please share the link with your friends and family, we need all the votes we can get. Here's the link: http://fllinnovationaward.firstlegoleague.org/trip-no-more You can vote as often as you would like, so visit often.
