Camps
Ron Webb in his new role of Careers Coordinator took a group of Year 12s to Wollongong University on the 1st and 2nd February. The students get to experience university life first hand, attend lectures and hopefully reduce the uncertainty and fear of tertiary education away from home. Stu-dents certainly enjoyed their time and came back very positive and motivated. (More on page 2.)
The Year 12 Study Camp went ahead last Sunday to Tuesday at Valley Homestead and was very well organ-ised. As usual, study skills, goal setting and learning to extend them-selves and support each other were central elements of the camp.
We are looking at potentially chang-ing dates to a different time of the year and will be surveying staff, stu-dents and parents on this matter.
The Year 7 Orientation Camp was held last Wednesday to Friday at Howman’s Gap and was also very well organised. Students work close-ly in groups and the key concepts are getting to know each other and their teachers, and seeing just how much they can achieve if they push them-selves.
A letter outlining costs, arrange-ments etc. has recently gone out to parents asking for deposits for the Year 10 Melbourne Urban Experi-ence. There is also opportunity for fundraising to reduce the overall cost of this camp.
Swimming sports
The school Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday. The number of students turning up in house colours was very encouraging. The day was going to be very hot and teachers were on duty to ensure students remained Sun Smart. Participation levels were high, and Power House emerged victorious.
Wollongong University - A Great Experience
On Monday 1st of February 12 motivated and excited
Rutherglen High School boarded a bus (along with 16
Wodonga Senior Secondary College) destined for
sunny Wollongong.
The purpose of the trip was for students to have a taste of
University life as well as participate in a number of ses-
sions.
Sunny Wollongong proved not to be so sunny so a walk to
the beach when we first arrived was not possible however
students did not seem too fussed about that. Instead some
students utilised the games room while others organised
themselves on a campus tour run by some of the current
Wollongong students.
The next day was the student sessions. Students had or-
ganised themselves online into various sessions they were
interested in. Some of these included multimedia, Science,
the Arts, Engineering and Philosophy just to name a few.
Students also got to do some general information sessions
including what courses Wollongong University offers,
where university degrees can take students, accommoda-
tion at Wollongong and what university life is like. Overall
the students found these sessions to be informative and
interesting.
The Wollongong University experience was a great oppor-
tunity for Rutherglen students to experience university life
as well as start the process of considering possible career
options and university courses which may be suited to
those careers. Overall this camp was a really positive
experience for our students and we would like to thank
Wollongong for giving our students this opportunity.

Year 9 2016
Our Year 9 students have started the year very positively . They have all returned with a very keen and willing attitude, which is fantastic to see. As you know, Year 9 at Rutherglen High School is full of opportunities for the students to extend themselves. All Year 9 students have started working towards their core project and have signed up for a Community Service. Some have even started their Com-munity Service already! We have had the Bogong School visit us for a whole day of activities, and the students conducted themselves extremely well. It is shaping up to be a very busy year for our Year 9 students. Keep up the great work!

Year 10 Urban Experience Camp, Melbourne
All Year 10 students will have received two of the four Information letters regarding this Camp. The 4-day Urban Experience forms an important part of your child’s Level
10 program, so it is hoped that all students will attend. The $100 deposit will need to be paid by Friday 4th March please. We expect to be able to keep the total cost of
the Camp at $500 (less any fundraising that your child will be given the opportunity to participate in). This covers all booked activities, (including the International live
stageshow, ‘The Sound of Music’), accommodation, bus travel and most meals. You are most welcome to pay for the Camp in instalments. Please read the information
letters carefully, and if you have any queries or concerns, please contact Year 10 Coordinator, Peter Jakober, via the General Office.
Year 11 Literature class meet Rosalie Ham . .
Author Rosalie Ham was one of the guest speakers at the recent opening of the new and refur-
bished Mulwala Public Library. Our Year 11 Literature class, who are currently studying one of
Rosalie’s novels, ‘The Dressmaker’, took full advantage of having Rosalie so close to home.
The class attended the Library opening, listened to Rosalie’s wise (and oft amusing) words, chatted at
length with her (Rosalie is also a teacher, thus made a clear bee-line for the uniformed girls to chat
with them about their studies), and of course asked Rosalie to autograph their personal copies of ‘The
Dressmaker’, as well as our Library copy.
Rosalie’s talk was refreshing and down-to-earth; her deep love of reading and writing tangible and
infectious. She spoke passionately of library ‘spaces’, the crucial role they play in our communities,
and the importance of retaining the traditional whilst embracing modern technologies.
The girls were extremely appreciative to have the opportunity to meet Rosalie, and there was much
enthusiastic reflection during the debrief, including the desire to read Rosalie’s ‘other’, not-so-famous-
as-the-dressmaker, novels! . .

Year 7 School Immunisation Immunisation day is fast approaching for our
Year 7 students. Rutherglen High School im-
munisation will be conducted on Thursday
10th March. As a parent there are some im-
portant things you can do to make the experi-
ence not quite as daunting for your child.
These include:
Discussing how important and lifesaving
immunisations are, and that severe
allergic reactions are extremely
rare.
Ensuring your child has a healthy break-
fast on the day. A substantial
breakfast will be digested slowly,
providing sustained energy and
also allowing your child to think
clearly and rationally. Examples
would be eggs on wholemeal
toast, muesli and yogurt, pancakes
and fruit, toasted wholegrain sand-
wich, fruit smoothie with yogurt.
Even if your child does not normally
eat breakfast this is a really im-
portant part of a positive immunisa-
tion experience.
Helping your child to stay hydrated-
send a water bottle to school with
them. The needle is only tiny but
being inserted to a well hydrated
plump arm is going to ensure only a
tiny sting.
If your child is nervous encourage them
to go first- delaying the immunisa-
tion can result in increased anxiety
Discussing with your child what they can
do to distract themselves whilst
waiting- listen to music, play com-
puter games, read etc
Remind your child that if they feel un-
well- tell the immunisation staff-
they are specifically trained to
monitor and look after your child. It
is normal to have a small amount
of pain, redness or swelling at the
injection site, this is nothing to be
concerned about.
Yours sincerely, Linda Elkington

Year 8 Science
Mrs Naughtin’s Year 8 Science classes have
been busy learning about all the systems of
the body.
Last week the two classes conducted a
chicken wing dissection to learn more about
bones, joints, ligaments and muscles.
In three weeks’ time, the students will par-
ticipate in a pig’s heart dissection to gain a
better understanding of the anatomy of the
heart.

well as staff, for attending our Welcome

commitments, but it was a good ‘roll up’
nonetheless, and clearly enjoyed by those in
attendance. Thanks to Megan & Pete Scott
