CITROEN’S move upmarketis gaining momentumwith the introduction of anew family hatchbackaimed at the mature
motorist.The latest C4 has plenty of big car
features giving it loads of appeal forthose thinking of downsizing.
It’s on sale in January withprices ranging from £15,595 for a1.4-litre petrol version in VTR trimto £21,495 for a high specificationExclusive model powered by a2.0-litre diesel.
That’s slightly higher than theoutgoing range but the new modelshave moved up a league in terms ofspecification, power andperformance.
In line with Citroen’s currentstyle offensive which has alreadyseen the C5 saloon, C3 superminiand super-swish DS3 set newstandards for the brand, the C4 issmart, stylish but most importantlyaccommodating.
A good sized boot of 408 litres hasa wide opening which means longobjects can be fitted easily andmaximum capacity with the rearseats folded is 1,183 litres – almostestate car proportions.
Room inside is generous and theC4 seats four with ease thanks to ahigh roof line, although Citroen’swide louvered grille gives the caran illusion of being quite squat.
The design of theinstrumentation with most controlssurrounded by brightwork ismodern and contemporary whilethe soft touch trim creates a qualityfeel.
In the instrument binnacle thedials are backlit and the colour canbe changed through several shadesof blue.
On higher grade models differentpolyphonic sounds can be selectedfor the indicator click and warningalerts – but some of the mobilephone like tones may not be toeveryone’s taste.
The engine line up features 1.4and 1.6-litre petrol engines and 1.6and 2.0-litre diesels with poweroutputs ranging from 95bhp to155bhp.
All versions are economical. Thepetrol models will average morethan 40 to the gallon while thediesels are capable of breaking the60mpg mark.
An eco eHDi model fitted withstop/start technology, brake
energy regeneration and lowrolling resistance tyres has a
tax friendly CO2 rating ofjust 109g/km and will
average around 67mpg.It is priced from£19,695 and
available in mid-range VTR+ trimor £21,095 in Exclusive finish butthe higher grade car with its larger17-inch wheels is not quite aseconomical at 64.2mpg.
The eHDi C4 is powered by a110bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine matedto a six speed semi-automaticelectronic gearbox.
On the road the C4 has no realbad habits.
The variable power steering hasnice feedback and the ride smoothenough to handle our poorlysurfaced roads.
Top speed is a claimed 118mphwith 0 to 60 taking around 11seconds but there is plenty ofmid-range pull.
The latest C4 no longer has thestatic hub steering wheel which wasa feature of the previous model butthe wheel itself is festooned with
controls for the radio and cruisecontrol.
The Exclusive model is wellequipped and luxurious with thelikes of dual zone climate control,leather upholstery and footwelllights as standard. Extras includesat nav, a panoramic sunroof andmetallic paint which combinedwould add £1,700 to the price.
Nevertheless the C4 Exclusive isa quality car fitted out almost to thesame level as an executive saloon.
It’s available only as a five doormaking it well placed for the50-somethings Citroen is targetingwith the C4.
Those who crave a sportierversion will have to wait a fewmonths when Citroen will belaunching a DS4 with addedfeatures akin to those already seenon the smaller DS3.

BOLDNESS and daring maynot always have beenwords associated withJaguar’s flagship modelthe XJ – but things haven’t
half changed.The big cat’s design director Ian
Callum has never been afraid topush barriers to their outer limitsand, like the XF sports saloonbefore it, the new XJ is a stunningpiece of automotive styling.
Imagine a black panther ready topounce on its prey and you have theelegant, fluid lines of this luxurymotor car, by some distance themost visually stunning XJ yet.
Jaguar’s philosophy remains oneof creating beautiful fast cars, butit’s one thing building a model thatlooks sporty and sophisticated,quite another maintaining thelevels of space and practicalityexpected by premium buyers.
Not only does the XJ deliver –with a few small exceptions – on
space, it’s also a car that’s a delightto drive and easy to live with.
The all-aluminium body is 11 percent stiffer than its predecessor andextremely light, making it bothagile and economical.
Sensible folk go for the 3.0-litreV6 diesel, an engine already provenin the XF, which offers some seriouspunch yet can return 40 miles pergallon and CO2 emissions of184g/km – making it tax efficientfor business users.
As a driver’s car the XJ is a joy –the six-speed automatictransmission is operated via a
simple rotary selector and thepassengers can lap up a magiccarpet ride as the Jag slipssmoothly through the gears.
Switch from Normal to Sport andengage Dynamic mode and thesuspension firms up while thesteering and throttle responses aresharpened, making for a farsportier experience.
What’s also endearing about theXJ is that for all its flair and cuttingedge style it retains a Britishnessyou don’t get with the Jaguar’sprincipal rivals, like German triothe Audi A8, BMW 7 Series andMercedes S-Class.
Sophistication is also the name ofthe game here. There’s state of theart equipment on every car, fromsoft leather upholstery and veneersto contrasting piano black andchrome highlights.
And while upgraded Portfoliotrim cost appreciably more than thestandard Luxury trim, it does
include some amazing kit.Best bit is the Dual-View function
that allows the driver and front seatpassenger to see different images onthe same central 8-inch screen.
There’s also a whopping 1,200watt, 20-speaker Bowers andWilkins sound system that broughtme flashbacks of standing next to
the stage at a Who concert.While rear comfort is fabulous,
things can be awkward for a centrepassenger, whose position isperched and legs have to straddlethe wide transmission tunnel. Andthe boot, while long andaccommodating, has a lobster pottype entrance.

Patriot flies the diesel flagJEEP is ramping up the value of itsmedium-size SUV the Patriot with apowerful new engine, improved fueleconomy, greater torque and upgradedtrim.
The American icon’s current 2.0 dieselVolkswagen powerplant has just beenreplaced with a 163bhp 2.2-litre CRDengine sourced from Mercedes-Benz, a
unit offering a wider spread of torquefrom lower RPM
Jeep says the new engine, which boastsadvanced common-rail technology withturbocharging, will bring a 23bhpincrease in power combined with animprovement in fuel efficiency to anaverage 42.8mpg. CO2 emissions arealso down.
The more powerful engine increasesthe vehicle’s maximum speed from117mph to 125mph and reduces the0-62mph acceleration time to 10.7seconds, but also underpins the JeepPatriot’s position as a serious towingvehicle.
Diesel-powered cars will be available in2.2 CRD Sport, Sport +, Limited and
Overland versions, entry grade nowoffering the likes of body coloured doorhandles, Hill Start Assist, leatherwrapped handbrake and ‘active’ headrestraints.
Prices are from £14,995 for the 2.4Sport petrol rising to £21,995 for the 2.2CRD Overland.
