MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Anglican School AustraliaI was most fortunate to attend the annual Anglican Schools Australia Conference last week, along with our Chaplain, Father Noel Oakey, and our Chair of School Council, Mrs Judy Sparkes. The conference was held in Hobart and, yes, it was cold! However, the warmth of the collegiality and the inspiration from some outstanding presenters far out-weighed the icy physical conditions, with the conference truly living up to its title – Awe and Wonder!

I would like to draw your attention to two presentations in particular.

Firstly, that of the Rev. Dr Daniel Heischman who spoke to a paper (which he had been commissioned to write for Anglican Schools Australia) entitled: Enhancing our Anglican Identity. While the paper gives us a clear vision of what it means to be an Anglican School, it was written with the view that it is the start of this important conversation. The original version appears in full in the April ASA Newsletter and can be read on pp 6 – 9atwww.anglicanschoolsaustralia.edu.au→Clickheretoenterwebsite→News→Newsletters→April2019.

The second presentation which may be of interest to you was given by the social researcher, author and media commentator, Claire Madden. Her insights into The Wellbeing of Gen Z were so helpful in understanding the complexities of a generation growing up in a world which is changing faster than the world has ever changed before.

On returning to Western Australia on Sunday, I went on to Claire Madden’s website thinking I would like to order her book, Hello Gen Z – Engaging the Generation of Post-Millennials.Iwasnotsurprisedtofinditwassoldout!Fortunately,thenoticeonthewebsiteassured me that ‘the revised edition is coming soon’. MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents Term 3 at school could be called be the ‘crutches’ term.

Across the School students hobble on crutches as a result of falls in a variety of recreational and competitive sports. (There are also the slings carrying broken arms, shoulders.)

Crutches are not always the easiest things to master. Especially when you have to also negotiate taking your classroom supplies with you. But students manage. With help from friends some get quite speedy moving from class to class and it’s probably only Periods 7 and 8, when students are tiring, that it takes them longer.

AcrutchhasoftenbeentheimagerygiventoChristianityoranyreligioncometothinkofit.‘Youneed a crutch to lean on, so that’s why you pray and you believe,’ can be the sort of taunt Christians and other religious groups receive.

What seems to be forgotten is that belief and faith, while maybe being seen as a crutch when people are struggling through life, becomes a lifestyle ... a lifestyle of service and love. So the crutches are removed when healing takes place and the restored Christian becomes the crutch, the helper, for others.

Labelling often takes place through ignorance or fear of the change that a particular faith or perspective might have on one’s life.

That fear and ignorance cost Jesus His life but gave us the promise of resurrection in our own lives, after the need for crutches.

God Bless

Father Noel OakeySchool Chaplain

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers On Monday, we will have the biannual dress-up parade for Book Week. Students from Pre-Primary toYear6areinvitedtodressupastheirfavouritebook character. We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s costume choices, and students participating in activities highlighting reading across the week. The theme for 2019 is ‘Reading is My Secret Power’. Kindergarten students will have their parade on Wednesday 21 August.

CommunicationThe world in which we live now enables communication to be almost instant, both in the sending and receiving of electronic communications. This can be of great convenience, but it can also add to the pressures

of our lives for both the sender and the receiver. This week in our staff meeting, we were engaged in professional reading and in discussing staff well-being and how we manage the demands of our profession. One area that has increased over time is access for parents to teachers through email and platforms such as Seesaw. These are both very positive forms of communication thathavegrownintheSchooloverrecentyears, andstafffindthemeffectivemeansofcommunication; however, sometimes expectations can get out of kilter with what is realistic and achievable for a teacher with a full class of students in terms of response times. During business hours and generally across the week, staff try to reply to emails in a timely manner and to add posts on Seesaw so that your window into classroom learning is regular. However, there are times when an email is received in the evening during the working week, late on a Friday or over a weekend where I would not expect staff to be checking their email account or replying outside of business hours. Instead, I have encouraged staff to be having quality time with their own families and friends. This is crucial to their sense of wellbeing and that of their families. I feel strongly that we all need downtime from our workplace to recharge and refuel. Teaching is undoubtedly one of the professions where personal well-being is particularly important as studies show it to be one of the most stressful occupations. The staff members of our Primary School are dedicated and committed people who want only the best for our learners, so in writing this I am hoping to evoke thoughtful consideration, in the community, around these communications.

Student ExpectationsThis term, we are focusing on self-management by encouraging students to be aware of wearing their uniform with pride and meeting expectations in different situations without needing to be reminded. These include waiting correctly in the mornings before the classroom doors are opened, not using the play equipment before and after school, lining up after breaks in an orderly manner and being respectful during Chapel services and assemblies. Self-discipline is essential and something that is developed over time in all our learners with guidance from the adults in their life. Generally, the students respond well to what is required, and we will continue to encourage themtoworkontheseimportantaspectsoftheirdevelopment.Yoursupportinmanagingthebefore and after school expectations is appreciated.

Pick-up and Drop-offI am asking everyone who drops off or collects children from the Meadow Springs Primary campus to use the correct carparks and be considerate of others by not lining up in the roadway when accessingKiss&Drop.Generally, trafficflowcanworkwell, aswesawforaconsiderabletimein the last term, if we all work together. A friendly reminder, students are not to be dropped or collectedfromtheLongStaycarparkortheStaffcarparknearYear4andYear6.Ithankyouinanticipation of your support in this matter.

Dear Parents We are now well underway with the routine of school after the mid-yearholidaybreak.Fourweekshaveflownby,andalreadywe have had many things happening in the Primary School. This included our Photo Day held yesterday, and it was great to see all the students looking smart in their uniforms for their class and individual photos.

Book WeekWe are looking forward to seeing all the students dressed up astheir‘bookfirst’characteronMondaymorning.Wewillbe holding a parade in the Undercover Area from 8.35am forallthePre-PrimarytoYear6studentstoseeeachother’scostumes. Parents are most welcome to come and view this. The Kindergarten Parade will occur on Wednesday morning.

Mental Health This week in the Primary School during our after-school staff meetings, we have had a focus on student and staff well-being. On Tuesday afternoon, the staff met to discuss teacher well-being and brainstormed how we as teachers, can ensure we are maintaining a healthy mental state. Through discussing teacher well-being, we are all realising that to have a healthy school and to lead a successful classroom; the teacher needs to be feeling happy and mentally healthy. It is then that the teacher can have the best opportunity of having a positive impact on the students in their care.

Wednesday afternoon saw the Pastoral Care Committee meet to continue discussions around staff and student well-being. One of the major talking points related to how we can offer support to those students who are experiencing mental health problems. This has been an ongoing theme through our sessions this year. As we discussed this we looked into some online therapy resources that could be of help not only for young people suffering from anxiety or mental health issues but also resources available for parents to best support their children.

One of these is called BRAVE. There are two programs available from BRAVE with one of these aiming to help children aged 3 to 7 who are experiencing anxiety or who are showing signs of becoming anxious. The program is completed by parents. More information can be found at http://www.brave-online.com/new-brave-for-young-children-parent-program/.

The other program is called BRAVE-ONLINE. This evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program is available online to help children aged 8 to 12 cope with anxiety. Sessions are available for both children and parents to complete. For further information visit: http://www.brave-online.com/

The last online resource we discussed was Child 360, a new, free app developed from Emerging Minds. This app provides practical tools and a pathway for parents to help identify and manage the mental health needs of their children. This app draws on evidence-based practices. More information can be found at https://emergingminds.com.au/resources/child360app/

An opportunity now exists for some of our Frederick Irwin students to visit our local Amana Living site, Meadow Springs Retirement Village. Dear Parents Athletics Carnivals This year our Athletics Carnivals will again be combined, with students from both the Halls Head and Meadow Springs campuses.ThePre-PrimarytoYear2CarnivalwillbeheldonThursday29August.TheYear3to6CarnivalwillbeheldonFriday13 September and our Kindergarten students will also attend this event and participate in some activities at the beginning of the day. Kindergarten students will then spend time with the Meadow Springs Kindergarten students, eat lunch together and then take the bus back to Halls Head. More detailed information will be coming out shortly and I know that both carnivals will be enjoyable experiences. I also know that Wendy Shepherd will be looking for parent helpers for these events.

Founders’ Day Founders’ Day will be held on Wednesday 18 September in Week 9. All students will be leaving the school at 9:00am and we will travel to the Meadow Springs campus. The day will involve a service and wonderful activities for the students. Last year had a wonderful atmosphere and I know that this year will be no exception. Parents are invited to spend lunch with their children at 12:00pm and stay for the activities. Students will then return to the Halls Head campus and arrive at 3:00pm. Detailed information on the day will be sent home soon and I’ve very excited to participate in this community event. Opportunities to come together as a Frederick Irwin community are truly special.

Book Week This year’s Book Week theme is “Reading is My Secret Power”. Students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book and to bring the book to School as part of the parade. The parade will be held on Tuesday20Augustat8:45amintheHall.ParentsarewelcometoremainfortheparadeandIlookforwardto a week of celebrating reading and promoting a love of literature.

Service LearningI have been having conversations with Amana Living to discuss opportunities to connect with the elderly incommunityresidentialcarecentres.AmandaLivingisoneofWA’slargestnon-for-profitprovidersofcare and services for older people. We would like to make a connection at Wearne House in Mandurah. Connecting with our community is an important initiative and I’m excited about the possibilities and experiences for our students.

Be YouI often speak to parents about developing agency within children and promoting an intrinsic motivation to learn. As a school our pedagogy is student centred and we prioritise opportunities for students to have a voice and take ownership of their learning. We honour relationships and value opportunities for students to share their views. We teach students resiliency, as we understand that this assists them in developing agency.BelowisanexcerptfromBeYou,amentalwellbeingframeworkthatguidesourwellbeingpractices.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Tips and advice on helping your child have safe and enjoyable experiences onlineThe eSafety Commissioner has a downloadable guide for parents and carers on all of the big issues. This is a great starting point if you need some help and there are more links to resources for parents on the website - https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/online-safety-guide

Your child’s first smartphone – are they old enough? This is a big question for many parents – when is your child old enough to be given their own mobile phone? There might be many reasons for considering giving your child a smartphone, but how can you keep them safe once they have their own device?

There is some helpful information on the eSafety website that may assist you in making a decision – https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/skills-advice/are-they-old-enough

Dry Cleaning your BlazerThe purpose of this article is to provide some guidance and advice relating to the safe laundering and dry cleaning of your Frederick Irwin School Blazer. Thefirstruleisthatblazersshouldneverbehome-laundered.Treatyourblazerlikeanysuitingjacket–whichis dry clean only. Just like a suit, blazers have high quality fabric (containing wool) together with fusing and lining which must be professionally cleaned. A quality dry cleaner should be used where possible. The above said, there are some dry cleaners that do not always dry clean in accordance with garment specifications.Theprimarycomplaintaboutdrycleaningisover-heating.Whenablazerisover-heated,the fusing (used to make collars and the lapel maintain shape) will come away from the fabric and result in bubbles, a wave pattern or bulging. An experienced dry cleaner will know this and can prevent this from happening. Frederick Irwin’s blazer manufacturer recommends using a larger-scale dry cleaner rather than small shopping centre-based dry cleaners. Larger volume dry cleaners tend to be more professional and have experience with special garments. If you are in any doubt, do not be afraid to ask questions about the dry cleaner’s practices and knowledge. Sound dry cleaning practices will ensure your blazer will last longer.

Lost UniformsCan you all please check your children’s uniforms for names, if the item is not yours, please return it to the SchoolOfficeassoonaspossible, whereweareabletogivetheitemtothecorrectchild, ifyouknowthechild please pass it on to the owner.

Recently, I have had several parents into the Uniform Shop, complaining about lost/taken uniform items.

Please be mindful that all items of clothing MUST have your child’s name on it, this will not only reduce the risk of lost items, which result in additional costs for families but items can easily be returned.

Second hand UniformsHaveyouanyuniformsthatnolongerfit,re-sellthemthroughthemthroughtheUniformShop.Itemsthatarelaundered and in good condition, I would like to assess them to possibly include in our second hand section.

Forms are available from either the Uniform Shop, Reception or online – details needed:• Name and address – so payment can be deducted from your school fees – once items are sold• Date purchased – this will help set the selling price

The selling price is set at 60% of the original price, and then you received 75% of this selling price.

A new system has been developed to help me process the 2nd hand uniforms into the shop and sell on for you. Unfortunately, any item that has been taken in cannot be returned if either unsuitable or unsold.

STUDY TIPS

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR AUGUST: THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY SLEEP FOR STUDENTS

Sleep is crucial not just for physical and mental well-being, but for the consolidation of learning, and to ensureyouperforminallyourendeavoursinpeakcondition.Theabsolutelastresortshouldbetosacrificesleep time in order to get things done.

How much sleep is right for you? This is tricky as everyone is different. Some lucky people need only six hours a night, most people need about eight hours and some people need 10 hours!

Two ways to tell if you are getting enough sleep:

• How quickly do you fall asleep at night? If you fall asleep instantly that can be a sign you are not getting enough sleep, it should take 10-15 minutes to fall asleep.

• How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? If you feel tired and sluggish then that can also be a sign that you need to get to bed earlier.

IMPROVINGTHEQUALITYOFYOURSLEEP:

• Avoid caffeine (cola drinks, coffee, energy drinks, chocolate) after dinner or even better, no later than 4pm.

• Organise as much as you can at night to minimise what you have to do in the morning (e.g. organise your clothes for the next day, pack your bag).

• Try and have a half hour to an hour before you go to bed without computers, TV, phone or any electronic devices or homework or chatting to friends. If you can’t do that, at least put the devices on night mode or turn the brightness down.

• Set up a relaxing ‘wind-down’ routine for before you go to bed. Do this same routine every night (e.g. warm shower, reading, listening to quiet music) so your brain associates these activities with bed time and sleep.

• A drop in body temperature near bedtime triggers the sense that it is time to go to sleep. So after a warm bath or hot shower, cool yourself down. It is also better at night to be cool rather than overheated.

• Keep your room as dark and as quiet as possible at night. • When you lie in bed, start at your feet and mentally imagine relaxing each muscle as you slowly work

your way up the body. Most people do not make it up to their head before they fall asleep!• In the morning open the curtains wide or go out into the sun and get lots of light to help wake your

brain. Being exposed to lots of natural light during the day will also help the body produce the melatonin at the right time for a good sleep cycle.

• A healthy breakfast will help to kick-start your body clock for the day.
