MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Term 1 was a very successful and enjoyable term that concluded with Easter services across both Primary campuses and the Secondary School. The services were led by Father Noel and our Chapel Prefect, Elizabeth Rugendyke. Elizabeth spoke very much from the heart about what Easter means to her and her family. Her address to the students is included later in this newsletter and I commend it to you.

During the holidays, Father Noel, Mrs Helen Oakey and Mrs Megan Crane accompanied 17 of our Secondary students on the annual Walkabout pilgrimage to Cambodia. It was wonderful to read their daily blogs and hear about the amazing experience that they all shared together. I look forward to catching up with the students over the coming days and hearing more about their journey. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Father Noel for all the hard work that he puts into organising the pilgrimage and for ensuring that all the pilgrims returned home safely.

And so to Term 2! It has come around so quickly. It is hard to believe that it is already May and, in nine weeks, we’ll be half way through the year!

The Anglican Schools Commission annual Christian Purposes Day for staff on Monday was, once again, a positive experience and a wonderful way to start the term. The keynote speaker was Saroo Brierley. His life story was portrayed in the Academy Award winning movie, ‘Lion’, which many of you may have seen. It is certainly a story that shows the rewards of perseverance and never giving up. The day was also an opportunity for collegiality for staff across the Western Australia ASC schools.

With students returning on Wednesday, the School is again abuzz with their energy and we all look forward to a productive term.

Staff We welcome the following staff members to Frederick Irwin (some new to us and some returning once again to help us out while staff are on leave):

• Mrs Sarah Burtenshaw (Administration – Meadow Springs Primary) • Mr David Case (Mathematics - Secondary) • Mrs Holly de Jonge (English and Christian Studies – Secondary)

We welcome back from Long Service Leave:

• Mr Nathanael Carmody (Humanities and Social Sciences) • Mrs Gueh Su (Japanese)• Mrs Kerrie Taylor (Year 5 /Learning Enrichment – Halls Head Primary)

Thank you to staff who are taking on extra responsibilities in various positions this term:

• Mrs Anne Crock : Acting Deputy Principal – Secondary • Mr Israel Carmody : Acting Head of Arnold House • Mrs Jade Telford : Acting Assistant Head of Arnold House

Congratulations to Ms Sophie Rowland (Performing Arts Department) who was married over the holiday! We welcome her back as Mrs Sophie Trent.

Congratulations also to Ms Brooke van Aalen (again from the Performing Arts Department) who has been elected President of DramaWest; the Association of Drama Educators in Western Australia.

ANZAC ServicesA warm ‘thank you’ to Frederick Irwin students and staff who represented the School at ANZAC Day services across the Peel region. Our School ANZAC services for both Primary Schools and the Secondary School will be held this Friday. Lest we forget!

Finally, I would like to wish Ms Kerry Robertson, our Principal, a very restful and relaxing Long Service Leave this term and may I also take this opportunity to thank all of the students, staff and parents in anticipation of their support in my new role for this term. I am very much looking forward to a busy but exciting Term 2!

Kind regards

Andrew Pennycott Acting Principal

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents2019 Walkabout CambodiaWalkabout Cambodia took place during the holidays and involved students from Frederick Irwin Anglican School, Peter Carnley Anglican Community School and John Wollaston AnglicanCommunitySchool.Thisisthefirsttimethatwehaveinvited other schools to join us in this venture and it proved to be very successful. ThegrouplandedinSiemReaponthefirstSundayoftheholidays and experienced not Just Angkor Wat but also the Khmer New Year celebrations and a 90 minute jungle walk. On the road to Phnom Penh, pilgrims entertained up and close encounters with tarantulas…including eating them. The teaching of English to students was exhausting and rewarding with students working through days of 38 degrees heat and no fans (cyclic power shut downs). Cultural trips were also included with visits to the Killing Fields, S21, Russian and Night markets and the Royal Palace. Two debrief and cultural days ended the pilgrimage….where it rained!

Many thanks to Mrs Megan Crane for her leadership and support on the trip.2020 Walkabout is up and running….but if you are a late starter, you could still be part of a great adventure. We are leaving the opportunity open until June 20. Contact Fr. Noel on Direct Message.

God Bless Father Noel Oakey School Chaplain

EASTER ADDRESS

AstheChapelPrefect,I’vebeenaskedtoreflectonthemeaningonEasterandtoshareanaspectofthatwith you. I must admit, it was quite a daunting topic, because of the enormity of things I could have talked about. The events that changed the world, shaping the society that we live in today. Easter is a great celebration for all of us in Australia, it provides an excuse to eat chocolate, have a public holiday, visit family... but this isn’t a commonplace occurrence, usually such activities are related to a momentous event like a birthday, a wedding, a birth or even a death. And the truth of the matter is that, that is exactly why we have Easter. It is a commemoration of the death of Jesus on Good Friday, the celebrationofHisresurrectiononEasterSunday, thefulfilmentofapromise, acelebrationofthehopethatwe have through the gift of salvation that is offered to us. All of this resulting from Jesus’s ultimate act of love, hissacrifice. Most of us would have heard John 3:16 before ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that whosoever believes in Him would have eternal life.’ Some would call it a cliché; however, this verse describes the essence of our faith to a tee. I want to draw your attention to that beginning phrase, ‘For God so loved…’ in particular.Loveisoneofthemostoverusedwordstoday, andIdefinitelyamaculpritofthat…Ilovemyfriends, myfamily and my dog. I love music, autumn, and going with the Easter theme, yes, I love chocolate too. But how can the love that I have for chocolate be compared with the love that I have for my brother. It can’t.Greater still, how can the love that God has for us be compared to anything that we know? A love so great that it led to the death of Jesus, to give us life. The Greeks called this agape love; divine love… self-sacrificinglove.I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be able to give up my life willingly. Can you imagine loving someone or something so incredibly much that you would die in their place, that youwouldsacrificeyourselfforthem…That’stheextenttowhichGodlovesus. But the question is why would He do that? Weareallsinners, andsinhasacostandthatcostisdeath.Asbrokenpeoplewecannotfixourselvesandso we needed saving. So, Jesus, in all his power and splendor, became fully human, yet still fully God. He walked among us, took on our sin and died in our place. He died a physical death and a spiritual death, so that we don’t have to, so that we didn’t need to be separated from God. He loves us so much that he wants to spend eternity with him, but also have a relationship with us now. ThroughJesus’ssacrifice,Heprovidedawayforthistohappen. So, to conclude, my Easter could be considered to be pretty stock-standard, we go to church, have hot crossbunsformorningtea,havelunchwithfriendsorfamily…Butwhatthatdaysignifiesisfarfromordinary.Itakesometimetorecognisethegreatsacrificeandactoflovetaken,thegiftthatIhavebeenofferedandchosentoreceive.So,thisEasterIencourageyoutoreflectonthesacrificesandactsoflovethatyouhavereceived,andespeciallyonthegreatestactoflovegiventomankind,thesacrificeofJesusChrist.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome to Term 2. I hope everyone had a restful break and was able to take advantage of the warm autumn weather in the second week. Term 2 once again promises to be a busy time with many events and activities planned across Primary. Following the two and three-way conferences held at the end of Term 1, I trust the students have new goals set and targets to reach as they engage in their learning over the coming term. Families who were unable to attend a conference at that time will be contacted by their child’s teacher to arrange an appointment.

Last week, I attended the ANZAC Day service at the RAAFA Estate with four Primary House Captains. They wereinvolvedinraisingtheflagsandlayingawreath. These students made a valuable contribution to this service which was held for residents, many of whom

cannot attend the main service at the war memorial. I thank these captains for volunteering their time during the holidays as I know it meant a lot to the elderly residents.

Next week, we will be hosting a professional learning event for educators from other schools and education sectors. The participants will be given the opportunity to observe how our students engage in their learning and have a chance to view our learning environments.

In Week 3 and Week 4, the students from Pre-primary to Year 2 will attend swimming lessons at MARC. These lessons are part of the Physical Education programme and students are expected to attend.

OverTerm2and3,wewillbechangingourmorningroutinefromdailyfitnessactivitiestoreading.OnMonday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings the students will be able to read within their blocks. Parents and other family members are invited to remain and read with or to, their child and others. This time is designed as a calm start to the day where we can share books of interest and stories. Students may read alone, with friends or be read to. Favourite books can be brought from home and shared, or books can be chosen from within the classrooms. As with Daily Fitness, at 8.45am the students will return to their own classrooms to begin their learning for the day.

Kind regards

Sue Skehan Head of Primary - Meadow Springs

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents ANZAC ServicesOver the holidays we had four House Captains represent Frederick Irwin at the annual RAAFA Estate AnzacService.Thecaptainshadspecialrolestofillasflagbearersandwreathlayers.Theyfulfilledtheirresponsibilities so well and should feel proud of the service they provided for the residents of the RAAFA Estate. I want to thank these captains and their family members who were in attendance, for giving time out of their holidays to attend this special occasion.

It was also with pleasure that we welcomed some RAAFA Estate residents at our Primary School ANZAC Service this morning in the Undercover Area. We also had the pleasure of Mr Brien Bush from the City of Mandurah RSL join us and talk to the students about ANZAC Day. It is so important for our students to hear the messages that returned servicemen and women can give us as we go about our everyday lives. Thank you to all parents and community members who attended this morning’s service.

Winter UniformAs always, we thank parents for their support in helping us to maintain our high standards of uniform presentation at Frederick Irwin Anglican School. It has been wonderful to see students returning in Term 2 looking smart and well-presented in their winter uniforms. Next week, I will be conducting uniform inspections across the Primary School. I will be particularly focusing on:

• That boys in Years 3-6 who choose to wear the winter shorts have their socks pulled up to just below their knees at all times

• That girls in Years 3-6 who choose to wear white socks, also have their socks pulled up to just below their knees at all times

• Earrings: Girls to wear only plain, silver or gold studs or sleepers• Boys’ Hair: hairstyles need to be conservative. Please note that boys’ hair should not be excessively

layered, and the contrast between the shorter layer and the longer upper part should be kept to a minimum.” Tracks in the hair are also not permitted.

Thank you for your continued support around uniform matters.

Pre-Primary to Year 2 Swimming LessonsDuring Term 1 our Year 3-6 students enjoyed swimming lessons at Doddi’s Beach. It was an absolute pleasure of mine to be able to witness some of these lessons and to see students stepping out of their comfort zone to swim in the ocean. Living in Australia, being surrounded by coast, it is wonderful to see the students having an opportunity to learn the important skill of swimming in open water. Thanks to the parents and teachers of our Year 3 to Year 6 students during the swimming lessons as while it is a rich experience, I recognise how the school and home routine does change during swimming lessons.

This term our Pre-Primary to Year 2 students will participate in their swimming lessons at the MARC during Weeks 3 and 4. We wish the students all the best for this period as it is certainly a time where our younger students have an opportunity to develop their organisational skills, emotional regulation, resilience and courage. Thank you in advance to the parents and teachers for their support of our younger students during this fortnight of swimming.

Be YouOver this year, I have provided some information through this forum to families and community members around our involvement with ‘Be You’. ‘Be You’ carries on the previous work of KidsMatter and is focused on the mental health and well-being of students in schools and early learning services. In Term 1, our staff met to focus on student mental health and well-being and tools we can use to recognise student issues and, most importantly, what we can do to support them.

Ourworkinthisfieldwillcontinuethistermwhenwemeettoconductmoreprofessionallearningaround ‘noticing’ and ‘providing support’ for those students whose mental health and well-being may be suffering. We also have a dedicated Pastoral Care Committee in our Primary School. This voluntary committee made up of teachers, education assistants and leaders within the Primary School meet once a term to explore how to best support the students in our care whose mental health may not be the best. I want to take this opportunity to thank the participants on this committee who bring such enthusiasm and passion to each meeting.

If you have any questions regarding our involvement with ‘Be You’, or anything regarding our Pastoral Care approach within the Primary School, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with me.

Kind regards

Glyn Teape Deputy Head of Primary - Meadow Springs

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

Dear Parents I would like to welcome everyone back to school and hope that all of you had an opportunity to spend time with family. I certainly appreciated the time with my own loved ones.

As always, I spent the morning in the classes welcoming students back and speaking to them about the upcoming term. Sue Kirke and I spoke with students about effort and the need to persevere, as well as personal goal setting and having the courage to try new things. I also spoke about how we treat each other and the need to treat others the way we enjoy being treated. I am looking forward to the term and supporting our students.

Year 5 Camp Last Term I visited the Year 5 students at Point Walter and was very impressed not only with the way that they were challenging themselves at camp, but also how they were supporting each other. I would like to thank Mrs Kirke and Mr Grice for all of their organisation and effort and Mr Myhill for attending the camp and giving up his time to support our students. It was great to see our students forming friendships with students from the other campus and the smiles on everyone’s faces reinforced to me the value of this camp experience.

Reporting Reports will be available digitally at the end of Term 2 and information will be sent home as to how parents can access them on Seqta Engage. Upon receiving this information, I encourage all parents to attempt to login.Thiswillallowadequatetimetocontacttheofficeifyouexperienceanydifficulties.

Book Fair This year’s Book Fair is going to be held in the Halls Head library on Monday 13 May through to Friday 17 May from 9:30am-4:00pm. Students can access the Book Fair during lunchtime or after school. There will be some craft activities for students and a large range of books for purchase. There will also be a story reading session on Tuesday 14 May after school. I love the opportunity to read to our students.

Bring your Parents to School I’m happy to announce that we will be holding our ‘Bring your Parents to School’ afternoon on Tuesday 18 June (Week 8).

The afternoon will take place from 3:10pm to 5:45pm and will be an opportunity for your children to give you a tour of their learning experiences at school. Students and families can visit our classrooms and view workbooks, as well as visiting specialist teaching areas to see how the students learn. We hope to provide opportunities for parents to be involved in these experiences and the afternoon will also include a choir performance and sausage sizzle. The choir will be performing in the Hall at 4:30pm. I hope that everyone has an opportunity to attend this community event and look forward to the day.

UniformAsweareinTerm2,WinterUniformisnowbeingworn.Thefirstweekbackisalwaysatransitiontime,inwhich students have time to organise their uniform. Full Winter Uniform will be expected by the start of week 2. As always, I appreciate everyone’s support of our uniform policy.

Community Reading I felt that it was prudent to give another reminder that Community Reading will commence this term and runonTuesday,WednesdayandThursday.Thereadingsessionsbeginat8:30amandfinishat8:45am.Itisawonderful opportunity for our parents to come and read to our students in the classroom. We also welcome grandparents and other family members, but ask that anyone, other than a parent, who wants to regularly participate, presenttheirWorkingwithChildrenChecktotheoffice.

Animal Lovers I would just like to politely remind everyone that dogs and other animals are not permitted on the school grounds. I am certainly an animal lover and have a lovely border collie at home, which my family adores. However, as it is School policy, I ask that you adhere to this and appreciate your support.

Kind regards

BLAZERS Blazers are a compulsory item of the winter uniform for all students from Years 7 to 12.

DRY CLEANING YOUR BLAZER The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance and advice relating to the safe laundering and dry cleaning of your Frederick Irwin School Blazer. Thefirstruleisthatblazersshouldneverbehome-laundered.Treatyourblazerlikeanysuitingjacket–whichis dry clean only. Just like a suit, blazers have high quality fabric (containing wool) together with fusing and lining which must be professionally cleaned. A quality dry cleaner should be used where possible. The above said, there are some dry cleaners that do not always dry clean in accordance with garment specifications.Theprimarycomplaintaboutdrycleaningisover-heating.Whenablazerisover-heated,the fusing (used to make collars and the lapel maintain shape) will come away from the fabric and result in bubbles, a wave pattern or bulging. An experienced dry cleaner will know this and can prevent this from happening. Frederick Irwin’s blazer manufacturer recommends using a larger-scale dry cleaner rather than small shopping center-based dry cleaners. Larger volume dry cleaners tend to have experience with special garments. If you are in any doubt, do not be afraid to ask questions about the dry cleaner’s practices and knowledge. Sound dry cleaning practices will ensure your blazer will last longer.

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR MAY: BARRIERS TO DEVELOPING A GOOD MEMORY

Many students say ‘I don’t have a good memory’ but there are many barriers to developing a good memory that are able to be overcome. Here are the top 3:

1. NEGATIVE MINDSET / ATTITUDE Henry Ford once famously said, “whether you believe you can, or you can’t, you are right”. This refers to your mindset or mental attitude, and the concept that your mind is powerful enough to enable your thoughts to create your reality. If you have a negative attitude to your memory, it will likely reduce your chance of developing and maintaining a good memory. There are some simple steps you can take to start making changes to negative thoughts. Be aware that negative thoughts are just a habit, and habits can be changed with a little effort. Awareness is the key to changing a habit, as you need to consciously be aware of the current habit before you can change it – so start catching yourself in the act of making negative statements.Affirmyourintentiontoimprovethewayyouthink.Thencorrectthenegativestatementyoujustmade, and make it into a more positive one.

2. ABSENTMINDEDNESS / NOT PAYING ATTENTION Thefirststageofthememoryprocessisencodingtheinformationthatistoberemembered–thusthebrainuses the senses and emotions to process the information and form a memory. Here are some ways in which you can be less absentminded: - Setting an intention to become more attentive.-Sittingupfrontwheretherearelessthingstodistractyou,especiallyifyouhavedifficultypayingattentionin class.-Taking notes in class to ensure you listen.

3. STRESS / ANXIETY Stress will increase the likelihood of being distracted, resulting in low concentration meaning that information may not be encoded accurately – and thus cannot be later retrieved. Stress may also result in mental blanks. For example, if you’re stressed before an exam, you may not be able to think clearly and access and retrieve the information you need. The best thing to do is to take ten deep breaths and calm down to allow your mind to focus.
