MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It is with excitement tinged with sadness that we see the year draw to a close. 2019 has been so eventful and often enjoyable that it is sad that it’s nearly over; however, the excitement of the school holidays and new beginnings permeates the atmosphere at school this week.

I am always pleased to see so many parents and grandparents at our special end-of-year ceremonies and I thank you all for your continued support of the School.

WelcomeWe were very pleased to welcome our new School Psychologist at the end of November. Miss Amy O’Brien has been busily setting up protocols and programmes for the start of the 2020 school year.

FarewellsSadly, we have to bid farewell to some members of staff as the year draws to a close:• From our Meadow Springs Primary campus: Ms Katherine O’Reilly (Year 6); and Ms Amy Upton (Primary ICT); move on to new ventures; while Mrs Ann Boyle (Primary Music) is moving into semi-retirement again after helping us out in Semester 2;• From our Halls Head Primary campus: Miss Verity Brockman (Music) will be working closer to home; while Mrs Leisa Dawkins and Mrs Casey Slaughter have come to the end of a short term contracts.• In the Secondary School: Mr David Case (Mathematics), Mrs Emma Cristodero (Year 7) and Miss Danielle Jones (English and HASS) have come to the end of short term contracts; and Mr Reece Harris has concluded his one year traineeship in the Health and Physical Education Department.• Also leaving from Secondary are: Mrs Tina Knight (English) who will be returning to Queensland to be closer to family; Mr Brendan Martin (Humanities and Social Sciences) who is moving to Corpus Christi College; Mrs Jade Telford (Mathematics), who would like to spend more time with her family; and Ms Brooke Van Aalen (Drama) who has a position at Perth College. Finally from the Library, which is a Whole School position: Mrs Dianne Higginson has secured a Library Technician position at the Cathedral College in Wangaratta.

It’s au revoir to staff members who will be on leave for various periods starting next term and we wish them a wonderful period of rest and recovery:• Mrs Linda Preston (English), will be on leave in Term 1; • Mrs Alisha Stephens (Science), will be on Long Service Leave for all of Semester 1; and • Mrs Donna Thomas (Learning Enrichment) also has leave for Semester 1.

Also, to the families of students who are leaving us at the end of 2019, we wish you all the

best for the future.

Thank you and very well done to three staff members who have been in acting positions this year and one who is stepping down from a position:• Mrs Denise Logue – Acting Head of Mathematics;• Mrs Marlise Vaughan – Acting Assistant Head of Rose House; • Mr Ben Dunbar – Acting Assistant Head of Ellis House; and• Mrs Averil Evans – Assistant Head of Barrett House

Strategic PlanSo much work has been done on the Strategic Plan 2017 to 2020 that I have already completed a 30 page report to School Council and we still have one year to run on the Plan.

I would like to highlight just one aspect in this newsletter. It comes from the Core Activity Faith and Spirituality: I am so very proud of our students and staff who, in all areas of the School, arecommittedtoserviceandhelpingthoseinneedwitheitherfinancialassistanceor just their time:• Both Primary School choirs have concerts for the elderly at the local RAAFA (Meadow

Springs) and Mercy Place (Halls Head); while we have had the opportunity to send groups of Year 5 and Year 6 students to Amana Living – at the local Meadow Springs Village for joyous intergeneration singing and at Wearne House where the students have engaged in art projects with the residents.

• Our Secondary pilgrimages continue to Cambodia each year (led by the tireless Father Noel) and a staff pilgrimage, aptly named Walkabout Nomads, is planned for Laos next year.

• Across the School our students and staff raise funds for so many worthy causes. Every year each House chooses a charity; this year they have supported the following:

Arnold – The Smith Family Foundation Barrett – Mandurah Just Joeys Ellis – Mandurah HALO Gordon – Pat Thomas House Jamieson – The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Rose – The Variety Club• Other initiatives include Operation Christmas Child, the Peel Community Kitchen,

making and donating items to the Peel Maternity Unit, the Anglicare Sleepout for the Homeless, the Anglicare Student Ambassadors programme and fundraising for Story Dogs; while staff have also supported Relay for Life and the Cancer Council. There is so much that I fear I may have left something out – please forgive me if I have and let know what I need to include for the future.

Roy T Bennet, author of the book The Light in the Heart said this: Shine your light and make a positive impact on the world; there is nothing so honourable as helping to improve the lives of others. Our students and staff have done a great deal this year to do just that. Thank you, all! Keep shining!

And so as 2019 draws to a close, I wish all Frederick Irwin families a very blessed and holy Christmas, a Happy New Year and a safe, enjoyable holiday as you spend time with your family and friends.

Kind regards

Kerry RobertsonPrincipal

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As the year comes to a close, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this successful school year and the many positive experiences we have shared. In 2019, we have continued to try to make sure that our practices are evidenced-based and of high quality. We have continued to focus on meeting the academic and social/emotional needs of our students. I continue to share many special moments with the students related to their learning and the enjoyment they get from their experiences at school, and I feel blessed to be

part of their educational journey.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been giving considerable thought as to what message I would like to leave you with for 2019 and recently I was fortunate to hear a speech delivered by a young mother of a child with need who spoke from the heart about ‘seeing’ her child and his amazing abilities and I thought that is exactly what I wanttoconveytoyouinmyfinalmessageoftheyear.IseeyouandIacknowledgeyou:

Students, whenyoufindlearninghardandneedtopersevere,Iseeyou.Whenyoustruggle to manage your emotions and need help to self-regulate, I see you. When you have success in your endeavours and show pride in your achievements, I see you. When you need guidance and encouragement, I see you.

Staff, when you put in effort above and beyond for your students and their families, I see you. When you embrace new initiatives to enhance the educational outcomes of our students, I see you. When you support the children’s social-emotional needs at the expense of your lunch break or having time to eat, I see you. When you support families through times of uncertainty, I see you.

Families, when you support your children’s endeavours, I see you. When you give everything for their education and well-being, I see you. When you support us through your commitment to the School, I see you. When you encourage your children to be the best they can be, I see you.

To everyone who contributes to this school community in any way, I see you and I sincerely thank you! In today’s world, it is very important to see each other, to support each other and to be embracing of the needs of each other.

Thank you to the Primary staff, parents and community members for your contributions to the education of the students in 2019. The dedication of the hard working staff, and the contributions of our families, who support the School in so many ways, contribute positively to the success of the Primary school.

At the end of the school year, we have some staff who will be leaving, and I would like to thank them for their contributions to Frederick Irwin Anglican School and wish them well for the future. Ms Katherine O’Reilly who is completing her

contract with us at the end of the school-year, thank you. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and acknowledge your contributions to Frederick Irwin. We also say goodbye to Ms Amy Upton who has taught ICT to our students in Pre-Primary and Year 1 this semester. Amy will be taking the opportunity to spend more time with her young family and I thank her for her contributions, as a classroom teacher, in her early career, and as a part-time educator in ICT and Learning Enrichment over the past few years. Mrs Ann Boyle, who returned to teach Year 3/4 Music in Semester 2 is once again retiring and I sincerely thank Ann for her contributions to the Arts programme in the Primary School, especially her wonderful vision and execution of our latest Year 3 ‘mini’ musical. Thank you to these staff members for their contributions to the School. I wish them every success for the future.

Thank you to Mr Glyn Teape for his work with our students this year in his role as Deputy Head of Primary, especially for his work pastorally and with our House Captains, helping them to develop their leadership skills. Thank you to the Primary coordinators, Mrs Renee Goard, Mrs Janet Stirling, and Mrs Patricia Rehm, your work with staff and students is appreciated.

Thank you to the Year 6 students for their contribution to the Primary school. I wish them every success going forward. They have been a wonderful cohort of children who have contributed much to our section of the school. A special thank you to the House Captains and Junior Councillors for their work in Primary and representing the School in the wider community throughout the year. I have watched them grow in confidenceanddevelopstrongleadershipskills.

In closing, my best wishes go to all members of the community for a safe, happy and blessed Christmas and I look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2020.

Kind regards

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

Dear Parents End of Year ServicesThe year has ended appropriately with three lovelycommunityeventsthatwerefilledwithsigning and student achievements. I thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas assembly and loved the way in which our students sung with passion and spirit. Our Secondary School musicians were also wonderful and we appreciate their participation. Father Noel gave a meaningful Christmas message about love and giving, which was timely and very relevant. Our Year 3 to 6

Presentation assembly was also enjoyable and an opportunity for individual students to be recognised. The community singing at this event was fantastic. I also felt that the Thanksgiving service was a positive way to recognise the transition of our Year 6 students into Year 7. I know that this service was emotional and a heartwarming reminder of the memories our students have created.

House CaptainsOur House Captains were congratulated at the Year 3 to 6 assembly and did a wonderful job in leading both assemblies. Joshua Deere, Kiara Terblanche, Jayden Baumgartner, Precious Canlom, Keely Eversden and Tess Buckland have carried out their roles with dedication and maturity. They are commended on the way they have modelled our Core Values and should be proud of the way in which they conducted themselves. I know that their enthusiasm and commitment will be a good example for our future student leaders.

ChoirThe Choir performed at the Halls Head Shopping Centre on Friday 6 December. I want to thank all of the students and families that were able to attend. It was so nice to see our students performing in the community and I enjoyed singing along. The choir’sfinalperformancefortheyearwasattheYear3to6Presentationassembly.We are very proud of all the choir members and once again, thank Miss Brockman for her organisation and efforts with our students.

Beach Activities Yesterday, the Year 4,5 and 6 students made their way down to the beach for some fun activities. The students enjoyed themselves immensely and I thank Mrs Shepherd for her organisation and commitment to make this event happen. I would also like to thank Mrs Burbage for assisting in this organisation and the help of Mrs Smith, Miss Skehan, Mrs Taylor and Mr Tudor. Due to everyone’s efforts, the students were able to have a lovely experience by the ocean. The coastal area is certainly an area we want our students to continue investigating and we look forward to these opportunities in the future.

Blessed ChristmasI would like to wish everyone a blessed and safe Christmas. I look forward to spending time with my loved ones and hope that others get this same opportunity.

This year has been so positive for a multitude of reasons and it is hard to believe that the Halls Head campus has been established for two years. So many rich learning experiences have occurred this year and it reminds me of how important our Approach is. Our continued priority on allowing students to have input and ownership of their learning is paramount. Observing engaged learners actively developing their skills and knowledge is immensely rewarding. I thank our staff and students for a successful year and thank our community for their ongoing support.

Kind regards

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Christmas

A international supermarket chain says that they are “Good. Different.” They also run an advertisement that has a never ending ham, feeding everyone.

NewChristmasmoviesappearingonNetflixandStanall seem to have this “feel good” about them. But for many Christmas is a tough time. Movies and advertising give us an different idea about Christmas. Everything is perfect. It’s not. In fact, I have met a few people who

you could classify as Scrooges, who don’t like Christmas because of all the trappings, expectations and family pressures.

A good, different Christmas would be one like the Christmas that former Chapel Prefect, Mark Snow and his family have every year. They spend Christmas visiting people who don’t necessarily have family but would otherwise have no visitors at Christmas time nor Christmas presents, at an old folks home.

A recent program on the ABC about CEO’s sleeping on the streets in Australia, to discover what it was like for some people, discovered this. That the majority of the people on the streets, while they appreciate the food, the money etc., would appreciate more, some of our time to talk, to laugh, to share with them.

God so loved the world…in fact he loved us long before we loved Him… that He gave His only Son to talk, laugh and share with humanity, so that whoever believed in Him should have eternal life.

Make your Christmas, good and different this year.

God Bless

OVERSEAS SERVICE - LEARNING 2021

Part of the Year 10 Christian Studies Course for the past few years has been an attempt to help students understand Overseas Service Learning. Following a conference earlier this year,werebadgedourschoolprogramto‘OverseasService-Learning’tobetterreflectwhat our program is about. It is still overseas, it is still serving others where we are asked to, and it is learning about ourselves, others and God and how people of different cultures andbackgroundsalsoreflectonthosethreethings.

In 2020, we will have at least three students journeying to Samoa in July with ASC program and 10 students journeying to Cambodia and working with Cambodia Connect and Transform Cambodia.

We will also have a group of teachers from Peter Carnley Anglican Ccommunity School and Frederick Irwin travelling (at their own expense) to Laos in September/October 2020 to work with a local organisation called Big Mouse House. In 10 days, Father Noel and his wife leave for Laos to set up that trip.

All these experiences enhance the lives of others, both overseas and inside the fabric of our school community. It makes serving God, across the cultural and religious divides so much more real.

In Week 2 of Term 1 2020, an information evening for students and parents will be held regarding applications for Walkabout 2021 to Cambodia. I encourage anyone who is interested to spend the holiday break discussing the possibility of going overseas in 2021. Students who are eligible must be in Year 10 and 11 in 2020.

Year 7 Cyberbullying Video ShowcaseThe Year 7 students proudly presented their Cyberbullying videos on Tuesday 3rd December at the Video Showcase which is run every year in the Year 7 Centre. They have been working in groups to create a short video under 3 minutes, which promotes a positive message about the importance of being an Upstander, when dealing with bullying and cyberbullying. The videos were of a very high standard and will be used to support the teaching of the School’s eSmart cybersafety curriculum in 2020.

SCHOOL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Year 7 students have been working hard throughout the term in their Economics and Business classes to create products or services to sell at their Year 7 Fair, which was held on Friday 6 December 2019.

Students created products such as scented candles, scrubs scrunchies, bracelets, fresh juices (perfect for the hot weather on the day!), Christmas gifts plus many more items.

The Fair raised an amazing $2,050 with still a few more items to sell. The proceeds from the Year 7 Fair will be forwarded to the Peel Community Kitchen, who I’m sure will be using the donation to great effect over the busy Christmas period.

Thank you to all who helped, bought, supported or attended the fair - we really appreciated it!

Kind regards

SCHOOL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIESTUITION

STUDY SKILLSPREPARING FOR THE YEAR AHEADRest, relaxation, and time with family and friends is the main goal for students over the end of year holidays. However there are some things that students might like to consider doing, perhaps towards the end of the holidays, that will make their school year ahead much easier, particularly senior students. • Organise and rearrange your room and study space to make it a more effective

learning area.• Sort out all of your materials for school, decide what to keep and how to organise yourworkandifyoucanimproveyourfilingsystems.

• Set up term planners for the year so you can map put your due dates when the year starts.

• Set up a study timetable for the year so you have clear times allocated to complete your schoolwork during the week.

• Think about building your skills in any areas of weakness or any areas you’d like to develop new skills in like touch typing.

• Ifyoucanfindoutanyofthenovelsyouwillstudyinginthecomingyear,readthem over the holidays.

• For senior students consider downloading the syllabus documents for the subjects you will be studying.

Of course we also want students to refresh their mind and body, catch up on their sleep and take the time to focus on enjoying a healthy lifestyle. You can learn more about how to be a more effective student at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au by logging in with these details:Username: frederickirwinPassword: 192results
