Dear Parents and Caregivers

What an eventful and wonderful term this has been! Our calendar has been full, yet our school community has worked hard and a great deal has been achieved both academically and in the co-curricular domains of the School. Thank you to all the staff for the energy they have invested during the term and to our students for their commitment to their work and the many activities in which they have participated.

Year 5 CampOur Year 5s from both Primary campuses have enjoyed an active few days at Point Walter. All reports indicate that they have had an energetic and enjoyable experience. Thank you to the staff and parents who have made this possible for our Year 5 students.

Overseas Service Learning - Cambodia Our two-week Walkabout Cambodia trip departs on 14 April. It is a delight that there will be students and staff from John Wollaston Anglican Community School and Peter Carnley Anglican Community School joining our students and staff (Father Noel Oakey and Mrs Megan Crane) on this year’s pilgrimage. Once again the group will be working with Cambodia Connect as they embark on an intensive English-teaching programme at the Transform Centre. Our best wishes go with them.

Year 7 Learning JourneyThank you to our many parents who joined their children in the Year 7 Centre for their Learning Journey yesterday afternoon. When I visited the centre was was abuzz with students explaining their learning for Term 1.

Thank you also to the staff who put a great deal into the preparation for this special event.

Farewell and Au RevoirThe end of term is a time when we sadly farewell members of our school community.

To our students and families leaving Frederick Irwin, we hope that you will remember us fondly and wish you all the best for the future.

We also farewell Miss Min Kim (Japanese), Mr Max Stewart (Economics) and Mr Carl Grice (Year 5 – Halls Head) who have been relieving for teachers on Long Service Leave. We thank them for their service to the School and their work with our students.

We wish Mr Adam Barber (Information Technology) a very happy and relaxing period of Long Service Leave.

I, too, will be on Long Service Leave next term and, while I am very much looking forward to spending time with family and friends, I have been conscious all week of how much I will miss the School. In my absence, Mr Andrew Pennycott will be Acting Principal, Mrs Anne Crock – Acting Deputy Principal: Secondary, Mr Israel Carmody – Acting Head of Arnold House and Mrs Jade Telford–ActingAssistantHeadofArnoldHouse.Iwishthemallthebestandaprofessionallyfulfillingterm.

To all families, I wish you are wonderful break over the school holidays. I know that the staff will look forward to greeting everyone refreshed and ready for Term 2 at the start of May; and I certainly look forward to seeing you all again in Term 3.

Kind regards

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY – MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The holidays are upon us again, and this term has been another solid beginning to a new school year. Education Research Project (ERPs) expos have been happening which have showcased the skills the students have been working on. ERPs are skills-based, and the process of completing a project allows the students to identify skills that can be developed and built upon. This continual development of each child’s skill-set is very important for future learning. The process is a journey, and this is very evident as I see students’ progress from year to year. Well done to the Year 3s, our new cohort of Year 5s and other new students across Years 3 to 6 who have completed theirfirsteverERPthisterm.

This week the Year 5 students have been on a camp at Point Walter. This camp allows the students to participate in many activities that permit them to take ‘safe’ risks and to challenge themselves. Team building is also a strong feature of the activities undertaken and, when I visited for dinner last night, the students were in high spirits and really enjoying the experience. Thank you to the staff and parent helpers who were part of this adventure. Everyone returned this afternoon happy and ready for a well-earned rest over the holidays.

Over the past two weeks, two and three-way conferences have allowed parents and caregivers to meet with their children’s classroom teachers for discussions about their learning and progress. In Year 4 to Year 6, the students also attended these conferences and were part of the discussions relating to their learning. These discussions will hopefully lay solid foundations for the way forward over the coming terms. It is important that all families make an appointment with their child’s teachers so if you haven’t made an appointment so far, please contact the teacher concerned to make an appointment early in Term 2.

Our Inter-School Swimming team competed in the PSSA A Division carnival on Tuesday and represented Frederick Irwin very well in the way they conducted themselves on the day. Congratulations to Mr Ford and the team as they won the overall and handicap competitions. We also had some outstanding individual results. The team performed very well throughout the day with many students gaining places in their races. Thank you to our parent helpers on the day. Thank you also to Miss Walmsley, Miss Cave and Mr Ford for helping with the training sessions and accompanying the team to the carnival.

Individual Champions:

Year 6 Boys Runner-up Champion – Chayse NichollsYear 4 Boys Champion – Mason Harry Year 4 Boys Runner-up Champions – Oden Birmingham and Phoenix HarryYear 4 Girls Champion – Addisyn Starkey

Sincere thanks and appreciation are extended to the Primary staff who work extremely hard in ensuring they are providing quality educational experiences for the learners in their care. Their dedication to your children often goes above and beyond with the care they offer. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of our parents and community members who have been involved in any way in the children’s learning across the term. Teachers appreciate your help both within the classrooms and with the many events and activities organised across the Primary campus at Meadow Springs.

Asthefirsttermdrawstoaclosetoday,Iwisheveryoneasafe,blessedandfun-filledbreakoverEaster and the holidays. I look forward to welcoming you all back for Term 2 in late April. If the weather is warm students can return in Week 1 in their summer uniform.

Dear Parents

House DaysIt was wonderful to see all the Jamieson House students from Kindergarten to Year 6 come together this term to participate in a House Service, special lunch and activities in the gymnasium. All the students conducted themselves so well and had lots of fun. I would like to extend a big thank you to Mr Guy Burbage, Head of Jamieson House; Mrs Tamryn Dearlove, Jamieson House Coordinator in Primary; and all Secondary leaders who planned and prepared all the lunchtime activities for the students. We are now looking forward to four House Days next term, with Arnold and Gordon House Days early next term. More information will follow early in Term 2.

Anzac ServicesDuring the upcoming holidays, we have four House Captains representing Frederick Irwin at the annual RAAFA Estate Anzac Service on ANZAC Day. The captains will have special rolestofillasflagbearersandwreathlayers.Weappreciatethestudentsgivingupsomeof their holiday time for such an important service. I know all the residents and staff at the RAAFA appreciate us supporting the service. We wish them all the best.

We will have our own ANZAC Service on Friday 3 May, commencing at 11:50am in the Primary Area. All Pre-Primary to Year 6 students will attend and parents and community members are most welcome.

Term 1 EventsAsTerm1drawstoanend,itisatimetoreflectonalltheeventsandhappeningsfromthisterm at Frederick Irwin. One of the highlights was the Year 6 trip to Canberra. The places that these children visited will be forever in their memories, and I would like to thank Mrs Sue Kirke for her leadership of this trip, as well as the tireless effort and work of the Year 6 staff, Father Noel and Mrs Rehm when we were in the Nation’s Capital. I know that the students who participated in the alternate programme also had a wonderful time, with one of the highlights being visiting the WA Parliament.

As you read this newsletter, the Year 5 students would have only just returned from their Point Walter Camp. This provides a wonderful opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones and participate in activities that require some risk-taking and new challenges. It is also a great chance to make new friends and for the new students to Frederick Irwin to feel a little more comfortable.

These wonderful experiences available to our older students will ensure that all those in Year 4 and below have two great ‘rites of passage’ to look forward to.

HolidaysI want to take this opportunity to thank all Frederick Irwin families for their support over Term 1. Wishing you all a blessed Easter and a relaxing holiday with your families. I look forward to seeing you at the start of next term.

Kind regards

Dear Parents and Caregivers

IthasbeenalovelyfirsttermandIamverypleased with the efforts of our students. I continue to be impressed with the enthusiasm that I witness from students on a daily basis. I genuinely enjoy speaking to students about their learning and hearing the excitement in their voices about what is going on in the classroom. This was certainly the case when I attended a Year 3 to 6 Expo this week and was incredibly impressed with the maturity that our students were demonstrating. Observing students actively involved in supporting each other’s learning journey was fantastic.

Hearing students speak about how they have linked their interests into their learning intentions was equally as rewarding. I know that our students are excited for their break and chance to spend time with family. This is an important time for our students, staff and families and I hope that it is a time of connection. I wish everyone a blessed Easter.

ANZAC ServiceOn Friday 3 May, we will be conducting our ANZAC service at 10am. The service will be infrontoftheflagpolesandourparentsandfamiliesarecertainlyinvitedtothisspecialoccasion.Thisservicewillbeanopportunitytorecognisethosethathavesacrificedforothers. There will be a speaker from the RSL as well as an opportunity for students to lay a token of remembrance for someone in their family.

Our House Captains will also be attending the Dawesville Dawn service on 25 April at 6am. Our Captains will be laying a wreath on behalf of Frederick Irwin Anglican School. I look forward to also attending this event and am pleased that we have been invited by the RSL.

Inter School Swimming CarnivalOn Thursday 4 April, our students participated in the Inter-School Swimming Carnival. I wasabletoattendbrieflyandwasthrilledtoseeourstudents’levelofcamaraderieandhealthy competition. Our students were supporting one another, applauding students from other schools and representing Frederick Irwin admirably. We performed well as a school and also had some individual achievements. I thank Mrs Shepherd for her organisation and hard work. We will recognise individual students in Week 3 on Friday 17 May during assembly.

Be YouBe You is a mental wellbeing framework that is used across the School to support us in guiding our pastoral initiatives. Self-Management is a set of skills that we teach students explicitly in the classroom. Our goal is to assist students in learning how to manage their emotions, develop a positive self-image and learn appropriate behaviours. Below is an excerpt from Be You, which outlines some ways to support the development of self-management skills.

Developing Coping Skills You can support the self-management skills by explicitly teaching ways children can notice and manage their emotions. These might include:

• Talking about problem-solving ways of managing upsetting situations (for example, having a calm thought or moving away)

• Developing a strategy to use when they’re feeling out of control (for example, having a ‘calm thought or picture’, taking time out by having a family member read them a calming story, or talking with someone about how they feel)

• Expressing their emotions in productive ways (for example, by drawing or acting out their feelings with toys or stage props)

• Helping children slow down their breathing (for example, by blowing bubbles or pretending to blow out birthday candles) and encouraging them to take deep breaths

• Practicing mindful breathing with older children and young people.

Kind regards

SCHOOL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Last week Frederick Irwin was involved in the Metro Cup Inter-School Tennis Competition run by Tennis WEST and held at Robertson Park Tennis Club. This year we took four teams: two Secondary boys and two Secondary girls. The students played incredibly well, and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner.

After playing all morning in a round robin competition – six games of singles and doubles, bothour‘A’teamsmadeitthroughtothequarterfinals.ThegirlswerethendefeatedbyApplecross B in some very close matches in the main draw and the boys had a great play- off with Mandurah Catholic College in the consolation draw, although unfortunately we couldn’t quite get the match.

Thank you to all the parents who got students to school very early, drove team members to Perth and came up to support the teams.

BLAZERS Blazers are a compulsory item of the winter uniform for all students from Years 7 - 12.

DRY CLEANING YOUR BLAZER The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance and advice relating to the safe laundering and dry cleaning of your Frederick Irwin School Blazer. Thefirstruleisthatblazersshouldneverbehome-laundered.Treatyourblazerlikeanysuitingjacket–whichis dry clean only. Just like a suit, blazers have high quality fabric (containing wool) together with fusing and lining which must be professionally cleaned. A quality dry cleaner should be used where possible. The above said, there are some dry cleaners that do not always dry clean in accordance with garment specifications.Theprimarycomplaintaboutdrycleaningisover-heating.Whenablazerisover-heated,the fusing (used to make collars and the lapel maintain shape) will come away from the fabric and result in bubbles, a wave pattern or bulging. An experienced dry cleaner will know this and can prevent this from happening. Frederick Irwin’s blazer manufacturer recommends using a larger-scale dry cleaner rather than small shopping center-based dry cleaners. Larger volume dry cleaners tend to have experience with special garments. If you are in any doubt, do not be afraid to ask questions about the dry cleaner’s practices and knowledge. Sound dry cleaning practices will ensure your blazer will last longer.
