Dear Parents and Guardians of 2nd Graders:
We hope you are having a wonderful new year and are excited about the second semester of school. As you
probably are aware, your child has been using an iPad at school since September. The teachers have been very
impressed with the level of maturity and care that the second graders have used when working with their new
technology.
Beginning Monday, January 28, your second grade student will be bringing his or her iPad and charger
home. Each night, please have your son or daughter check the battery level and charge the iPad as needed, so that
the iPad is fully charged and ready to go back to school the next day. Please keep the charger at home – do not
send it to school.
Here are a few more helpful tips that we would kindly ask you to discuss with your child at home:
Always keep the iPad in the case so it does not break.
Hold your iPad with both hands so it is less likely to drop, even when you are walking.
Running with an iPad is not allowed.
iPads are not to be used on the buses to and from school.
Use a clean, dry, soft cloth to clean your iPad if necessary.
Keep food and drinks away from your iPad.
When you are packing up your iPad in your book bag, be careful not to pack your iPad next to a water
bottle in case the water bottle leaks.
Keep your iPad in a special place in your home so you know where it is.
Do not leave your iPad outside or in the car. Rain as well as extreme hot and cold temperatures can
damage your iPad.
If your iPad breaks, please tell your parents or guardians so they can contact the school right away to repair
your iPad. Your child will be provided a loaner iPad through the school library while repairs are made.
Follow your parent’s rules about when the iPad or the Internet should be used at home.
Do not add, delete, or change any programs or apps on the iPad.
Do not loan your iPad to anyone else, and do not tell anyone your password (except your parents).
The iPad is protected from showing inappropriate material just like at school. If you see anything that is
inappropriate, tell your parents and your teacher.
To add the iPad to your home WiFi, search for Settings, then select WiFi, choose the desired network and
enter your security code.
Parents, please note that the students’ iPads are filtered at home just as they are at school. When the students are
on a home WiFi network, at this time, they will still need to go through a sign-in process in order to access the
Internet. If the login screen does not appear, try accessing a standard website http://www.ht-sd.org/ to bring up the
login prompt. If they take their device to a family member’s house, a friend’s house, or another place, they will be
asked to login again.
2
Here is a picture of what the login screen looks like:
All students from each school can use the same username and password for this initial login in order to access the
filter. Please see the chart below for the username and password for your child:

Additional information for parents, including answers to “Frequently Asked Questions,” can be found under
“Digital Transformation” through the “Arts & Academics” tab on the front page of our website at:

Thank you for your kind attention to this matter. As always, if you have any questions or need any additional
information, please reach out to your principal.
Sincerely,
Elementary Principals

#bethekindkid
The message of kindness has been emphasized at Wyland this school year in many ways, including
participating in the #bethekindkid movement. Several years ago two students at an Avonworth elementary
school, along with their teacher, started a club to make small items for others as a way to demonstrate
kindness. Their club – which has blossomed into a student-run business named JAM Enterprises – offers a
shirt with the “#bethekindkid” message.
The shirts serve as a reminder to others to be the kid who does the right thing, be the nice kid, be the kind
kid. JAM encourages #WearItWednesdays, where students wear their #bethekindkid shirts as a reminder to
themselves and to others that they will “be the kid who does the right thing, be the nice kid, be the kind
kid.” Wearing #bethekindkid shirts is not a requirement. Wyland promotes wearing any blue/gold shirts on
Wednesdays in lieu of #bethekindkid shirts.
JAM is offering blue shirts with gold lettering. There are short sleeve t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, and
sweatshirts available in youth and adult sizes (S-XXXL). If you are interested in purchasing a shirt for your
student (or for yourself), please fill out the form below and return it to the school office by February 1st.

Box Tops Raffle and Contest
Did you know that each Box Top earns 10¢ for the school?
These can really add up. In years past, the Wyland PTO has earned as
much as $1,500 in a school year, which covers a lot of programs!
We collect box tops throughout the school year and submit them to Box
Tops for Education. We are approaching the first mailing deadline – so
gather up your box tops and send them in with your child(ren)! Please send
the box tops in an envelope or a baggie with your child’s name.
As an incentive, we will have a drawing where each grade level
will have a winner for a $1 Wymart gift certificate (so make sure your
child’s name is marked on the baggie and turned into their teacher).
There will also be a classroom contest throughout the year.
Each classroom’s box tops will be counted, and
the classroom that collects the most will win a prize!
Please send in your box tops by
February 22nd for the next drawing.
There is also a convenient, free mobile app that allows you to earn
box top money for Wyland without having to physically cut out box tops.
You can use the app to find offers, scan your receipt, and watch your
earnings add up! Look for the app in the Apple store or Google Play.
(Wyland greatly appreciates Box Top earnings, whether they are through the app or
cut off of products. Due to the nature of the program, the grade level and classroom
prizes will be based on box tops that are physically cut out and sent in to school.)
A list of products that offer box tops is on the next page.
