J ohn Calvin (grandfather of the Presbyterians) wrote once, “Scripture

sets forth no more illustrious or memorable example of faith than in David, especially if you look at the whole course of his life” (Institutes, 3.2.17). The story of King David has so much to it, in fact, that the book of Hebrews actually states the writer doesn’t have time to talk about how faithful David was (Hebrews 11:32). David’s story is so incredible that it spans all the way into the New Testament genealogy of our savior, Jesus Christ (see Matthew 1). Every other king following David was compared to David. If you asked the Israelites of the New Testament about their “hay day” they would have told you that their hay day was back to King David and could they please have the days of King David again?

David’s story is ubiquitous. Even most non-Christians know the story of how a shepherd boy used a stone and a sling to take down the giant Goliath. David is a true hero of the bible, appearing in Bible studies, Sunday and vacation bible school curriculums, books, movies, songs, and poetry. His story is so familiar we’re pretty sure we can tell the story with our eyes closed…

…which tends to be problematic.

Often a story is so familiar that to hear it again is to realize how many details we actually forget. Telling it with our eyes closed means we don’t pay attention to other parts of the story – the characters whose names escape us like Abinadab, Michal, Absalom, and Bathsheba (okay, you probably don’t forget the name of Bathsheba). This summer, we’re going to step into a time machine during worship to travel back to about 1,000 BCE when Israel first decided she needed an earthly king. We’ll watch as Samuel steps into his role as prophet to anoint first a man named Saul and then a teenager named David. We’ll be with David when he defeats Goliath and when he flees from the king who would really prefer that David was dead. We’ll mourn with David when Saul dies and dance with David when the Ark of the Covenant returns to Jerusalem. We will squeeze our eyes shut when David watches Bathsheba on her roof and open our eyes to see the treachery of David’s own son. Finally, we will be there when

(Continued on page 4)

Hebrews 11:32 “And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets”

From the Pastor Rev. Rebecca Mallozzi

the people lay David to rest and celebrate the rise of his son, King Solomon.

These stories remind us how human biblical heroes are and how God uses these humans in His grand story of salvation. These people were not perfect, by any means, and David had his shares of flaws (as do we). Yet God used even those flaws for opportunities to illustrate His grace.

Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve read through King David’s story (1 and 2 Samuel). And maybe you’ve never read through his story in its entirety. This summer I invite you to jump into these stories with me. See why Calvin calls David an “illustrious and memorable example of faith.”

We obviously won’t be able to cover every single verse of 1 and 2 Samuel, so I invite you to read through these books with open eyes on your own or with a Bible Buddy as we work through many of the stories in worship over the course of the summer. Keep in mind the words of the Apostle Paul who said, “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). May these stories teach, encourage, and challenge you this summer!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Rebecca Mallozzi

To My Faith Family, It is with great sadness I am writing to you that I am resigning from all my Vocal and Handbell Choir Director positions. It has been nothing but absolute joy for me to work not only with the children, youth and adults at Faith, but to also get to know and love the congregation as well. That love has always been returned in multiples to me and my family. You’ve always taken care of us so well. Right now our family is moving in a different direction. We will be at Faith for a few more years but our ultimate goal is to move somewhere warm. We will see where the Lord takes us! I wish nothing but the best for Faith Presbyterian Church. My time spent here will always hold a special place in my heart. In Christ’s Love, Tammi Howorth

Retreat

Women’s

Thursday Study Group Retreat May 11-13, 2018

F ive women from the Thursday Bible Study Group retreated to a house in the Poconos on Locust Lake for two days of food, stories, games, laughter, and

study. There was even time for a walk between the rains! We studied Henri Nouwen’s book “The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming,” looking at ourselves as the younger son, the older son, and how we might grow into the role of the father in our lives.

The retreat ended with a communion worship service on Sunday morning before journeying home. Those attending: Toni Fernandez, JoAnne Herring, Lynn Ingram, Deanna Robinson, Sue Vitale.

Summer is coming…..

S ummer means hot temperatures and the pool, family vacations, days at Dorney, hours at the park, Rita’s

and the inevitable I’m bored. It also means summer camp. Specifically, Kirkwood Camp our friendly neighborhood Presbyterian camp.

The upcoming summer season at Kirkwood Camp is exciting. There are new programs and activities available to go along with the tried and true activities of the previous summers. New for the 2018 season camp-wise is the Fantasy Camp, available for grades 3-12, campers dress as their favorite fantasy character as Kirkwood transforms into another world. Also new is the Mystery Camp, available for grades 4-6, campers work within their groups over the week to follow the clues and solve a mystery!

Along with our new theme weeks there are some new activities available like Frisbee golf and a couple of new and improved elements to the ropes course that you will just have to see for yourself. Of course there are still the old favorites like swimming in the lake, canoeing, arts and crafts, singing, basketball and the list could just go on and on.

Kirkwood Camp has a number of different weeks available starting June 17th (gosh I hope school is out by then) running through August 4th. Above I mentioned the Fantasy and Mystery camps, but there is Traditional Camp, Music Camp, Night Owl, Joy of Creation…. You get the idea? There is something there for every kid.

We want everyone to be able to come so there is tiered pricing available along with financial help available through the Faith Presbyterian as well as Kirkwood too. If going to camp would seem to be a challenge financially or if there are special needs that are needed please feel free to contact John Gill, Diane Millick or contact the camp directly at 570-421-8625 or [email protected].

To learn more pamphlets are available in the Narthex or check them out on the web at www.Kirkwoodcamp.org.

Tree Dedication

O n May 4, a Rising Sun redbud tree was planted on church grounds. On May 27, the Emmaus Garden Club hosted a dedication of the tree they purchased in

memory of Dorothy Nicholas, a long-time member of both the Garden Club and Faith Presbyterian Church.

The service of dedication was led by Faye Schuler, the president of the Garden Club. Dorothy’s daughter Heather Nicholas expressed her gratitude for the lovely gift her mother would have cherished. A cookie reception was held following the dedication, and many of those attending had fond memories to share.

Lava still flowing into Pacific Ocean, causing health concerns By Rick Jones | Presbyterian News Service

L OUISVILLE – It’s been weeks since Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano began erupting

on the big island, creating a spectacle of bright lava flow and billowing ash. In its latest report, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says the seismic levels, ground cracking and eruptions have gradually increased and several lava flows have merged.

Authorities say health concerns have risen as the lava pours into the ocean, causing an acidic plume of acid gas, steam and volcanic particles. Combined, they can cause skin and eye irritation as well as breathing problems.

“The southeast end of the island needs prayer. I cannot image what they are going through,” said Dana Pagalaboyd, with Hawaii Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. “They live in what sounds like a war zone, with the constant uncertainty of where the next fissure is going to show up, and how much lava is going to spew out and cover land.”

“PDA continues to be in communication with our representative in Hawaii,” said Jim Kirk, PDA’s associate for national disaster response. “We are thankful there has been no loss of life. The situation is dynamic and PDA stands ready to help when called upon.”

FEMA officials say there is a Temporary Flight Restriction in effect through May 26. Boating around the area has also been suspended for most watercraft.

“Prayer is the most that anyone can do for the island right now,” said Pagalaboyd. “Please continue to keep the island of Kauai close as they continue to recover and rebuild.”

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance can respond to disasters because of gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing.

Crafters Wanted!

T he Women of Faith’s (WOF) 4th Annual Holiday Craft Fair is set for Saturday, December 1. While that sounds like a long way from now, the preparation for the

WOF have sent out information and registration forms to the various crafters and vendors that have been here in the past. New crafters and vendors, featuring unique and quality items, are always sought. SCRIP Program

T hank you to all the participants in the Great Lakes SCRIP and Weis gift card programs. Profits for the year 2018 have been designated to the Operating

Budget again this year. Please help this program continue to provide funds to the church by making purchases using SCRIP.

The total amount raised so far in 2018 is $278.05. The next deadline is June 10. Faith Church uses the scrip fundraising program, allowing church members to

raise money for the church. Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards.

You simply purchase gift cards from the church at face value. The cards are then ordered by the church’s Scrip coordinator at a reduced price. The difference is an instant rebate for the church, which is then used to defray the costs of items that Session has approved of in advance. In the past, the rebates have helped to pay for blacktop repair and lighting improvement.

Help the church make this program a bigger success!! For a complete list of retailers or for more information check the table in the Fellowship Hall or www.glscrip.com. Contact Lynda Scheirer at [email protected] if you have any logistical questions.

H as anyone noticed how popular the coffee bar in the Narthex has

become? Many people seem to be enjoying a jolt prior to church. That is great! Just another way of sharing God’s grace. The trouble is that we like to share God’s grace, but He counts on us to do the footwork. No matter how much I thank God for my morning coffee, He has yet to make it for me. I always have to set the timer and measure it all out, the night before.

Fellowship is an important aspect of life at Faith. It makes folks feel comfortable and welcome. It really is what some find attractive about our church. The trouble is, this takes work. With lives

getting busy and schedules ever changing, it becomes increasingly more difficult to pull off all these acts of kindness. I for one receive great joy from service work. It’s how I have gotten through some miserable times in my life. It is a healthy choice and benefits others as well as myself.

The Fellowship Committee needs members. You don’t have to do it all. You do not even have to do anything. We may just need an idea or help with a sign-up sheet; someone to write or send a letter, or drop off a flier. Whatever you can do, it will make you feel a part of something and that always feels good.

We have lots of activities planned in the future but we need help.

More picnics. Trips to local concerts, sporting events, plays. See Jesus at Sights and Sounds, road trips,

Fires on Friday. Sponsor events, movies, concerts on the lawn.

Movies after dark. Join with other local churches for Christian Conversations and Coffee. Community dinners.

Report of the Treasurer

Operating receipts for the month of March were $676 lower than budgeted. Expenses were $6,355 over budget. Major expense items contributing to the overrun were: Tree removal costs ($2,450); Heating oil ($2,042); Simplex Grinnell fire safety system maintenance ($1,267); and the addition of March’s Youth Director salary expense, not captured last month ($683). For the four-month year-to-date results, receipts are $17,536 higher than budgeted, and expenses are $3,808 over budget.

A motion was approved to receive the report.

6-8 PM. Linda created a logo and registration forms are ready. Will set up bulletin board in May. Mission component is Groceries Plus. On Thursday will have parents come at 7:45 for a few songs, mission offering, and closing. Will make a video to share with the congregation. Not many volunteers yet. Will do minute for mission May 20th. Need at a minimum a leader for each of the rotations, an adult to guide each rotation group, and hopefully some additional helpers.

Fall Sunday School – will continue to have K-5 Sunday School during the church service for 2018-2019 school year. Will ask the nursery provider to do a story/coloring page for the 3 and 4 year olds.

Confirmation will be May 20.

Worship:

The adding of acoustic panels was discussed. There is not a volunteer from the worship committee who is interested in leading this activity. Lisa will ask at session if there is someone there who is interested in taking this on. Dick has made sketches showing the locations for the panels.

A few large print bulletins will be made available each week.

Attendance was light for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.

The meeting was closed with prayer.

Respectfully submitted, Tim Melnick, Elder
