At Second Street Community School, we are committed to be a respectful,

joyful, and safe learning environment where we all strive to be our best.

Family, Friends and Diversity

In February, we take time to celebrate friends, family and diversity on two special days: Family Day and

Pink Shirt Day. At 2nd Street, we too are a family and community of learners, friends and colleagues.

Community – a simple word, but it means so much to how we view ourselves as a school.

This year our grade 7 students once again participated in a provincial survey called the Middle

Development Index (MDI) that addressed the dimensions of health and well-being of our students. As a

school staff, we remain tremendously proud of the results that demonstrate that our students are thriving in:

Adult relationships

Peer relationships

Self esteem

Optimism

Empathy

These results remind us of what we already know: 2nd Street is a school with heart. As members of your

school family, we encourage you to take time on BC Family Day and Pink Shirt Day to celebrate diversity

and family values with your children. The BC Government is partnering with the BC Recreation and Parks

Association to bring family friendly events to communities across BC. Click here for more information:

ILLNESS

This month, many students are away from school due to illness. This is not unusual

for this time of year. Please help us all remain healthy by remembering to keep

your child at home if he/she is ill. We have had several students come to school

only to be sent home shortly after arrival due to illness. If you child is ill, and is at

home, please be sure he/she has recovered before returning to school. There is

no supervision inside at lunch in case they are ill. If they are too ill to go outside,

they should remain at home.

We are also reminding students to wash their hands frequently to prevent

spreading germs.

MESSAGE FROM 2ND STREET’S BAND TEACHER

And The Band Played On . . .

On the evenings of December 16 at Seaforth Elementary and

December 17 at Nelson Elementary, students from all nine of Mr. D’s

elementary school bands performed for family and friends. At the

conclusion of the concerts, many from the audience were heard to

say how pleasantly surprised they were at the quality of the playing.

Mr. D was also very impressed with both performances where the 80

and 70 students played together so well while producing a beautiful

sound with excellent intonation. He is convinced the impressive

results achieved in the three months since students started playing

their instruments is a testament to the high quality of music

education they have received from music specialists throughout

their elementary school years. He hopes this will be the beginning of their instrumental experience in

Burnaby and that many of his students will be registering for high school band. In addition to all the proven

social and intellectual benefits derived from a music education, participating in a high school music

program provides students with a unique opportunity to continue through high school in the same class

with their friends.
