Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that October has already arrived. The crispness of the air and the changing colour of the leaves are

daily reminders of the change in seasons. We have had a very busy September as students settled into their new classes

and participated in a wide array of activities and special events.

One such special event was our annual Terry Fox run, which was held this past Wednesday afternoon. With the support

of Mr. Barron, our Grade Six and Seven leadership students worked together to help our school honour a great Canadian.

The students created daily announcements, collected money, organized and ran our first COLA. They did a remarkable

job in leading our school as we supported Terry’s legacy to fight cancer.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Gilpin PAC for organizing the wonderful Gilpin Gala that took

place on Friday, September 18th. It was a fantastic way to bring everyone together, welcome new families, and catch up

with friends and neighbours. I also thank you all for supporting our school by participating in this fun family event.

Our Intermediate students (and a few brave Grade Threes), coached by Mr. Barron and Mrs. Kenny-Clark, have been

representing Gilpin at District cross country events. They are a dedicated group of students, arriving at school for early

morning practices and staying late to compete in the races. The students have been great ambassadors for our school

and I thank them for their commitment.

We hope to see you all at our Blessing Ceremony Monday afternoon at 2:30 and/or the next COLA on October 30th.

I look forward to working with you all this year. Please feel free to drop by my office, email, or call if you have any

questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Blake Briscoe

What: Art on the Office Wall

Who can Enter: Students Grades Kg -7 Theme: “Fall Colors and Back to School”. Needs: Place your name, age and division on the back of 8.5 x 11”paper. Give artwork to Mrs. Poato in the office

Due Date: September 28th 3:00 pm

Everyone that enters will have a chance to be on the Art Wall at least once during the course of the year. Students may submit artwork to Mrs. Poato by Monday, September 28

th. Selected artwork will be

placed on the ‘Office Art Wall’ for two months. Mrs. Poato will be doing additional themed contests such as Seasons or holiday events (Halloween, Winter / Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Summer) every few months. After we take the selected artwork down, a bound book will be made for all students to see their accomplishments - as students often like to look at books when they come to the office.

We will try to place all art up on the wall, but if we get a huge response and they all can’t fit on the wall, we will place the additional ones in the book.

Gilpin Fundraisers

Please remember that every time you go to Boston Pizza Brentwood on Lougheed Hwy and you tell them that you're part of Gilpin, 10% of our pre-tax bill will go towards Gilpin!

Please ensure that your lunch forms are submitted by the deadlines. The deadlines are there as we need to provide the orders to our suppliers 5-7 days before the lunch. Summarizing all the orders takes time and we need to ensure that our parent volun-teers who run the lunches have some lead time.

COLA: September 30, 2015

The first Celebration of Learning assembly happened on September 30th and we would like to thank all

the parents, teachers and students for coming out and making it a success. Emily from division 1 and Jared from division 2 did an amazing job as MC’s. The whole Grade 6/7-leadership team did an excel-lent job and should be proud of themselves. Mrs. Morissey put together a flawless slideshow that show-cased some great pictures from last year’s sports day and Mrs. Wong-Boog’s class really showed us what it means to be a community during their presentation. Also, Mr. Barron did a touching speech, gave out t-shirts and put together another meaningful and heartfelt Terry Fox assembly and run. Mr. Barron, on behalf of the staff, parents and students your dedication to the Terry Fox event at Gilpin has always been appreciated and we will have some big shoes to fill.

Leaving the School Students are not permitted to leave the school dur-

ing school hours without consent from a parent or

guardian. We would appreciate it if you would ar-

range medical appointments outside of school

hours. However, if your child must leave during

regular school hours, a note is required. Students

who normally eat lunch at school must bring written

permission before they are allowed to leave the

grounds during the lunch hour. A note is also re-

quired if your child is going to another child’s house

for lunch. If a student needs to go home due to

sudden illness, we will contact a parent/guardian or

an emergency contact. Finally, if you have ar-

ranged for a friend or relative to pick up your child,

please send a note to the classroom teacher.

Walking To School • Know the route your child takes to and from

school and how long it takes

• Encourage your child to walk with a friend or in a group and know the telephone numbers and addresses of these friends.

• Arrange for your child to arrive at school as close to the morning bell time as possible. Set a time for your child to report home after school.

• Encourage your child to wear light colored clothing so that s/he is easily seen on rainy, dark days

• Review street safety rules with your child.

Nut Aware School We have a number of children in our school who

have serious, life-threatening peanut/nut allergies.

This means that any contact with peanuts/nuts or

nut products in the classroom, in even trace

amounts, may endanger the child’s life. We are

requesting the assistance of all our families in

keeping our school a peanut and nut aware envi-

ronment. You can help by not sending snacks and

lunch items that contain nuts or nut oils. We appre-

ciate your cooperation in this matter. Further infor-

mation will be passed on by your child’s classroom

teacher.

Scent Awareness We have staff members and children who have

scent allergies and become quite ill when they are

exposed to scents, perfumes and other scented

products. We ask you to refrain from wearing

scented products when visiting the school. Your

cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

PLEASE INFORM THE OFFICE

WHEN:

Your child is ABSENT

Your child will be away for a holiday

Students are LATE –They must sign in

at the office

Rainy days With the weather changing please have your child dress

appropriately. We will try to send the students outside

for recess and lunch unless the weather is very uncoop-

erative and raining heavily.
