2013 Golden Spike Awards Dinner On May 18. 2013. in celebration of the 7~th Anniversary ofNcw Chinatown. thc Chinese Historical Society of Southern California hosted its annual Golden Spike Awards Dinner. The Golden Spike Award honors those lhal ha"e made a major impacl 00 the Chinese American cOnlnlWlily. This year's honorees included founding businesses of New Chinalown: Grand Star Jazz Club.

Jin Hing & Co" K.G . Louie, Phocni~ Bakery. Phoenix Inlports and Sincere Imports. These family businesses are s1il1 operated today by the deseendants of lhe founders. Thc society also honored individual icons Jack Ong, Milton Quon and Cy Wong.

Dr. Siu had a privale practice in aneslhesia for o"er 30 yellS. wofking primarily oul of San Gabriel Valley Hospital. He was v,ell respected by the surgeons. adored by the nurses and Im'ed by his patients.

In his community, Tim was a generous with his time and money through many philanthropic organizations. He scn'ed as President of the Alhambra Rotary and v,ent On 10 become District Governor ofROUlry District no. He was on the Board of Directors for multiple organizations: the West San Gabriel Valley YMCA. Ihe Disaster Committee of Ihe American Red Cross, and the San Gabriel Valley Medical Center. Tim also scrved on Ihe Board ofCouncilms ofCSU Pomona. CSU Los Angeles and the USC School of l'ha!l11acy.

The cily of Alhambra has benefitted tremendously from the community scrvice of Tim Siu. He participated in Ihe City of Alhambra Planning Commission. Alhambra Civil Scrviee Commission. and the Committee 10 Build the New Alhambra Police Stalion. He and Annie co-chaired lhe committee 10 raisc funds for a new Alhambra Public Li brary as well.

Involved in the Chinesc community. Tim oomributed 10 Ihe Chinese Hi slOrical Society. the Chinesc American Citizens Alliance, Ihe Chinesc Public Scrviee Association, and the Chinese American Museum. He served as President of Ihe Chinese American Physicians Society of Soul hem California.

Roy Shigcki Nakayama, 93, passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Baldwin Park 0lI Sunday, May 5.

Roy was born in HelJlCr. Utah on August 29. 1919. Roy was a resident ofRi.'enidc County for mOre than 80 yt'alS and a resident ofG1cn Avon (Jurupa Valley) for 67 years.

Roy was interned during World War !I al camp One in Poston. Arizona.

Roy and Lillian, his wife. were involved with the Gten A,'on Elementary SchoolI'TA and he served as I'T A President

He was Cub ScoutmasterofPack 29 a\ Gten A,'on Elementary School in the 1950's.

Latcr Roy and Lillian were pan oflhc Rivenide flower Show and he served as its Presi­dent in 1979.

Roy also §cr'>ed as a Boy SeoUl Commissioner f()T Riverside County. Roy was elected to Jurupa Unified School Dislriet from 1969 to 1977 and was Board President in 1970. Roy served as clerk of the board four times.

Roy was predeceased by his wife. lillian (Okano) Nakayama.

Roy is sUr'>ived by his four sons. Benjamin (Dom:n). Roderick (Caror), Clifford (Sharon) and Brian: his brother Tom (Ruth) KOIOw, sister Kiyoko Shimizu. brother George (Edith) Kotow, sister-in-law Tomiko Nakayama. sister·in-Iaw Rose KOlOw, sister Julia Nakasone and brother-in·law Howard Okano: his four granddaughters. Jennifer. Karina. Jacqueline. and 1.lIaine: and his four grandsons. Alexander. Kenneth. Kyle. and Rayee: and many nieces and "o:phcws.
