This is the fifth Event Point published in English. Our aim is to promote Portugal as a Meetings Industry destination to the international community. Here you will be invited to get to know the potential of this country, the venues, the PCOs, the DMCs and all the other necessary services, people and novelties that made it possible for Portugal to be one of the most popular European meetings destination. On the pages of this magazine you will read reports, opinions and news which will give you a perhaps surprising image of the destination - well beyond the sun and sea cliché. We at Event Point believe in the qualities of Portugal as a destination - although we are aware that perfection does not exist.

We challenge you to take this journey with us, a journey of

discovery within the country that, over 500 years ago, gave

birth to and propelled the process of globalisation.

ICCA'S IBERIAN CHAPTER ANNUAL MEETING WITH RECORD ATTENDANCEIt was a sunny Algarve which so well hosted the 2015 edition of the Annual Meeting, General Assembly and Client/supplier Workshop of the Iberian Chapter of ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association). The Epic Sana Algarve was the event's headquarters that brought together the Portuguese and Spanish ICCA members. Alexandra Torégão, who said goodbye to the Chapter presidency after two years of leadership, could not be more pleased with the congress outcome, the most attended ever, with 86 delegates. "People were very satisfied with the entire organisation, with all the professionals, the destination, the Tourism Association of the Algarve together with all sponsors did an excellent job, the Epic Sana Algarve hotel was fantastic, and also with the educational programme that had great speakers" said Alexandra Torégão. “It was also remarkable the support of other local sponsors, namely Buzz, AVK, Eurologistix, AIM Group, NAU Hotels, TAP, Quinta dos Vales and the city of Albufeira”, she added, “with the president of the municipality, Carlos Silva e Sousa, welcoming all the participants”.

NEXT DESTINATION: MARBELLAIn 2016, the event, which alternates between Portugal and Spain, heads to Marbella on the Costa del Sol. OPINION

THERE IS A DIFFERENT PORTUGAL FOR EVERY TASTEIt all started in 1999. Enjoying a holiday it just struck me how good I felt. I believe that everyone has that certain spot where you will feel comfortable and for me it was Portugal. It took only a few days for my husband and I to take the decision to change our life 180º and we set up the company. Now, after fifteen years, I cannot imagine living and working anywhere else. I like the people, I love the way of life, the diversity, the culture and the amazing food.

Each destination is different from the other, but for me selling the destination Portugal is such a joy, as no other country in Europe can offer different products, different landscapes with different micro climates and, thanks to the short distances in this country, we can reach quickly all the different destinations. It is generally understood that world capitals are the best for business events. For larger events Lisbon can compete with any other major city, but Portugal’s second city, Porto, is coming up strongly. The city has the most versatile congress centre, the Alfandega, which received the IAPCO Best National Supplier 2014 award. My recommendations also include Estoril and Cascais with excellent venues, but I do not forget the Algarve, the centre and Alentejo. We decided to establish our office in Azeitão, 25 km south of Lisbon where we are surrounded by wineyards, close to the National Park Arrábida and Setúbal, where we can take the ferry to Tróia, the long peninsula with beaches starting to be a rival to the Algarve. The key is to identify the preference and to advise the client to the

most suitable destination. With such a variety of options, there is something in Portugal for each and it gives such a pleasure proposing and knowing that it will be hard not to find that ideal destination and venue for our client. The focus is also to offer the widest possible choice of services, so the client can pick up “à la carte” and choose what suits them best in terms of operation and budget. We provide the advice, something the internet cannot provide. Once we can get the client over to Portugal for a site inspection, they fall in love, just as I did. What I enjoy the most about the job is the variety of it all, meeting the people, attending events, seeking out new businesses, our staff and, mind you, I love budgeting and accounting. Retaining good business relationships in our business is always the turnkey to success.Having accumulated over 25 years of experience in the international event business, my acquired experience enables me to transfer my knowledge to the client and to our staff. As the company grows, so I hope does the knowledge.

FOCUS ON

MEO ARENA CORPORATE EVENTSThis is the new identity of the brand that identifies the MEO Arena team dedicated to

the meetings industry, corporate events and conferences segment.

As Jorge Vinha da Silva, CEO of Atlântico SA, owner of the space, explains, this is the culmination of two years of hard work, trying to capture more and more national and international events in this area, perhaps less visible than major public events as concerts and other performances."The meetings industry has always been important in our turnover," assures Jorge Vinha da Silva. "We believe in proactivity, which makes us all together to get more events to Lisbon". For this reason, they have invested in attending major international trade exhibitions such as IMEX in Frankfurt or IBTM World [former EIBTM] in Barcelona, and in cooperating with other organisations in the region as the Turismo de Lisboa (Tourism of Lisbon) or FIL (International Lisbon Exhibition).

This Corporate Events team is composed of seven permanent people. Behind their work, there is the support of the remaining MEO Arena structure, from commercial support to production, from marketing to creativity and audiovisual, in a wide range of equipment and services "tested on over a thousand events."

“We don't aim at being an event agency”

Jorge Vinha da Silva insists on this point. "Our competitors are other venues, at most. We want everyone to come organise events in MEO Arena and we are here to help, either the agencies or the final customers."

One of the greatest events in the world returns to Lisbon, in what is the only stop in a European capital. The passage of the Volvo Ocean Race in Lisbon in 2015 represents a joint investment of about four million euros for Urban Wind, the company responsible for organising the event, the Lisbon City Council and the Association of the Lisbon Port."This passage through Lisbon puts Portugal on the world sail scenario, promoting our tourism, our economy and our culture," says José Pedro Amaral, Volvo Ocean Race Lisbon Stopover Director and responsible for organising the event in Portugal in both 2014/2015 and 2017/2018 editions. "We have, for this event, a very clear ambition: to renew the connection between Portugal and the Portuguese people with the sea and to be the best and the biggest stopover ever in the history of Volvo Ocean Race," he adds. The organisation aims to reach 500 thousand

visitors. The presentation of the event took place in the Town Hall in the Grand Hall of the Municipality of Lisbon, and unanimously the Head of Host Port Operations, Adolfo Rodriguez, the mayors of Oeiras and Lisbon, and João Pedro Amaral, Stopover Director, reported the importance of Volvo Ocean Race for tourism and the economic impact on the destination.

THESE SECTORS ARE LEADING THE WAY

CORKPortugal has the world's largest extension of cork oaks, totalling 730,000 hectares (equivalent to 730,000 football pitches). Portugal is the world's leading exporter of cork stoppers, but the cork applications are wider: building materials, clothing, shoes, leather goods, furniture.According to the Cork Information Bureau, the cork industry in Portugal is spread over several districts, but the lion's share is concentrated in Aveiro. In 2012, there were about 600 companies to intervene in this sector. Information from the Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity, 2012, cited by APCOR - Portuguese Cork Association, indicates the production of arout 40 million corks per day, 35 million of them in the north. Thus, Portugal is the country that exports cork the most, followed from afar by neighbouring Spain.

CORK ROUTE

Those wishing to discover more about cork can travel to the Algarve, more specifically to São Brás de Alportel region, and complete the Cork Route. HE BRINGS MUSIC TO FOOTBALLIn a country mad about football, there has been some time now that João Ricardo Pateiro's live football commentaries have become a phenomenon. In 2012, he won an award from the television channel ESPN Brasil for "best live commented goal in the world."

JOÃO RICARDO PATEIRO | JOURNALIST

Page 15: Event Point Portugal 05

15

He is probably the most famous live commentator of football matches in Portugal. With a very unique style, which combines the rigour that a narration requires with the pageantry and excitement inherent in football, Pateiro stands out from all others at the goal moment. When the goal is scored, besides screamimg goooooooooooooooal, João Ricardo Pateiro sings a song or a jingle, with adapted lyrics dedicated to the player who scored it. The idea came via a colleague in TSF radio, where he works, knowlegeable of Pateiro's taste for singing. " João Paulo Menezes challenged me to adapt lyrics to players at the time of the goals. I thought about that and then did the first one for Falcão [FC Porto player, at the time]," he tells Event Point. And the first time he got a song, Falcão scored four goals.... "I sang the song four times in the same game. It was very catchy and the impact was great in terms of social networks, it became almost viral. After that, people began to request songs for other players." And it never stopped. Nowadays, most players already have their music and lyrics. The lyrics come to him very naturally. "I do not overthink them, usually they come to my mind while I am driving, or when I'm at the beach or sightseeing, often when I'm alone," he confesses. He hardly ever improvises. "It's usually something prepared. I remember having improvised Fernando's song [FC Porto player], who scored a great goal in Guimarães and Aboubakar's [also a FC Porto player], in the match against the Basel team. But it is rare because improvisation is risky," he admits. On Youtube, the reader can find dozens of examples of live commentaries by this journalist who, in a year, makes an average of 80 matches. But the passion for reporting remains well alive. "My struggle, what I want to achieve, is to join the best of both worlds, I think it is not impossible to have the spectacular side along the rigour and professionalism one," he highlights. That is why he believes it's reductive to look only at the singing part of his work, although it was that which caught more media attention. "I understand that this has put my work in the spotlight, but it is much more than that," he warns. In 2012, ESPN Brazil gave him the prize of "best live commented goal," with a goal by João Moutinho. This beyond borders recognition left him "very happy".Today, he is invited by companies to lectures where he shares his experience and the stories that he has accumulated in recent years related to journalism and football. And also to somehow motivate employees. He, who had the courage to do things differently and to persevere.Football forces him to travel a lot, but he guarantees that he always misses Portugal. Food, fabulous wines, the Portuguese sun, the friendliness of the people. "Another spectacular thing about this country is its diversity, a small country, but very different: we have beaches, lowlands, some mountains, a bit of snow, a huge coast. We have beautiful islands, the most beautiful I know."

THE YEATMAN SWIMMING POOL CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR IN THE WORLD

This title was awarded by The Telegraph, in an article which highlighted seven captive pools located all over the world, from Chile to the Maldives, from Las Vegas to Porto, including Costa Rica, Zambia and also India. The Yeatman Hotel swimming pool is the only one in Europe to be included in the article. The newspaper highlights the panoramic view of the city of Porto, the shape of the pool and the available wine list at the bar that supports it.

PORTUGAL HAS ONE OF THE TOP 10 LESSER‑KNOWN RUINS

The ranking was established by The Guardian and classifies the Conimbriga ruins, in central Portugal, in the top 10 lesser-known ruins. The newspaper points out that in Conimbriga (Condeixa-a‑Nova) lies one of the greatest legacies that the Romans left in Portugal. “It was a prosperous town in Roman times and, while not the largest Roman city in Portugal, it is the best preserved. Although only a small section of the site has been excavated, there are baths, luxurious houses, an amphitheatre, a forum, shops, gardens with working fountains and city walls to explore, with many wonderful mosaics still in situ. In its centre, there is one of the largest houses discovered in the western Roman empire, the Casa de Cantaber, which is built around ornamental pools in superb colonnaded gardens and has its own bath complex and heating system”.In this list also feature the ruins of Koh Ker, in Cambodia; the Inca city of Choquequirao, in Peru; Ani, in Turkey; Han Yangling, in China; Pella, in Jordan; the necropolis of the Vatican in Italy; Takht-e Soleyman, inIran; Fatehpur Sikri, in India; and Pula, in Croatia.© DIEGO BIS

CONVENTUAL SWEETSUnique in the world, the first and the richest of Europe, the Portuguese convent sweets were born of the boldness that we had to "mate" sugar and egg yolks. We have shaped their shapes and taste and we have an extensive inventory of traditional sweets. Today it is not easy to choose the one that will be the best company for a tea or a wine. And Portugal is so rich with fortified wine to combine!

Precious and greedily appreciated everywhere, the conventual sweets were born of the sensitivity and boldness of skilled hands, which nicely and with all the time in the world knew how to combine products that were at hand with plenty of others. Egg yolks, remaining from the whites used to iron and whiten the nuns clothes, and sugar, the main ingredient that was responsible for the emergence of this sweet chapter of Portugal and its over 900 year-old history. In abundance and very cheap, sugar arrived to Portugal in the middle of the 16th century, after the exploring of sugar cane from Brazil. Until then, it was exceedingly expensive, although used during the Moorish occupation. They were called infidels but we

inherited many sweets from them, however, neither as sweet nor as sophisticated as those created and refined in the places they would get their name after, the convents. These were places that once received not only girls and ladies for reasons of faith and dedication to religious life, but also women not finding wealthy marriage to their social standing. In the convents, they entered with their good dowries and their maids. The maids probably were the ones who, having all the time in the world and already accustomed to cooking in sophisticated environments, created and perfected the new desserts using refinement products: sugar and lots and lots of egg yolks, supposedly, those extras from the whites used for ironing and whitening the religious clothings.

Over time, shapes and tastes were perfected and other ingredients added, such as almonds and sweetmeat. What is certain is that these wise hands brought to Earth the flavours from heaven: “papos-de-anjo”, “orelhas-de-abade”, “barrigas-de-freira”, “toucinho-do-céu” and many others with names of saints. All of those with secret recipes that throughout the ages and places were so many times revealed. Because sometimes the recipes were not written but spoken, they would assume different variations from place to place and also different names according to the place where they were made. Because of that, Portugal won the “toucinho-do-céu” from Guimarães, which is different from Murça's and several others from Alentejo.

But this is good! For our palate and

our history!

NORTHERN PORTUGAL: DISCOVERING THE TERRA FRIA ROUTEIt is perhaps one of the most forgotten regions in terms of tourism in Portugal. But there's a tourism product, formatted, offering accommodation and tourist activities: the Trás-os-Montes Terra Fria (literally Cold Land) Route.

The region of Terra Fria is located in northeastern Portugal (Trás‑os-Montes), and includes five municipalities: Bragança, Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Vimioso and Vinhais. This region has benefited in recent years from new road infrastructure, so it is possible to get from Porto to Vinhais in about two hours. The Montesinho Natural Park is an authentic jewel of the region, a protected area characterized by great geological and climatic diversity, and therefore habitat for many plant and animal species. And speaking of weather, here you can experience extremes, with a very cold winter (and spring and autumn) and a very hot summer, so the words "nine months of winter and three of hell" we heard more than one person say, fits like a glove. However, the cold that qualifies this land is only physical. Here we feel embraced by the warmth of people, who are welcoming, kind and genuine, with their house doors open to everyone.Tourism, especially linked to nature, ecotourism and rural tourism, has growth potential in these areas, as part of the space is protected area (about 55% of the territory), but also cultural and event tourism can expand. The monumental and ethnographic

heritage, along with a schedule of events, festivities with great connection to the traditions and characteristics of this region, have brought more people to this geography.

RIO DE ONOR AND MONTESINHO VILLAGESIt is often said that travellers look for experiences. Rio de Onor is an experience in itself. This is because this is the last stronghold of community life in Portugal. Here villagers still share ovens and farmlands, where everyone works in turns. Being a border area, it is not uncommon to hear Spanish, because communities in both sides of the border are almost one and only community. Montesinho is one of the most typical villages in Trás-os-Montes and one of the gateways into the Natural Park. As a curiosity, it was the first village in the North to be entirely lit by LED technology.

EATING WELLIf there is anything unquestionable to Portuguese people is that in Trás-os-Montes you eat well. The offer is wide, of high quality and varied, with a strong focus on meat and smoked sausages. Especially because this region has a large swine and traditional smokehouse production. Also noteworthy are the dishes based on chestnuts, a very important product in the region. In conclusion: a paradise for those who love the small pleasures of life.

WHERE TO STAY?The Terra Fria Route online platform (www.rotaterrafria.com) combines various possibilities with respect to accommodation. A very interesting alternative is to stay in Vinhais Biological Park, right in Montesinho Natural Park. The equipment, whose main function is that landscape interpretation, is owned by the city. It also offers comfortable bungalows (with two, three ou four rooms) and a range of facilities and activities for tourists: swimming pool, playground, bicycles, equestrian centre, hiking, donkey rides, among others. You can also be in contact with the various park animals: cows, wild boars, pigs, donkeys, roe deer, among many others. Another lodging solution is the Hospedaria do Parque, but it is more suitable for groups, although it has two double bedrooms. There is also offer in terms of local accommodation, including several options in Montesinho Village.

EVENTS AND ENTERTAINMENTThe Vinhais Festa do Fumeiro (Smokehouse Feast) is probably one of the events that brings more people to the area. Since 1981, it takes place on the second weekend of February and is a show of smoked sausages and other reginal products, crafts, etc. There are still lots of music and various activities. The Chestnut Fair, also in Vinhais, is set to market the product directly, but also as a means of promoting the many different uses of these nuts. But the most traditional festivals in this region are the Carnival and the Festa dos Rapazes (Boys Party). The latter is an initiatory rite of passage for young men into adulthood. The boys wear colourful masks - examples of these masks can be found in the Museu Ibérico da Máscara e do Traje (Iberian Museum of Masks and Costumes) in Bragança - and involve all the people in their celebration, which takes place between Christmas and 6th January.

FOUR FORMATTED GETAWAYSThey can be found at www.rotaterrafria.com, an online platform where you can customize your stay according to your needs. There is a specific programme for each season, with appropriate activities for each time of the year.
