After that the section has been restructuring and, therefore, the year of 2014/2015 has become a big task for us. After an amazing beginning of semester by creating and joining fantastic events with our great Erasmus students we look forward to host the ESNOlympics as it will be our main test of the semester.

We accepted this challenge with a mix of enthusiasm and conscience of responsibility. ESNOlympics is the first National event that the new ESN Coimbra will be organising. For that reason we are trying to prepare an event that can make the whole ESN, the city of Coimbra and all the Erasmus students proud of being a part of it.

We are all looking forward to hear the whistle. Let the matches begin! Thank you all, - ESN Coimbra

4WELCOME BY ESN COIMBRA

coimbra

Coimbra, The Students City

Coimbra, known as the Students City, is located in the centre of Portugal with around 150.000 inhabitants where around 20.000 of them are students. The city has good transport facilities which provide easy access to airports and beaches, such as Figueira da Foz and Tocha.

The city has an extraordinary History as well as several important archaeological remains, fado and other important stories such as Pedro and Ins forbidden love affair. With an exciting nightlife, the daily life is marked by students with or without their so-called Harry Potter capes, coming and going back from their lectures, stopping on the way to chat with friends, gossiping and discussing University issues in some of the Praa da Repblica or S Velha pubs.

The Historical Centre of Coimbra is divided into two main areas, where your hostels are located:

Alta upper town is the eldest part which consists of steep narrow cobbled streets, where the Repblicas (typical communal student residences) are to be found, as well as some of the citys most important monuments: S Velha, S Nova and the University of Coimbra.

Baixa lower town where most of the citys traditional commercial activity is concentrated. It is well known by its small and labyrinthic streets with old houses. By the Mondego River, the Monastery of Santa Cruz and several medieval churches can easily be found.

The city has grown to other residential areas, such as Celas, Vale das Flores and Solum - where the ESNOlympics will take place.

6Coimbra

What to visit during your stay?

The top 5 Coimbra Attractions are:

1. University of Coimbra and Pao das EscolasFounded in 1290, it holds Biblioteca Joanina, the famous University library which is richly decorated with exotic wood in green, red and gold. The library now operates as a museum with an amazing collection of about 300,000 volumes. It was recently recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.

7

2. Botanical Garden Jardim BotnicoCreated by the Marquis of Pombal, Botanical Garden is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Portugal, covering an area of up to 13 acres.

3. Machado de Castro MuseumIt is one of the most important art museums in Portugal, containing Roman material from excavations, medieval sarcophaguses, Romanesque and Gothic sculpture in stone and wood, goldsmiths work, furniture, tapestries, porcelain and paintings.

Coimbra

4. S Velha Coimbra Old CathedralThe Cathedral dates back from the reign of King Afonso Henriques and is built on Romanesque style, which was popular at that period in Coimbra. It is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Portugal.

8Coimbra

5. Mosteiro de Santa Clara a VelhaLocated on the left bank of Mondego River, it is another beautiful representation of the Romanesque. It was built as a convent for nuns which were not allowed to speak, and was house of the citys patroness Rainha Santa Isabel on her last years. Because of the monastery being built on a lower level than the rivers it has been underwater for a large number of years, but after another large years of research and water pumping and restoration work it has become what you can see nowadays.

USEFUL INFORMATION

10Useful Information

What to bring?

Towels Things can get wet in here!

Flippers We do not want you to catch a cold

A warm jacket The weather is sneaky

Umbrella So that you can sing in the rain, like Gene Kelly!

ESNcard Share the greatest experiences with your best friend

Sports equipment Do not forget your trainers!

Pijamas The more colorful it is, the comfier it gets

5 for the Hostels cautionYou are a good kid, you will get them back

Outfit for Saturdays dinner and party Cause nothing suits you like a suit

GOOD SPIRIT, FAIRPLAY AND A LOT OF FUN!

Venues

Accommodation and Registration There are three ESN sections (Covilh, UTAD and Minho) staying in Residencial Moeda, which is located right in Coimbras downtown and near to the city centre.
