record for parents in which they can enter the names of
all the books they read with their child. Brochures are available at the library with further

Not flexible enough for yoga? This
class is for you! Yoga will not only build
your flexibility, it is also good for
strengthening your muscles, bone density,
stress reduction, and increasing oxygen in
the body by learning to breathe properly. In

yoga from the very beginning with learning
the proper way to breathe and then
approaching the asana (poses) in a safe
manner. Afterward you will have the opportunity of choosing to
continue your yoga practice by choosing from a number of
different styles of classes offered in my studio! I will offer
modifications where needed.
Dance fitness classes that are fun, energetic, and make you feel amazing!! Zumba takes the 'work' out of workout, by
mixing low intensity and high intensity moves for an interval style, calorie burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin

Ayurveda is an ancient
healing modality from
India. It is based on the
principle that every-
thing is composed of 5
elements; ether(space), air, fire, water, and earth. These 5
elements are grouped into 3 energies or Doshas; Vata, pitta,
and Kapha. Each of us contains all 3 energies with us but we
generally have 1 or 2 that are more predominant, and this
helps to form who we are and how we react to the world. In
this class we will learn more about what Doshas are primary
for us, and how we can use this information to understand
and improve our health. We will also explore some simple
Ayurvedic daily practices to use to support our health.

Come walk our Halls this Fall and Winter! Being physically
active can be challenging at the best of times, let alone during
the colder, darker days of late fall and winter. A key success
factor is that there are no barriers to participating because
everyone is welcome! There are no limitations or require-
ments other than during the school day, you just need to buzz
in (this is new) at either the HS Door #4 or Community Ed
Office Door #8) then stop into either office to pick up a
walking badge during the school day (8am-3:20pm). No
badge is required between 3:20pm-10pm. A list of walking
distances is listed on the bulletin board in the CE Office. The
Walking Club program turns often empty halls into a bustling
‘place to be’ – building on community spirit while at the
same time improving physical activity levels.
Don’t forget to help yourself to a cup of coffee
from our Keurig in the Community Ed Office
after your walk.

Enrichment
This class is for those who have never played
bridge and for those who might have tried it
and said I can’t pick it up that fast. The class
will meet ten times between October 24th –
December 8th. The first night will be a chance
for people to find more out about bridge and
determine the time and day of the week that works best for those in
attendance. There is no obligation after the first evening to sign up for
the class. This class will meet 9 more times to learn the basics of the
game at a pace that has worked well in previous classes. Individuals
that elect to take the class after the first session will register through
the Paynesville Community Education. For more information about
the class, contact Marv at 507-829-5008 or [email protected]
Why learn to play bridge? Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit. Bridge is
one of the best “Mind Boosters” because it stimulates both sides of
your brain; It is social; It is a bargain (you just need three other people
and a deck of cards); and, the most important—”It is Fun.”

We Are Thankful for 25 Years!
In celebration and thanksgiving of 25 years of service to this
community, the Paynesville Area Center will be hosting an
open house on Saturday October 22nd. The open house will
begin at 3 pm with a program at 4pm. A free will turkey
dinner will follow the program and be served until 6:30 pm.
Bring your families and see how the Center has evolved over
25 years but continues to serve the Paynesville Community.
There are still several individuals that were involved with the Center when it was just a
dream living in the community. These individuals who served on the first Board of
Directors are Mary Janotta and Judy Savage. The Don Torbenson family was also
greatly involved. I have heard many times that the Center would not be here without
Don’s relentless efforts. The original board and volunteers also kept an amazing history
of the center thanks to the efforts of a gal names Bertha Lang. Gloria Ringstad did all
the typing for the 11 volumes of history that we have. These volumes include
everything that happened in the planning of the center in the early days to the
fundraiser’s and programs that happened through 1997.
The original board consisted of one member from each of the surrounding townships as
well as the cities of Roscoe, Regal, Lake Henry, St Martin & Paynesville along with a
representative from the city and 3 at large delegates. This was for a total of 17
members. Having representation in all these areas was a great idea and one which I
wish we could still say we accomplished. Today we have only 12 board members plus 1
staff person. We are grateful when we get someone to agree to be on the board, much
less being able to choose where they live.
Over the 25 years there have been 15 different presidents and 103 different board
members. There are still 7 former Board Presidents living in the community. They are
in order of service: Urban Fuchs, Mike Braun, John Horn, Dan Elliott,
Darrell Voorhees, Linda Musel and current board chair Lloyd Eggert.
Without all these individuals, as well as those that use the center, there would be
nothing to celebrate or be thankful for. See you on October 22!

Greetings from the Area Center Director,
Volunteers continue to be the strength of the Area Center and all the organizations that are under the
Green Roof. Without their dedication and hard work there would not have been any fishing outings this
summer, no Meals on Wheels would have been delivered, many seniors would not have gotten to their
doctor’s appointments and the lawns at the Center and many around town would be really tall. This is just
a few of the things that volunteers make possible. Employees are only here to coordinate all these needed
activities. Volunteers make it happen! So thank you for making my job possible. I can only imagine how
many staff it would take to replace all the hours that volunteers put in. We have been truly blessed by
very dedicated volunteers. I think of Willie and Gloria Scheel who have delivered over 13,000 meals on
wheels over the past 13 years along with helping with well over 100 fundraisers. Please consider
becoming a small part of our success. Even a few hours a week, can make a huge difference in someone’s
life.
There are two very special events being planned over the next few months. One is of course the 25th
Anniversary Celebration on October 22. We will be honoring those who helped make this happen 25
years ago as well as those who continue to make it happen. The other event is the Dancing with the
Paynesville Stars Event that is happening at the High School Auditorium on Sunday September 18th at
2 pm. Please join us for one or both of these events. The Dancing with the Stars event is to raise money
for a handicap van that has been needed in this community for quite some time. We have been so
fortunate to have had access to the van that Arnie Minette donated in 2013. It has made many trips to
doctor appointments, special family events and even funerals. The van has many health issues of its own
and really needs to be replaced. We are dreaming big and hoping to raise enough dollars to purchase a
new van with a lift. This van would be available to the community for the uses I mentioned earlier with
the use of volunteer drivers. Please come support us on September 18 or consider being a sponsor of the
event or just making a donation. All donations are tax deductible. Cost of a new handicap van is about
$60,000.
We continue to strive to offer programs and activities for the enjoyment and education of area residents.
The Center belongs to the community. Please let me know if there is something that you would like
offered to area seniors or to the general public as a whole.

HEALTH HELPS # 106 HEALTHY EATING GUIDE
SEPTEMBER 2016 R.J. LINDEMAN, M.D.
Let’s pretend we could learn something new today that may be helpful in our daily eating habits or
maybe just be reminded that we might do better. O.K.?
Research has shown that by adopting some better eating habits we can greatly impact our health,
prevent illnesses, better treat deficiencies and attack a serious and growing problem----OBESITY!
It is important to know that nearly half of all adults have an ailment that has been caused by the type
and amount of food we eat! Ailments like high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, hardening of the
arteries and numerous intestinal ailments are but to mention a few.
What can we do to improve our dietary program.
1.Limit added sugar in any form-sucrose, glucose, fructose, lactose, honey, etc.
2. Don’t worry about dietary cholesterol.
3. Keep saturated and trans fats in check but don’t worry about healthy fats.
4. Enjoy 3-5 cups of coffee a day.
5. Adopt a daily healthy eating pattern.
6. Focus on variety, variety of foods and AMOUNT!
7. Limit calories from added sugars, saturated fats and limit sodium (salt).
8. Avoid carbonated beverages of any kind.
9. Become more knowledgeable about foods and their nutritional value.
10. Make mealtime a pleasant time and turn off the TV or the radio news. Research has shown that a diet rich in certain foods can actually improve your brain function that is affected with aging, and
reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s.
These “brain healthy” foods include----
Green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, NO WHITE BREAD, fish, poultry, olive oil and if
so inclined , a glass of red wine daily.
Foods to eat sparingly or eliminate---
Red meats, butter and stick margarine, cheese, pastries and sweets, fried or fast foods.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT---
1.Keep nuts and berries handy for snacks instead of chips, crackers or sweets.
2. Start lunch and dinner with a salad and a generous amount of vegetables.
3.Try grilled fish and chicken instead of frying.
4. Stick to whole grain bread with a little olive oil instead of white bread and butter.
5. Toss a can of your favorite (rinsed) beans over a salad.
6. Opt for berries for dessert instead of ice cream, pastries or sweets.
7. Use frozen berries in smoothies and yogurt and add thawed berries to cereal.
I KNOW YOU WON’T DO THEM ALL, BUT, LIKE WITH EXERCISE, A LIMITED AMOUNT BEATS
NONE AT ALL. p.s. This is a true HELP YOURSELF HEALTH HELPS!

PAYNESVILLE SENIOR DINING
Fun facts about Minnesota: Minnesota has 90,000 miles of shoreline, more than California, Florida
and Hawaii combined. Minnesota’s water flow outward in three directions: north to Hudson Bay in Canada,
east to the Atlantic Ocean, and south to the Gulf of Mexico.
With fall quickly approaching we have some things to look forward to: Homecoming Day lunch in
September, Harvest Day in October as well as Halloween, Safari Day in November and Thanksgiving too! There will be many
reasons to celebrate and we might just come up with a few more along the way.
All year long we always have Pie Day the 1st Wednesday and Birthday Celebration the 1st Friday of each month.
Now that summer is coming to a close if you have some extra time on your hands and want to stay active and
help out in your own community, we are always looking for people to work as “Host” and “Meals on Wheels Drivers”. This
doesn’t take a lot of time but it is a warm fuzzy for those that do help out. We have a lot of people in our community, Belgrade
and Brooten who aren’t able to get out and do their own shopping and cook their own meals. Here is your chance to help!
Also, if you or/and your loved one or friend would benefit from coming into the Senior Center for a nutritious and good meal at
lunch time, we’re here for you. As we age, socialization is huge! We have a wonderful group of people that love to visit and
socialize, it helps to get out and stay connected. Come on out and give us a try!

left and could say, I used everything you gave me. ~Emma Bombeck~
