have dropped, but food bank requests have escalated. Treena Mielke File Photo

Food bank usage almost doubleslast year’s count

Startling evidence of the hard times that have fallen upon Albertans can be found on the empty shelves of the Rimbey food bank as more and more people are being forced to turn to outside help to feed themselves and their hun-gry families.

Katherine Winter, food bank co-ordinator said the requests for hampers has almost doubled, noting last year at this time about 12 or 15 hampers were sent out monthly compared to as many as 30 needed this year.

Each hamper contains about fi ve to seven days of food.

Peggy Makofka, executive director of Rimbey and dis-trict FCSS said people ac-cessing the food bank vary.

“We have lots of fami-lies and young singles who have no work.”

She said hard times have fallen on many people, but those who worked on a contract basis or had their

BY TREENA MIELKE own companies are es-pecially vulnerable to the economic downturn as they have no unemploy-ment insurance benefi ts.

Most recipients come from the Rimbey area, although they have had some individuals apply with ‘no fi xed address.’

The Rimbey food bank,

which exists solely through donations and volun-teers, receives food from donations that have been dropped off at the Co-op or through cash donations which can be taken to the FCSS offi ce in the provin-cial building.

The food bank, which also has a membership

with Food Banks Canada and Alberta Food Banks, can access some food through those groups.

“We have been doing that for about four years,” said Makofka. “Food is picked up in Edmonton or Calgary.”

Presently the food bank is low on milk and canned

fruit and vegetables. Flour, rolled oats and meals in a can are also needed.

All food is gratefully ac-cepted, but expired items can not be used due to health regulations. Items which are expired are taken to the soup kitchen where it is determined if they are salvageable and can be used in soups.

Makofka said the FCSS

board is keeping a close eye on the food bank to ensure demand doesn’t ex-ceed the supply.

Volunteers are always needed for FCSS programs such as the food bank, meals on wheels and the volunteer income tax pro-gram.

Volunteers are screened and need to complete a criminal record check.

“Mom, I have a favour to ask you!”

As the mother of three adult children, all of whom have spouses and children and busy days crammed from border to border with ‘to do’ stuff, I am well aware that sometimes this stuff spills over into the category of “too much.”

That’s why when I get the 9-1-1-mom/grandma calls, I’m not too surprised.

As usual, I get such a call when I’m sitting at my cluttered desk in my clut-tered offi ce struggling with the challenge of having an uncluttered mind.

I have the phone cra-dled on my left shoulder, a pen in my left hand and a notebook in front of me. I’m ready…..for what I’m not sure, but I’m ready.

“Of course,” I respond automatically. “How can I help?”

“Well, I need you to

Refl ections of acelebrity judge

Snow could be weirdly exotic to some people

I live in a weird place. I’m not actually talking specifi cally about Rimbey, though Rimbey is its own weird little place—in a good way. I’m talking about living in Alberta and particularly living each year through four discernable seasons.

judge a poetry contest at my school. I want you to be the celebrity judge.”

“Really, a celebrity judge,” I muse, and imme-diately the little thought fl ashed into my mind, quick as a lightening bug. “She meant to call some-one else.”

“Me?”“Yes, mom,” she said pa-

tiently. “You! Can you do it?”

“Well, of course,” I reply. “I would love to.”

And so it came to be that last Thursday I found myself outside the school where my daughter teach-es Grade 8. Although it was early, I must admit to being amazed at the hub of activity that was already happening.

It was like the world and everyone in it suddenly got very busy because the bell was going to ring at any minute.

Kids were all over the place, kind of like the pieces of a moving patch-work quilt. In between the pieces were cars and school buses and in be-tween those pieces were the adults.

That’s where I fi t in. The adult. The celebrity judge.

I found my way inside the front door and fi nally to the front desk where I was greeted by the teacher (my daughter) and one of her students (my grand-daughter). Already feeling slightly overwhelmed and

somewhat less that celeb-rity like, I followed them to the band room (where the contest was held) and fi nally to the judges’ table.

They brought me coffee and also, because it was someone’s birthday, cake.

Slowly I began to relax and even feel a little more celebrity like.

Several students were al-ready milling about, going over their contest submis-sions, gathering in little groups, talking, giggling, and, every now and then, sneaking me quick looks, no doubt, to see if I was looking back.

I was.Suddenly, the bell rang

and the students arranged themselves in rows, their chatter momentarily lulled, their attention on the loud speaker.

As their attention shifted away from the upcoming contest, I faded into the background, becoming the observer, the noticer, the

fl y on the wall.I sipped my coffee slow-

ly. I was curious as to what would come next.

When they started their day with a short prayer and the singing of O’ Canada I was momentarily taken aback.

“I love this school,” I think, feeling a sudden rush of pride, mixed with a good dose of humility as I observed these students and the simple, respect-ful way they started their school day.

My daughter, the teach-er, then walked to the front of the room. She ex-plained the rules of the contest and then went on to talk about me, the ce-lebrity judge. She briefl y mentioned my career as an editor and a colum-nist, graciously leaving out any of my shortcomings, which would have taken far too long, anyway.

And then she said the thing that I am the most

proud of which is, without a doubt, my best accom-plishment ever.

“And she’s also my mom.”

The students clapped obligingly. And so the con-test began. One by one the students came to the front of the room. Some saun-tered, some came quick-ly, some kept their head down. Some walked, tall and straight. They were brave, they were fearful, they were shy, they were fl amboyant.

But they all came and once again I was hum-bled and impressed. The students’ work was di-verse, thoughtful, clever and original. It was deep, simple, funny, serious, poi-gnant, heartbreaking. All was fi lled with nuggets of wisdom, as seen through the eyes of the youth.

How to judge? Impossible!

To me they were all win-ners! Each and every one.

It’s too bad that win-ter has to last so long. Spring and fall seem to span over just the right amount of time, summer is too short, and well, winter seems to drag on forever like a rusty old tail pipe dragging under an old pickup truck. That’s one of the things about our winters: they last so long we lose sight of their exotic nature.

Snow is pretty exotic. Especially to those who have never actually ex-perienced snow before. In these parts exotic is usu-ally reversed for descrip-tions of vacations spent far away and in warm-er climates. I remember the fi rst time I was in California and saw a palm tree, I couldn’t stop look-

ing at them because I had never seen one before (ex-cept in the movies). I’m sure the employees at In and Out Burger thought I was half crazy sitting outside and staring up at the palm trees that grow in the small dirt plots in the parking lot.

Winter is the pits. There is snow, which can be great if you ski or like rid-ing snow machines, but there is no palm trees. I’m sure if you comb the feeds of some so-cial media websites you could fi nd a yahoo in a snowsuit chilling out in a hammock slung up be-tween two spruce trees. Hammocks are a good time, but I want mine in between a couple of palm trees: and maybe there is

a beach, an ocean, and a couple of coconuts within arm’s reach to complete the picture.

Sometimes I look up from my car, to take a moment from brushing off the snow, and peer at the birds sitting up in trees in the cold winter air. Those creatures can just take fl ight, fl ap hard enough, and end up in almost any climate better than ours. But they don’t. They just sit in the trees and watch a schmuck like me scrap the frost off his windshield and unplug the block heater cord.

Then again I guess I could get a plane ticket south, borrow a bicycle, fi nd a beach, and live out an existence consisting of coconuts, love, and a

lengthy subscription to a hammock. But like the birds, I put up with the snow, cold winter air, and wonder when I can put the snow brush away and tuck the block heater cord back under the hood.

That’s the realization I have about the weird place where I live—I like it here. I imagine I’ll get back down to California again, or even farther south where it’s manda-tory to have a little um-brella in the coconut you are drinking from. Maybe I’ll fl ap hard enough and end up in Australia, fi nd a burger joint, and stare at the kangaroos in the parking lot while I eat a burger garnished with beetroot and seasoned with Vegemite.

WCPS rejects inclusion request from

Rimbey Christian

Citing their own hard economic situation com-bined with a number of cost concerns, Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) has decided it will not ab-sorb an area independent school into its fold.

Earlier this year, the in-dependently operated Rimbey Christian School put forward a request to become part of Wolf Creek as an alternative educa-tion opportunity. As a re-sult, WCPS administration undertook a comprehen-sive review of the school - which included taking a look at everything from its fi nancial situation to bussing, staffi ng and the building.

That review was com-pleted and presented to the WCPS board of trust-ees at its meeting on Feb. 18, when the board went with the recommendation of superintendent Larry Jacobs to not go forward with taking on the school at this time.

Along with WCPS cur-rently in the midst of at-tempting to solve its own defi cit of more than $2 mil-lion, Jacobs concluded they would need to signifi cantly subsidize the operation of Rimbey Christian as well as inject a large amount of funds for a number of upgrades.

“Their special needs area is underfunded, we would need to extend our edu-cational psychologist to include them, they need upgrades in staff training especially on inclusion of special needs students into the regular classroom,” Jacobs told the board.

“The staff are paid on a different grid than our current staff so we would need to work directly with them on making the nec-essary adjustments. Also right now, they don’t pay for bussing and we provide it for free. They couldn’t afford a transportation in-frastructure, so that would need to be accommodat-ed.”

In addition, Jacobs ex-plained the technology in the school is extreme-ly out of date and would mean signifi cant spending to replace the entire sys-tem plus install new access points for the Internet; as well, there would need to be something worked out

BY JORDIE DWYERPONOKA NEWS

for use of a gymnasium as the school doesn’t have one.

The building is also in need of new windows, has no phone infrastructure like WCPS schools and a number of other mainte-nance work equirement since that work has so far been done on a purely vol-unteer basis.

“The facility is in need of a lot of work and their overall budget is only about $800,000, so that means parents and volunteers have been subsidizing it a lot,” said Jacobs.

“There is no upside for the board and in the short term, you would be on the hook for a considerable amount of money.”

Trustee Bob Huff was not enamoured with the thought in the fi rst place and the review just ce-mented his belief.

“It’s in competition with our current schools in Rimbey and I’m not sure it would even survive.”

Another trustee, Barb Walker, added that it isn’t prudent or a good choice for WCPS to take on anoth-er small school at this time.

Trustees then approved a motion to reaffi rm they remain with the status quo compliment of schools for the next school year.

Bluffton 4-H Club enjoying yearOn December 12 our club

helped with the Santa’s workshop at the Co-op. I know the children really enjoyed the help. We have also helped with Liberty Face Painting. Lots of peo-ple attended and it was nice that no one cried while having their face painted this year. We also

helped with The Home for Dinner program at the Ronald McDonald house. The families seemed to really enjoy the home cooked meal.

Our club has been doing many activities lately. On December 27 we had our toboggan party. We en-joyed going down the hill together. It was nice to have the skiidos pull us

back up the hill! Luckily no one was hurt this year!

We also enjoyed snacks around a fi re. It was a great

day, and all members who attended had lots of fun!

A few members attended Bull Congress on January 23. It was lots of fun to see old friends, and make new ones. The sessions were very helpful and mem-bers learned a lot. After judging, we all enjoyed pizza and icecream. Then we ran around complet-ing a scavenger hunt and

talking to people at their booths.

Many members also en-joyed the Senior Members Conference during the last weekend of January. Members participated in many games and team building activities. The members who went really enjoyed the weekend and met lots of new friends. It was also great to see old friends.

On January 9 we had our Club Public Speaking at the Lavesta hall. The speeches were very infor-mative and interesting. Everyone did a great job.

Placing were as follows; Juniors speeches; 1st Garren Skeels, 2nd Amy Vandenhoven, 3rd Ben Boyce, 4th Issac Stout. Intermediates speeches; 1st Tim Trenson, 2nd Lacey Burrage, 3rd Katie Hudson, 4th John Vandenhoven. Seniors speeches; 1st Sylvia Trautman, 2nd Ben Trenson, 3rd Mackenzie Skeels and 4th Leah Trenson. Intermediate presentations Annie Christiansen placed fi rst. Senior presentations Kaiden Eadie placed 1st and Carter Eadie 2nd! Thanks to the parents we had a delicious lunch. Thankyou to all the judges; Michelle VonGunten, Marj Strause, Allison Howdle, Morena Stamm, Friso Beeren, Shelly McFadden, Kevin Steeves, Ryan Howdle and Lysbeth Peter. We would like to thank the M.C Heidi Trenson. As Well, as the timer and tell-er Eric Vandenhoven and Marian Johnson. Thanks to the Stout family for the use of the hall.

On February 18 and 19, we had our First Aid course. Many members attended, both from the Rimbey multi club and our club. The fi rst day was for recertifying and both days were for the full course. It was very interesting and members learned a lot, es-pecially the ones taking it for the fi rst time. Members who took the recertifying course really enjoyed the refresher. Thank you to the donations from Farm Credit Canada, the club funds and the Rimbey Rodeo Board.

Upcoming events in-cluded a ski trip March 4, District Public Speaking March 6, District Multi Species Judging March 13, farm tour March 20, mini show April 24, and high-way clean up May 7. We are also excited about the upcoming multi club show and sale.

They will also go to the National museum of Natural History, the National muse-um of American History, the National Portrait Gallery, the National m museum of the American Indian and Smithsonian American Art

museum and the National Archives.

The trip will end with a visit to the International Spy Museum and the Holocaust Museum.

Teacher David Robertson said the students are excited about the trip.

“The excitement is increas-ing,” he said. “They are a great group of kids and they’ve

worked hard and done a lot offundraising.”He said the community and

the school board has been supportive.

He doesn’t believe inci-dents involving terrorism should mean such school trips should be discontinued.

“You can’t live in fear. You have to move forward,” he said.

West Country Outreach School students will take part in the Big City Lights trip later this month. In the back are Julia Hilliker, Liam McKeen, principal Alva Holliday, Aylish Anglin and Zak Ukranichuk. In the front are Sam Kercher, Mckenna Rider, teacher David Robertson, Megan Matthews and Ashley brassard. Missing are Cassidy Low and Kim Beierbach.

Refl ections of Grade 9 mission trip

Refl ection Grade 9 mis-sion trip

Thank you so much for all of you who supported our recent mission trip to Bucerias Mexico.

Grade 9 students and parents from Rimbey Christian School and our leaders from Withrow Gospel Mission had an op-portunity to work together with LaFuente Ministries.

It has been a blessing to us to see what God is doing in their lives. The enthusiasm and joy in their worship is conta-gious. Their reliance on prayer and see answered prayers is humbling. Their thankfulness for all they have been given would put us to shame.

LFM is a church planting organization that would like to establish living ef-fective churches in Mexico and throughout the world.

The church in Bucerias has four of those satellite churches in various stag-es of development: Punta de Mita, Santa Fe, Higuera Blanca and Bia Dorado. We were able to help out with their Saturday morning missions, did some paint-ing and general clean up. Most of our work was done at Higuera Blanca which was in need of a concrete fl oor. Upon arrival they had a gravel pad with a metal frame covered with a tarp for their church ser-vices. While we were there mainly the guys worked on preparing the site so the fl oor could be poured the day before we left.

One of our highlights was the reconstruction of Eric and Isabella’s home. Isabella has been faithful-ly serving at the church with outreach and Sunday school. Therefore her

BY JOHANNA VAN VELSEN family got chosen for a Mexican home make over. Their place was no big-ger than 12’ x30’, no walls were touching each other. Some of the roof tile were missing and the rest of the roof was supported by an I beam supported by cin-derblocks stacked on top of a non-working fridge. The family of four shared a queen size bed. When we began their belongings got stored at Isabella fa-ther’s house next door, the roof came off and it was

all business to rebuild the walls. All mortar had to be mixed by hand and carried inside in fi ve gallon pails. The next day we were planning to do the fl oor with the help of a cement mixer but unfortunately that didn’t start so it had to be mixed by hand as well. When everything was said and done they had a complete roof and walls, a new fl oor, a table and four chairs. Bunkbeds and a front door are on order.

Another highlight was our trip to Mascota, a rustic town of 12,000 two hours inland in the mountains. Mascota does not have a church be-sides the massive Catholic Church at the town square. After hurricane Patricia hit last October, Mascota and surroundings had a lot of dam-age and had asked LFM to help with the cleanup and the possibility of planting a new church. We were helping by building connections by painting a local school. We handed

out shoes, clothing and toques be-cause it is pretty cold there in the mountains. After completing the job we were introduced to some local people. One of them was a farmer who happened to have his 86th birthday. Pastor Fredy was able to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with him and he invited Jesus in his heart! Afterwards the farmer shared with Pastor Fredy that he had had a vision many years ago that a group of people would come and explain the Gospel to him.

We came to Mexico with the idea to bless these people which we did, but we got so much more in return that is really hard to describe.

It is our prayer that many more will have the opportunity to serve in missions. Although the plans have not been fi nalized yet, pastor Fredy and his wife Michelle might be coming to Canada mid-June to speak at Withrow Gospel Mission and/or the school.

If you would like more informa-tion or like to get involved please do not hesitate to contact us.

A full complement of 32 teams was entered in the Bentley / Sylvan Lake Senior’s Bonspiel this year. There were lots of familiar names and faces as many teams come back year after year.

It was all daytime curling as usual, but there were some changes. It was held February 8-12 instead of in January, and the format was completely different.

Instead of one big 32-team bonspiel that played out to four different event winners, the teams were placed into four different pools at the start with eight teams in each pool.

“It is more like four dif-ferent bonspiels running at the same time,” vol-unteer coordinator Ralph

Scarlett explained. “It has been done that way at some other rinks and seemed to work well.”

Teams entered into the Mixed A Division (one or more of opposite gen-der) sponsored by Servus Credit Union - Bentley, or the Mixed B Division (one or more of opposite gen-der) sponsored by Cecil Galloway of Lacombe, the Masters Division (grand aggregate minimum age of 26) sponsored by Toothill Holdings Inc. from Red Deer, or the Stick Division (two or more sticks) spon-sored by Finished in Wood from Eckville.

Every team played fi ve games (one each day) so there were never two games in one day and with no game for some on the Friday. All teams

MEETINGMEETING

In The Kinsmen Room

Each draw was for one set division, so no mixing of divisions and less confusion. There were payouts posted all along the way.

The fi rst games in each division were played to determine which half of the pool the team would play in. After every-one’s fi rst game there was a shoot-out sponsored by Healthy Herds, Bentley, with every team member throwing a rock to get as close to the button as possible and earn team points.

In case of a tie in wins/losses on the square drawn, the team with the most shoot-out points would be seeded fi rst.

Some of the results follow. Only the top two games of each division are listed here. All teams had a playoff game on Friday.

Mixed A:1st and 2nd: Bernard Merrick (Red Deer)

over Cliff Carson (Lacombe). Both teams had won all three of their round robin games.

3rd and 4th: Doug Gordon (Eckville) over

Chris Jenson (Lacombe). Both teams had won two round robin games.

Mixed B:1st and 2nd: Arnie MacKaskill (Lacombe)

over Tom Barker (Bentley/Sylvan). Both teams had won all three of their round robin games.

3rd and 4th: Dave Neufeld (Bentley/Sylvan) over Mary Vincent (Red Deer). Both teams had won two round robin games.

The teams were so evenly matched that all four of the top teams in both the Sticks and Masters had won two round robin games each so the Shoot-out points had to be used to seed them.

There was a banquet Thursday eve-ning in the Bentley ag centre catered by Rochelle’s Bakes & Cakes from the Cross-eyed Giraffe. One round of golf for four at Lacombe and one round of golf for four at Sylvan Lake and a leather jacket were raffl ed off.

The arena concession was open for three hours around noon each day and lots of food was available every day up-stairs in the lounge compliments the Bentley/Sylvan members.

It was very much a social event with less emphasis on the event winners.

KROSSA

Daniel James Krossa of Rimbey, Alberta, better known by everyone as ‘Dan’ or ‘Danny’, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Bentley Care Centre, Bentley on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the age of 60 years.Dan will be remembered for his caring nature, sense of humour, positive outlook, hard work and willingness to help others. He was always there for his friends and family, and always put others before himself. Dan was very much a family man, making many memories with his wife and two children. Spending his whole life in the Rimbey area, he knew just about everyone, and if he didn’t know you, he made a point of introducing himself as “Farmer Dan”, “The Tree Guy”,

or “the tall, good-looking one”. Dan’s sense of humour will be missed, as he treated everyone equally; giving everyone a ‘hard time’, as he would say. He was a friendly, outgoing guy with a smile for everyone. He was always positive and could brighten up anyone’s day. Dan enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, playing pool, going for coffee (although he drank tea instead), playing with his kids, and dancing with his wife. He was well-known for his work ethic as he worked many jobs over his short lifetime. In addition to farming, Dan drilled water wells, was a derrick hand, built trusses, did maintenance at the Lodge, and ran a hydrovac rig, but he was most known for painting, shingling and cutting trees. He was very good at everything he did and took a lot of pride in his work. Dan was a very generous person; any time anyone needed a hand, Dan was there. His community service included volunteering for the Rimbey Fire Department, sitting on the Forshee Hall Board, a short membership in the Rimbey Lions Club, and involvement with the Historical Society and the Beatty House. For many years, Dan was a dedicated volunteer with the Safe Drive program on New Year’s Eve. He was a long-time blood donor and an organ donor. He also assisted with many fundraising events for various organizations. Throughout his journey with dementia, although he lost mental and physical capacity, Dan retained his sense of humour and remained a caring person, and a loving husband and father. Dan will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Brenda; his son, Jason Krossa of Rimbey; and his daughter, Michelle Krossa of Eckville. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his mother, Annie Krossa of Rimbey; and his sister, Beverly Dorey (Ernie Hudon) of Swan Hills, Alberta; as well as many extended family members and close friends. Dan was predeceased by his dad, Henry in 2007.An Informal Gathering of Family and Friends was held in Dan’s Honour at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Rimbey on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Dan’s Memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. NELSON, Glen Roscoe1931 - 2016

Glen was born in Bentley, Alberta on April 20th 1931, the son of Frank and Doris Nelson. He died on February 26, 2016 in Red Deer Regional Hospital. He grew up on his parents’ farm in the Rainy Creek district, enjoying a happy childhood surrounded by his parents, four sisters, one brother, and a large extended family. He attended school at Rainy Creek and Red Deer. He played hockey all his young life and was chosen to play Junior A for the Bellevue Lions for two seasons. Glen was the fi rst player from Bentley to play major junior hockey. He then played with the Red Deer Monarchs and Bentley Senior team for a number of years and ended up playing Old Timer hockey on a team from Bentley and Rimbey appropriate-

ly named the “Bent Rims”. He married his high school sweetheart, Pearl Swainson in 1954. Glen, his dad, his brother Jim and later his son Brad operated a mixed farm in the Rainy Creek District. He and Pearl enjoyed raising their four children on their farm. The Bentley United Church and the community of Bentley were an integral part of Glen’s life. He was instrumental in the formation of the Gull Lake Gas Co-op and the building of the Bentley Arena. He was a delegate to the Alberta Wheat Pool for many years, served on the Lacombe Hospital Board and was a Lacombe County Councillor for nine years. Glen was honoured to accept the Golden Furrow Award on behalf of the Nelson Family in 2012. Glen was keenly interested in world affairs and Canadian politics. Fishing, hunting, enjoying nature, welding and building were some of his favourite pastimes. He was still building hopper bottom bins and delivering them using his homemade crane at the age of 75. Glen is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Pearl, his son Brad and his daughters Jane Moore, Holly (Lorne) Kostiuk and Beverley (Rod) Martin. Also treasuring his memory are seven grandchildren: Ross (Maureen) Moore, Jill Steenbergen (Ken Dennis), Stephanie Kostiuk, Ryan Kostiuk, Rebecca Kostiuk, Blair (Emily) Martin and Dane Martin. He enjoyed his eight great-grandchildren. Glen will be fondly remembered by his siblings, Lois Eaton, Beryl Abbott, Marina (Gordon) Becker, Donna (Bill) Richards and Jim (Pat) Nelson. He was a great uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Glen enjoyed his relationships with his many Swainson relatives and numerous friends. Depression and anxiety recovery program coming

to RimbeyDepression and anxiety can be

crippling emotional states that can grab anyone, unawares, and leave them feeling completely unable to cope with day to day challenges.

There is, however, help out there and no one needs to battle these mental health issues alone.

Following the cognitive be-havior therapy model, Nedley Depression and Anxiety Recovery Program can help by replacing negative thinking patterns and self-talk with realistic beliefs.

The eight-week-program, com-ing to Rimbey soon, will allow participants to identify depres-sion and its causes, improve their emotional intelligence and enhance their energy levels and mood.

The program, to be held at the

Rimbey Provincial Building lo-cated at 5025-55 St. on Thursday nights starting March 29, will help participants to defeat de-pression through right thinking and achieve peak mental per-formance.

A free orientation will be held on Tues., March 15 at 7 p.m.

The program authored by Neil Nedley is an eight-part series including an informative video, lectures and a workbook that will help participants move forward.

The program has helped over 5,000 documented participants from numerous countries achieve improved mental health.

The program will be directed by Sheila Beaudoin and Lorenzo Rolle.

“It is very good,” said Beaudoin. “It offers different ways to cope with depression and anxiety and how to recognize the signs.”

Rimbey RCMP reportIn the short time span of two

months, a 39-year-old Rimbey area woman has wracked up 71 charges relating to stolen prop-erty including cheques.

Ambert Achtemichuk was scheduled to appear in Rimbey Provincial Court March 4 to answer to the charges which spanned from Dec. 2015 to Jan. 2016.

“She is accused of possess-ing stolen property including cheques and fraudulently depos-

iting them in banks in Rimbey and Red Deer,” said Const. Carman Dutz of the Rimbey RCMP.

Rimbey RCMP, when stopping a driver in a vehicle east of Rimbey for a traffi c infraction, charged the person behind the wheel with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver was a 30-year-old male from Red Deer.

Const. Dutz encourages anyone who suspects an impaired driver may be on the road to contact the Rimbey RCMP at 403-843-2224 or contact Crime Stoppers.

Adult day program has new home

Rimbey Adult Day program, a successful ongoing program for families to provide relief for caregivers and positive, fun and stimulating activities for those in need of care, has a new home.

The program, that operated out of the provincial building for several years has moved to The Blindman Youth Action Building.

“We simply outgrew the provin-cial building,” said co-ordinator Norma Bauer. “This building has more room and a nice full working kitchen.”

Rimbey Adult Day program is a joint community project designed to help families and individuals. The program oper-ates in partnership with Alberta Health Services and FCSS and Rimbey Community Home Health Services.

Those participating in the pro-

gram meet at the Blindman Youth Action Building on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. and stay until 3:30 p.m.

Activities may include a morn-ing reading, exercises and crafts. Cooking or planting fl owers are some other projects that partic-ipants enjoy.

The group has become quite close knit, Bauer said, noting it is a win/win as friendships have been formed among the partic-ipants and caregivers are given some personal time.

Clients of the Rimbey Adult Day program live in the community, but may have suffered a stroke, or are experienced memory loss and confusion.

Presently there are six people who participate in the program, but more clients are welcome.

An open house will be held on April 19 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Blindman Youth Action Building.
