Coach Chad Beagle, coach of The Rimbey Atom A Renegades, is so proud of his team his buttons are fairly bursting.

The team, who competed in Pro-vincials in Daysland last weekend, has come home with a gold medal.

“They just really shone,” he said. “They were unbelievable.”

The Renegades started off the tourna-ment on Friday with a resounding win

against Daysland and when the players left the ice the scoreboard showed 15-0 in their favour.

Friday afternoon Rimbey faced Wa-bamum, winning the game 3-2.

“It was a very good game,” said Beagle. “Wabamum really came on hard and it was a good strong battle.”

The Renegades went up against Kitscotty on Saturday winning 6-4. This win secured the team first place in their pool.

“This was another really hard bat-tle,” said Beagle. “Kitscotty was a big, strong, aggressive team and it was a rough game.”

Rimbey Renegades defenseman Mitchell Mann was off the ice due to an ankle injury, during this game, leav-ing the team shorthanded, but they faced this challenge with determination and never let up.

“They just sucked it up and played really hard,” said Beagle.

A boat launch near Meridian Beach and Ra-ven Shores has received a $300,000 face-lift thanks to Ponoka County.

Charlie Cuthford, CAO for the county said crews worked diligently last week to finish the boat launch so it will be ready for the upcom-ing season.

“We rebuilt it in its entire-ty,” he said. “It was breaking down and we had had lots of complaints.”

The county received ap-proval from the appropriate government agencies to go ahead with the re-construc-tion of the boat launch. Special care was taken to ensure fish were protected during the construction.

“It was quite an involved process,” said Cuthford.

Ponoka County has completely renovated a boat launch near Meridian Beach and Raven Shores on the east side of Gull Lake. The boat launch was badly in need of repair and the county has spent $300,000 on the project. Devin Mielke Photo

The boat launch, which lies between Meridian Beach and Raven Shores, at the end of Meadowbrook Road is very well used and Cuthford said county council wanted to ensure it was upgraded to a high standard.

Ponoka County has bud-geted another $600,000 to upgrade the other public boat launch which is located on the west side of the lake off of Westlake Road, south of Poulsen’s Pasture.

The design of this boat launch is complete, but ap-provals have yet to come through.

Cuthbert said it could be late spring or early summer before this boat launch is completed.

The county also plans to rebuild and pave a portion of the road leading to the boat launch.

As well as the public boat launches, there are two pri-vate launches on Gull Lake.

I had a brief career with the Rimbey Boxing Club a few years ago. With the coaching from Rodney and Darcy Hol-lingsworth, and Mike Smith, I managed to secure four wins over four competitive boxing bouts. Three wins were from TKO referee stoppages and the fourth was a split decision

win after three full rounds. My wins are subject to the most valuable piece of boxing philosophy I learned within the club and still carry around in day to day life – go down swinging.

Each amateur competi-tive bout I engaged in wasn’t easy. All the training and di-eting that was governed by the coaches, as well as the self-discipline I learned, led me to my victories. In every round and after every hit to the head I did my absolute best to keep my eyes up – this was especially true when I thought I down in points. I knew to never give up during a match and my success was rewarded when my glove was hoisted into the air in triumph by the ref.

The push ups, the skip-ping and the sparring have become a memory of my previous toned and sculpted self. I’m onto to different

challenges now and I feel I have boxed through enough hits to the head. I still occa-sionally catch myself shadow boxing in my kitchen, but I don’t have any intentions of training as a boxer again.

The phrase assisted sui-cide carries with it a lot of psychological weight. And the shear notion that its ban has been lifted by the Cana-dian government contradicts my revered personal philoso-phy to go down swinging. Tough scenarios get danced around like a weak opponent, but we ourselves look like the fool when caught in the ropes of indecision.

I had the opportunity to attend a Conversation on Mind: Death and Dying, on March 12, 2015. It was a presentation supported by the Red Deer College’s Psychology Society at the Margret Parson’s Theatre. The panel of professors in-

cluded two philosophers, and a psychologist. Among the many important aspects of the discussion, assisted suicide emerged from the shadows. I’ve learned that even those who have the prefix “Dr.” in front of their name find it a difficult topic to navigate.

The Keystone XL Pipe-line and the U.S. president Barack Obama seem to be more deliberated upon in the Canadian journals rather than a phrase like assisted suicide. A lot of the definitions as-sociated with the seriousness of assisted suicide need to be crafted with diamond cut accuracy. There are many questions that have yet to be answered. At what ages do we give Canadians the ability to consider this amenity? Can an adolescent suffering from an irremediable and excruciating cancer have the decision to ends his or her life?

onto more material matters can be disconcerting, but I’ve already long since decided my stance before I realized a phrase like assisted suicide could exist. I’m going to go down swinging. I’m a young man and I can accept that the psychology and philoso-phy on serious matters can change; irremediable and excruciating medical situ-ations can alter a person’s perception of the situation. But during the present I can attest to standing tall upon the canvas and will do my absolute best to keep my head up. The ref will not always raise my fist in victory, but I’ll ensure to frighten any align-ment with resilience and not to be caught trembling in fear.

The conversation has just begun. We all need to stay open and strong when our friends and family members are faced with difficult op-ponents.

I had the distinct pleasure of being in the company of six people belonging to the future gen-eration of men and women this weekend.

It was fun, educational and a perfect opportunity to bridge that formidable gen-eration gap that blocks the potential for perfect (well, almost perfect) relation-ships to exist between the generations.

“It’s so rad, grandma,” says my granddaughter, referring to the TV show, Doctor Who! “I look at her blankly. “It is?” I say, trying to sound all hip and cool and un-grandma like.

She is 12. Her sweet little pre teen self seems temporarily suspended in the never never land that exists somewhere between childhood innocence and the shroud of wisdom teen-agers automatically cloak themselves with when they become of age.

“Rad,” I mutter. It’s rad. I’m rad. Rad is a cool word. No, don’t use cool, I chas-tise myself. “Cool is not a rad word.”

I move on. The next child, a year younger, ques-tioned me and his father’s stance that he needed to take his very rad baseball

hat off while we were eat-ing breakfast at a nearby restaurant.

“Why doesn’t mom have to take her hat off, grandma?” he said. “I look helplessly at my daugh-ter who had plopped on a baseball hat to hide her ‘bed head’ look.

I thought back to the array of ‘fascinators’ I saw in a store recently, and had to silently agree that ladies should be allowed to keep their head gear intact.

I pursued my lips and gave him my best grandma stare and said, “take your

hat off! Your dad said so!”Suddenly, without

warning the generation gap jumped up in front of me, but it didn’t matter. Sometimes, such gaps are necessary!

“I’m glad you are being taught proper etiquette at the table,” I said, somewhat primly. “It’s very rad,” I added weakly, as an after-thought!

Three boys (soon to be men of the future genera-tion) claimed my attention next.

From them I learned Ninja turtles really do live in manholes. I also learned one should never be too busy to stop and listen to the delicious sound of wa-ter running in ditches and through culverts. It signals the coming of spring just like the occasional green

sprout of grass and the song of a robin.

The boys also remind-ed me that the sound of a child’s laughter far out-weighs the satisfaction of a clean house.

I also learned, in the few hours I had the chil-dren, a baby, crawling on his hands and knees to-wards the stairs, is quicker than greased lightening and twice as dangerous.

My final lesson came from another grandchild who reminded me, once again, of the power of kind-ness.

When I arrived down-stairs and entered her mom’s spotless kitchen, I discov-ered a bowl laid out for my cereal, a carton of juice and a bowl of fresh fruit along with a note, “Here is your breakfast, grandma. Have

a nice day.” She had added a hastily drawn picture of a flower.

I read the note and the generation gap closed up once again.

There is a lot wrong with the world; unrest is continual and unsettling, political battles continue to rage and the price of oil has dropped again.

But, somewhere amidst all of that, like the eye of the storm, there still exist a few things that really matter.

Good table manners, politeness, kindness, imagi-nation and laughter that bubbles out of nowhere like running water in spring.

I feel fortunate to have been so lucky to have ex-perienced all of the above thanks to the future genera-tion.

It’s very rad!

Ponoka RCMP say nei-ther road conditions nor alcohol are believed to have been factors in a two-vehi-cle accident on Hwy. 53 that claimed the life of a Bluff-ton teen.

crews were on the scene and helped removed the young driver from the ve-hicle.

The teenage driver died of his injuries at the Stol-lery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton where he was taken by STARS air ambu-lance after being rushed to Ponoka Hospital. The driv-er of the flatbed truck was not hurt in the collision.

The accident is still be-ing investigated by RCMP.

The Rimbey Midget Ren-egades have won league semi finals and will soon advance to the finals.

The Renegades went up against Sylvan Lake Lakers last week in the semi finals, defeating the Lakers two games in the best of three series.

The Rimbey team soundly trounced the Lakers in game one, winning 6-0 at the Sylvan Lake arena.

However, the Lakers came back later in the week with a 4-2 win on their home ice.

The final game held March 15 in Rimbey ended 5-0 for the Renegades.

Wyatt Flemming put the Renegades on the scoreboard with the first goal of the game. Flemming was assisted by Chase Makofka and Brett Scott.

The second goal was scored by Wyatt Flemming who was assisted by Keefer Garnick.

Quinton Marki scored the third goal, assisted by Reid Frayn and Milton Elliot.

Chase Makofka shot the fourth goal past the Sylvan Lake goal tender, assisted by Frayn and Lane Franklin, as-sisted by Jared Lindley, scored the fifth and final goal.

Coach Corey Scott is pleased with his team’s per-formance on the ice.

“They’ve played a lot of hockey in February and March and they are doing well. They are just going ahead and get-ting it done. We had a bit of a hiccup against Sylvan, but it worked out in the end.”

The Renegades will face Sundre for the league cham-pionship at a later date.

Last weekend Rimbey traveled to Ponoka to compete in Provincials. They played Okotoks at 9 a.m. Friday and went up against Grimshaw at 8:15 p.m.

Saturday they faced Carstairs.

Scott is confident his team will do well.

Rimbey Fish and Game Association’s annual awards banquet held last Saturday offered a pleasing mix of good food, prizes, awards, auction items as well as an opportunity to enjoy some good old-fash-ioned socializing.

“It was a real fun eve-ning,” said president Jim Koenig. “We had a lot of positive comments.”

Koenig said more than 250 people attended the event held at the Pe-ter Lougheed Community Centre in Rimbey.

“It was well above aver-age,” Koenig said.

Youth involvement is a priority for the association, he added, noting the annual youth fishing fun derby will be held Sun., June 21 at Open Creek Dam Camp-ground.

The event is for Rimbey fish and game members’ children only and is a day of fishing with prizes for biggest fish, ugliest fish, weirdest fish, best snagged

A fall turkey shoot is planned for Sept. 6 at the Blindman Valley Gun Club Range and Big Buck Night will be held Dec. 12 at the Last West hall. This event gives Rimbey Fish and Game members an opportunity to bring their trophies taken during the season for measurement by official measurers using Boone and Crockett rules.

All trophies are eligible for the awards banquet and for entry into the Interclub awards competition be-tween Lacombe, Ponoka and Camrose.

Categories include all big game species and fish as well as youth, archery and black powder.

Awards handed out at the banquet went to Carol Schultz for the non-typical mule deer rifle with a score of 143 1/8, John Koenig won the typical mule deer youth with a score of 142 3/8 and Adrian Vos won the

typical whitetail rifle with a score of 146 4/8.

Non-typical whitetail rifle went to Kevin Trafiak with a score of 144 5/8 and typical whitetail archery went to Dylan Squires with a score of 138 6/8.

Typical whitetail rifle youth went to Jesse Koenig with a score of 71 1/8 and elk rifle was won by Mark Groves with a score of 174 2/8.

Black bear rifle was won by Randy Pletz with a score of 18 14/16 and black bear archery was won by Tyler Pletz with a score of 16 5/16.

Carol Schultz won the antelope category with a score of 60 4/8 and Rob Schultz won the moose category with a score of 80 1/8.

Amy Groves won the prize for the largest pike of 8 lb 6 oz. She also won the prize for the largest walleye which weighed 5 lbs. 8 oz. The avid fisher-woman managed to capture the prize for the largest rainbow trout as well,

successfully landing a two-pound fish.

Zachary Holland’s 18-pound catch was the largest pike in the youth category.

The Groves brothers did well in the walleye, perch and rainbow trout category.

McCoy won with his 4 lb. 3 oz. walleye and his brother’s perch and rain-bow trout, both weighing 1 lb. 5 oz. were also winners.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE COUNTY’S LAND USE BYLAW

Bylaw No. 1202/15

Lacombe County Council has given first reading to Bylaw No. 1202/15 the purpose of which is to amend the general regulations the County’s Land Use Bylaw. The amendments are being proposed to provide greater clarity to the regulations, address any issues which have arisen since the last amendments to the Bylaw and to support the new policies outlined in the Hamlet of Mirror Area Structure Plan. Examples of some of these amendments being proposed include:

A new definition for ‘kennel’ is being added to the definitions; Increasing the minimum standards in the landscaping regulations; Changing the required landscaping from m² (ft²) to linear frontage; Reducing the setback between Recreational Vehicles and Park Models to 3 m (10 ft) Adding campground minor, major, and intermediate to the H-C Commercial District and

H-PR Recreational District in the Hamlet of Mirror; A new HR3 Residential District (Hamlet of Mirror) which allows for larger lots of up to

0.4 ha (1 ac) and communal wastewater servicing; and Two (2) non-resident employees to be permitted to work in a major home based

business in the proposed HR3 Residential District (Hamlet of Mirror).

A copy of the Bylaw with the proposed amendments may be obtained from the County’s Planning and Development Department or by visiting the County’s website at www.lacombecounty.com.

Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed Bylaw amendments will have an opportunity to do so at a public hearing which has been arranged for:

The connection between gum disease and diabetes is a two-way connection. People with diabetes are more susceptible to oral infections and are at a greater risk of develop-ing gum disease. And treating gum disease can also lead to better control of diabetes.

Regular dental exams by your dentist are also the first line of defense

when it comes to early detection. According to the Canadian Dental As-sociation, every year approximately 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer and 1,050 deaths from oral cancer occur. This devastating disease has a low survival rate because it is often diagnosed very late. With ear-ly detection the survival rate of oral cancer can be greatly improved. This means going to your dentist for regu-lar dental exams. Your dentist has the training and experience to detect oral cancer early.

The town of Bentley was full of revving snow-mobiles and quads, and parking anywhere was minimal because of the number of trucks and trail-ers that had bought them to Bentley on February 28, for

the 14th Monkey Top Sa-loon sled/quad poker rally on Gull Lake.

There were a total of 274 sleds/quads registered and about 320 poker hands sold.

“We had wonderful weather. We had a marvel-ous turnout. We had great support, and we had a good time,” said Monkey Top owner Becky Kasparsons.

Two major prize donors were Sunny 94 and Todd from Labatts.

Volunteers included Glenda, June, Darla, Tanya, Tammy, Jim, Leza, Ash-ley, Mike, Dave, TJ, and JoAnne who helped along the course, and announcer Mark.

Both the winning High Hand and the winning Low

Hand were worth $1615, and there were three mys-tery prizes worth $1067 each, so the payout was very good. Names of win-ners were withheld upon request.

The event had origi-nally been postponed from

February 15 because of the possibility of not enough snow cover.

The sled rally was followed closely by the Monkey Top’s St. Patrick's Day party.

On May 11 there will be a special Mother’s Day

buffet-style breakfast/brunch with kids invited where there will be give-aways and fun events, and the next special event is not until rodeo time, said Kasparsons. Contact the Monkey Top Saloon for any details.

In preparation for the 2015 season, the Cen-tral Alberta Buccaneers have been busy practic-ing indoors as well as participating in numerous community events.

Over February and March, the team has gath-ered for indoor skills and drill sessions in preparation for the approaching season. The Bucs coaching staff has been pleased with the strong turnout of new and returning players.

“It’s great to get togeth-er with the guys and shake off the rust before season begins” explained a vet-eran Buc in between drills. While the team is practic-ing without full-contact equipment (pads and hel-mets), time spent on the gym floor is essential for regular season preparation.

“It takes a while for the legs to come back so I’m glad we’re starting this early.”

In addition to indoor practice, the team has or-ganized group workouts at their sponsor gym, Body Basics, in Red Deer. Each Saturday, players exercise according to football-spe-cific weight programs. While 2014-rookie de-fensive back Riley Raines from Breton is new to weight lifting and training,

he is “slowly getting into it more and more every day.”

Veteran players or-ganize the workouts and help guide the young-Bucs through each exercise. In comparison to last season, the 18-year-old has put on a considerable amount of mass. When asked by teammates how he’s gained so much size (besides Buc workouts), Raines re-sponded with a shrug. “I’m eating more, too, I guess.”

The Bucs have con-tinued to strive for involvement within the community during the off-season. For February, the Buccaneers spearheaded the first annual AFL Blood Drive - a league-wide blood donation that includ-ed the involvement of four other rival teams. Twenty members of the Bucs Fam-ily donated on Feb. 7.

The ladies at Red Deer Blood Services were pro-fessional and, to the relief of some of the first-time donators, were gentle while taking the Buc-blood. The team’s next donation is scheduled for early April. Any who are interested in donating with the Bucs are encouraged to contact the team via its website, www.cabucs.com, or through so-cial media.

The Renegades pulled away with a 3-0 lead early in the game, but Olds came back with two goals. Rimbey struggled in the third period, ending up with several penalties

which left them shorthanded.However, goalie Kaden

Tourssaint came through for the team with some fantastic saves, said Beagle.

“He made some saves in the third period that I have never seen a goal tender of that age make. The save he made with 30 seconds left in the game was unreal. He just kicked out his right leg and stopped the puck. It was unbelievable.”

Beagle said the Renegades all deserve recognition for their teamwork and dedication. He noted Keagan Landry was the top scorer and Hayden Motowylo, Tyler Gyori and Mitchell Man were great lead-ers during the year as well as in the tournament.

“Every time we had a down during the year, we learned from it and it all came together in that tournament.”

On Feb. 27, the Buc-caneers entered a team into the Ponoka Big Brothers Big Sisters "Bowl for Kids' Sake" fundraiser. It was the team’s fourth year in row entering the fundraiser and, to no one’s surprise; neither the Bucs’ bowling skills nor their costume-making skills had improved. How-ever, despite demonstrating some questionable bowling skills and medieval-themed costumes, they were still able to raise over $600 for BBBS.

The Bucs hosted their AGM on March 21. Any interested players and vol-unteers were encouraged to come to the Red Deer Lodge at 7pm in order to find out all info pertinent to the Buccaneers 2015 season. The team’s ex-ecutive discussed logistics – schedule, fees, locations, etc – and the coaching staff explained team philosophy, values, and goals.

Council has cut the residential yard compost program from its 2015 bud-get and Rimbey residents are encouraged to look at grass recycling as an alter-native.

Acting CAO Dona Tona is in favour of the change.

“We are now in the ma-jority of the communities in Alberta that have gone to grass cycling,” she said. “It is really nothing new and it

is a good way to reduce the environmental footprint.”

Residents are encour-aged to leave their grass clippings on their lawn and not include them in their garbage.

“The contractor will not pick them up and the land-fill will not accept them.”

Lawns should be mowed every four to five days with a sharp blade. No more than one third of the height of the grass should be cut at

any time.Grass should be dry

when it is mowed to ensure the roots stay intact.

Tona said grass clip-pings are made up of 80 to 85 per cent water and, if the weather is warm, will usu-ally disappear into the lawn within three days of cutting.

Tona said Leduc is one of the municipalities where grass recycling is in effect and it has worked very well in that community.

JAMES JOHN GUNNWith sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, James John Gunn, on Thursday March 5, 2015, at the age of 87. He died peacefully in his sleep, with family at his side. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ellamae; sister Doris Upshaw and Frank,

LEVERICKIn Loving Memory of Taylor Robert Leverick of Bluffton, Alberta, born on December 3, 1998 in Red Deer, Alberta, who passed away at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at the age of 16 years. Taylor accomplished many things in his short time with us. Sports were always important to him, and he found himself competing in many different activities from gymnastics and swimming to soccer, baseball, hockey, boxing, badminton, lacrosse, basketball, snowboarding, and even motocross racing. Taylor’s family and friends were very proud of him when he earned a spot on the Zone 4 2012 Alberta Summer Games lacrosse team, and traveled to Lethbridge to compete.

He loved to be ‘on the road’, and was especially proud to purchase his own truck, working weekends and summers to save enough money. Taylor also loved spending time with his family, especially his younger brother, Thomas who was never far from his side. He had such a gentle nature and became a loyal friend to many, often becoming like another son to many families. Taylor was a compassionate young man and was always very proud of other’s achievements ahead of his own. He loved to visit and always had time for everyone, young or old.

Taylor will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his parents, Rob and Leanne Leverick of Bluffton; his special brother and best friend, Thomas Leverick; his maternal grandparents, Gordon and Lorraine McFadden of Bluffton; and his paternal grandfather, Fred Leverick of Lethbridge. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his treasured aunts, uncles and cousins: Brian and Shelley McFadden and their daughter, Katelyn of Bluffton; Jason and Penny Leverick and their daughter, Violet of Lethbridge; Chad Leverick of Lethbridge; and Jan and Steve Gross and their son, Lane of Ponoka; in addition to numerous other relatives, community members, and a host of cherished and dear friends. Taylor was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Alfreda Morin in 2009.
