Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 40 files this weekDrug possession busts

Your local Mounties made two more drug busts resulting in seizures of marihua-na, cocaine and drug paraphernalia.  A local 27 year old man was arrested and charged for illegal possession of narcotics.  In a sep-arate case, a 17 year old male from Bluffton was charged with drug possession.  Police will continue to pursue those who are in-volved in the illegal drug trade in our com-munity.  Domestic abuse reports

Police are investigating a case of domes-tic abuse where the victim was allegedly as-saulted over a long period of time.  Eventu-ally, she reported the violent behaviour to police and the man has since been arrested and charged with numerous criminal offenc-es.  There is no excuse for hurting a loved one either through physical or emotional abuse.  Help is available.  Rimbey and Dis-trict Victim Services Unit has trained staff and volunteers available at any time, please call (403) 843-8494 or the detachment for assistance.

Sometimes, we see a variety of cases that would  just make you cringe.  Sometimes, we see cases that make us  laugh.  Many times  incidents are reported that make  us say, “whaaaaaat!?!”.    Unbelievably, this was a week full of the “whaaaaats”.      In one such case,  a young lady called 911  to report that her parents were making her do her homework against her will.  That call nearly tops the drug user who called 911 to report that his local drug dealer was charg-

ing way too much for meth now because of all the raids going on... what his supplier was charging now was in his words, “just criminal”.  Wedding ring found

An honest citizen found a ladies wed-ding ring set on the side walk and turned them in to the detachment.  If you are miss-ing your wedding set, please stop by the of-fice to identify the rings.  Man with handgun

Police responded quickly to a report of a man seen walking between houses and in alleys while carrying a handgun during the middle of the day.  Police were unable to lo-cate the suspicious person and no further re-ports were received in regards to the matter. Missing and in jail

Two missing person cases were reported.  In both cases, it was because police had ar-rested the men on outstanding warrants and they were sitting in jail and failed to notify their family of their whereabouts.  Being in jail is bad enough...apparently working up the courage to tell your wife or mother that you are in jail is even worse!   Scrape your windows for driving safety

Police dealt with countless other  calls for service, including a sexual assault case,  Mental Health Act incidents, mo-tor vehicle collisions, trespassing,  fraud and other  issues.   Officers still found time to patrol school zones and highways to en-sure everyone is driving safely.    Officers noticed a trend that deserves mentioning... please take an extra minute in the morn-

ing to scrape off your windshield for a to-tally unobstructed view.  One lady was seen driving her kids to school and she had only scraped a pie sized hole to peek through on her windshield.

Kids walking to school need your full attention - if you can’t see them...how are you going to stop in time for them!  Winter driving conditions make stopping on a dime impossible, so please drive with extra cau-

tion and slow down.If you have any information regarding

these or any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers:

Being committed will take you to where you want to be

Something I really look for-ward to doing once every two weeks is volunteering to partici-pate in fire practice night at the Eckville Fire Department.

Through attending the prac-tices and taking some necessary steps, I am now a member of the department. But I don’t volunteer for bragging rights, I volunteer because every practice night I get to take part in a new adventure, which gives me the inevitable out-come of learning new skills. So far I have learned how to break a car window, how to operate the settings on the water house and how to properly secure hoses onto a fire hydrant.

I still remember my very first practice night, as by the end of the night I could feel the desire to be a firefighter rush through my veins and enter the core of my body. I even watch videos of fire fighters rescuing people from burning buildings, as I find something very mentally relaxing with dwelling on the logistics of how to save a person’s life.

I can fully admit that there may be times in the future where I may not want to attend all practices, but I also have to take into account that being committed is the key to be-ing who you want to become. I still love being a reporter, but I see being a firefighter as more of a hobby that I take very seriously as a firefighter’s responsibility is to not only put out fires but save people’s lives.

The amount of acceptance and respect I receive from the guys in the department are two of the things that mo-tivates me to stay committed. It’s an atmosphere of where patriarchy is non-existent; I wear the same uniform and hat the rest of the guys do and I partake in all the responsibili-ties the guys do. Again, it doesn’t matter than I am a girl, it matters that I show my commitment.

Practicing with the men, consistently gives me the

Jasmine O’Halloran-Han

BLACK PRESS

chance of truly learning the hands on skills of how to handle the equipment, as the guys show me exactly what to do and what not to do. Sure, we are only practicing once every two weeks, but one day, it will be the real thing. This is why I am committed to doing what it takes to learn how to be prepared for handling real life situations. The skills I learn during practice are very valuable and I don’t take them for granted.

As I think into the future, I am sure I will one day be in dangerous situations which makes me ask myself ‘how am I really go-ing to react?’ The thought of this doesn’t send shivers down my spine or make my hair stand up, it makes me take everything that much more seriously, because sooner or later I will have everything I need to be a firefighter, just as long as I remain com-mitted.

Hydrant tagging – Eckville volunteer firefighters prepare to tag a fire hydrant by bleeding the water before securing the hoses at last Tuesday’s practice session in Eckville.

More than 20 people braved the cold winter tem-peratures to attend a town hall meeting held by MLA Joe Anglin last Thursday.

Anglin said later about 28 people attended the meeting held at the Rimbey Legion Hall.

“We discussed every topic under the sun and I was pleased to hear the concerns and chat with the people,” he said.

Anglin, the former Wildrose candidate is now running as an Independent. Though he is pleased with his decision, he said the door is always open for change.

“I never closed the door,” he said. “You should never close any door.”

While he is not happy with the inner workings of the Wildrose Party, he remains loyal to the basic concepts of the Party.

“I did a lot to help build that party. I went to 91 communities and held 261 town hall meetings. I would not have gone (crossed the floor)”, he said.

Anglin said he under-stands why Albertans are confused and angry about Danielle Smith crossing the floor and taking several other MLAs with her.

“Albertans have a sense of fairness; a great sense of fairness and they feel total-ly betrayed,” he said.

The dissention in the party had begun long be-fore the MLAs and leader Danielle Smith crossed over to the PCs, he said.

“There was a virus de-stroying it from the inside and these issues have not gone away. Can it be saved? Anything can be saved, but the people responsible for the destruction of the party are still there.”

Being an Independent has allowed him to stay true to his principles, he said.

“I have done that and I’m proud of that,” he said.

Anglin is especially proud of the fact the ‘trans-parency in the billing act’ was passed in the legisla-ture.

“I was the first Indepen-dent to have a bill passed in 91 years,” he said. “It is a bill that will help people understand where all these extra costs are coming from on their utility bills. “It was rewarding to be able to do something constructive versus just being the critic.”

Anglin doesn’t expect Albertans will see changes to their bills for about a year so the process can be completed.

Anglin had kudos for Premier Jim Prentice and the PCs, but admitted to being worried about cuts which may see the pro-posed senior’s lodge put on hold.

“We’ve not broken ground yet and any proj-ect that is not started could be cut or delayed,” he not-ed. “There are no sacred cows,” he added.

He is pleased that Hwy. 53 through Rimbey has been paved and gives credit to the RCMP for stating the original highway had be-come dangerous, thereby expediting the paving pro-cess.

Anglin plans to hold more meetings in com-munities throughout the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding to meet with residents and discuss relevant issues.

“The landscape has changed considerably,” he said.

This year a new twist was added on December 18 to the Bentley school’s Christmas concert.  For the first time, there was a matinee as well as an evening performance.  Other schools have done the same thing due to burgeoning num-bers and the cost of renting a bigger facility.

In past years the Christmas concert was staged at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre as a one-time big evening pro-duction.  This year the Bentley elementary gymnasium was the scene of the program.  Although there was some initial opposition, both performances were well attended.

For a variety of reasons, including no extra effort to haul and set up all stages, props and extra seating to the Ag Centre and back to the school, and just the convenience of being able to decorate and practice ahead of time at the school, and

to test sound and lighting equipment without extra arrange-ments, made the school more feasible.

Because the venue was smaller the audience was closer to the production for better viewing.  People who could were asked to attend the matinee performance leaving more room in the evening for an expected standing room only audience.

At the school, the performers could leave the venue and wait and be entertained in classrooms, and entering and exiting the stage was much easier.  Even babysitting in the elementary library was made available. All this made for less distraction and noise for the audience during the per-formance.

Emcees were grade 11’s Thomas Mueller and Taylor Hand who gave a historical accounting about each set (group of songs).

The program opened with a staff presentation of “The Night Before Christmas”: nice to see the staff join in!

The preschool sang the ABC song and S-A-N-T-A to the tune of “Bingo Was His Name-O” and the kin-dergarteners did a medley of reindeer songs while sprout-ing their reindeer antlers.

Grade 1 and 2 sang “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas” and held up their drawing of a hippo at the conclusion of their set.

“Holly Jolly Christmas” was sung by the Grade 3 as they entered the gymna-sium and took their places on stage then they sang “Si-lent Night” with an unusual twist.  There were three young ladies who speak German in Grade 3 this year, and with guidance from show director / producer /

Fine Arts teacher Marla Kolybaba, aided by her daughter who is studying in Munich Germany and an internet web site, the entire class practiced and learned and sung the song in German.

The Grade 4 did a vey lively version of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” with performers popping out all over from be-hind and inside of props which kept the heads of the audi-ence swinging around to see where the next student(s) would pop out from.  It was very entertaining, and the performers timing was meticulous.

For the next item in the program you could have hear the proverbial pin drop.  The entire Grade 5 class was silent while on stage.  They performed “O Little Town of Beth-lehem” without making a sound.  They did the entire song in sign language while dressed in dark colors and wearing white gloves, and being illuminated with black light.  The coordinated movements of the bright white gloves kept the audience in awe. The only sound was the accompanying methodical background singing of the song by Ms. Kolyba-ba and Grade 12 student Vivien Schunk.  Custodian Lucy Anderson was very helpful ensuring the movements were learned exactly correct.  It was astounding!

The junior high Fine Arts Class performed with the hand bells and senior high Fine Arts students Vivien Schunk, and from grade 11 Christianna Alapo, Taylor Hand and Chris McLaren sang “Light a Candle” while the grade 5’s silently held candles in the dark on stage, the artificial candlelight in many cases illuminating a wonderful child’s face.

Kolybaba said she picked “old fashioned Christmas” as the theme in honor of Bentley’s 100th anniversary coming up and that the concert happened as a result of the collaborative decision of the entire committee who helped her put it on.

A Grinch Christmas bouquet/tree was auctioned off by teacher Mr. Jason Hazlett, ‘guest auctioneer’, at the conclu-sion of the afternoon performance and all the other classes fundraising Christmas baskets were raffled off after the eve-ning performance.

There were far too many students, parents, and others that helped behind the scenes to mention them all but with-out them it wouldn’t have been possible.

The Rimbey Sleigh, Wagon and Saddle Club parade will make its way to town this year Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. The cutter parade will be filled with sleigh-drawn horses, which pro-vides a great opportunity for sleigh drivers to rally together and show the public what they are all about.

In this year’s parade, drivers will lead their horses in display on Rim-bey’s Agricultural Society grounds out-door track. A silent auction and conces-sion will be held indoors as well.

Club members and other local drivers are welcome to participate in the parade and are asked to arrive with all their equipment and be regis-tered no later than noon, as registration time will be held between 10 a.m. and noon on the grounds.

This year is the 23rd annual cutter parade, and the town’s citizens have waited two years to see this annual parade again, as the last successful parade they saw was in 2013. Last year’s parade had to be cancelled due to cold weather, deep snow and fewer club volunteers.

“It’s fun to participate or watch as it’s a celebra-tion of a longstanding tra-dition and a way to enjoy winter,” said club direc-tor Sandy Bell. “It’s an acknowledgement and an appreciation of dedicated drivers and their talented driving horses.”

There aren’t any new rules this year but Bell said there is a focus on safety, as there is a limit-ed amount of space avail-able.

“There are no saddle horses, except for the pa-rade out-riders who will help maintain a safe envi-ronment,” Bell said.

For more information please visit the Rimbey Sleigh, Wagon and Saddle Club Facebook page for current information.

Just a few weeks ago many people made New Year’s resolutions, person-al goals we set for ourselves that we promised we would try and achieve in the duration of this year. One of the common resolutions is being more physically active.

This is just one reason why the walking challenge is coming to town, a program with UWalk, which aims to help implement physical exercise into daily life. This cost-free program will start Feb. 2 and run for about three months. The program will inspire and motivate participants to walk more and be more physically active, as indi-viduals will keep careful track of their own steps with a pedometer. Pedom-eters can be purchased for about $10

at a local drug store. The current plan is to place indi-

viduals into competitive teams. The teams will then compete against each other, as the goal is to help your team be the first to reach a total of 3,262,500 steps, with possible prize wins.

Kristen Rylance organized the challenge in the hopes of getting more people involved in incorporating more physical activity in their lifestyles, as walking can decrease cardiovascular disease, increase bone health and im-prove mental health she said.

“It’s a good way for people with chronic disease to safely exercise,” Rylance said.

Rylance said there was an attempt to partake in the challenge last year, but this year they have altered the set-up in the hopes that more people will have the desire to participate.

“If it goes well and people enjoy it, we will probably do it again next year,” she said.

Last year individuals participated with the weight wise group where they committed to one night a week; but this year participants take their steps on an individual basis by exercising at their own convenience.

“It’s a good way for people to get out and get involved with an ac-tive lifestyle,” Rylance said. “People don’t set their goals to far in advance and they can ease their way into it. Were hoping the community will get involved and be healthier as a whole.”

To encourage more town participa-tion many medical and pharmaceuti-cal staff have signed up and are ready

to participate. Rylance said she even plans to speak with some of the people who were involved in the weight wise group to get them in-volved.

For more information on how to sign up and par-ticipate please email Kris-ten Rylance at [email protected], call 403-843-2256, or visit the Rimbey Medical Clinic.

Carson Tarnasky, a 21 year-old industrial design student and native of Rimbey, is working towards becoming a great architect as he is currently finishing his final semester of a four-year degree program at the University of Alberta.

Tarnasky said he sees industrial design as being the creative side of manufacturing every day products, and said his university training is giving him valuable skills in creating new products and allowed him to discover artistic design.

“I was always interested in creating new things, art in particular,” Tarnasky said. While at the U of A, Tarnasky got involved in the community of arts in Edmonton, which led

to the community helping to provide the funding he needed to complete his university internship as an artist in Shafer, Minnesota. This is where he spent time to develop and create a steal and wood abstract memorial sculpture for his Grandfather Bill, which was placed in the Franconia Sculpture Park.

“In Minnesota they really encourage experimentation and exploring new ideas,” Tarnasky said. Continued on page 13

Architect designs sculpture

Continued from page 11“The sculpture was a lot of work but I felt ac-

complished because I had made a valuable piece of work. It was also a cathartic experience to built that sculpture for my grandfather as well because I re-flected on his life.” After university Tarnasky said he hopes to gain some real world experience by ap-plying to design and architectural firms who work

with clients to design different things such as custom design and public art projects, as he said he wants to gain a sense of what industry he prefers working in. His end goal is to have his own individual art studio.

“I am also interested in gaining trade skills like carpentry,” Tarnasky said. “I want to gain those skills from the trades possibly as an apprentice so I can build my own skills to be my own individual artist.”

He said he suspects he will go to Calgary after completing university as the city has many job op-portunities available.

“My initial prospects are in Calgary, those be-ing companies I want to work for,” Tarnasky said. “I want to work for a company where I do work that is applicable to my interests, such as an architecture firm in Calgary called Sans Facon.”

Get ready to dress up and spend a romantic evening with your signification other by attending the Rimbey & District Vic-tim Services (VSU) third annual Valentine’s Day gala fundrais-ing event Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.

The evening will start with cocktails at 6 p.m. and will offer guests a mouth-watering dinner of prime rib or salmon, catered by Bob Ronnie. Guests will enjoy live music entertainment per-formed by Shane Chisholm, with silent auctions and prize win-nings to follow.

The VSU is a non-profit organization that offers support, in-formation and referrals to local citizens who have been victim-ized by crime. The evening’s proceeds will go to support the or-ganization, as the night is a major fundraising event for the year.

“People will see the warmhearted and generous community of Rimbey supporting a valuable and important community ser-vice,” said board director Sandy Bell. “It’s also a wonderful and romantic night out on Valentine’s Day.”

The organization provides the general population with valu-able information on topics such as domestic violence, fraud avoidance, bullying, Internet safety and healthy relationships in teen dating, Bell said.

“Feedback from those who have accessed our services con-sistently highlight the value and importance placed on the sup-ports received by community members in times of need,” Bell said.

Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased at Statio-nery Stories & Sounds.
