The Challenge for Water for Food

• Over 40% of the world’s population faces water scarcity• 70% of all freshwater withdrawals are for agriculture • Global water demand is projected to increase by 55% (2000-2050)• Agriculture is the main driver of increasing global water scarcity• Climate change is ‘most likely’ to aggravate water scarcity

After 2050 the risk of more severe yield impacts increases and depends on the level of warming. Climate change is projected to progressively increase inter-annual variability of crop yields in many regions.
