MAJOR RESEARCH INTERESTS AND PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIVITIES
The research projects and public health activities that the researcher leads or participates in,
presents an integrated effort to assist in combating tobacco epidemic in Egypt. This is
through provision of the domestic scientific evidence necessary to support policy decisions.
In addition to provision of technical assistance to governments to implement effective
tobacco control measures according to best practices and international agreements. The
research projects and national projects involved the following:
Epidemiology of tobacco use behavior and addiction
Genetics of tobacco use and addiction
Biological and environmental markers of tobacco exposure and tobacco
harms
Tobacco control: provision of technical assistance to governments and civil
society for the effective implementation of tobacco control policies at both
national and regional (Middle East) levels.

the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. All students, staff and
administrative authorities were invited to attend this workshop.

Participated as facilitator in Pre-Conference Meeting of Bloomberg Initiative
grantees at the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health, Mumbai, India (5- 8
March, 2009). Eighty-five participants from 36 countries, representing
organizations supported in Rounds One through Three of the Bloomberg Initiative
(BI) grants program, gathered in Mumbai, India prior to the 14th
World Conference
on Tobacco or Health. They took part in a 2-1/2 day meeting organized under the BI
grants program which is jointly managed by The Union and the US-based
Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (TFK). The meeting provided a first-ever
opportunity for those working on BI-supported grants across the world to exchange
information and experiences.

Participated as instructor, facilitator and coordinator in The Union technical training
courses on “Banning of tobacco advertising Promotion and sponsorship”, “Smoke-
free Policies Implementation”, “ Tobacco-Free Health Care Facilities” (2008-
present).
Development of training modules for tobacco-free health care facilities. This was
done in collaboration with MOHP and WHO. This was part of MOHP national
smoke-free initiative (2011)
Assessing the technical and management training needs, design training, identify
eligible organizations, designing tools for impact assessment as well as conducting
national and regional trainings for The Union Middle East. Also invited to teach in
trainings conducted by MOHP and WHO (2008- present).
