Luke 21:24 (ESV) They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations,
and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the
times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Begins with Nebuchadnezzar and ends with the antichrist.
Daniel 7:1-2 (ESV)
In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he
wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. Daniel declared, “I saw in my
vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea.
Daniel 7:3 (ESV)
And four great beasts came up out of the sea,
different from one another.
Bible Knowledge Commentary
“Throughout the OT, the Mediterranean Sea is referred to as the Great Sea. This
vision then related specifically to the Mediterranean world.”
Revelation 13:1 (ESV) And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its
horns and blasphemous names on its heads.
And the angel said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples
and multitudes and nations and languages. Revelation 17:15
Rising out of the sea can be translated as rising out of the masses of people. Satan will call the
beast out of the sea of humanity.
New American Commentary
Interprets the ‘sea’ to be symbolic of the earth, and the great beasts that rise out of this ‘sea’ are
interpreted later in the chapter as being great ‘earthly kingdoms’.
Both interpretations work since all four kingdoms represented by the beasts did emerge in the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. However, the
greater common denominator was dominion over Israel.
Isaiah 57:20 (ESV) But the wicked are like the tossing sea;
for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt.
Revelation 17:1; 15(ESV) 1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I
will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters,
15 And the angel said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are
peoples and multitudes and nations and languages.
Daniel 7:4 ESV
The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I
looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted
up from the ground and made to stand on two feet
like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it.
One of the Winged lions from the city gates of Babylon.
In other areas of the OT, the Word of God symbolizes Nebuchadnezzar and/or Babylon
as both a eagle (Jer 49:22; Lam 4:19; Ezek 17:3). Statues of winged lions, which are
believed to have been representative of the empire, have been found in the ruins of
Babylon. The tearing off of eagles wings and that the lion stood on two feet with heart of man probably refers to Nebuchadnezzar’s
insanity.
Daniel 7:5 (ESV)
And behold, another beast, a second one,
like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its
mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much
flesh.’
The bear is ponderous and has none of the speed or agility of a winged lion or
subsequent winged leopard. The Medo-Persian armies, even on moderate
expeditions, ranged from a third to a million men. Darius marched through the
desolate regions of Scythia with 700,000 men, exclusive of a fleet of six hundred ships carrying a naval force of
120,000 more.
Xerxes came against Greece with two and a half million fighting men
(2,500,000) Artaxerxes brought an army against his
younger brother, Cyrus the younger, numbering 900,000, with a contingent of 300,000 which did not come up in
time.
The bear raised up on it’s side represents the Medo-Persian Empire.
The lopsided stature represents Persia as it soon overshadowed the Medes in
the kingdom.
The three ribs represent three major Medo-Persian conquests of Babylon (539 BC), Lydia (546 BC) and Egypt
(525 BC).
Daniel 7:6 (ESV)
After this I looked, and behold,
another, like a leopard, with four
wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given
to it.
The leopard and wings represent the swiftness with which Alexander the Great conquered. It was written of Alexander that “he was impetuous and fierce in his
warlike expeditions as a panther after his prey, and came on his enemies with that speed as if he flew with a double pair of
wings.”
Alexander began his wars at the age of twenty, and at thirty-two the world had
been subdued to his authority.
Alexander’s empire broke off into four parts after his death.
Lysimachus took Thrace and Bithynia, Cassander took Macedonia, Selechus took Syria and the East, and Ptolemy
Soter took Egypt.
Daniel 7:7 (ESV) After this I saw in the night
visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and
dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and
broke in pieces and stamped what was left with
its feet. It was different from all the beasts that
were before it, and it had ten horns.
12 And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings (or ten kingdoms) who have not yet received royal power, but
they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast.
Revelation 17:12 Generally regarded as ten confederations of a
European Common Market which will arise in or before the tribulation period. It is the last and final form of the
Roman Empire. The ten toes on the beast of Daniel represent the ten-fold kingdom of the Roman Empire of the future. The beast will be their coalition leader!
This beast is a political leader.
The only great world power from Alexander’s four-headed Macedonian
empire to the end of all earthly political rule is the Roman Empire.
The Roman Empire has perpetuated its laws and method of rule in all the governments down through the ages. Rome relentlessly
consolidated all of its efforts in a settled and abiding order of common law which still holds
its place even after two thousand years.
Daniel gives us a complete summation of what all history has recorded concerning
the Roman dominion. Crushing power was its chief characteristic. Permanent
subjugation and organization on common principles of law were its distinguishing
attributes, which set it apart from all preceding empires.
Ten toes represent future kings. They would reveal the fulfillment of Daniel’s
prophecy centuries after his death. The Roman Empire stomped and trampled every
inch of available ground with particular viciousness. Division and weak leadership
finally led to its demise. No other comparable world power or empire has
since risen.

Daniel 7:8 (ESV)
I considered the horns, and behold, there came up
among them another horn, a little one, before which three
of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn
were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking
great things.
Revelation 13:4-8 (ESV) And they worshiped the dragon, for he had
given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the
beast, and who can fight against it?” And the beast was given a mouth uttering
haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two
months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who
dwell in heaven.
Daniel 7:9a (ESV) “As I looked, thrones were placed,”
Revelation 4:4(ESV) Around the throne were twenty-four
thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white
garments, with golden crowns on their heads. Revelation 11:16 (ESV)
And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and
worshiped God,
Daniel 7:9b (ESV)
“and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as
snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning
fire.
The Ancient of Days enters as the Chief Justice of the Universe. He will judge the little horn and those
in his empire.
Daniel 7:9 (ESV)
“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was
white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its
wheels were burning fire.
Ablaze …… In the Bible, what does fire usually speak of? (Think of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, or the lake of fire in Revelation, or
Sodom…..)
This is a courtroom scene, a scene of judgement.
Even Daniel’s name is significant at this point. Daniel’s name meant
God is my judge
Or
God has judged. Daniel has seen nations and rulers come
and go and now they will be judged.
Revelation 20:11-15 (ESV)
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing
before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged
by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and
Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death
and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found
written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Hebrews 10:31 (ESV)
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
There is a judgement for EVERYONE coming.
If you are a BELIEVER, Jesus took your punishment on the cross.
However, you will be judged for your service to the Lord. It is called the Bema seat of
Christ.
The Judgment of the Saved1 Corinthians 3:11-15(ESV)
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the
foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one's work will become manifest, for the
Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If
the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is
burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
The Judgment of the Saved
2 Corinthians 5:10 (ESV)
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
You and I will stand before Christ to receive rewards or loss of rewards. We will not receive
condemnation. It will be what we receive or what we do not receive.
The Ancient of DaysGod has been on the throne as judge since the first morning of the first day.
(In the beginning, God)
He was sitting on the throne from the beginning and will judge at the end.
Criminals who never get caught really never get away with it and get off scot-free.
The Ancient of Days will judge!
The Ancient of Days
A parent may say to a child caught in a wrong situation.
“I was not born yesterday”
The Ancient of Days says
“I was not born at all!”
Daniel 7:10 (ESV) A stream of fire issued
and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; (100,000,000)
the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.
The books are opened. The record of man’s deeds and misdeeds are laid bare. The just and
irrevocable sentence passed and the blasphemous monster will be given to the devouring fires!
Daniel 7:11 (ESV)
“I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was
speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given
over to be burned with fire.
Daniel was probably amazed that the horn was still boasting in the presence of the
Ancient of Days.
Daniel 7:12 (ESV)
As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
This probably means that each of the cultures was absorbed to some degree by
the next empire, so parts of them lived on for a while. When the fourth empire is
destroyed, nothing of it will linger in the Kingdom without end.

Daniel 7:13 (ESV)
“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man (the Pharisees
would have recognized this when Jesus spoke it!), and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented
before him.
Mark 14:60-62 (ESV)
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What
is it that these men testify against you?” But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high
priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
The Pharisees would have recognized it!
Mark 14:63-65 (ESV)
And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?
You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” (He just did!) And the guards received him with
blows.
In Daniel 7:13, the Son approaches the Ancient of Days to be judged worthy of all power and all authority! He is
brought before Him.
The Judge of all the universe sits upon His firey throne to judge ….. His Son.
At His first coming they spat upon Him and struck Him with their fists!
The radiance of God’s glory! All for saying:
“I am the one to be presented to the Ancient of Days, coming on the
clouds.”
But, worthy is the Lamb that was slain.
Worthy to receive glory and power and all honor. And the Kingdom will come.
Daniel saw the coronation of the Messiah King!!!
Daniel 7:14 (ESV)
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
What Nebuchadnezzar saw as the stone cut out of the mountain without hands is here identified to the prophet
as the God-man, Christ Jesus, the King of glory and the Captain of
salvation, anointed and ordained as the only rightful Lord of the world which He ransomed with His blood!
Daniel 7:15-17 (ESV)
“As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me. I approached one of those who stood there and
asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the
interpretation of the things. ‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the
earth.
Daniel 7:18-19 (ESV)
But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’
“Then I desired to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its
teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and
stamped what was left with its feet,
Daniel 7:20-21 (ESV)
and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before
which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that
seemed greater than its companions. As I looked, this horn made war with the saints and
prevailed over them,
Revelation 13:5-6 (ESV)
And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to
exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God,
blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven (we’ll be in the balcony, very
much alive, not in a frozen state).
Revelation 13:7 7 Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every
tribe and people and language and nation,
The saints are those living in the great tribulation period. He was able to conquer them, but not turn all of them.
Satan is now totally focused on the earth. He has been thrown down from heaven. He is the ruler of the earth and is not constrained by the Holy Spirit who is in heaven with the
church. For 42 months, he has unbridled authority over every tribe and people and language and nation.
Revelation 13:8-10 (ESV)
and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the
foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear:
If anyone is to be taken captive,
to captivity he goes;
if anyone is to be slain with the sword,
with the sword must he be slain.
Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.
Daniel 7:22 (ESV)
until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given for the
saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom.
Daniel 7:23 (ESV)
“Thus he said: ‘As for the fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth,
which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
Polybius (208 – c. 125 BC) was a Greek historian of the Hellenistic
period noted for his work The Histories, which covered the period of 264–146 BC in detail. The work
describes the rise of the Roman Republic to the status of dominance in the ancient Mediterranean world
and includes his eyewitness account of the Sack of Carthage and Corinth in 146 BC, and the Roman annexation
of mainland Greece after the Achaean War.
"Polybius claimed that the Romans deliberately caused as much destruction as possible,
slaughtering and dismembering animals as well as people, to deter other communities from resisting Roman demands to surrender. Male inhabitants
were usually slaughtered, women raped, though only in exceptional circumstances killed in the initial orgy of destruction. After that, as tempers cooled and the desire for profit took over, prisoners would be
taken for sale as slaves, though at times any considered to have a low market value, such as the
very old, were still massacred."
Daniel 7:24 (ESV)
As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
and shall put down three kings.
At some point during the 10-king confederacy, another Gentile king or head
of state will emerge. Though at first he appears to be a “little horn”, he will prove
incomparably powerful. The text intimates that he will also exceed the others in
intelligence and arrogance. Three kings or kingdoms will apparently resist his power
and be conquered by force. The other kings will then likely submit out of fear or a sense
of inevitability.
These will continue to be separate nations but will come under the little
horn’s control.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 (ESV)
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you,
brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming
to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and
the man of lawlessness(the “little horn”) is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so
that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
2 Thessalonians 2:5-10 (ESV)
Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now (the Holy Spirit filled Church!) so that he may be revealed in his
time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way (the Rapture, the Holy Spirit departs with the Church!). And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill
with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by
the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are
perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
We cannot be positive about the identity of the restrainer, but we do know that the
Holy Spirit abides in all Christians. Therefore, if the church is removed from
the picture through the rapture, the restraining work of the Holy Spirit would
naturally be removed. The result would be intensifying of evil in the world reaching its pinnacle with the emergence of the “man of
lawlessness”.
Not all commentators agree that when the church is removed from the picture through the rapture, the Holy Spirit would naturally be removed. Some believe He will still be on the earth but cease to restrain the “man of
lawlessness”.
1 John 2:18 (ESV) “Warning Concerning Antichrists”
Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist
is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.
Down through the ages, a great amount of energy has been spent to identify the antichrist. Here are some guesses -
Oliver Cromwell Judas Iscariot
The Pope (AD991) Moshe Dayan
Pope Leo John F. Kennedy
Pope Gregory IX Henry Kissinger
Adolf Hitler Caesar Nero
Caligua Antiochus Epiphanes
Mikhail Gorbachev
Scripture also has other titles or references some interpreters link to the little horn, such as the rider on a white horse (Rev 6:2). One of the most notable characteristics of the antichrist is his genius. Most likely, he will be a gentile (Rev
13:1) emerging from a reunited Roman Empire (Dan 7:8; 9:26) who is an intellectual genius (Dan 8:23), an oratorical genius (Dan 11:36), a political genius (Rev 17:11-12), a commercial genius (Dan
11:43; Rev 13:16-17), a military genius (Rev 6:2; 13:2) and a religious genius (2 Thess 2:4; Rev 13:8)
Daniel 7:25 (ESV)
He shall speak words against the Most High,
and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
and shall think to change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
for a time, times, and half a time.
“Time, Times and 1/2 Time”“Times” = dual, later lost in Aramaic
(All my friends came over last night, both of them)
1 +2 + 1/2 = 3 1/2 Dan 7:25; Dan 12:7; Rev 12:14
3 1/2 years Dan 9:27; 12:7
42 months Rev 11:2; 13:5
1260 days Rev 11:3; Dan 12:6
1/2 “week” Dan 9:27
Who are these “holy people” or “saints” that will be oppressed? The Aramaic word translated “saints” is the equivalent of the Hebrew qados, meaning “holy (one), saint”. Many scholars believe the saints in
Daniel 7 refer specifically to the people of Israel and that Israel will be the focus of unparalleled persecution in the last days. Others refer to the saints in Daniel 7 as “believers” meaning people who place their faith in Christ during the terrible times of the last days, many of whom will be Jewish by heritage. Daniel 7:27 offers
the most helpful generalization. The saints are the people of the Most High.
Whatever their specific identity, we can know for certain that they are God’s people: “the people of the most high”. This could be the nation of Israel (as His covenant and chosen people), Christians, or both.
The antichrist will oppress the saints. Oppress “literally means ‘to wear away’ or ‘to wear out’, as one would wear out a garment.
We also learn from verse 25 that the antichrist “will try to change the set times and the laws”. The context of the antichrist’s persecution of
the saints suggests to many scholars that these set times and laws are either religious or
greatly impact the practice of religion. We noted that the antichrist will be a “religious genius”. His goal will be to set himself up to
be worshipped (satan through the antichrist).
The New American Commentary suggests that the “set times’ are best understood to be religious
holidays, which the antichrist will attempt to eliminate.”
Denying religious liberty is a characteristic of dictators (Antiochus IV, Nero, Domitian, Stalin,
Hitler, and others), but antichrist will go beyond what anyone has done before in his attempt to
create a thoroughly secular world. Even now there are attempts to rid society of all vestiges of religion.
Revelation 11:2 2 but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will
trample (pateō) the holy city for forty-two months (for a time, times, and half a time).
This is most likely seen in the second half of the tribulation; the great tribulation period. During the first
half of the tribulation, the Jews are apparently given considerable freedom in their temple worship. This would
probably preclude the trampling of the holy city. In the latter half (forty-two months), the tables have turned and the unbelieving gentiles will run amok over the holy
courts.
The statement that the holy city is under Gentile control is borne out
by Christ in Luke. 24 They will fall by the edge of the
sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be
trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the
Gentiles are fulfilled (the times of the gentiles end at His second
coming). Luke 21:24

Daniel 7:26-27 (ESV)
But the court shall sit in judgment,

And the kingdom and the dominion

Revelation 13:4 (ESV) And they worshiped the dragon, for he
had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who

Revelation 19:11 (ESV)
“The Rider on a White Horse”
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he
judges and makes war.
Revelation 19:19-20(ESV)
And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. And the beast (the little horn) was captured, and with it the false prophet (the third member of the unholy trinity) who in its presence had done the signs by
which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its
image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
Revelation 19:21 (ESV)
And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was
sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.
He will just say it and it will happen!!!!!
Daniel 7:28(ESV)
