ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

To Reverend Butts, the Ministerial Staff, Deacons, Ushers, Naomi Graham, Eunice

in Christ – We extend our sincere gratitude for your prayers, comfort, support, and

loving-kindness in the loss of our beloved Miles Davis Hamilton. Our family is very

appreciative, and we send our love and the Lord’s blessings to you all. ~ Donnette

Mathews and The Hamilton/Pennington Family

Thank you to everyone who supported the Thank you to everyone who supported the $3.0 in 24MO! Campaign and to those who attended the reception. This two year campaign officially ended on

October 31, 2016. To date, the campaign allowed us to pay for the cost of nearly two of the five floors. Your generosity has been overwhelming.

As you can see, we still have a way to go. For those who have not completed their pledge, we want you to continue your payments even though the campaign has ended from an accounting point of

view. All of your future payments will be noted to your pledge. We ask you to continue to support AbyWest. New initiatives will roll out soon as we continue to forge ahead to reach our goal of $8MM

to complete the entire five floor community center.

We continue to strive to attain 100% participation because we want others to know our membership is committed to this effort. Your support is greatly appreciated!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

BIBLE QUEST

As we prepare for the fall season, let us think about new beginnings—a fresh

opportunity to increase knowledge of God’s Word. Challenge yourself to see how many

questions you can respond to before checking the Abyssinian website for the correct

Bible reference points? http://abyssinian.org/ministry/christian-education/abyssinian-

institute-for-christian-education/ Stay intentional about taking time to center yourself,

as you read the entire chapter where the answers are found.

1. This father raised Samson as a Nazirite that would deliver Israel out of the

hands of the Philistines. What was his name and to what family did he

belong?

2. In the Book of John, what were the last words Jesus spoke to a woman

caught in the act of adultery?

3. Name the commander who was anointed king over Israel and was ordered to

avenge the death of God’s prophets by striking down the house of Ahab.

4. What was the description given for the Holy Spirit when it first came upon

those assembled together in the Book of Acts?

2019 FALL COURSES

Sunday Morning Bible Study - Deacon Gwenette Reese

Sundays: 9:00 AM-10:00 AM - 1st Fl Conference Room This study of God’s Word is designed to expand its reach to those who are interested in applying

practical solutions to everyday issues. It helps members focus on the will of God, as they read the

Bible through the lens of the African-American experience.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Half Truths: Speaking with Authority - Rev. Pamela D. Mason/Sis. Charisse A. Nelson

Thursdays: 7 PM - 8:30 PM - Vestry | 10/17, 10/24 Is money really the root of all evil? If you ask God for something will it really be given to you? Is

it true that we should never judge? Have you ever found yourself disagreeing with use of a

scripture that’s been misquoted? In the age of “fake news,” it has become difficult for people to

hear, see, and recognize TRUTH. Believers of Christ, however, can find comfort in speaking the

truth of God’s Word with confidence. This course takes a close look at the complexity of

scripture and some of the misquoted and misused Bible verses that create conflict rather than

hope in the hearts of those seeking God’s grace. We will work in teams to identify ways to

communicate effectively when disagreements arise and put into practice faith principles of truth,

so that God’s people are well prepared to speak in love and with authority.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- The Legacy of Faith - Rev. Pamela D. Mason/Sis. Charisse A. Nelson Tuesdays: 7 PM – 8:30 PM – Blue Rm. | 10/29, 11/12, 11/19

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice

II Timothy 1:5-14. Faith grows over time when tested by fire! It starts as small as a mustard seed,

but when we commit to a transformed life in Christ, faith strengthens through the power of God’s

Holy Spirit. If you are ready to reach for peace that passes all understanding through faith, join this

special teaching as we seek evidence of God’s faithfulness to those who diligently seek and glorify

God’s name. We will examine stories of faith found in God’s Word, explore the faith practices of

our ancestors, and identify God’s movement in circumstances of our lives, and in the world today.

MINISTRY

TRUSTEE’S CORNER

ARE YOU RECEIVING PROPER

CREDIT FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS?

numbers with your contributions. The membership number is the key element for

accurate recording of your gifts, and should be noted on all of your contributions for

proper credit. Please Remember:

➢ When placing your Tithe/Offering/Contribution in an envelope, make sure

that your assigned Abyssinian Baptist Church member number is visible

on the top right-hand side;

➢ If you are writing a check, please include your Church member number in

the memo line or at top of the check;

➢ Make sure to inform us of your intentions by noting amount for tithes,

offering, or AbyWest on the envelope, or in the memo section of your

check.

Proper notations, membership numbers, and clear intentions

will help to ensure accurate year-end reporting of your contributions.

MATCHING GIFT OPPORTUNITIES

Did you know that you can increase your gift to The Abyssinian Baptist Church by

simply notifying your

company? In 2018 we

received a strong response

from our membership for

the Matching Gift Program

contributions ranging from

25% - 100%.

Find out if your employer is one of more than 1,400 U.S. companies that participates in

the MATCHING GIFT PROGRAMS. Companies with a MATCHING GIFT

PROGRAM will make a donation to a nonprofit organization that their employees

support. Please check with your company's Human Resources Department to see if it

has a Matching Gift Program and applicable policies, then contact the Abyssinian

Development Committee, through Trustee Alexis Thomas, 212.862.7474 x210.

Every gift we receive helps us manage our Church's many programs. 2019 Donations can be

used to match your tithes, offerings and AbyWest contributions.

MAMMOGRAPHY: IMPORTANCE OF EARLY DETECTION Mammograms find between 85 and 90% of breast cancers, that's

why it's so important for a woman to combine an annual mammogram

with monthly breast self-examinations and a physical examination of the

breasts by her personal physician. A Mammography finds cancers up to

two years before they can be felt, which means at a very early stage, when

the cancer is most curable.

The single greatest magnifier of the risk of contracting breast cancer is age. At age 25, your

chances are one in 19,608. at age 50, your chances are one in 50. at age 65, your chances

are one in 24. and your overall lifetime risk is one in 8. Another strong risk factor is a

personal or family history of breast cancer. Other factors include:

• First menstrual period at an early age (before age 12)

• Late menopause (after age 50)

• First child after age 30, and

• Never having children

There are two types of Mammograms: Screening Mammogram -- Performed by a

registered radiologic technologist and interpreted by a radiologist (medical doctor), this

mammogram takes 15 to 30 minutes. Diagnostic Mammogram -- Performed when signs or

symptoms of breast cancer is present, a personal history of breast cancer, breast implants

or a specific problem found on a mammogram that needs further evaluation. The X-rays are

performed by a registered radiologic technologist. This mammogram takes 30-45 minutes.

Inform your physician if you are pregnant or have been breastfeeding during the last six

months, as it would be best to postpone your mammogram and reschedule. Talk with your

physician about a diagnostic mammogram if you have breast implants, or if you have any of

these symptoms:

➢ Lump or thickening in the breast or under the arm

➢ Marked asymmetry of your breasts

➢ Changes in the veins on your breasts

➢ Unexplained discoloration of your skin (redness or bruising)

➢ Shiny skin, large pores, skin ulcers

➢ Dimpling, puckering, retraction of the skin or areola

➢ Fixed inversion of the nipple, which is a change from a previous examination

➢ Scaling, crusting or drainage of the nipple or areola

➢ Localized breast pain

You need not be concerned about levels of radiation. the doses are very small and tightly

regulated by the food and drug administration in the U.S. You will feel some pressure as the

mammogram is performed, but any discomfort will last only for a few seconds. patients will

be notified by their physician about the results. Every woman needs a mammography at an

interval that is deemed appropriate for her age and risk factors. Remember, even if a breast

lump is discovered by physical exam or

mammography, more than 80% of them are

non-cancerous. so, the key defense for every

woman is early detection! Sponsored by

The Abyssinian Baptist Church Medical

and Health Ministries.
