Parents were/are all about passing little nuggets of wisdom onto their children. Nug-gets of advice and sayings, and rules to live by that we can still hear them saying. sometimes over and over, and it turns out that we were listening! So, in honor of Mother and Father’s Day we have asked you to share some Mom and Dad-isms that your parents or grandparents used to impart wisdom when you were a kid. And along with these “isms” we say thanks to Dad and Mom for shaping our minds and helping us “navigate” our lives. We share some of these with you:

Emma Odom, who served as Vacation Bible School Coordinator for 24+ years, is shown with Pastor Morgan and Assistant Pastor Price. Sister Odom was honored by the incoming lead-er of the Vacation Bible School, Joyce Black-shire. Sister Odom’s service to this ministry and to Abiding Faith Baptist Church is exem-plary. During her leadership of the Vacation Bible School, the VBS grew tremendously each year. She has also coordinated the youth trips to the National Convention and other trips. Her organization skills are a blessing to our church and we say hats off to Emma Odom. We appre-ciate your dedicated service!!

On June 12, 2018, a group of members, et al, traveled to Kemah Boardwalk in Kemah, Texas to attend a workshop on disaster planning. The trip included free transportation, free food and a free boat ride (for some), free gifts and valuable information. It was an informative and fun day! Kudos to Sandra Norman, who spearheaded the “excursion”, assisted by Florida Dixson and Vera Barnum. Great Job, guys!!

The guest speaker was Sherry Blake, Ph.D., better known as “Dr. Sherry” from the Reality Show Braxton Family Values and advice columnist for Essence Magazine— who is also a personal friend of Norman’s. “Dr. Sherry’s” presentation covered many areas of in-terests— financial, physical, emotional and resources.

The event was sponsored by TWEF (Texas Women’s Empower-ment Foundation. The Foundation mentors families by assisting the to “reach their fullest potential” in the areas of personal devel-opment, business, education, finances and socio-economic develop-ment. The founder is Deavra Daughty, CEO, business woman and passionate philanthropist since 2002. Thank you, Deavra Daughtry, for your kind generosity!

MEN FOR CHANGE is a Title 501 organization dedicated to promoting education, community, brotherhood and family. They provide scholarships to high school students who are otherwise unable to finance their continued education.

This year, in April, Deacon Billy Polk, who is a member of this organization, sponsored some of our members (pictured above), to attend their Annual Award’s Banquet. We congratulate MFC and Deacon Polk and hold them in high esteem for their dedicated care and support of these students. We wish them much continued successes in all endeavors as they reach out to our community with kindness, and support. Thank you, also, “Deacon Billy”, that was very generous and thoughtful!!

The ABIDING FAITH INTERCESSORY PRAYER GROUP prays on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. at the church. In May, we took our ministry beyond the walls and visited with one of our sick-and-shut-ins, Ruby Martin, who now doesn’t look like she’s been sick a day in her life. We prayed, fellow-shipped and had a nice repast. We praise God and thank Him for answered prayers for her return to the fold. To Him be glory, praise and thanksgiv-ing! Seated left to right: Fay Faulknor, Florida Dixson, Iris Petitt, Gwen Harris, Ruby Martin, Stella Spencer and a visitor who prays with us.
