Electromagnetic Force DemonstratorThe Electromagnetic Force Demonstrator is a dynamic way of illustrating the Lorentz Force and the interconnection of electrical current and magnetic fields. The device consists of two metal rails fixed to a permanent magnet with its magnetic field directed upward. An aluminum pipe is placed between the rails and by applying a current using a hand-held generator, the pipe will move down the track depending on the direction of current applied. Reversing the current direction results in the aluminum pipe also reversing its movement on the track. The direction of the aluminum pipe can easily be determined using the Right-Hand Rules (of magnetism), reinforcing the interrelated concepts of current, magnetic fields and the Lorentz Force for your students. Students can also observe how an increase in current affects the speed of the pipe on the track. Finally, a real-life model showing the interaction between magnetism and electricity, that your students will love! Genecon sold separately; see page 44. Exploring Newton’s First Law: Inertia KitStudents investigate inertia by observing a marble’s motion around a specially designed circular track, and then predict what path it will follow when a section of the track is left open. They discover that once the marble leaves the confines of the track, it moves in a straight line path. Students will also investigate how, or if, changing the mass or the marble changes the results. In Part 2, students complete a reading about inertia and Newton’s first law of motion. The kit accommodates unlimited classes, each with 6 groups of 4 students.

Newton would have loved this discrepant event!

A great introduction to the concept of magnetic potential energy.Using a double sided ramp and a series of steel marbles, you initially demonstrate conservation of momentum by rolling one steel marble down the ramp to collide with a resting group of marbles. Not terribly impressive so far…

While setting up to repeat the demo, replace the first resting steel marble with a magnetic sphere. Your students will be amazed as the collision shoots the last steel marble right off the ramp!

Is energy conserved in a magnetic field? Watch as students try to figure out this amazing demo.

Use a little drama and slight-of-hand to generate thoughtful discussion of

conservation laws!

Vertical Acceleration DemonstratorNo beginning physics student should miss this. It dramatically demonstrates a concept that is crucial for understanding projectile motion: the independence of horizontal and vertical components of projectile motion. Two balls are mounted on the apparatus. When you release the spring, one is dropped directly down while the other is projected horizontally. Listen, and you’ll hear that both hit the floor at the same time! Easy to set up and level. A Rod Clamp and Ring Stand are required (sold separately).

Inertial BalanceThe Inertial Balance consists of two rectangular platforms supported by a pair of spring strips. With one end clamped to a table, the other end is free to swing or oscillate back and forth. Adding mass to the free end increases its inertia and causes it to oscillate more slowly. By comparing the periods of the apparatus with known masses to the period of an unknown mass, the value of the unknown mass can be determined. This comparison can either be accomplished using a graphical program, such as Excel, or graphing the values by hand. The Inertial Balance FINALLY provides a definitive way to determine the inertial mass of an object directly, without relying on gravity to assist in the student’s calculations. Since students seem to show their frustration and confusion between mass and weight, the Inertial Balance is a unique way to confirm the difference between the two ideas. Size: 130mm x 20mm x 315mm.

g Ball

If you REALLY want students to wrap their minds around the concept of what falling objects do and aren’t “clinging” to the insistence of obtaining the absolute precision of 9.81m/s2 in lab, then the g Ball is exactly what you’re looking for. A favorite experiment with the g Ball is to show students that g is the same no matter the height from which the ball is dropped. Drop the g Ball from 3 meters, 2 meters, 1 meter, and 50cm in height using d = ½ at2 with the measured time, will result in ~ 10 m/s2 every time! The ball has a timer that is started manually with a push of a button at the instant it is released or thrown. When the ball strikes a surface, the timer stops and the time is recorded. The cool thing about the g Ball is that it can be used anywhere; outdoors to measure the height of the flagpole, the speed of a student pitch in the hallway, and in the conventional lab setting, without the need for computers, expensive data collectors, or complicated devices. Diameter: 10cm. Replacement batteries inlcluded.

A whole New View of Diffraction! Finally, the fundamental concepts of diffraction can be clearly observed and demonstrated for your students! Attempting to show the factors which affect diffraction; finding the correct slit sizes, manipulating different colors of LASERs, switching between gratings, even changing distances between the slit and the screen, has been traditionally difficult to set up in the classroom… until now. With Arbor Scientific’s new Demo Diffraction Grating, demonstrating diffraction of light concepts has never been so easy and definitive. There are three 20mm x 10mm gratings with 100, 300, and 600 lines per mm, mounted between glass plates. Used in conjunction with a mounted red/green dual LASER (P2-7679), the students will be able to vary wavelength, slit size, pattern distance, even display multiple diffraction pattern overlays for any classroom activity, including precise quantitative measurements for your favorite diffraction lab.

RSpec-Explorer Digital Spectrum Camera and SoftwareStudents expect to use modern technology for nearly everything they do these days. The RSpec-Explorer is light years ahead of traditional tools like diffraction gratings or spectroscopes. Students will appreciate the ease in which they can digitally capture spectra, then study the results in real-time and all at the same time. The RSpec’s live video captures the students’ attention far more effectively than the passive activities often used today. The included camera and software make this an easy and inexpensive solution to studying quantitative spectral data in the classroom. Check out our RSpec demo video to see the power of this cool tool. Full version in both PC and MAC. 380-700nm resolution.

Cool stuff you can do with the RSpec-Explorer:

• Compare the spectra of fluorescent bulbs, incandescent bulbs, sunlight, and LEDs

• Observe and identify ionized gases by their spectra

• Recognize “faked” RGB colors from true wavelengths

Being able to actually display the spectral lines in real-time accompanied with a graph highlighting the peak intensities has enhanced my students’ understanding of the concepts in teaching Bohr’s model and the principles of specific atomic emissions.”

Spectrum Tube Carousel GroupThe Spectrum Tube Carousel Power Supply offers a considerable improvement in safety, convenience, and tube life over conventional systems. Unlike other designs, the system has no exposed high voltage to eliminate the risk of electric shock, and the built in magnetic interlock system prevents the spectrum tube from being energized unless the tube is correctly inserted. Holds up to eight tubes simultaneously, and is a great storage device when not in use. Quickly switch from one gas to another by rotating the carousel until the required tube reaches the energizing station. All spectrum tubes are sold separately.

LED ArrayThis ingenious LED Array provides a fun, eye-catching demonstration of how wavelengths affect colors. A major improvement over using color filters with a “white” showcase bulb, students can easily observe color diffraction from their seats and actually compare the diffraction patterns for color at the same time! The LED Array features 11 vertically mounted lights ranging from deep red to violet, plus white. It can be used effectively as a standalone with traditional tools like rainbow glasses or diffraction foil, and it’s also ideal for use with the new RSpec-Explorer software, which allows users to digitally capture spectra and then study the results in real-time. Combining the LED Array with the RSpec-Explorer allows users to display multiple spectra simultaneously, clearly demonstrating that each individual wavelength is diffracted by a different amount of length.

WAVES & SOUND

Each speaker emits the same single frequency. Place the speakers at least 1m apart and observe the sound halfway between. Constructive interference produces a sound louder than each individual speaker. But move to one side, into a region of destructive interference, and the sound becomes quieter than one speaker alone!

Qualitative and Quantitative Experiment Options

Ask students to predict what will happen if the frequency is increased. Will the interference points get farther apart, or closer together? Move around, map the interference points around the room, and determine the wavelength. Comparable systems retail for over $250! Includes tone generator, pair of speakers, all necessary cables, and a Teacher’s Guide.

Generator Frequency range: 20Hz ~ 20KHz ±1dB

Resonance Bowl The original standing wave demo!

Resonance bowls date back to the Han Dynasty (202 BC – AD 9) making this an ancient, but still highly effective, way to discuss and demonstrate standing waves. This seemingly simple bowl takes just the right touch to turn into a fun and engaging demonstration of the behavior of waves and their interactions. Every rub changes the frequency of the waves in the bowl. With practice, you should be able to produce a standing wave with spouts of water shooting from the four anti-nodes spaced along the entire rim of the bowl, identified by the fish engraved in the side of the bowl. It is quite the memorable demonstration!

ELECTROSTATICS

Insulated base prevents charge from traveling to other objects.

Dissectible Leyden Jar! Leyden Jars were the first functioning capacitors and were used in many early experiments with electricity. Your students can repeat the experiments with this affordable easy to use jar. The inner and outer metal conductors are separated by a plastic insulator cup. Charge the aluminum terminal with a Van de Graaff Generator or Wimshurt Machine, and take the jar apart. The charge will then be stored on the metal conductors and the plastic dielectric. When the conductors are replaced, the charge is transferred back to them. 3 piece set. Instructions provided. Size: 3”diameter and 5.75” height.

Plasma GlobesSafely create and explore lightning right in your classroom.

These popular plasma items give you a safe, fascinating way to demonstrate how lightning works as well as an explanation of the concepts of potential differences and

electron orbital jumping.

A small tesla coil produces a large potential difference between it and the surrounding glass, similar to a cloud and its potential difference with the ground. When the potential difference is large enough, the gas becomes ionized and electrons jump to the glass, just like when electrons jump from clouds to the ground in lightning. The result? Bright, harmless, violet “lightning bolts” that respond to touch and sound. 120V 60Hz.

Students can actually see what’s happening!

The electroscope’s aluminum needle-based design makes it superior to traditional leaf-style electroscopes because the needle definitively deflects when static experiments are performed, versus the classic leaf type, where their separation is often unclear to the student. The ultra-sensitive needle will pivot as an electrostatic charge is brought near or transferred to the disk located at the top of the insulated electroscope. Includes charging knob, condenser plates, and a insulated rod. Size: 2.4” x 3.7” x 4.1” (60 x 95 x 105mm). Ring diameter 5.9“ (150mm).

Electricity & Magnetism Light Bulb Demo

Intrigue your students with an amazing and unconventional demonstration of the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Electromagnetic theory explains that when a wire carrying an electrical current is placed within a magnetic field, each of the moving charges that comprise the current experience the Lorentz force. Together they can create a visible force on the wire. Few demonstrations bring to life this important and challenging topic as vividly as the E&M Light Bulb Demo. It uses a special light bulb with a floppy filament that moves when a magnet is brought near it when powered by AC or DC current. In DC mode, the wire filament bends towards or away from the magnet. In the AC mode, the wire vibrates back and forth with the 60Hz current. Operates on 110V AC.

Lenz’s Law ApparatusDiscrepant events are useful in creating cognitive dissonance, which can lead to good learning. Drop the non-magnetic plug through the copper pipe and it falls as expected. Now, drop the strongly magnetized plug through the copper pipe and watch it drop very slowly. What force is slowing it down? The moving magnet causes charges to flow. This current induces a magnetic field. Lenz’s Law states that the induced magnetic field points in the opposite direction from the inducing magnetic field thus creating a magnetic force in an upward direction. Magnetic Field viewing film (not included) can be used to illustrate the magnetic field lines. Experiment and directions included.

Bernoulli Bags How many breaths would it take to inflate an 8-foot long bag?

The long plastic bag nicely incorporates Bernoulli’s principle. If you were to blow it up by placing it firmly to your mouth, many deep breaths of air would be needed. But when you hold it in front of your mouth and blow, air pressure in the stream you produce is reduced, entrapping surrounding air to join in filling up the bag. You can actually blow it up with a single breath! This is especially effective after your students try to fill up the bag!

Demonstrate the Amazing Power of Air!

Replace the stopper to hold the pressure. Then remove the stopper again and watch the learning and fun begin

Simply pull out the stopper, fill balloon with water or air

Remove the stopper and the balloon expands without a problem. What keeps the balloon from inflating? Replace the stopper with the balloon blown up and it remains so. What keeps the balloon from deflating?

Fill the inflated balloon with water and remove the stopper. The spraying geyser that results will have your students thinking about air pressure in a whole new way.

Can be used with Air or Water!

Students will be amazed when they see the power of atmospheric pressure in this demo. Use it as a great companion demo to the Atmospheric Pressure Mat.

COOL TOOLSBalancing Bird

Kids are always amazed when they see this bird balance on anything, a finger, even a nose! But it doesn’t defy gravity, it takes advantage of it. Thanks to two well-placed weights at the end of its

wings, its center of mass is located below the tip of its beak, creating

a stable equilibrium.

Show students how deceiving an object’s center of mass can be. Demonstrate that all forces and torques balance at this point. Spin it on the end of your finger to demonstrate rotational motion. Size: 6" wingspan.

Perpetual Top

Spin this top once, and it will run for hours! At first, the colored light show is the only clue about what lurks inside the seemingly solid toy. But listen closely and you’ll hear the secret: a tiny battery powered off-center motor that spins in response from the top’s motion. It is constantly adjusting the moment of inertia and keeping the gyroscopic rotation going. 3.5cm dia. Includes 4 button batteries (requires 2 at a time).

P3-3503 Perpetual Top $19.95

P3-3503-01 Button battery $.60 ea.

Drinking Bird Almost everyone remembers this hard-to-find toy with at least a twinge of nostalgia. Now he’s back, disguised as a great physics demonstration of heat and thermodynamics. This lugu brious little lorikeet dips his beak into a glass of water as evaporative cooling induces the rise of a volatile liquid from his tail towards his head. As he dunks, the liquid returns to his tail, the bird rises, and the process begins again. Not recommended for instructors under four years of age. Color may vary.

Airzooka Air Cannon

Remember the trash can vortex launcher? This Air Cannon sends a strong blast of air all the way across the room! Use the crosshairs to aim, pull back on the handle, and let go. The elastic forces air out the hole, forming a vortex, which travels up to 30 feet! Use dry ice to create fog and launch 6-inch smoke rings! Explanation included.

Giant Drinking BirdA classic gets a makeover!

Always a favorite for demonstrating the laws of thermodynamics, the Drinking Bird has

evolved into a true work of art. Made entirely of hand-blown glass, you’ll

be proud to display it in your classroom, office, or home. Just set it next to a glass of water and observe. It will start drinking and not stop until the water runs out. The mesmerizing action is guaranteed to have everyone who sees it wondering how, and why, it works. Measures 9.8” (25cm) tall and includes glass stand. Colors may vary.

Product contains ethyl ether. Keep away from heat and flame. Not for use by children.

Discrepant Events Kit12 Amazing Demonstrations that Reveal the Magic of Science!

Award-winning physics teacher Buzz Putnam shares his secrets to grabbing students’ attention and making them think! Discrepant events are really just magic tricks for science class, and we’ve collected a dozen favorites. This kit includes 6 ready-made demos and instructions to make 6 more from common items. We’ve even included a Teacher’s Guide and a video of Buzz himself, so you can perfect your own style and timing.

Demo example: The Balloon Challenge shown above presents students with the question; what will happen if the air valve is opened between the larger and smaller balloons? Intuition says the larger balloon would continue to inflate the smaller balloon until equilibrium is achieved. But a discrepant event is one where the outcome is not what you expect!

P6-6025 Discrepant Events Kit $99

Galileo’s ThermometerA great “attention getter” when discussing topics on pressure and fluids or the gas laws. Multi-colored globes inside the thermometer have gold tags that read from 64° to 80°F in 4 degree increments, combining beauty and accuracy. Kerosene filled, 340mm (13.5”) tall.

Celts

Now you can get our famous Celts with your own name or logo!

See website for details.

Celts are fun oval shaped objects that allow students to explore rotational inertia, center of gravity, point of contact, product of inertia, moment of inertia, and much more. Tap one end, and the Celt will mysteriously begin to spin. Spin the Celt clockwise, and it will reverse direction. The real fun comes when your students begin to search for an explanation to this surprising phenomenon.

Celt: A pair of acrylic polystyrene celts, which serve as a great inexpensive tool for labs or handouts for large groups of budding physics students. Length: 4”.

P2-2120 Celt $4.95/pr.

PhiTOPThe PhiTOP is a scientific demonstration apparatus. It does

for angular momentum what Newton’s Cradle does for linear momentum. When spun, it illustrates the difference between

equilibrium and stability. In that sense, it complements Danish polymath Piet Hein’s famous static (non-spinning) super-egg. The PhiTOP encourages exploration of force, mass, density, gravity friction and time. And of aspects of electromagnetism as well.

P3-5010 PhiTOP $19.95

Sunset Egg

Amaze your students with this glass egg that acts like a little piece of the sky. The egg looks blue when light passes through a small part of it. But when light passes through a large amount, it appears yellow. Just like the sky! At sunset, the sun’s light is passing horizontally through a thick layer of atmosphere and appears yellow. But during the day, the sun’s light passes nearly vertically through much less atmosphere, and so it appears blue. The reason is that short wave blue light is more frequently scattered by air molecules than longer wave red and yellow light. So during sunset the blue light is already scattered away before the light finally reaches your eye. The Sunset Egg demonstrates these same phenomena using microscopic glass dye particles (cobalt oxide) to substitute for air molecules.

P2-1000 Sunset Egg $5

P2-1001 Sunset Egg 6 Pack $25Explain why the sky is blue during the day but yellow at sunset!
