A hand clasped in reassurance, cherished friends, and laughter,

The happiness and fellowship that come through working together.

Moments to be remembered with warmth and a smile,

W h e n recollection of the past becomes sweeter than the present

Because it is familiar. It is softened by time

As twilight fades the glare of a brilliant day. and lingering, highlights all that is lovely.

Sad thoughts, the heartbreak, the disappointment—

They are lost in these twilight shadows,

And that which is beautiful endures.

These are our memori

RESERVE BASKETBALL TEAM

The reserve team completed a successful season, winning 12 of 16 games played but tailed to win th. • championship by losing the last game to Central. Mr. Frank Laman, last season's reserve coach, took over the reigns at mid year, replacing Mi vVoodrufl who was promoted to varsitv mentor. Three of the members, Eddie Clark, Don Wallace, and Dick Sheridan, were elevated to the varsit) squad at the cni\ of the regular season.

BASEBALL TEAM

At the date of publication North had won only one baseball game. The team is somewhat green as there are only two seniors on the first nine. They are Frank Wilson and Herb Fink, Wilson playing at third base and Fink behind the plate. The other members who have at least a year of play .ire Norman Schmitt, Hal Clawson, Don Wallace, Dick Eaton, Capt. Dick Sheridan, Dale King, Vernon Barkstall, and Carlton Fraley.

Capt. Dick Sheridan, Southpaw Bob Gordon, and Marshall Auck share the pitching chores for the Maroons.

Bob Gordon turned in a nice pitching job against West , holding them hitless for five innings but gave up eight runs in the seventh inning, part of which were the result of numerous Nor th errors.

Marshall Auck was credited with North 's lone victory over Central. He sprained his ankle in the fourth inning and Bob Gordon pitched the final three stanzas for the Bears, protecting their lead effectively.

GOLF SQUAD The golf squad, bolstered by two returning members of last year's district and

state champions, opened the season with an easy 16-0 victory over Academy. The two returning members, George Walker and Dick Widdoes, formed the nucleus to which Bob Anderson and Bob Edwards were added to complete the team. This team, coached by Mr. Spangler, is called the " A " team as Nor th also has a " B " or reserve team made up of boys who are not yet ready for varsity competition.

The " A " squad lost the services of George Walker early in the -eascn as the result of an appendicitis attack and he was replaced first by Jack Smith and then by Jim Parker from the " B " team. The record of Mr. Spangler's proteges to May 1 was five matches won, one lost and one tied. North 's chief competitors in the Greater Columbus golf league are Upper Arlington and Aquinas but the squad is improving with every match and hopes to add the district and state titles to its crown for the third year in -accession.

The "B"' team at the beginning ol the season was composed of Jack Smith, Jim Holden, Jim Parker, and Hart Glass but Don Johnson and Dick Wiseman have since taken over two of the positions. Mr. Woodruff is in charge of the "B"" squad and their record to May 1 was two matches won and three lost. They play in a golf league made up of reserve squads and team- of elass B schools.

SWIMMING TEAM

After a lapse of several years North again had a swimming team. W i t h Mike Hagley serving as coach the boys won one meet and lost three, which wasn't had after such a long intermission. The team beat St Charles but dropped three to University, Arlington, and Aquinas.

The Bear- managed to come m third behind Aquinas and Arlington in the Cit) Swimming Meet, and fourth in the Distn. V.

TRACK

The North H u h tr.uk team won its usual firsts in a series of dual and district meets throughout the year. The outstanding victories of the season included the top-heavy defeat of East, 74 1'3 to 43 2-3. Other meets included a defeat at the hands of Arlington by a 2 point margin, 58-60 and a 63-54 decision in West ' s favor. The team took 14 p mt- at the Annual Newark relays

TENNIS TEAM The Nor th tennis team, sparkling with returning players, is pointing toward the

district meet. The boys have dropped two matches to date but expect to make a good showing when the District event gets under way. Mr. Motter is pinning high hopes on Dick Kuhnheim, Merrill Stevens, Bill Long, Bruce Witwer , Dick Burrer, and Glen Johns to come through with a successful season topped off by winning the District meet.

FOOTBALL

Facing the 1945 grid season wath young and inexperienced material, and only one returning letterman, the Polar Bears of North managed to win six out of the nine scheduled games. Besides these vital factors the team was also hampered by injuries throughout the season.

The Bruins opened the season in notable fashion by trouncing their initial rival, Grandview. The next two games were dropped after hard-fought battles to Newark and Aquinas. These proved to be the two toughest teams for North and brought out many faults. A greatly improved team came back to beat Mt. Vernon, Linden McKinley, East, South, and Central. By capturing the East game, 21-19, the Bears were entitled to keep the "Little Brown Jug," a rivalry which has been going on between the two schools for over 47 years.

The last game this year was again the championship game, and also against the Cowboys of West, with North on the short end of a 26 to 13 score.

North High School as in previous years again proved to be the host of Greater Columbus football as indicated by the attendance record of 34,500 for six home games.

Capain Hugh Calland, Herb Fink, and Walt Davis were honored with positions on the All High teams as selected by the coaches and the Columbus newspapers.

Fullback Fink was the leading scorer for the Polar Bears as he tallied 60 points, 36 of which were in City League competition.

Coach Mike Hagely presented letters to twelve seniors including Captain Calland. Jim Long, Bob Trunick, Ray Kiefhaber, Herb Fink, Chuck Holstein, Frank Wilson, Bill Spengler, Harold Kittrell, Dave Gessaman, Don Peters, and Al Johnson.

Also recipient of letters were Bob Wright, Gene Moriarity, Dick Widdoes, Jack Woodruff, Ed. Clark, Dick Bachus, Don Wallace, Walt Davis, Carlton Fraley, Dale King, and Jack Swan, all of which will return to bolster next year's team.

Bill "Butch'11 Doskey was awarded the manager's letter for the '45 season. The captains for next year's squad will be the seven football lettermen who lost

their lives in World War II. For each game one of these will be honored as captain and in addition to this Coach Hagely will appoint a field captain for each game. The field captain will be one of the returning lettermen. At next year's post-season banquet the votes cast this year will be opened and the elected captain will receive the captain's letter.

BASKETBALL

Enjoying one of its most successful seasons in recent years, the North High basketball team finished the season with an enviable record of 16 games won as against onl> five losses. Off to a poor start, the Maroons lost two of their first three games. They were defeated in the next game by West, a bitterly contested one point loss, but it was there that they found themselves and went on to win 11 consecutive games before being defeated again.

Earl Hickman coached the team through the first half of the season but resigned to accept a business position. The new coach selected was Carroll Woodruff who had been coach of the reserve team. Under his guidance the squad won every remaining game on the regular schedule with the exception of the last game with Central, which they lost 28-23. Had the Bears won this final game with Central, they would have tied for the City League Championship.

In tournament play at Delaware the Maroons made one of the finest showings ever made by a North High basketball squad. They toppled Marion Harding, Aquinas, and Washington Court House in rapid succession and then played Central in the semifinals. Here they showed they could do the impossible by trouncing the Pirates 47-31. It was the first Bear victory over a Central Basketball team in six games. By virtue of this victory North advanced to the District finals and a game with Newark, the team favored to win the tournament. The Bears lost by a 40-34 score but gave the Wildcats a stiff battle all the way.

North also took honors on the All-Hi teams, Captain Jack Smith, Dick Widdoes, and Herb Fink being chosen on several teams. Fink was unanimous choice on every team because of his fine all-round ability and high scoring tactics. He set a new City League scoring record by tossing in 188 points in 12 games. Dick Widdoes was selected as next season's captain by the seven letter winner- of the 1945-46 campagin.
