To achieve the Michigan Achievement Award and Star Award, all K of C councils are required to be involved in four particular activities. These become our strengths, and are what guide councils to a successful fraternal year. Without these, K of C councils would just be a loose, unorganized group, doing whatever it was they could think of, without having any common goals. These activities are:Faith, Family, Community, Life. In each of these activities there are numerous programs, of which each council must complete four programs in every activity. To be successful, individual K of C members are asked to be Directors of each activity, taking responsibility for the fulfillment and completion of all of the respective programs in each activity. This “sharing of a goal” takes a load off of the Grand Knight (he is still ultimately responsible) and gives Directors a feeling of ownership and pride of completion when the goals are met. The following brother Knights are the Directors of the respective listed activity. You will note that there are more than six Directors. The reason for this is that a council is not relegated to only four activities. So, if you have an idea in any area, please mention it to the respective Director or the Grand Knight. If it is something that is out of the realm of our K of C council, it can be brought up at the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), by either Tom Plegue (PPC Chair), Jeff Dombrowski (Stewardship/Fundraising Chair) or Gregg Zuccker (Worship Chair).

Grand Knight John Kukla

734-558-4147My Brother Knights,

I hope this letter finds you all safe and healthy. We are living in a remarkable time, something to go down in history, and I hope we never see repeat. So much of our normal habits and routines has been changed. At the same time, I get comfort in seeing the world around us awakening to yet another spring. Mother Nature doesn’t know the difference. Life goes on and we will survive these times.

We are a giving organization, and our council in particular is not accustomed to sitting tight and staying apart from others, especially those in need. We are men of faith and action, which makes it all the more difficult to be still, knowing there are people in need.

Looking back to our Fish Fry’s, (seems a long time ago) it was a prudent decision to stop those when we did. I know I was not eager to shorten the season, and was one of those proponents of continuing on as a “take out” or delivery service, but that goes back to our demeanor as a council of action. Looking back, the decision to end the season early was the only correct course to take.

With the current situation we are all living with, I have reflected on the role of the Knights of Columbus council 13475, and have directed that we will behave as a model organization in complying with the necessary personal behavior and actions, as communicated by the authorities.

We have received a consistent message from the Federal and State governments, as well as the Supreme and State KofC leadership, and the AOD. We should avoid interaction with other people, and stay at home except for activities required to sustain or protect life. I can not direct what we do on an individual basis, but as a council we must display a model for compliance. The biggest help we can make to our community is to keep another person from contracting the virus and ending up in the hospital. Personal hygiene and social distancing are the best weapons to fight the virus.

Our council thrives on community service, and it is difficult for us to just sit tight when there are so many opportunities to assist people. But the consistent messages we get, and now the personal impact of the virus we see here on Grosse Ile, compel us to adopt the directives and guidelines presented. This council must be an example of support and conformance in this matter.

Know that as soon as the situation changes and the restrictions are relaxed, the KofC council 13475 will spring into action and take advantage of all available avenues to assist the parish and community. The executive board has been trying to conduct a Video Conference weekly to keep in touch and discuss what we can do as a council. We are trying to look ahead the best we can to anticipate where we can assist once the conditions allow.

There has been some discussion about attempting to conduct a general membership meeting via a web conferencing service, but I’m not sure it would be productive. It is a challenge to get just a handful of participants to have a productive video conference.

One piece of council business that is due now is the election of council officers. At this time, we will continue to operate with the current officers in their respective positions. Once some semblance of order and routine returns, we will review our options and proceed with a formal process for officer elections. If anyone has an opinion about this please contact me to discuss. We took this course of action because right now our council activity is idled, and everyone’s focus should be on staying healthy. We did not see it as a time to try and conduct a remote officer election process.

Even though we are physically isolated from each other, we are still brothers in the Knights of Columbus. So, reach out to your fellow brothers as you can, and if anyone sees a need that we can service, please let us know right away. We don’t like being on the sidelines!

While so much of our “normal” routine has been disrupted by our current situation, the Knights of Columbus commitment to charity remains a basic foundation of our order. As a council we continue to be observant of our surroundings, looking for needs within our community. Even in this time of isolation, there are ways we can provide assistance to those in need.   Earlier this month, K of C Supreme announced the “Leave No Neighbor Behind” program, and recently issued a “Feed the Hungry” addendum which described supporting food banks at a local and national level. Supreme has set up the “Leave No Neighbor Behind” fund to allow Knights to send donations to a central location which will then distribute 100% of the donations to food pantries in hard hit areas of the country.  In the addendum, Supreme encouraged councils to support food pantries directly, at a local level. Shortly after that, our parish reached out to the parishioners for support with the Sacred Heart Food Pantry. The pantry is experiencing an increase in the number of Grosse Ile families reaching out to them for assistance.   In response, our council contacted the Sacred Heart food pantry, and they identified certain items which they needed, primarily soaps and cleaners. We committed to provide those items, and they would distribute them to the needy. A list was compiled and the items were purchased. They should be delivered to the church this Friday. After this initial delivery, we will assess the needs of the pantry and will provide needed assistance as we can.  Our normal operating budget includes a monthly donation to support the pantry, so this is not really a new initiative. While the size of the donation is larger than normal, we have a sufficient surplus in our accounts to fund it. Clearly the need is there, and this approach lets us be charitable and safe at the same time.  As Knights, if you feel inclined to support this effort, a safe and productive way you can contribute is with a monetary contribution. Even a few dollars helps. We only expect the demand on the pantry to increase in the near future, and a monetary donation is an easy way for individual Knights to participate in this council activity.  A personal check is probably the best method to donate. Make the check payable to K of C Council 13475, and in the memo area please write “food pantry”. Since the church office is closed, mailing the check to our council address is the best.   K of C Council 13475 21599 Parke Lane Grosse Ile., Mich 48138

Making America (Truly) Great Again

Have you ever wondered what the leading cause of death in Michigan & America is?Is it heart disease? Cancer? It may surprise you to know that the leading cause of death in both Michigan and the United States is abortion. According to the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, in 2018 (the latest year for which statistics are available), there were 26,716 induced abortions in Michigan, 25,345 deaths from heart disease, and 21,025 deaths from cancer.Nationally, there were 862,300 deaths of unborn children through abortion, 647,457 deaths from heart disease, and 599,108 deaths from cancer in 2017 (latest national statistics). In contrast, as I write this on May 8, there have been 4,354 deaths from the Coronavirus in Michigan and 75,543 deaths in the whole United States. And America’s response to the Coronavirus has been truly impressive. We have pulled out all the stops with many Americans risking their lives on a daily basis as caregivers, health care professionals, and first responders to take care of the sick, and as store clerks to keep food & basic necessities available in our homes. We have virtually stopped the world’s greatest economy on a dime. We are continuing to endure great economic hardship and temporary loss of freedom in order to stop the spread of the disease and protect our fellow human beings. And we are leaving no stone unturned in order to find a cure or a vaccine to stop this horrible disease. And yet as a state and as a nation, we are doing almost nothing to stop the #1 killer of human life in Michigan & America today- abortion! The cure is simple & known: stop killing unborn children. The scientific, biological truth, that human life begins at conception is also known. God’s truth, that all human beings are all made in the image & likeness of God, and are sacred has been known for thousands of years (Genesis).Everything we are doing during the Coronavirus is indicative of a great nation which values human life and considers it sacred. Everything we are tolerating regarding the deliberate killing of the most vulnerable members of our society, unborn children in the womb, is indicative of a holocaust. One of the things I learned during Right to Life of Michigan’s petition drive to ban dismemberment abortions in Michigan, is that too many churches & their pastors value filling the pews and the collection baskets rather than preaching God’s Truth. That’s why I am so thankful for the Catholic Church where God’s Truth still matters, and that I am a brother in the Knights of Columbus which continues to stand up for that Truth, and protect the Right to Life for all unborn children.Because when we all do that, America will once again be (truly) the great country it was meant to be.

“…do whatever he tells you.”

John 2:5

Just a thought…In the last edition of our newsletter I mentioned that we had obtained a location and an ultrasound machine that will soon be placed. The location is the Family Life Services of Washtenaw County, located just off of I-94 near Belleville Rd. But, that is all on hold unto things open up a little more due to the coronavirus. When we get the “ok” for the dedication, I will let you know. It is an interesting, and inspiring, event to be involved with. One of the more interesting aspects of this dedication is the building that Family Life is occupying. It is the former office of Planned Parenthood…an abortion murder mill, thankfully now being used to save the lives of those innocent children.

Ultrasound 2019…Almost!

THIS MONTH'S CHALLENGEMAY 2020“I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” (Gospel for May 3, Jn 10:9-10)We’ve all gone through times when it seems like we’re just keeping our head above water, or moments when we feel overwhelmed by life. So what does Jesus mean when he says that he came in order that we might have life “more abundantly”? Some think that Jesus is offering a “prosperity gospel” that awards the faithful with happiness, good health and financial success. Yet Christ experienced suffering, as do his followers, so an “abundant life” must mean something else. Whether a given day brings health and success, or trials and suffering, we experience all these things with Christ. By living our lives for Christ, he shows us the way to fullness of life.Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori:This month I challenge you to write down Psalm 27:1 — “The Lord is my light and my salvation” — put it up where you’ll see it daily (on the fridge, on your mirror, etc.), and recite it regularly. Second, I challenge you to promote the cause of life by participating in the Faith in Action Ultrasound or Pregnancy Center Support programs or by making a donation to a pregnancy center.Questions for Reflection:What obstacles do you face in living with more abundance, generosity and magnanimity? Has reminding yourself that God is your light and salvation helped you to live more abundantly? How does supporting the pro-life cause help you, others and our society live more abundantly?

Chancellor

PGK/FDD Jeff Dombrowski

Each month, Archbishop William Lori – Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus – selects a brief passage from the Gospel reading of one of the

Sunday Masses of the month. By taking up the Supreme Chaplain’s Monthly Challenge, men take direct, concrete action to grow in their faith and help

their brothers do so as well.

MEMBERSHIP QUOTA These are the pics of the gentlemen who have

joined our council during the period of Jan 1, 2019-Jan 1, 2020. As can be seen, we are just a little bit short of our quota needed for

Star Award, which is 13 new members. So positions go blank as we attempt to bring in

new members to our council, and add them to the page for our new fraternal year which ends

June 30, 2020.Let’s give more Catholic men the

opportunity to practice charitable works!

Ask the man sitting near you in the pew… Um, when we get back into the church!

Brother Knights,

Thanks to all the Brother Knights who volunteered their time, talent, and effort for our KofC Council Programs and projects that we completed through early March prior to the Health Pandemic.

The" Right to Life” trip, with three buses, to Washington in January was very well attended and a large success as reported by Joe Connors, our Council’s Faith Director. The young people in attendance were highly motivated in their support of the RTL initiative.

The Seminarian Dinner at Crystal Gardens, in February demonstrated our support with thirty plus in attendance from our Council, including wives, to raise Funds for the Seminarian trip to the Holy Land this year.

The Fish Fry planning for our largest event of the year began in early January for the Sacred Heart Knight’s “Home of the Famous Down River Fish Fries.” Three Fridays were very successful with over 590 Parishioners and guest each week putting us on our way to another record. Our first Lenten Fish Fry was on February 28. Unfortunately, we concluded this event March 13, just in time before the worldwide health pandemic broke out.

Nationally, in April and May, the Knights of Columbus donated over $651,541 to “Leave No Neighbor Behind” by putting food on the table for those most in need during this crisis. In April, as part of our charitable giving, the Sacred Heart Council began increasing support and donations to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry to include home supplies and gift cards for purchasing perishables.

All of our other Knight activities and events after March 13 have been suspended until further noticeduring these uncertain times.

I will keep you informed when we are able to conduct further Knight’s activities and events. We look forward to reconnecting with you and your continued support of our programs and Council. As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Desert Meal for Seminarians

For the past 3 years our council has joined with other downriver councils in a joint fundraiser for our seminarians. On February 16 this year, at Crystal Garden Banquet Hall, almost 400 people gathered

together to enjoy a wonderful meal, listen to uplifting speeches, and raise funds for our seminarians, helping them complete their education with a study trip in the Holy Land. Sacred Heart council was well represented…take a look at the pics. If you can’t find yourself, then perhaps you need to start planning on joining us next year. Supporting our future priests to help grow and maintain our faith. Pretty tough not to support this one…. Vivat Jesus!

Marv Petre… has left the building! Yes he has. Known as Elvis Presley’s doppelgänger, Marv left the building after our March 10th meeting and hasn’t been seen since…more or less. Marv attended his last meeting here, avoiding the lime light (see arrow pic on right, that’s Marv). Marv said “no gifts” and we didn’t let him down. But it won’t be the same here without Marv. He joined the Knights in 2004 as a charter member of our council. He volunteered often, and aways his wife Sue would be there, keeping an eye on him. In fact, Marv and Sue were chosen as Knight of the Month or Family of the Month 8 times! Well, actually Sue was, but Marv is her husband. Back when Marv joined our council he was known as “Mercedes Marv” because of the fancy Mercedes he drove. Then one day he had to sell it. That’s when we decided to call him “Marv”…and it stuck. But if you know Marv you know he likes to fish, and likes a cold beer…and not necessarily in that order. And of course you know that nobody can zip off jokes as fast as he can, and sometimes he even makes up his own! Now, those aren’t as funny as the ones he knows, but they’re not bad either. But doggone it, Marv is moving up north somewhat, to a place called Mio. I understand there are quite a few golf courses around those parts, and I’m kind of hoping that he’ll invite us up to golf. In fact, if he does, I’ll buy the beer! Well, I don’t think that’ll happen as Marv says he reads these newsletters, but I think he only looks at the pictures…. But heck, if he reads it, I’ll buy. And I hope that I have to. We miss you already Marv! Well, we haven’t had a meeting since you left because of this covid-19 thing, but when we decide to have a meeting I’ll remind everyone to miss you! The Editor

The arrow is Marv in case you forgot who he

is. But I know that’s not possible. We’ll miss

him, his sense of humor, his willingness to volunteer, his out look on life, his wife

and partner Sue. Wonderful people!

We’ve been blessed having them here.

Hey Marv…I went by your house the

other day!

It’s Lenten Fish Fry Time!

Ok, short season for the fish. Covid-19 shut us down, but we had a great 3 Fridays of food, fun, music, and crowds. Averaging almost 595 per night! I remember just a short time ago that we were hoping to average 400 a night. Lots of support from our parish, the island, and those near and far, who come here to enjoy what I think is the best Lenten FF around. Thanks to all of our workers,

planners, cooks, servers, decorators, cleaners, washers, bartenders and helpers. This is a parish-wide event, because it couldn’t happen without all of you. A big thank you from the Knights!

Other Events!

Confirmation Lunch We provided lunch for this year’s confirmation class.

Parents and kids numbered about 60, so it was a pretty easy detail for our well established veterans of food

serving. Chicken, potatoes, desert…and everyone went home well fed. Including the workers!

State Bowling Championship Ok, ignore the title…there are no bowling champions here!

Just a mix of downriver knights who enjoy bowling together at these events. Lots of chances to win some cash or other

prize. If you can throw a ball generally in a forward direction, come join us! It’s always a great time. This year’s event was

hosted by Holy Redeemer Council in Burton, Michigan

Food For Families (Pantry) This is not a stick-up caught on video. Two Worthy past gentlemen snuck into a building during the Covid-19 deal and fumigated items to be sent to families in need. Items purchased by our council, but in need of being rendered harmless. After the deed they snuck out again, and the

governor is none the wiser.

A Golfing Eagle Now, this is not Alex Baclawski pointing at where his golf ball went after his drive from the tee…even though that is where

his golf ball went after his drive from the tee. What he is actually pointing at is the majestic symbol of our wonderful country, perched, and protecting, his personal home. The great bald eagle, and mate, have been nesting here, with

what appears to be a nice little family. He is massive, he is beautiful. What a great feeling having these here.

Food Pantry Jim Dell

Gentlemen:

The items purchased included the following:

9 Pounds of Ground Round 18 Packages of Luncheon Meats

16 Pounds of Chicken Legs and Breasts

3 Pillars of Retirement HappinessMoney. It’s simple. People with money in retirement tend to be happier than those without. It’s never too late to make saving a priority. Sooner is better than later.Health. If you’re not healthy, money likely won’t help you enjoy your retirement. If you’re not exercising four or five times a week; if you’re carrying more weight than you know you should; if you’re consuming more calories than your exercise is burning, change now or realize that you won’t like the outcome later.Social well-being. Your relationship with your spouse, your significant other and your network of friends is one of the strongest predictors of your retirement happiness. All three pillars require putting effort in today to get something of greater value in the future. You may easily understand that concept with saving money, but it’s the same with health and social relationships. Eating right, monitoring your weight and exercising may likely deliver great rewards for your future. Quality time and finding common interests with a spouse or friends doesn’t just happen without thoughtful intention. If all your social interaction is at your place of employment, it’s not enough. Nurture some outside relationships that you will continue to embrace past employment. If you want to maximize your happiness, decide now to start making an effort into each of the three pillars. The payoff is likely to be significant.

Brother Knights,

With the number of events that the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus runs each year, we always need volunteers. In the past, we would circulate a signup sheet at the meetings to fill these spots. Even though we’ve had good participation with theses signups, it did not reach everyone in our council. With our large events like the Lenten Fish Dinners, we had approximately 100 signup slots each week. Without the help of technology it would have been impossible to track all the signup slots.

Last year we introduced Signup Genius in order to reach not only our Knights but also others in Sacred Heart Parish that assisted us putting on events. We will continue to use this technology for all of our future events. If you have not used Signup Genius in the past it is quite simple.

When you receive an invitation for a signup:

1. Click on the link – this will take you to the Signup Genius page 2. Click on the slot that you want to sign up for 3. At the bottom of the signup page, click on “Submit and Signup” 4. Another page will pop up asking you to create a “UserName”. Always use your email address for this. You will also need to create a “Password”. Use something that is simple and memorable. You will use this every time you have an invitation in the future to login to Signup Genius. 5. Follow instructions at the bottom of the page to submit your signup 6. If at any time you get a RED message box on your screen, you have left something out, just make the change requested, and submit.

If you still have difficulty, contact GK Doug Cryderman at 734-676-0369 for assistance.

…How this works!
