Does it sometimes seem that racing is a little too...professional? The big sponsors, team colors and the high-tech struggle for mil-

lisecond almost makes it too complicated. Well, if you want to revel in the spirit of a simpler time in two wheeled competition, the next round of the 2018 Super Hooligan National Championship throws down today, Wednesday, August 8th at the Chip’s technical and thrilling TT track—part of the ground-shaking Moto Stampede.

Super Hooligan racing harkens back to the origi-nal “run whatcha brung” spirit of the Jackpine Gyp-sies and early Class C racers. Roland Sands and his hooligan buddies brought back the idea a few years ago, igniting a renaissance in dirt racing. A Super Hooli-gan race smack in-between the Wolfman Jack stage and the Top Shelf lounge at the Chip? That’s as original as Roland’s idea – and it makes the Buffalo Chip and RSD perfect partners.

Modifications are limited and the class rules are sparse, encour-aging competition and a free-wheeling sense of excitement. An impressive selection of classes run, from vintage to amateurs and even a costume class! And proving the street cred of Indian’s Scout Sixty, a customized version—compliments of Indian, J&P, GEICO and the Chip—will take some turns on the track before being given away at the end of the evening.

Plus, it’s more than just racing when the Chip throws a party! After the races, The Reverend Horton Heat takes the stage fol-lowed by a smokin’ hot country romp with Eric Church to keep the party rolling all night. Don’t miss a minute of the action!

For 37 years, the Buffalo Chip amphi-theater has been the home for top name concert performances. Back in the day,

there was plenty of impromptu racing there, too. But last year’s inaugural Buffalo Chip TT demanded a higher caliber race venue, and the standard was raised even higher for this year’s Chip TT when the track was refined and safety was further addressed.

Enter McGuigan Inc., a family-owned farm in Spearfish Valley that’s been operating since 1908, over five generations. “We were in the dairy business for longest time then evolved to doing strictly hay, high quality hay,” said Mike McGuigan. Those giant hay bales skirting the Chip TT’s lines came from McGuigan’s and they were the literal building blocks of a wall separat-ing racers and spectators.

What makes high quality hay? “We sam-ple all our hay and have a lab run analysis on it, testing it for feed qual-ity and feed value,” said Mike’s son Curtis. How do you produce high quality hay? Said Mike, “It’s time and diligence; working with Mother Nature to know when to cut it and get it packaged right.”

Curtis agrees. “It has to do with Mother Nature co-operating with you. I’ve been watching my dad and grandpa doing this a lot of years. I guess I learned a lot at age seven I didn’t know I was learning.”

The McGuigans put up 1500 tons of hay a year and deliver their sought-after bundles all over the nation, to top horse farms, dairies, and drought-stricken areas.

The hay used for the Chip racetrack isn’t top of the line—that wasn’t necessary for our use. But it looks amazing and the sturdy solid barrier it makes protects both racers and spectators. Each mega bale is 3’ x 4’ x 8’ and weighs 1400 pounds. Somebody bring the forklift! For other uses, the McGuigans pro-duce a block of 21 smaller bales, bundled together. These weigh “just” 1260 pounds…

Maybe they don’t claim to be race fans, but the McGuigans did come out for the Buffalo Chip TT on Sunday. Said Mike, “We saw one of your racers take out one of our small bales!”

That’s one hay bale that’s not going back to the farm—but it did what it was supposed to do!

Not everyone knows that the Buffalo Chip is named after Jim “Buffalo Chips” White, a U.S. Cavalry scout and loyal fol-

lower of Buffalo Bill Cody. So it’s in the spirit of Buffalo Chips, that we acknowledge the indomi-table friends of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Camp-ground, the happy campers who return year after year, bring their friends, and create a palpable fam-ily reunion ambience. Some say there’s something special in the air at the Chip, others say it’s in the dirt. We believe it’s in the hearts and souls of the people who’ve become Chip Family. And, as Cody appreciated White, we salute them!

SRD: Tell us about your first visit to the Buffalo Chip.

C: Overwhelming! We didn’t know what to expect. We had some concerns about the safety of the Chip. It really ended up being the greatest rally venue we have ever stayed at! We felt instantly at home. It had so much to offer and was way worth the price of staying there. There have been many years when we haven’t even left the campground. We would just set up camp and stay at the Chip the entire time, there was so much to do!

You have to stay at the Chip. It’s ground zero for the Rally. It’s undoubtedly the number one des-tination of bikerhood. It’s on every biker’s bucket list. If you’re not staying at the Chip, then you aren’t getting the true Sturgis experience.

We’re constantly looking for a similar experi-ence elsewhere, but there’s no comparison to the Buffalo Chip. No words can sum up the feeling you get at the Chip. It’s magic. A sense of freedom, and overwhelming patriotism. It fills your soul. It’s about the gathering of souls from all different walks of life. The Chip brings us all together. We love motorcycles, music, and camaraderie.

J: You can’t deny, it turns out to be the best party anywhere, every time.

SRD: Do you have any recommendations for new campers?

J: Don’t worry about not fitting in. The Chip decides who stays and who goes.

C: If someone complains, they end up leaving or getting escorted out. If you go into it with a bad attitude, the Chip will weed you out. There’s magic in that ground.

SRD: What kinds of friendships have blossomed from your Chip experiences?

C: We know vendors, other campers, and staff! The pizza vendors know me by name. The body-painting girl knows me, for sure. We’ll see them at the rally and it’s a family reunion without any drama! Everyone is so laid-back. You can spend hours talking with people around the campsite, just waiting for the amazing concert that night. We’ve met people from all over!

SRD: What sort of stories do you tell to family and friends when you go back home?

J: There are way too many memories.C: It’s an all-year process of getting together and

relating back to memories. So many memories just sear themselves onto you.

J: There’s always one night, which becomes the culmination of the perfect night. You never know when it’s gonna happen, but there’s always one. Last year, my favorite night was watching Char-lie Brechtel with some friends. We weren’t focused on the concert, we were just enjoying each other’s company.

Your Buffalo Chip Christmas tree was a huge hit!

C: We loved decorating it and making the orna-ments. We’re artists, both of us trained in Italy. We paint motorcycles and cars, plus cabins and coun-try styles. We sell our art at art festivals, arts and crafts shows, and tons of street fairs. Our website is arthearts.com!

30 Years of rat’s Hole sHow

2018 marks 30 years of Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Shows in Sturgis. Held at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads Thursday, August 9, don’t miss special anniversary surprises. Like what? Count’s Kustoms’ Shannon Aikau presents a unique “Counting Cars” trophy to one standout bike—and it might be yours! Kid Rock performs later tonight, shakin’ the gates for the biggest bash of the entire Rally.

Each year, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame inducts individuals who have distinctly impacted motorcycling.

This year’s nominees exhibit a diversity of talents. Let’s meet them.

Jeff deckeR Steeped in hot-rodding and gearhead culture as a child, Sculptor

Jeff Decker took a job at a fine-art foundry after college, learned the lost wax process and motorcycle sculpture resulted.

Decker’s work is complex and accurate, sometimes whimsical, always intriguing. One notable work: “By The Horns” — a 5,000-pound bronze on the grounds of the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

 Jack hoel

Sturgis resident Jack Hoel was three years old when his parents, local Indian dealers Pappy and Pearl Hoel, hosted the first races in town. As a young man he raced competitively, then managed Yama-ha’s race team and worked as Yamaha’s Head of New Product Devel-opment. Today, Jack Hoel is passionate about the Rally’s racing roots and remains a prominent member of the Sturgis community.

 aRmondo “mondo” PoRRas

As a teenager, Mondo Porras worked for body-shop owner Den-ver Mullins in San Bernadino, CA. After Mondo bought an old Pan-head their focus turned to motorcycles and Denver’s Choppers set the style for raked out choppers in the early 1970s. In 1992 Mondo

took over and he’s continued to curate chopper styling, build cus-tom motorcycles and promote the sport.

 maRilyn stemP

With her late husband Dennis, Marilyn Stemp started IronWorks Magazine in 1989. Collaborative and inclusive, IronWorks was built on passion for the topic. Following the last issue in 2014, Marilyn launched Iron Trader News where she continues to present motor-cycling and riders in a positive light. She writes for consumer and industry magazines, Kiwi Indian Motorcycles, Lemans Corp., and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip and has authored several books.

ValeRie thomPsonAmerica’s Queen of Speed, and the world’s fastest female motor-

cycle rider, Valerie Thompson has set seven land speed records and gone over 300mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. She is a member of six 200mph clubs and her drag racing career spans a decade.

Unpretentious and self-effacing, Valerie’s sweet personality masks a steely racer’s resolve.

 hamsteRs usa

Beginning from humble, some might say silly origins, The Ham-sters, a worldwide organization of custom motorcycle enthusiasts, mark their 40th year of celebrating motorcycling and doing good. The original members include Steve Allington, Barry Cooney, Ed Kerr, Jim Leahy, Arlen Ness, Dave Perewitz, Susan Perewitz and

Donnie Smith. The group is being inducted in recognition of their philanthropic efforts resulting in remarkable regional impact. They exemplify the best image of motorcycle riders: custom bikes, cama-raderie and charitable efforts.

2018 fReedom fighteR: kiRk “haRdtail” WillaRd Kirk Willard has ridden thousands of miles to support ABATE of

Wisconsin and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF). His mis-sion: to promote the preservation of the motorcycle lifestyle.

He is president of the MRF and served on the Board for over a decade. He works tirelessly to promote and protect the sport of motorcycling, defending our right to pursue this lifestyle unhin-dered.

Fred exhibits tireless energy, a positive, practical out-look, and fervent determination to support the brick-and-mortar shop owner.

The induction ceremony, presented by Strider, is held this morn-ing at the Lodge at Deadwood. Word is the event is sold out but call the Museum at 605-347-2001 for info.

ives bros Unsanctioned bike antics have been popping up around the Sturgis Buffalo Chip all week. Stunt lifestyle riders have wowed spectators at the CrossRoads, unleashing clouds of smoke and defying gravity.

The complete lack of gravity—or the presence of centrifugal force—was on display at the Ives Brothers Wall of Death as brothers Cody and Kyle spun around the inside of the classic wall on AMF-era Harleys and 1970s Hondas. It’s something you have to see!

Stunt rider Clint Ewing repeated his stunning performances three times a day and the Gambler 500 crew took mini bike madness to new heights as they ran the Super Hooligan track then climbed the iron bridge to race along the upper catwalks of the Chip amphitheater. Said Gambler spearhead Tate Morgan, If you win, you get mocked because you tried too hard.”

Bling on parade

Walls of Death have thrilled fans at small town carnivals and county fairs since the turn of the 19th Cen-

tury, not only in America but in Europe as well. The traveling circus aspect of this attraction har-kens to the misty past, when the thumping of the boards and speeds of 40mph mere inches away were impressive.

Truth is, they still are, and it’s a palpable thrill to watch two twenty-something brothers, Kyle and Cody Ives, ripping around inside the Ives Brothers Wall of Death. The bikes they ride, which are pretty much twice as old as the rid-ers, include AMF-era H-D two-strokes, an older Flathead, and a ‘70s Honda.

With dad Ives as announcer and mom along to keep everyone in line, it’s a decidedly family sort of deal. And that’s evident in the way Cody and Kyle perch at the exits after each show, shak-ing hands and thanking spectators as they leave. In the analog world of the Wall of Death, fam-

ily counts and old-fashioned manners persist. It’s back to basics and as real as it gets.

Witness the Ives brothers’ riding skills all week long at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. FREE shows happen several times per day. And don’t be surprised if you catch the bros popping wheel-ies or sneaking onto the Hooligan track. To Kyle and Cody Ives, standing on your Harley’s seat or a bit of freestyle motocross jumping is just another day in the office.

DIME HORSESHOE BARAround 1972 owners Jerry and Alice

came up with an idea for an annual event to mock some of the behavior of a group of out-of-town bikers who would peel out and burn rubber in front of their bar. The group started to have competitions who could burn the most rubber, hence the start of a 45 year tradition.

About 12 years ago Bev Doll purchased the bar and is keeping the tradition alive.

The Sun-dance Cham-ber describes a burnout perfectly. “One at a time, each biker locks his front tire, drops the machine into gear and starts revving the engine. The tachom-eter flails. The back wheel spins at impos-

sible speeds. Heavy smoke rises. The crowd gets pelted with bits of rubber and blasted by the sound of a V-twin at full throttle. Sometimes the show ends with a deafening pop - hopefully that’s the tire, not the engine.”

Bev’s Dime Horseshoe Bar has live music, food, and beer all day long. Watch the sharp turns at Horseshoe Corner when heading east on Hwy 24 in Wyoming. More info on their Facebook page.

Drink responsibly and ride safe.

If you look around the Buffalo Chip you can tell: Woody likes sculpture! Longtime friend “Horse,” leader of the Sons of Light Ministry and orga-

nizer of the free pancake breakfast at the CrossRoads, knows it, too. So when he turned up for rally this year, he brought the newest addition to the sculpture collection: the perfectly patina’d metal buffalo sculp-ture placed in front of the Chip’s office.

Sons of Light does ministry work in Mexico and that’s where they found the hand-built buffalo. “He didn’t have a green card but we got him across the border,” said Horse.

After they got to the Chip, they snuck it out of the trailer late at night, placed it, and waited for Woody to arrive next morning, watching to see if he noticed. And he did, but he didn’t see the plaque saying where it was from.

“My son, nine-year-old Jonathan, ratted us out! He went in the office and told Carol where it came from, Horse explained

Why the gift? “He blesses us every year!” said Horse of Woody. “People have turned their lives around from having pancakes with us here.”

Sons of Light has served free pancake breakfast and a peaceful start to the day to riders during rally for 22 years. They’re remarkable friends whose pres-ence is a gift to everyone. Pancakes at the Church of the Chip? It’s a necessary part of the Rally.

tent each morning of the Rally from 7-11 a.m. The Sons of Light have been a fixture at the Chip for years and rightly so. These people are so darn nice you’ll be wishing they were open all day.

Street Drag Invitationals with Crazy John

When Super Hooligan racers threw their gauntlets into the dirt a few years back they ignited a racing revival not seen in

decades. We caught up with Roland Sands—racer, designer and Hooligan-in-Chief—to talk about that.

SRD: Super Hooligan racing was the catalyst for a new era in motorcycle racing but doesn’t seem to get the credit for that.

Rs: I’m not in it for the credit, I’m in for the spirit of getting people involved and on two wheels. We got out there and started riding these heavy bikes in the dirt. We made it into a lifestyle and gave people a reason to talk about racing. If we are a gateway for people to be more open to racing that’s what matters.

SRD: Racing is getting way more attention.Rs: The success has really happened on the backs

of the guys doing the hard work in places like AFT. And it’s predominantly about the riders. You go where the youth and excitement are, where there are interesting stories. We created an interesting story.

SRD: Is part of the attraction that Hooligans ride street bikes?

Rs: It has to do with not spending lot of money to go racing. With our Scouts, we take more off than we put on. And all bikes are welcome: Tri-umphs, Ducatis, BMWs, Harleys. We’ve had Yamaha bolts and even KTMs That’s part of the allure. If we stay multi branded we’ve done our job.

SRD: The nature of Hooligan racing is loose. How

do you get sponsorship but retain that? Rs: Everyone who rides these things is loose!

They’re f ’ing hooligans, a bunch of sketchy MFers. That said, from when we started 4 or 5 yrs ago, these guy have really improved. Having a few pros come out has improved the level of riding. It’s given some of the others something to shoot for and showed them how to get better.

SRD: How is the Chip as a race venue? Rs: The Chip made the commitment and has

built a nice TT track. It’s proof of concept. When Woody and I first talked 4 or 5 years ago he said he wanted to bring racing back to center stage, and he made it happen. So hats off to him. I thought he was nuts when he first talked about putting the track in front of the stage but at the same time I was like, “Hell yeah!”

The Greatest Show on Dirt starts at 4:00 p.m. today in the Buffalo Chip Amphitheater. Be there as the dirt starts flying.

For racing in the street-Bruce Springsteen,

“Racing in the Street” 1978

We’ve all been there, on our favorite machine waiting for a light to turn green while a potential competitor sidles up next to us, a few rips from the throttle announc-ing his arrival. Who doesn’t love the thrill of the lights changing? The roar of the engines as the clutches let the horses loose, the sweet stink of octane and rubber launching machines down two lanes of blacktop...

Locals and long-time rally fans alike can tell you about the hell-raising days of the 1970s, when loosely organized races lit up the scene on the streets of Sturgis. Finally, the city threw the whole exciting mess out of town, leaving Crazy John Markwald to bounce from venue to venue until the party came home to roost at the Chip in 2016.

The Buffalo Chip knows this vibe well and are proud to host the Street Drag Invitation-als today, Wednesday, August 8th. Show-casing big names from the world of custom and performance bike building, gleaming, super-tuned machines will rip to their red-lines again and again right through the mid-dle of the Chip’s amphitheater to open up a day of gearhead glory. Spectators watch from the overhead catwalks as the flag drops and eliminations whittle down the field. It’s unadulterated grassroots racing!

And don’t go anywhere after Crazy John crowns the winner because Super Hooligan racing starts at 4:00, followed by a full con-cert line up when Eric Church comes on “Like A Wrecking Ball!”

LAST NIGHT’S CONCERT …

what’S a moxie award?moxienoun Slang.1. vigor; verve; pep.2. courage and aggressiveness; nerve.3. skill; know-how.

Those words accurately describe the four companies receiving the 2018 Sturgis Buffalo Chip Moxie Awards. Instituted

last year, the Moxies recognize, “Those who’ve demonstrated the backbone, skills, determina-tion and cajones to start a business, grow it and prosper amidst difficult economic challenges in an intensely competitive marketplace,” said Buf-falo Chip owner Rod “Woody” Woodruff.

This year’s recipients have all achieved substantial milestones while holding firm to the Moxie principles. Mike Tomas started Kiwi Indian Motorcycles 30 years ago after arriving in the U.S. from his native New Zealand to become the confirmed expert on vintage Indians. This year marks the 30th Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show in Sturgis (the Daytona show was the 45th annual), started by Big Daddy Rat Karl Smith and now run by Ted and Pam Smith. The Rat’s

Hole truly is “The Grandaddy of them all!”Hot Leathers, recognized for 35 years of

stalwart industry presence, is owned by Jerry Berkowitz and managed by Andy George. And it’s a remarkable 50-year landmark for Mike Corbin of Corbin Seats, who celebrated the anni-versary in Hollister over the 4th of July.

Awards were conferred at the kickoff Indus-try Reception on Sunday, August 5th. The

Sturgis Buffalo Chip is delighted to shine the spotlight on those few who’ve started businesses, met the challenges and continue to serve the public and motorcycle industry well. Congratu-lations to all!
